PINNACLE PULSE
Summer is here and it is a very exciting time for Pinnacle
As we move into summer, Pinnacle is continuing to grow and expand. By the end of the year we will have three
new residential programs operating in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky (its 4th). In addition, we are in the process of
opening three new opiate treatment programs in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia.
As many of you know, our current investors have been with us from day one. Over the past two years they have
been working with me and the senior team to find new investors that would take their place and help position the
company for further growth. Since the beginning of this year we have been working with our investors to find a
suitable replacement.
Since January, investment groups from the west coast to the east coast expressed their desire to partner with
Pinnacle. All viewed us as one of the best companies in the industry who had the right foundation and team to
become the industry leader. You should all be as proud as I am in the work each of you do treating this devastating
illness. The professionalism and passion each of you show did not go unnoticed. Many of these groups visited our
programs and talked to staff, and they all walked away even more interested in being a part of our company.
After a very rigorous five month process, I am very happy and excited to announce that Linden Capitol Partners LLC
will be Pinnacle’s new financial partner. Linden is recognized as an industry leader and focuses purely on health-
care investments. The advantage for us is having a partner who really knows the healthcare industry and can bring
the breadth of resources necessary for our company to continue its growth. Their devotion to quality care and
commitment to the highest standard of integrity is in total alignment with Pinnacle’s mission and goals.
We are now going through the required process of notifying all of the regulatory bodies we are involved with of this
change. We anticipate closing on our sale in August. Over the next month I will schedule several town hall calls.
These calls will be purely informational and will allow you to ask questions about the sale. What I want to convey
to you now is that this sale will not affect anything in how we operate on a day to day basis. Your position, salary/
benefits and our reporting structure will stay in place. What will change is our ability to grow and expand in even
more states. This will give you even more opportunity to grow within the organization.
Again, I want to thank each of you for the care you provide to those we serve. This is an exciting time for our
company and all of you should be as proud of it as I am of you.

A message from Rebecca Gaskin, VP of Residential Services
“Growth” is the word for the residential facilities as we move into the summer months, and we are exploding with
possibilities as we prepare to add five additional residential facilities to the Pinnacle family. As we grab our hard hats
and shovels for groundbreaking ceremonies, please stay tuned and follow our journey.
The first facility to join the team will be our South Shore,
KY, location opening in July. It is a true beauty of a facility
on 37 acres, with high-end finishes, a pool area that
would make most resorts envious,
and a lake providing a serene
setting ideal for personal reflection
and healing. Patricia Moskalyk will
assume the Executive Director
position for this location. Many of
you have worked with her over the
past year in a variety of positions
throughout Recovery Works and we
are confident she will do a great job
in her new position.

A message from the Editor:
This newsletter covers news and events occuring throughout PTC from January through

of the company, however, publication of the newsletter was postponed. We apologize
for this delay and hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Pinnacle Pulse.

NEWS FROM RESIDENTIAL (CONTINUED)
Next up will be the Columbus, OH, location. Traci Mason,
a local resident of the area, joined the team several
months ago as Executive Director and has been very
busy establishing herself in the community, introducing
Recovery Works to the Columbus, OH, area and building
her start-up team. Traci has a long history of leadership in
the substance abuse field. She has
been involved in prevention activities
and sits on many state and local
boards. The ground breaking event
at the facility in April was standing
room only, and proved a terrific event
hosted by Traci and the marketing
team, Evan Gold and Beth Prachar.
We also welcome Valerie Thorn as the Executive Director
of our new facility in Merrillville, IN. The state of the art
facility will offer detox, residential,
PHP and outpatient services and will
have 40 beds. The facility plans to
open in mid to late August. Valerie
is a Family Nurse Practitioner and
has years of experience working with
people struggling with mental health
and addiction disorders in a variety
of settings.
We would also like to introduce Colleen McCleery to the
residential leadership team as the Regional Director for
the KY Recovery Works programs. Colleen has over a
decade of senior management experience in the field
of addiction treatment and mental health throughout
the state of Ohio. Her past
responsibilities include operational
oversight of multiple facilities in many
states across the US. In addition,
she is a current CARF surveyor
for residential behavioral health
treatment accreditation. She will
assume her new role June 27th.
As enticing as new and shiny can be, I would be amiss if I
did not share the continued accomplishments and growth
of the current RTCs. In March, all three RW locations
in KY completed their CARF re-accreditation securing
a three year outcome. Many thanks to Gloria Young in
Mayfield for taking on and driving the process under
Michelle Miller’s team’s guidance.
In addition, each of the RW facility main campuses, and
Endeavor House North and South, offer a free standing
outpatient facility where patients who have completed
higher level of care services with us, or referrals from the
community directly, can participate in partial, intensive
outpatient or group counseling sessions. These
outpatient facilities allow PTC facilities to offer care
throughout the traditional continuum.
Endeavor House North (EHN) and
South (EHS) – Keyport & Kearny, NJ
Endeavor House experienced a great first quarter and
has completed most of the projects started in the winter.
EHN has been renovated and expanded and we are
continuing to move other projects along, looking at ways
to better utilize our space and build on what we have
developed. In May, the admissions department moved
from EHS to EHN, and we are excited to have everyone
in one building now. The Keyport office building will be
closing in the fall of 2016 and those other departments
will be relocated to New Life Center, our outpatient
services in Keyport. EHS will continue to service our
patients for extended care. We are happy to report that
we recently completed our patient satisfaction review for
the 1st quarter and clinical scores were in the 78%
range; we are striving for 85%. We were also able to
determine where we need to put our efforts over the next
quarter and look forward to making those changes.
A personal message from Henry Bennett, MHS,
Executive Director:
I came to Endeavor House after retiring from 36 years in
the behavioral health industry. I was recharged in coming
and looking forward to my new role. The staff, clients,
senior management and all involved have welcomed me
and I am grateful. I want to express my gratitude every
day to our clients and staff for the welcome they gave
me. I feel strongly that how we treat our clients and staff
shows our love for them and they deserve no less from
us for the jobs they do. I am committed to this and it is my
mission. Maya Angelou said, “People may not remember
what you did for them, but they will remember how you
made them feel.” Clients should walk away from the
treatment experience feeling good about the process, and
our dedicated staff helps them to achieve that.

