The beginning of a new calendar year seems as
good a time as any to review progress and look
ahead. It seems like only yesterday that we
were still in the hot days of summer and were
surviving through the dog days of August.
We've passed through a relatively devastating
Yolanda downpour and as we end December,
it's always a good opportunity to take stock of
the past year.
The past 12 months were a busy time for
everyone associated with St. Elizabeth Hospital,
Incorporated, and the Gazette was no
exception In the following paragraphs, we shall
review progress over the past year and reflect
on some of what has been achieved, where we
are now, and what we hope to accomplish in
2014.
Setting things in order and putting everything in
place, 5S had made its way into the hearts of
every working area. The implementation made
every personnel involved in housekeeping,
setting things in order, and sustaining the
organized method. It certainly has improved
efficiency and effectiveness of services of each
unit and department.
Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative made a
full throttle in the year 2013. The doubled
rooming-in rate from 30.77% from 2012 to 63%
greatly shows the collaborative efforts of
Pediatricians and SEHI workforce in fulfilling a
Mother-Baby Friendly atmosphere. Not only
that, the implementation of lactation break
policy, the expansion of lactation station, and
the recognition for an exemplary execution of
Newborn Screening surface the successful
continued endeavour of realizing and sustaining
our commitment as a Mother-Baby Friendly
Hospital.
Aim Geared towards delivering fast, efficient,
and effective quality health service, SEHI
launched programs, equipment and facilities
that address its goal. The Direct-to-Room
admission, Heart and Brain Attack Unit and the
Vein viewer at the Emergency room, the C-arm
at the Operating Room, and the Cryostat
machine at the Laboratory propelled a much
improved and advanced rendering of quality
care to SEHI clients.
Gawad Kaagapay somehow epitomizes the
institution’s victory as an organization aspiring
for continued excellence. With its financial
stability, governance, management, financial
performance and corporate social
responsibility, SEHI has been distinguished by
Landbank as an outstanding institution. It
depicts the hospital’s struggle in achieving and
sustaining a top-quality performance by an
establishment.
With all the ordeals and accomplishments of
the institution in the past 12 months, we
cannot discount the fact that 2013 has been a
year of hard work and achievement for SEHI. It
brings to us a sense of fulfilment having
realized that inch by inch our goal of attaining
our mission is coming into fruition. Yet a lot
more hard work is required to sustain such
achievement. Thus, wrapping up what has
become of SEHI in the year 2013, opens up a
new beginning for 2014. A bigger
infrastructure, a greater number of clients to
cater, a higher standard to reach, a more
advanced technology to manage- indeed, the
present year unveils a lot of promises for the
institution. And the realization of those
promises is always up to the SEHI people.
Altogether, let us embrace the challenges of
2014, and keep up to the promises of a
brighter new beginning.

In the words of James Cash Penney, change is vital and improvement is the logical form of change. Pulling out
all the stops to provide the best patient-care technology to its clients, the St. Elizabeth Hospital introduces the
latest additions to the family:

It has always been a tradition, not only in our
hospital but the world, that when the calendar declares
that December has come, we start decorating our
surroundings. Christmas trees are put up and decorated
with the most colourful ornaments, garlands line the
hallways and wreaths greet us hello on every room.
But to spice things up, the tradition turned into a
competition. All departments are tasked to decorate
their own respective offices with recycled materials- all
natural- and as expected, we put up to the challenge.
The Hemodialysis Unit fulfilled the dream for a
white Christmas using cellophane; the Medical Records
Department’s belen made of used envelopes and
newspapers welcomes everyone who comes up the
second floor; the Clinical Laboratory’s shining-
shimmering tree made of tubes made a loud astounding
call for promotion of blood donation; and last but
certainly not the least, the Housekeeping Section’s entry
stationed at the heart of SEHI became the centrepiece
of the hospital’s Yuletide adornments. These offices’
works of art fashioned an eco-friendly Christmas
atmosphere in the hospital.
“We spent time doing the decoration. Even the
personnel on off duties came in to help and spent extra
hours for this.” said Mr. Joel Bitalac, head of the winning
office. This holds true to all departments and this
undoubtedly brought unity and fun to all employees.
Maybe it was not the final product that actually
mattered but the making of it. The shared time, smile
and laughter on the making of the decors is truly an
evidence of the Christmas spirit and weighs more than
the prizes won.