NEWS FROM CLINICS
Recovery Works (RW) – Elizabethtown (ETN), KY
A tale of possibility…
Teamwork is a concept we often hear thrown around in many companies, organized sports and personal relationships.
The concept of being committed to something larger than ourselves is often something that falls short in delivery,
however, and simply can go against human nature. But as we know, when it happens, so does magic!
For the first half of this year, ETN illustrated the possibility of teamwork and selflessness. In February of this year, the
facility found itself without an Executive Director and clinical director, and attempting to operate with one counselor
meeting the needs of 55 clients. To top off that challenge, ETN had a CARF accreditation survey approaching quickly
in mid-March and was running short in admissions.
Initially, what felt like a sinking ship quickly found wings among the other RW facilities in KY, who pulled together to
identify how they could help. From GTN, Paul (ED) spoke with Bob (counselor) who agreed to come and assist in
caring for patients as they worked their recovery program. Bob’s easy demeanor, professionalism and group dynamics
quickly helped stabilize the patient population. Lucy also set up shop at ETN and took on the admissions department.
She stayed for two months and her expertise and commitment has proven itself over and over.
GTN alone did not answer the call of need. Jennifer (ED) at Mayfield, also identified how her team could provide
support. In a few days, Laura and Gloria came to provide counseling and patient care. Their sense of humor and
relentless passion for people struggling with addiction disorders is contagious and soon an environment that felt
desperate had hope.
Creating the rhythm for this new orchestra came Patty Moskalyk as acting ED. She assumed residence in the ETN
area, lived and breathed ETN seven days a week implementing structure, systems, programs and championing
teamwork that would allow ETN to continue to serve patients, rebuild, successfully secure a three year CARF
accreditation, and meet state requirements for service delivery. Though Patty became the conduit to connect the
pieces on the ground, the corporate team support of Doreen (HR), Quality and Compliance (Michelle’s team) and
finance (Solomon) became the foundation for the rebirth of ETN.
And finally, as summer begins, we welcome Jayme Collins as the new Executive Director of ETN. Jayme has over
20 years’ senior executive experience most recently in the states of Kansas and Minnesota. Clinically trained, Jayme
has experience in mental health, addiction treatment, and vocational rehabilitation services and has excelled in past
positions in finance, employee engagement and turn-arounds.
Many, many thanks to those that assisted at ETN, but also to those that stayed at their home facilities and increased
their caseloads and tasks to operate short-handed so that RW as a “whole” would continue to flourish and as a “team”
succeed. We wish Jayme and the whole team continued success!
Jayme Collins,
Executive Director

Recovery Works – Georgetown (GTN),
KY
The first quarter of 2016 proved to be both challenging
and rewarding for the staff and patients at RW GTN.
The greatest challenge we faced was the same as that
encountered by our sister facilities in Elizabethtown and
Mayfield, a three day long CARF survey. The outcome
of the survey was unanimous approval of all our clinical
services as well as administrative and facility
functioning, leading to the issuance of a three year
accreditation. To reach this status took an incredible
amount of teamwork from the corporate Quality
Improvement team through all the individuals on the
ground, working at the facilities tirelessly for months on
end to achieve our goal. The fruits of our labor, across
all three KY facilities, assures our clients that they are
being cared for with optimal programming and by highly
skilled and trained clinicians, nurses and techs.
In GTN, we also implemented a new clinical schedule that
has been favorably received by staff and patients alike. It
is actually a throwback to years ago when patients were
held accountable by their peers each morning during a
community meeting, followed by a day full of primarily
group work. Patients are commenting that they enjoy the
groups more and that they have the opportunity to
interact with their counselors more. The challenge was to
create a schedule that would give more patient/counselor
time each day, yet still provide ample time for the
counselors to complete their documentation, discharge
planning, family meetings and more. To date the new
schedule seems to be working quite well.
We have also been busy licensing and opening a new
IOP program at another sister site, NKY Med Center in
Covington, KY. The center is one of Pinnacle’s largest
and most successful outpatient clinics, doing an incredible
job of providing methadone services to addicts in northern
KY. Our IOP is conducted during evening hours, long after
the clinic is closed. Jimmie Richardson, CADC, is the
primary counselor for the program, while Kelly Pichotta is
the program coordinator. Both Jimmy and Kelly also work
at the clinic during the day.
New employees at GTN include Ashley Semones,
RN; Andrea Baker, LCSW, CADC; Clara Mitchell,
CADC; Jimmie Richardson, CADC; Kelly Pichotta, IOP
Coordinator; and Byron Watson, Resident Assistant.
Recovery Works – Mayfield, KY
This year has been an exciting time in Mayfield as we
continue to learn how to grow effectively with our new
opportunities of two recovery houses and an outpatient
site. We have seen growth in our outpatient program as
we now have a full staff who offer a diverse and unique
program for clients who are ready for the next step after
residential. Clients and staff are active in our community
with activities such as shopping, going to church, movies,
and civic activities around town. Our belief in providing
opportunities for healthier living and life skills drives our
desire to increase meaningful experiences for sober
living.
On May 21st our campus hosted a day-long celebration
of recovery. There was family involvement that included
games for parents and their children as well as for
adults. Food was plentiful and ranged from cotton candy
and popcorn to grilled burgers with all the trimmings. We
were pleased to see many alumni in attendance, some of
whom spoke at the 12 step meeting that closed the
evening.
During the event we dedicated an on-campus memorial
to former clients who have succumbed to the disease
of addiction. The memorial will serve as a permanent
reminder of lives lost and remembered by those of us
who have walked the journey of life with them. A special
area on the grounds will be maintained and promoted as
a place for meditation and contemplation as we continue
on our quest for peace and healing.

VA/KY Region
In February 2016, a quarterly leadership meeting was held in Lexington, KY,
with PTC Residential Programs, KY/VA Outpatient Programs and Pinnacle
corporate team members. It was a great opportunity for each director and
department to share information about their services and how to integrate care
for patients throughout the Pinnacle continuum of care. In the spirit of bringing
our divisions together, a team building exercise was held at BreakOut. Teams
were divided into a Derby Heist and a Kidnapping Theme where each team
had one hour to “break out” of their respective rooms. It was a fun activity and
a valuable experience for everyone involved.
Northern KY Medical (NKY) – Covington, KY
NKY Med has seen a very busy 2016 serving the Northern KY/Greater Cincinnati community as one of the largest
opiate treatment providers in the region. An expansion of the lobby was completed to better handle the fl ow of
patients throughout the day. NKY Med also welcomed Recovery Works IOP services, adding an additional layer of
recovery support and treatment for the patients of NKY Med, RW GTN, and the community. NKY Med welcomed their
third Clinical Supervisor as Carrie Kunzelman joined the team, bringing years of experience in not only substance
abuse, but also in mental health counseling. NKY Med was honored to be asked to participate in an event hosted by
Northern Kentucky University honoring journalist and author of “Dreamland,” Sam Quinones. The two-day event was
designed to educate the students, the community and social service professionals on the rise of the heroin epidemic
plaguing our area. Jessica Allender, Community Relations Coordinator, was asked to speak on a panel during the
event as an MAT expert. This was just one of many events NKY Med was honored to be a part of during the first
quarter aimed at educating the community on MAT.

will be providing services at both locations. We also welcome new Daviess staff, Dr. Dennis Bunton, and Clinical
Supervisor and Counselor, Dawn Tedder.
Pulaski Medical - Pulaski, VA
Pulaski Medical is excited about new team members and the promotion of two staff. Sherry Tompkins has been
promoted from a part-time Nurse Practitioner to full time Nursing Director. Amber Atkins has been promoted from

All of the staff at AMS Ensign would like to thank Darlene Klocek for her 10½ years of service as an integral
member of our Nursing staff. Congratulations on your retirement!
Alliance Medical Services (AMS) – Johnstown, PA
An unusually mild winter in the Laurel Highlands helped all of us here at Alliance Medical Services-Johnstown settle
into our new facility. We had little time to rest after the move, however, as we jumped right into preparation for the
WEPA Region’s CARF survey. Johnstown served as the administrative site for the survey and we are proud to say
that it went great for all of the facilities. Way to go and congratulations on the three year accreditation!
We held an Open House for our new location on April 26 and had a great turnout of area providers, community
leaders, and other stakeholders. It was a great chance to show off the new facility and provide some education about
the services we provide.
We ended April on a high note with a fantastic fiscal and clinical audit with Value Behavioral Health. Their high praise
for the work being done here is a tribute to all of the staff who continue to strive to save lives every day. For that
reason, it is with pride that the entire staff team at AMS was named Employees of the Month for April!

Greenfield Counseling (GC) –
Meadville, PA
Summer has come to Greenfield Counseling! We have
been preparing for the official change in licensure with
DDAP, received our updated occupancy permit and
implemented all Pinnacle Treatment Centers’ policies
and procedures. Since the end of 2015 our census
has grown from 255 to 290. We also had two long time
counselors resign in April to pursue other career goals.
The increase in census and departure of our colleagues
created additional stress for the counselors, nurses and
receptionist. They handled the changes seamlessly
though, and ensured the focus
remained on the highest quality
of care to our patients. We would
also like to welcome Erica Deeter,
Counselor Assistant to our team.
Her experience working with
children and families will be highly
beneficial to our patients with
children.

Ann Arbor Treatment Services (AATS) – Ann Arbor, MI
AATS is continuing to integrate our services into the community. We recently signed a Medicaid contract and hope to
begin providing those services soon to those who are in need and qualify. We are also preparing to begin providing
Suboxone services in the near future.
The clinic is actively involved in the Washtenaw Health Initiative (WHI), where local health issues are addressed
through community-wide action. The WHI board appoints committees to address the identifi ed predominant health
issues in the county. Substance abuse and more specifi cally, Opioid Addiction, have been in the top two identifi ed
issues for the past two years. Some of the measures the board has been able to implement have been equipping
and training the local Sheriff’s departments with the use of Naloxone, which resulted in a saved life within the fi rst
seven days of implementation.
AATS has also provided targeted advertising and communication in the community to help reduce the stigma
associated with substance use. In addition, we have been able to bring in the developer of the Lazarus Project to
speak to over 100 concerned community professionals and treatment providers. The Lazarus Project is aimed at
educating/training/involving communities in reducing the high death rates of opiate and heroin users. Although we
have seen a reduction in the rate of deaths since the WHI began its work, there is much more to do.
We are pleased to introduce two new employees for the first quarter: Shane Mayes, Receptionist, and Dr. Adu.
Welcome aboard!
Sterling Heights Treatment Services (SHTS) – Sterling Heights, MI
Sterling Heights Treatment Services recently formed a partnership in the community with a local, non-profit Domestic
Violence and Sexual Assault organization.
Turning Point Inc., will offer our patients the opportunity for advocacy services such as crisis intervention,
housing, employment, individual counseling, group counseling and self-help groups. These resources allow
patients continued growth within the community with access to resources, education, medical
services and mental health services. As is our mission, this helps to ensure we are treating the
whole person. Awareness of the need for routine assessment for referrals is something SHTS
strives to achieve. These partnerships make it possible for smooth transitions and long-term success