A TREMENDOUS EFFORT OF EARLY
IDENTIFICATION OF NEONATES who are
affected by certain genetic, metabolic, or
infectious conditions that may lead to mental
retardation brought St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc. to
the glare of accomplishment of receiving two
meritorious awards for consistent
implementation of the program happened last
October and November 2013 as conferred by
the Department Of Health and University of the
Philippines Manila-national Institutes of Health.
Every two years, the Department of Health
(DOH) and the Newborn Screening Reference
Center (NSRC) recognize practitioners,
stakeholders, and partners who help and
contribute in newborn screening (NBS)
advocacy, education, implementation, and
institutionalization.
Three types of awards are given to
institutions, organizations, and individuals:
Achievers Awards, Exemplary Awards, and
Special Awards. In 2013, a fourth category is
introduced, recognizing longstanding
exceptional coverage performance of health
facilities.
St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc. achieved an
Exemplary Achievers Award last October 16,
2013 vested by the Department Of Health and
the University of the Philippines Manila-
National Institutes of Health for its consistent
exemplary performance in newborn screening
for two years in 2011 and 2012. This
commendable award is a due recognition of its
active role in helping the government improves
the health of the Filipino children through
expanded newborn screening.
An Exemplary Award on Newborn
Screening Program Implementation Review was
succesively given by the Center for Health
Development-DOH Region 12 on the following
month of November 27 2013. The awards and
recognitions are based on a given set of
established criteria. One of the selection criteria
for NSFs is to comply with target newborn
screening coverage for their respective regions.
In the Philippines, Newborn screening was
introduced in 1996 as a pilot project and was
subsequently mandated by Republic Act No
9288 or the Newborn screening Law in
2004. The Law provides for the national
Comprehensive Newborn Screening System
(NCNSS) which states that every newborn
must be offered newborn screening.
Currently, the newborn screening panel
included 5 disorders, i.e. Congenital
hypothyroidism (CH), Congenital adrenal
hyperplasia (CAH), Phenylketonuria (PKU),
Galactosemia (GAL) and Glucose 6
Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency
(G6PD def). More than 60 000 newborns
have been saved from a range of
complications like mental retardation,
death, and hemolytic crisis.

ALL CUSTOMERS EXPECT TO BE GIVEN
PROMPT AND EFFICIENT SERVICE.
That’s why the Marketing Office
introduced the Direct-to-Room Admission
program last October 26, 2013 to better
accommodate the needs of its clients.
“It is always our goal to render fast,
efficient service to all of our clients.” says
Marketing Officer, Ms. Farrah Hannah Lim.
“We believe that our direct-to-room
admission program would address this.”
The Direct-to-Room admission is part of
the hospital’s Comprehensive Executive
Package. Through this program, clients who
will be submitting themselves for the
executive check-up shall be taking the fast
lane, bypassing the usual Emergency Room
route.
Instead, the client’s admission will be
attended to by the Nurse-Supervisor. The
Nurse- Supervisor shall accompany the client
to the admitting section for his admission and
room accommodation. He shall also be
catered in the diagnostic areas, still with the
assistance of the nurse-supervisor, until he is
transported to his private room. What makes
the whole process fast-paced and convenient
for the client is that he shall be visited and
assessed by the Resident doctor at the
comfort of his own room.
The St. Elizabeth Hospital Comprehensive
Executive Package can be availed thru the
hospital’s Marketing Office.

“Malaki talaga ang pinagbago ng OR/DR unit”, remarked Mr.
Daryl Panerio, then 5S Program Coordinator. “I’ll show you the
previous quarter audit results; at kung icompare mo ngayon, halos
wala ka nang makitang problema.” Mr. Panerio explained that the OR/
DR Complex once had a less favorable score as compared to the
recognition they have now.
A tour and interview with Mr. Arvin Vibar, OR Staff Nurse,
showed what Mr. Panerio meant about making most of what they
have. Documents, forms and equipment were piled up and arranged
neatly in what is now the new OR nurse station. “Actually, marami

talaga natulong yung bagong set-up”, says Mr. Vibar as he was
explaining the new set-up, which he described as more centralized
compared to before. Most of frequently used equipment and supplies
are now situated at the heart of the complex for easy access by the
different OR theatres. “Before, maghahanapan pa ng mga gamit” he
said.
We then entered the delivery room, neat and picturesque as
though it was ready for a photo shoot (and to think the staff wasn’t
really prepared for a drop-in interview that day). When labeling and
cluttered instruments were once their weak point in the previous
audit, this turned out to be their most prominent improvement to
date. “Mahirap rin kasi kung may tao na baguhan dito [sa OR/DR] kung
hindi isasaayos ang mga bagay-bagay, kapag pahahanapin mo ng mga
gamit, talagang mahihirapan na lang sila maghanap,” and that he
meant clutter may cause delay to the unit’s operations. He also
gestured to a remarkable improvised shelf for Delivery Room
equipment, “Dati itong lalagyan ng mga monitor ng laparoscopic
cholecystectomy”. The shelf now is utilized as organized storage of
instruments. Now that’s what they call making the most of what you
already have… very admirable.
And this was only the beginning. When asked for what future
plans they had for the OR/DR Complex, Mr. Vibar simply put it as
“Marami…” then imparted that structural improvements are currently
being made to enhance the services of the complex. A Mobile C-arm
room is being planned for construction. Labor room beds will be added
soon to cater to more clients. And more to come.
It was interesting to hear about the plans for the future, but it is
just as astonishing to know the newsworthy improvements they have
already made just by making simple tweaks in their 5S. They are
indeed worthy of the recognition for making this big 5S revolution.