Delaware Valley Medical (DVM) – Pennsauken, NJ
DVM is pleased to report that our Operation SAL has been running successfully. We have maintained attendance
with the program’s clients and have seen progression in managing their substance use disorders. Every week, these
clients are attending IOP and engaging in individual therapy sessions. Operation SAL clients are also provided with
funding for treatment in order to help decrease the rate of Narcan administration and achieve the program’s goal to
save at least one life.
During the first quarter, DVM staff and patients partnered together to create Valentine’s cards for children with
severe illnesses at the Ronald McDonald House. Staff and clients also participated in donating Easter gift baskets to
those clients who were in need of presents for their children this past holiday. These activities have helped to
increase the patient-staff alliance and a positive work atmosphere while also providing the opportunity for
community outreach.
DVM recently celebrated the retirement of Wanda Friend who has been an asset to our team since the beginning.
Wanda’s hard work and dedication was celebrated by staff with a retirement party. Wanda has been a source of
support for patients and staff members over the years and we wish her well in her future endeavors.
Staff at DVM have continued to participate in self-care awareness and support, and are currently in the midst of a
fitness for summer challenge. Our staff have been eating healthy and exercising to increase personal care and
overall health and wellness, along with a little friendly competition.
Middletown Medical (MTM) – Middletown, NJ
MTM staff remain focused on providing the best possible treatment to the individuals we serve. Earlier this year
we hosted a successful Family Education Session to encourage families to be a part of their loved one’s recovery
process. Our staff has increased their focus on caring for pregnant clients through updated literature as well as
more in-depth coordination with community resources. We also recently completed a successful transition of our
program from Tower to SMART software management.
Our team has been working diligently to market our treatment services and integrate our program into the community.
The high quality of services provided by our team has contributed to a growth in census this past quarter, which
allowed us to hire additional staff. This quarter we happily welcomed several new staff members to our team, two
counselors: Lizzette Darouichi and Caitlin Moore; and two clerical staff: Dori Vansant and John Brady.

MM kicked off the spring season by congratulating our counselor Maureen Suchecki for completing her run in
the Boston Marathon. Maureen is an avid runner and coaches track within the community. Maureen’s time was a

In addition to that positivity, Executive Director Joseph Montanez and Clinical Supervisor Amylyn Ostroski have
been networking throughout the local colleges and attended recent job fairs promoting different intern/employment
opportunities within the organization. MM will also be hosting an Open House for local providers within the community
to see in person the services that our clinic provides. Our facility recently completed renovations which provides an
encouraging and comfortable environment for all. We also recently received an increase in a license capacity to 420
and five additional county funding slots.
MM would like to congratulate counselors Jamie Karmon and Allison Gilboy as well as our Nurse Practitioner Julianne
Hunisch on their engagements and upcoming weddings. We wish them the best of luck!
Mt. Pocono Medical (MPM) – Mt. Pocono, PA
MPM has had a number of changes over the past few
months. Two new counselors were hired, Claudia Smith
and Stacy Boisseau. Due to former Executive Director,
Lee Koplin transferring to Northeast Family Healthcare
(NEFHC) as their Executive Director, several internal
promotions took place: Monique Sheppard, from Clinical
Supervisor to Executive Director; Phillip Jones, from
Counselor to Clinical Supervisor; Robert Gonzalez, from
Counselor to Lead Counselor; and Sandee Anderson,
from Lead Nurse to Nursing Supervisor. Sandee not only
supervises MPM’s medical staff, but also the medical staff
at NEFHC.
Due to MPM’s continued growth in patient capacity, the
state approved another increase to 420. In anticipation for
this increase some remodeling took place which allowed
for an expansion in our lobby area. In addition to changes
taking place inside the building, the patients of the
Advocacy Team planned a “Clean-Up Day” for outside of
the building. On this day, patients and staff volunteered to
ensure the outside property was clean and presentable.
MPM went through a successful CARF inspection in April
and has received a three year accreditation. Another
audit took place in April by the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug
and Alcohol Commission due to the funding they offer
some patients who lack medical assistance but qualify for
county funding. We are proud that there were no citations
noted during this audit.
Staff at MPM have started to attend the Monroe County
Opioid Task Force meetings held monthly. The April
meeting consisted of a Q&A for MPM staff which offered
some education to the other attendees in regard to
medication assisted treatment. Staff also attended a
Town Hall Meeting on the Opiate Epidemic, hosted by the
Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission held
at East Stroudsburg University. In addition, MPM staff
attended an open house at Pyramid Healthcare (their
outpatient site located in Bartonsville, PA) to learn about
their services. MPM maintains attendance at the Monroe
CIS (Crisis Intervention Services) meetings every other
month. MPM continues to work on increasing coordination
of care with community providers. During the next quarter
we are looking forward to attending additional training,
participating in team building activities, and recognizing
staff for their hard work and patients for their progress.

NEWS FROM CLINICS (CONTINUED)
Stateline Medical (SLM) – Phillipsburg, NJ
We would like to welcome aboard Jennifer Lissitz to our non-medicating general outpatient
substance abuse clinical team. Congratulations Ruthanne Taggart for passing the written exam
for the CADC in New Jersey. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our clinical
team: Courtney Bray, Payton Shivers, Rachael Karcher, Ruthanne Taggart, Latisha Frederick,
Jennifer Lissitz, and the Director of Clinical Services Moneefah Jackson for working as an
effective team while dealing with the challenges of increasing census and limited manpower.
We truly have a remarkable team that goes above and beyond to assist the patients. We would
also like to welcome back Brooke Hocking and congratulate her and her husband on the new
addition to their family. Welcome Calvin to the world!
The Medical Department at SLM continues to be run by two full time and one part time nurse. As our census
expands, the nurses stay busy with the daily operations that keep the department running smoothly. We recently
transitioned into the new SMART software and we are eagerly learning the program. Both of our physicians are
already familiar with the program and are using at other facilities, and are excited to make the switch as well.
SLM recently reached a census milestone: MMT is 400, Suboxone has reached 108 and the non-medication program
has a census of 35 clients.

Unintended Consequences of Changes in Opiate Prescribing
History has repeated itself. In the late 19th century,
Opiate prescribing tripled and there was a process of
re-educating physicians that resulted in the percentage
of opiate containing prescriptions dispensed in 1908
dropping to 3.6% from a high of 14.5% in 1888.
In 2016, as the opiate scripts lessen, the drug cartels
have filled in with low cost Heroin, utilizing marketing
ploys that would make Big Pharma jealous. The cutting of
heroin with liquid Fentanyl that forms clumps of extremely
high potency drug and the complications of injecting it
have created a growing public health crisis.
The opiate prescribing problem is not just from the
notorious “Pill Mills” that have mostly been shut down.
A 2009 study of Mayo Clinic showed that 1 in 4 patients
treated for acute pain became long-term users of opioids.
The CDC recently released guidelines for opioid
prescribing that includes an observation that “3 days
or less prescribed opioids for acute pain will often be
sufficient; and more than 7 days will rarely be needed.”
These guidelines also include recommendations for MAT
with Suboxone and Methadone for people diagnosed with
Opiate Use Disorder.
The Harrison Act of 1915 outlawed
opiate prescribing for addicts and
there is still stigma persisting against
evidence-based MAT. Non-opiate
Vivitrol injections have become very
attractive for many and the soon
to be FDA approved long acting
buprenorphine implants show great
promise.
The solution to the current public health crisis of addiction
is increasing access to quality treatment. The kindness
and empathy of Pinnacle employees encourages people
to persist in their efforts to recover from the terrible
scourges of addiction. Our efforts to educate our clients
in the benefits of evidence based MAT while continuing to
encourage development of sober networks of support will
yield improved outcomes.