St. Elizabeth Hospital
Incorporated has achieved a
skyscraping rate of 63%
babies roomed in as of the month of
November; double of last year’s rate.
Mother-baby friendly hospital initiative
geared on full throttle, SEHI strives to
carry on the initiative through the
compliance of the institution with the
DOH rooming in policy and breastfeeding
promotion- with the help of the
pediatricians.
The whole year of 2013 has been a
collaborative effort between the hospital
and the allied pediatricians in
continuously implementing the Mother-
Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. Every
month, the institution gives due
recognition to the pediatric consultants
who have made such an achievement
possible. “Doctors are of big help in our
success. Their cooperation and support
to the rooming-in and breastfeeding
programs paved way to the triumph of
the Mother- Baby Friendly Hospital
Initiative this year” elaborated Ms.
Gwendoliza Escalon, Lactation Specialist
and MBFHI Coordinator. She recounted
the efforts of the pediatricians to push
through with the rooming-in compliance
knowing that it has a lot of benefits for
both mother and baby.
Dr. Leopoldo Durico, pediatrician,
and the pediatrics department head of
the MSO, has shown exemplary
compliance and support to the rooming-
in policy of the institution. He was
recognized to have exhibited 100%
observance of rooming-in well babies
with no less than 3 admissions in a
month for the months of January, May,
August, October, November and
December. He even relayed to his
colleagues his words of encouragement,
one with the MBFHI Chairman, Dr. Ma.
Helena Veneracion- Garcia, to
continuously support the institution’s
rooming-in policy. He is seconded by Dr.
Sergio DemontaĂąo, Jr. and Dr. Ma.
Christina Domingo who have topped the
rooming-in recognition twice this year,
for the months of February-September
and March-April, respectively.
Indeed the recent year has been an era
of fulfillment for the Mother-Baby Friendly
Hospital Initiative. A big thanks to all
pediatric consultants who have been
supportive to the institution’s endeavor.
Year 2014 shall be promising with the
successful partnership of SEHI and allied
physicians.

  • 2. The beginning of a new calendar year seems as good a time as any to review progress and look ahead. It seems like only yesterday that we were still in the hot days of summer and were surviving through the dog days of August. We've passed through a relatively devastating Yolanda downpour and as we end December, it's always a good opportunity to take stock of the past year. The past 12 months were a busy time for everyone associated with St. Elizabeth Hospital, Incorporated, and the Gazette was no exception In the following paragraphs, we shall review progress over the past year and reflect on some of what has been achieved, where we are now, and what we hope to accomplish in 2014. Setting things in order and putting everything in place, 5S had made its way into the hearts of every working area. The implementation made every personnel involved in housekeeping, setting things in order, and sustaining the organized method. It certainly has improved efficiency and effectiveness of services of each unit and department. Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative made a full throttle in the year 2013. The doubled rooming-in rate from 30.77% from 2012 to 63% greatly shows the collaborative efforts of Pediatricians and SEHI workforce in fulfilling a Mother-Baby Friendly atmosphere. Not only that, the implementation of lactation break policy, the expansion of lactation station, and the recognition for an exemplary execution of Newborn Screening surface the successful continued endeavour of realizing and sustaining our commitment as a Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital. Aim Geared towards delivering fast, efficient, and effective quality health service, SEHI launched programs, equipment and facilities that address its goal. The Direct-to-Room admission, Heart and Brain Attack Unit and the Vein viewer at the Emergency room, the C-arm at the Operating Room, and the Cryostat machine at the Laboratory propelled a much improved and advanced rendering of quality care to SEHI clients. Gawad Kaagapay somehow epitomizes the institution’s victory as an organization aspiring for continued excellence. With its financial stability, governance, management, financial performance and corporate social responsibility, SEHI has been distinguished by Landbank as an outstanding institution. It depicts the hospital’s struggle in achieving and sustaining a top-quality performance by an establishment. With all the ordeals and accomplishments of the institution in the past 12 months, we cannot discount the fact that 2013 has been a year of hard work and achievement for SEHI. It brings to us a sense of fulfilment having realized that inch by inch our goal of attaining our mission is coming into fruition. Yet a lot more hard work is required to sustain such achievement. Thus, wrapping up what has become of SEHI in the year 2013, opens up a new beginning for 2014. A bigger infrastructure, a greater number of clients to cater, a higher standard to reach, a more advanced technology to manage- indeed, the present year unveils a lot of promises for the institution. And the realization of those promises is always up to the SEHI people. Altogether, let us embrace the challenges of 2014, and keep up to the promises of a brighter new beginning. • 4. It has always been a tradition, not only in our hospital but the world, that when the calendar declares that December has come, we start decorating our surroundings. Christmas trees are put up and decorated with the most colourful ornaments, garlands line the hallways and wreaths greet us hello on every room. But to spice things up, the tradition turned into a competition. All departments are tasked to decorate their own respective offices with recycled materials- all natural- and as expected, we put up to the challenge. The Hemodialysis Unit fulfilled the dream for a white Christmas using cellophane; the Medical Records Department’s belen made of used envelopes and newspapers welcomes everyone who comes up the second floor; the Clinical Laboratory’s shining- shimmering tree made of tubes made a loud astounding call for promotion of blood donation; and last but certainly not the least, the Housekeeping Section’s entry stationed at the heart of SEHI became the centrepiece of the hospital’s Yuletide adornments. These offices’ works of art fashioned an eco-friendly Christmas atmosphere in the hospital. “We spent time doing the decoration. Even the personnel on off duties came in to help and spent extra hours for this.” said Mr. Joel Bitalac, head of the winning office. This holds true to all departments and this undoubtedly brought unity and fun to all employees. Maybe it was not the final product that actually mattered but the making of it. The shared time, smile and laughter on the making of the decors is truly an evidence of the Christmas spirit and weighs more than the prizes won. HAPPY HOLIDAYS SPENT THE NATURAL WAY ! • 7. A TREMENDOUS EFFORT OF EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF NEONATES who are affected by certain genetic, metabolic, or infectious conditions that may lead to mental retardation brought St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc. to the glare of accomplishment of receiving two meritorious awards for consistent implementation of the program happened last October and November 2013 as conferred by the Department Of Health and University of the Philippines Manila-national Institutes of Health. Every two years, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Newborn Screening Reference Center (NSRC) recognize practitioners, stakeholders, and partners who help and contribute in newborn screening (NBS) advocacy, education, implementation, and institutionalization. Three types of awards are given to institutions, organizations, and individuals: Achievers Awards, Exemplary Awards, and Special Awards. In 2013, a fourth category is introduced, recognizing longstanding exceptional coverage performance of health facilities. St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc. achieved an Exemplary Achievers Award last October 16, 2013 vested by the Department Of Health and the University of the Philippines Manila- National Institutes of Health for its consistent exemplary performance in newborn screening for two years in 2011 and 2012. This commendable award is a due recognition of its active role in helping the government improves the health of the Filipino children through expanded newborn screening. An Exemplary Award on Newborn Screening Program Implementation Review was succesively given by the Center for Health Development-DOH Region 12 on the following month of November 27 2013. The awards and recognitions are based on a given set of established criteria. One of the selection criteria for NSFs is to comply with target newborn screening coverage for their respective regions. In the Philippines, Newborn screening was introduced in 1996 as a pilot project and was subsequently mandated by Republic Act No 9288 or the Newborn screening Law in 2004. The Law provides for the national Comprehensive Newborn Screening System (NCNSS) which states that every newborn must be offered newborn screening. Currently, the newborn screening panel included 5 disorders, i.e. Congenital hypothyroidism (CH), Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), Phenylketonuria (PKU), Galactosemia (GAL) and Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD def). More than 60 000 newborns have been saved from a range of complications like mental retardation, death, and hemolytic crisis. SEHI HAILED EXEMPLARY ON SAVING BABIES’ LIVES Written By: Erick Von P. Fredeluces, RN ALL CUSTOMERS EXPECT TO BE GIVEN PROMPT AND EFFICIENT SERVICE. That’s why the Marketing Office introduced the Direct-to-Room Admission program last October 26, 2013 to better accommodate the needs of its clients. “It is always our goal to render fast, efficient service to all of our clients.” says Marketing Officer, Ms. Farrah Hannah Lim. “We believe that our direct-to-room admission program would address this.” The Direct-to-Room admission is part of the hospital’s Comprehensive Executive Package. Through this program, clients who will be submitting themselves for the executive check-up shall be taking the fast lane, bypassing the usual Emergency Room route. Instead, the client’s admission will be attended to by the Nurse-Supervisor. The Nurse- Supervisor shall accompany the client to the admitting section for his admission and room accommodation. He shall also be catered in the diagnostic areas, still with the assistance of the nurse-supervisor, until he is transported to his private room. What makes the whole process fast-paced and convenient for the client is that he shall be visited and assessed by the Resident doctor at the comfort of his own room. The St. Elizabeth Hospital Comprehensive Executive Package can be availed thru the hospital’s Marketing Office. Written By: Pamela O. Aquino, RN Page 7
  • 8. “Malaki talaga ang pinagbago ng OR/DR unit”, remarked Mr. Daryl Panerio, then 5S Program Coordinator. “I’ll show you the previous quarter audit results; at kung icompare mo ngayon, halos wala ka nang makitang problema.” Mr. Panerio explained that the OR/ DR Complex once had a less favorable score as compared to the recognition they have now. A tour and interview with Mr. Arvin Vibar, OR Staff Nurse, showed what Mr. Panerio meant about making most of what they have. Documents, forms and equipment were piled up and arranged neatly in what is now the new OR nurse station. “Actually, marami 5S REVOLUTION: THE OR/DR COMPLEX SHOWS HOW OR/DR Complex sky rockets up the 5S Audit Boards as the highest scoring Category B Facility for the third quarter. This recognition, however, didn’t come to them on a silver platter. talaga natulong yung bagong set-up”, says Mr. Vibar as he was explaining the new set-up, which he described as more centralized compared to before. Most of frequently used equipment and supplies are now situated at the heart of the complex for easy access by the different OR theatres. “Before, maghahanapan pa ng mga gamit” he said. We then entered the delivery room, neat and picturesque as though it was ready for a photo shoot (and to think the staff wasn’t really prepared for a drop-in interview that day). When labeling and cluttered instruments were once their weak point in the previous audit, this turned out to be their most prominent improvement to date. “Mahirap rin kasi kung may tao na baguhan dito [sa OR/DR] kung hindi isasaayos ang mga bagay-bagay, kapag pahahanapin mo ng mga gamit, talagang mahihirapan na lang sila maghanap,” and that he meant clutter may cause delay to the unit’s operations. He also gestured to a remarkable improvised shelf for Delivery Room equipment, “Dati itong lalagyan ng mga monitor ng laparoscopic cholecystectomy”. The shelf now is utilized as organized storage of instruments. Now that’s what they call making the most of what you already have… very admirable. And this was only the beginning. When asked for what future plans they had for the OR/DR Complex, Mr. Vibar simply put it as “Marami…” then imparted that structural improvements are currently being made to enhance the services of the complex. A Mobile C-arm room is being planned for construction. Labor room beds will be added soon to cater to more clients. And more to come. It was interesting to hear about the plans for the future, but it is just as astonishing to know the newsworthy improvements they have already made just by making simple tweaks in their 5S. They are indeed worthy of the recognition for making this big 5S revolution. Written By: Justin Rhyz R. Ismael, RN Page 8