Pinnacle pulse spring summer 2016 edition

  • 1. 1 PINNACLE PULSE Summer is here and it is a very exciting time for Pinnacle As we move into summer, Pinnacle is continuing to grow and expand. By the end of the year we will have three new residential programs operating in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky (its 4th). In addition, we are in the process of opening three new opiate treatment programs in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia. As many of you know, our current investors have been with us from day one. Over the past two years they have been working with me and the senior team to find new investors that would take their place and help position the company for further growth. Since the beginning of this year we have been working with our investors to find a suitable replacement. Since January, investment groups from the west coast to the east coast expressed their desire to partner with Pinnacle. All viewed us as one of the best companies in the industry who had the right foundation and team to become the industry leader. You should all be as proud as I am in the work each of you do treating this devastating illness. The professionalism and passion each of you show did not go unnoticed. Many of these groups visited our programs and talked to staff, and they all walked away even more interested in being a part of our company. After a very rigorous five month process, I am very happy and excited to announce that Linden Capitol Partners LLC will be Pinnacle’s new financial partner. Linden is recognized as an industry leader and focuses purely on health- care investments. The advantage for us is having a partner who really knows the healthcare industry and can bring the breadth of resources necessary for our company to continue its growth. Their devotion to quality care and commitment to the highest standard of integrity is in total alignment with Pinnacle’s mission and goals. We are now going through the required process of notifying all of the regulatory bodies we are involved with of this change. We anticipate closing on our sale in August. Over the next month I will schedule several town hall calls. These calls will be purely informational and will allow you to ask questions about the sale. What I want to convey to you now is that this sale will not affect anything in how we operate on a day to day basis. Your position, salary/ benefits and our reporting structure will stay in place. What will change is our ability to grow and expand in even more states. This will give you even more opportunity to grow within the organization. Again, I want to thank each of you for the care you provide to those we serve. This is an exciting time for our company and all of you should be as proud of it as I am of you. — Joe CEO Corner SPRING/ SUMMER 2016
  • 2. 2 A message from Rebecca Gaskin, VP of Residential Services “Growth” is the word for the residential facilities as we move into the summer months, and we are exploding with possibilities as we prepare to add five additional residential facilities to the Pinnacle family. As we grab our hard hats and shovels for groundbreaking ceremonies, please stay tuned and follow our journey. The first facility to join the team will be our South Shore, KY, location opening in July. It is a true beauty of a facility on 37 acres, with high-end finishes, a pool area that would make most resorts envious, and a lake providing a serene setting ideal for personal reflection and healing. Patricia Moskalyk will assume the Executive Director position for this location. Many of you have worked with her over the past year in a variety of positions throughout Recovery Works and we are confident she will do a great job in her new position. Due to the impending sale of the company, however, publication of the newsletter was postponed. We apologize for this delay and hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Pinnacle Pulse.
  • 3. 3 NEWS FROM RESIDENTIAL (CONTINUED) Next up will be the Columbus, OH, location. Traci Mason, a local resident of the area, joined the team several months ago as Executive Director and has been very busy establishing herself in the community, introducing Recovery Works to the Columbus, OH, area and building her start-up team. Traci has a long history of leadership in the substance abuse field. She has been involved in prevention activities and sits on many state and local boards. The ground breaking event at the facility in April was standing room only, and proved a terrific event hosted by Traci and the marketing team, Evan Gold and Beth Prachar. We also welcome Valerie Thorn as the Executive Director of our new facility in Merrillville, IN. The state of the art facility will offer detox, residential, PHP and outpatient services and will have 40 beds. The facility plans to open in mid to late August. Valerie is a Family Nurse Practitioner and has years of experience working with people struggling with mental health and addiction disorders in a variety of settings. We would also like to introduce Colleen McCleery to the residential leadership team as the Regional Director for the KY Recovery Works programs. Colleen has over a decade of senior management experience in the field of addiction treatment and mental health throughout the state of Ohio. Her past responsibilities include operational oversight of multiple facilities in many states across the US. In addition, she is a current CARF surveyor for residential behavioral health treatment accreditation. She will assume her new role June 27th. As enticing as new and shiny can be, I would be amiss if I did not share the continued accomplishments and growth of the current RTCs. In March, all three RW locations in KY completed their CARF re-accreditation securing a three year outcome. Many thanks to Gloria Young in Mayfield for taking on and driving the process under Michelle Miller’s team’s guidance. In addition, each of the RW facility main campuses, and Endeavor House North and South, offer a free standing outpatient facility where patients who have completed higher level of care services with us, or referrals from the community directly, can participate in partial, intensive outpatient or group counseling sessions. These outpatient facilities allow PTC facilities to offer care throughout the traditional continuum. Endeavor House North (EHN) and South (EHS) – Keyport & Kearny, NJ Endeavor House experienced a great first quarter and has completed most of the projects started in the winter. EHN has been renovated and expanded and we are continuing to move other projects along, looking at ways to better utilize our space and build on what we have developed. In May, the admissions department moved from EHS to EHN, and we are excited to have everyone in one building now. The Keyport office building will be closing in the fall of 2016 and those other departments will be relocated to New Life Center, our outpatient services in Keyport. EHS will continue to service our patients for extended care. We are happy to report that we recently completed our patient satisfaction review for the 1st quarter and clinical scores were in the 78% range; we are striving for 85%. We were also able to determine where we need to put our efforts over the next quarter and look forward to making those changes. A personal message from Henry Bennett, MHS, Executive Director: I came to Endeavor House after retiring from 36 years in the behavioral health industry. I was recharged in coming and looking forward to my new role. The staff, clients, senior management and all involved have welcomed me and I am grateful. I want to express my gratitude every day to our clients and staff for the welcome they gave me. I feel strongly that how we treat our clients and staff shows our love for them and they deserve no less from us for the jobs they do. I am committed to this and it is my mission. Maya Angelou said, “People may not remember what you did for them, but they will remember how you made them feel.” Clients should walk away from the treatment experience feeling good about the process, and our dedicated staff helps them to achieve that. Traci Mason Valerie Thorn Colleen McCleery
  • 4. 4 NEWS FROM CLINICS Recovery Works (RW) – Elizabethtown (ETN), KY A tale of possibility… Teamwork is a concept we often hear thrown around in many companies, organized sports and personal relationships. The concept of being committed to something larger than ourselves is often something that falls short in delivery, however, and simply can go against human nature. But as we know, when it happens, so does magic! For the first half of this year, ETN illustrated the possibility of teamwork and selflessness. In February of this year, the facility found itself without an Executive Director and clinical director, and attempting to operate with one counselor meeting the needs of 55 clients. To top off that challenge, ETN had a CARF accreditation survey approaching quickly in mid-March and was running short in admissions. Initially, what felt like a sinking ship quickly found wings among the other RW facilities in KY, who pulled together to identify how they could help. From GTN, Paul (ED) spoke with Bob (counselor) who agreed to come and assist in caring for patients as they worked their recovery program. Bob’s easy demeanor, professionalism and group dynamics quickly helped stabilize the patient population. Lucy also set up shop at ETN and took on the admissions department. She stayed for two months and her expertise and commitment has proven itself over and over. GTN alone did not answer the call of need. Jennifer (ED) at Mayfield, also identified how her team could provide support. In a few days, Laura and Gloria came to provide counseling and patient care. Their sense of humor and relentless passion for people struggling with addiction disorders is contagious and soon an environment that felt desperate had hope. Creating the rhythm for this new orchestra came Patty Moskalyk as acting ED. She assumed residence in the ETN area, lived and breathed ETN seven days a week implementing structure, systems, programs and championing teamwork that would allow ETN to continue to serve patients, rebuild, successfully secure a three year CARF accreditation, and meet state requirements for service delivery. Though Patty became the conduit to connect the pieces on the ground, the corporate team support of Doreen (HR), Quality and Compliance (Michelle’s team) and finance (Solomon) became the foundation for the rebirth of ETN. And finally, as summer begins, we welcome Jayme Collins as the new Executive Director of ETN. Jayme has over 20 years’ senior executive experience most recently in the states of Kansas and Minnesota. Clinically trained, Jayme has experience in mental health, addiction treatment, and vocational rehabilitation services and has excelled in past positions in finance, employee engagement and turn-arounds. Many, many thanks to those that assisted at ETN, but also to those that stayed at their home facilities and increased their caseloads and tasks to operate short-handed so that RW as a “whole” would continue to flourish and as a “team” succeed. We wish Jayme and the whole team continued success! Jayme Collins, Executive Director