Mother-baby friendly hospital initiative geared on full throttle, SEHI strives to carry on the initiative through the compliance of the institution with the DOH rooming in policy and breastfeeding promotion- with the help of the pediatricians. The whole year of 2013 has been a collaborative effort between the hospital and the allied pediatricians in continuously implementing the Mother- Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. Every month, the institution gives due recognition to the pediatric consultants who have made such an achievement possible. “Doctors are of big help in our success. Their cooperation and support to the rooming-in and breastfeeding programs paved way to the triumph of the Mother- Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative this year” elaborated Ms. Gwendoliza Escalon, Lactation Specialist and MBFHI Coordinator. She recounted the efforts of the pediatricians to push through with the rooming-in compliance knowing that it has a lot of benefits for both mother and baby. Dr. Leopoldo Durico, pediatrician, and the pediatrics department head of the MSO, has shown exemplary compliance and support to the rooming- in policy of the institution. He was recognized to have exhibited 100% observance of rooming-in well babies with no less than 3 admissions in a month for the months of January, May, August, October, November and December. He even relayed to his colleagues his words of encouragement, one with the MBFHI Chairman, Dr. Ma. Helena Veneracion- Garcia, to continuously support the institution’s rooming-in policy. He is seconded by Dr. Sergio DemontaĂąo, Jr. and Dr. Ma. Christina Domingo who have topped the rooming-in recognition twice this year, for the months of February-September and March-April, respectively. Indeed the recent year has been an era of fulfillment for the Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