  • 5. 5 Recovery Works – Georgetown (GTN), KY The first quarter of 2016 proved to be both challenging and rewarding for the staff and patients at RW GTN. The greatest challenge we faced was the same as that encountered by our sister facilities in Elizabethtown and Mayfield, a three day long CARF survey. The outcome of the survey was unanimous approval of all our clinical services as well as administrative and facility functioning, leading to the issuance of a three year accreditation. To reach this status took an incredible amount of teamwork from the corporate Quality Improvement team through all the individuals on the ground, working at the facilities tirelessly for months on end to achieve our goal. The fruits of our labor, across all three KY facilities, assures our clients that they are being cared for with optimal programming and by highly skilled and trained clinicians, nurses and techs. In GTN, we also implemented a new clinical schedule that has been favorably received by staff and patients alike. It is actually a throwback to years ago when patients were held accountable by their peers each morning during a community meeting, followed by a day full of primarily group work. Patients are commenting that they enjoy the groups more and that they have the opportunity to interact with their counselors more. The challenge was to create a schedule that would give more patient/counselor time each day, yet still provide ample time for the counselors to complete their documentation, discharge planning, family meetings and more. To date the new schedule seems to be working quite well. We have also been busy licensing and opening a new IOP program at another sister site, NKY Med Center in Covington, KY. The center is one of Pinnacle’s largest and most successful outpatient clinics, doing an incredible job of providing methadone services to addicts in northern KY. Our IOP is conducted during evening hours, long after the clinic is closed. Jimmie Richardson, CADC, is the primary counselor for the program, while Kelly Pichotta is the program coordinator. Both Jimmy and Kelly also work at the clinic during the day. New employees at GTN include Ashley Semones, RN; Andrea Baker, LCSW, CADC; Clara Mitchell, CADC; Jimmie Richardson, CADC; Kelly Pichotta, IOP Coordinator; and Byron Watson, Resident Assistant. Recovery Works – Mayfield, KY This year has been an exciting time in Mayfield as we continue to learn how to grow effectively with our new opportunities of two recovery houses and an outpatient site. We have seen growth in our outpatient program as we now have a full staff who offer a diverse and unique program for clients who are ready for the next step after residential. Clients and staff are active in our community with activities such as shopping, going to church, movies, and civic activities around town. Our belief in providing opportunities for healthier living and life skills drives our desire to increase meaningful experiences for sober living. On May 21st our campus hosted a day-long celebration of recovery. There was family involvement that included games for parents and their children as well as for adults. Food was plentiful and ranged from cotton candy and popcorn to grilled burgers with all the trimmings. We were pleased to see many alumni in attendance, some of whom spoke at the 12 step meeting that closed the evening. During the event we dedicated an on-campus memorial to former clients who have succumbed to the disease of addiction. The memorial will serve as a permanent reminder of lives lost and remembered by those of us who have walked the journey of life with them. A special area on the grounds will be maintained and promoted as a place for meditation and contemplation as we continue on our quest for peace and healing. • 6. 6 NEWS FROM CLINICS (CONTINUED) VA/KY Region In February 2016, a quarterly leadership meeting was held in Lexington, KY, with PTC Residential Programs, KY/VA Outpatient Programs and Pinnacle corporate team members. It was a great opportunity for each director and department to share information about their services and how to integrate care for patients throughout the Pinnacle continuum of care. In the spirit of bringing our divisions together, a team building exercise was held at BreakOut. Teams were divided into a Derby Heist and a Kidnapping Theme where each team had one hour to “break out” of their respective rooms. It was a fun activity and a valuable experience for everyone involved. Northern KY Medical (NKY) – Covington, KY NKY Med has seen a very busy 2016 serving the Northern KY/Greater Cincinnati community as one of the largest opiate treatment providers in the region. An expansion of the lobby was completed to better handle the fl ow of patients throughout the day. NKY Med also welcomed Recovery Works IOP services, adding an additional layer of recovery support and treatment for the patients of NKY Med, RW GTN, and the community. NKY Med welcomed their third Clinical Supervisor as Carrie Kunzelman joined the team, bringing years of experience in not only substance abuse, but also in mental health counseling. NKY Med was honored to be asked to participate in an event hosted by Northern Kentucky University honoring journalist and author of “Dreamland,” Sam Quinones. The two-day event was designed to educate the students, the community and social service professionals on the rise of the heroin epidemic plaguing our area. Jessica Allender, Community Relations Coordinator, was asked to speak on a panel during the event as an MAT expert. This was just one of many events NKY Med was honored to be a part of during the first quarter aimed at educating the community on MAT. • 9. 9 NEWS FROM CLINICS (CONTINUED) Greenfield Counseling (GC) – Meadville, PA Summer has come to Greenfield Counseling! We have been preparing for the official change in licensure with DDAP, received our updated occupancy permit and implemented all Pinnacle Treatment Centers’ policies and procedures. Since the end of 2015 our census has grown from 255 to 290. We also had two long time counselors resign in April to pursue other career goals. The increase in census and departure of our colleagues created additional stress for the counselors, nurses and receptionist. They handled the changes seamlessly though, and ensured the focus remained on the highest quality of care to our patients. We would also like to welcome Erica Deeter, Counselor Assistant to our team. Her experience working with children and families will be highly beneficial to our patients with children. • 10. 10 NEWS FROM CLINICS (CONTINUED) Upper Midwest Region Ann Arbor Treatment Services (AATS) – Ann Arbor, MI AATS is continuing to integrate our services into the community. We recently signed a Medicaid contract and hope to begin providing those services soon to those who are in need and qualify. We are also preparing to begin providing Suboxone services in the near future. The clinic is actively involved in the Washtenaw Health Initiative (WHI), where local health issues are addressed through community-wide action. The WHI board appoints committees to address the identifi ed predominant health issues in the county. Substance abuse and more specifi cally, Opioid Addiction, have been in the top two identifi ed issues for the past two years. Some of the measures the board has been able to implement have been equipping and training the local Sheriff’s departments with the use of Naloxone, which resulted in a saved life within the fi rst seven days of implementation. AATS has also provided targeted advertising and communication in the community to help reduce the stigma associated with substance use. In addition, we have been able to bring in the developer of the Lazarus Project to speak to over 100 concerned community professionals and treatment providers. The Lazarus Project is aimed at educating/training/involving communities in reducing the high death rates of opiate and heroin users. Although we have seen a reduction in the rate of deaths since the WHI began its work, there is much more to do. We are pleased to introduce two new employees for the first quarter: Shane Mayes, Receptionist, and Dr. Adu. Welcome aboard! Sterling Heights Treatment Services (SHTS) – Sterling Heights, MI Sterling Heights Treatment Services recently formed a partnership in the community with a local, non-profit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault organization. Turning Point Inc., will offer our patients the opportunity for advocacy services such as crisis intervention, housing, employment, individual counseling, group counseling and self-help groups. These resources allow patients continued growth within the community with access to resources, education, medical services and mental health services. As is our mission, this helps to ensure we are treating the whole person. Awareness of the need for routine assessment for referrals is something SHTS strives to achieve. These partnerships make it possible for smooth transitions and long-term success of our patients!
  • 11. 11 NEWS FROM CLINICS (CONTINUED) New Jersey and Northeastern Pennsylvania Delaware Valley Medical (DVM) – Pennsauken, NJ DVM is pleased to report that our Operation SAL has been running successfully. We have maintained attendance with the program’s clients and have seen progression in managing their substance use disorders. Every week, these clients are attending IOP and engaging in individual therapy sessions. Operation SAL clients are also provided with funding for treatment in order to help decrease the rate of Narcan administration and achieve the program’s goal to save at least one life. During the first quarter, DVM staff and patients partnered together to create Valentine’s cards for children with severe illnesses at the Ronald McDonald House. Staff and clients also participated in donating Easter gift baskets to those clients who were in need of presents for their children this past holiday. These activities have helped to increase the patient-staff alliance and a positive work atmosphere while also providing the opportunity for community outreach. DVM recently celebrated the retirement of Wanda Friend who has been an asset to our team since the beginning. Wanda’s hard work and dedication was celebrated by staff with a retirement party. Wanda has been a source of support for patients and staff members over the years and we wish her well in her future endeavors. Staff at DVM have continued to participate in self-care awareness and support, and are currently in the midst of a fitness for summer challenge. Our staff have been eating healthy and exercising to increase personal care and overall health and wellness, along with a little friendly competition. Earlier this year we hosted a successful Family Education Session to encourage families to be a part of their loved one’s recovery process. Our staff has increased their focus on caring for pregnant clients through updated literature as well as more in-depth coordination with community resources. We also recently completed a successful transition of our program from Tower to SMART software management. Our team has been working diligently to market our treatment services and integrate our program into the community. The high quality of services provided by our team has contributed to a growth in census this past quarter, which allowed us to hire additional staff. This quarter we happily welcomed several new staff members to our team, two counselors: Lizzette Darouichi and Caitlin Moore; and two clerical staff: Dori Vansant and John Brady. In addition to changes taking place inside the building, the patients of the Advocacy Team planned a “Clean-Up Day” for outside of the building. On this day, patients and staff volunteered to ensure the outside property was clean and presentable. MPM went through a successful CARF inspection in April and has received a three year accreditation. Another audit took place in April by the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission due to the funding they offer some patients who lack medical assistance but qualify for county funding. We are proud that there were no citations noted during this audit. Staff at MPM have started to attend the Monroe County Opioid Task Force meetings held monthly. The April meeting consisted of a Q&A for MPM staff which offered some education to the other attendees in regard to medication assisted treatment. We would also like to welcome back Brooke Hocking and congratulate her and her husband on the new addition to their family. Welcome Calvin to the world! The Medical Department at SLM continues to be run by two full time and one part time nurse. As our census expands, the nurses stay busy with the daily operations that keep the department running smoothly. We recently transitioned into the new SMART software and we are eagerly learning the program. Both of our physicians are already familiar with the program and are using at other facilities, and are excited to make the switch as well. SLM recently reached a census milestone: MMT is 400, Suboxone has reached 108 and the non-medication program has a census of 35 clients. Jennifer Lissitz FINANCE DEPARTMENT Emily Bloemer has joined the RW Finance staff as a part-time Accounting Assistant for the RW Mayfield location. She is currently working on her accounting degree at Murray State University and will graduate in December. Pinnacle would also like to introduce the newest member of our growing IT Department, Chris Newsom. Chris brings 7+ years of IT experience and will be a great asset to Pinnacle as we expand our physical IT reach into Kentucky. He will be based out of our Kentucky administrative office in Georgetown. Emily Bloemer Chris Newsome, IT

In the late 19th century, Opiate prescribing tripled and there was a process of re-educating physicians that resulted in the percentage of opiate containing prescriptions dispensed in 1908 dropping to 3.6% from a high of 14.5% in 1888. In 2016, as the opiate scripts lessen, the drug cartels have filled in with low cost Heroin, utilizing marketing ploys that would make Big Pharma jealous. The cutting of heroin with liquid Fentanyl that forms clumps of extremely high potency drug and the complications of injecting it have created a growing public health crisis. The opiate prescribing problem is not just from the notorious “Pill Mills” that have mostly been shut down. A 2009 study of Mayo Clinic showed that 1 in 4 patients treated for acute pain became long-term users of opioids. The CDC recently released guidelines for opioid prescribing that includes an observation that “3 days or less prescribed opioids for acute pain will often be sufficient; and more than 7 days will rarely be needed.” These guidelines also include recommendations for MAT with Suboxone and Methadone for people diagnosed with Opiate Use Disorder. The Harrison Act of 1915 outlawed opiate prescribing for addicts and there is still stigma persisting against evidence-based MAT. Non-opiate Vivitrol injections have become very attractive for many and the soon to be FDA approved long acting buprenorphine implants show great promise. The solution to the current public health crisis of addiction is increasing access to quality treatment. The kindness and empathy of Pinnacle employees encourages people to persist in their efforts to recover from the terrible scourges of addiction. Our efforts to educate our clients in the benefits of evidence based MAT while continuing to encourage development of sober networks of support will yield improved outcomes. NEWS FROM DR. JOHNSTON
