PhD Projects PhD Student Clíona Hensey French HardimanResearch Building Funding: Reconstructive performances of memory and trauma in autobiographical writing by daughters of harkis Irish Research Council My research explores the autobiographical writing of daughters of harkis (Algerian men who fought as auxiliary soldiers in the French army during the Algerian War of Independence, 1954-1962). I examine the role of these second-generation authors in contesting the stigma and myths surrounding this community through their creative, reconstructive engagement with the legacy of their fathers’ traumatic memories and their own complex identities.

The present study aims to understand, through theoretical & archival research and the analyses of texts and contexts, the apparatuses by which the meaning of ‘the Republic’ has become temporarily fixed and subsequently reactivated in contestation over its content and character.

National Council for Curriculum and Assessment This study aims to investigate the impact of standardised assessment within the Irish primary school context. Qualitative data which has been obtained from teachers, principals and assessment experts (via online questionnaires and face-to-face interviews) provides the researcher with an opportunity to explore the manner in which this form of assessment has impacted upon pupils, teachers and schools within the primary school context, as well as how it has influenced the formation of assessment policy at a national level.

PhD Projects PhD Student Christine Neer Old& Middle Irish and Celtic Studies School of Humanities Hardiman Research Building A Study of Tochmarca ‘Wooing Tales’ in Old, Middle, and Early-Modern Irish Literature Tochmarca are concerned with the courtships of royal or heroic individuals. Significantly, ‘wooed’ women play crucial, active roles in the tochmarc’s events. Women’s skills are verbal and they display great dexterity in speech- acts such as riddling dialogue, poetic recitation, and keening. Some women also claim self-ownership by eloping, or arranging their own marriages. I am interested, therefore, in women’s oral performances in tochmarca as unique forms of gendered agency, as well as images of women as physically active agents.

Irish Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship (2014-2018) My doctoral project aims to unveil how minority and indigenous women narrate and interpret human rights and gender equality in post-2011 Morocco. Through the analysis of silenced voices, muted narratives and power relations, my research also attempts to shed light on the often “uncomfortable marriage” between minority’s and women’s rights and how the former can be at times be detrimental to the latter.

The project adopts a multi- method case study approach that combines quantitative and qualitative research techniques including semi- structured interviews, quantitative food sustainability assessment and observation. PhD Projects PhD Student Suzanne vanOsch Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) Whitaker Institute Hardiman Research Building Funding: Analysing the Market Potential of Sustainability in Aquaculture Funded by the Beaufort Research Awards Fish farming is criticized for negatively influencing the environment. This PhD analyses the potential of a specific form of aquaculture, where several species are combined in a production process to create an artificial eco-system. The environmental impact of such a fish farm is believed to be lower. This PhD aims to analyse the financial feasibility of this production system and to determine consumers’ attitudes of and value for sustainability in seafood production.

Fully autonomous weapons are designed to engage targets without any involvement of a human being. Often referred to as 'Killer Robots‘, the computers are programmed to 'decide' whether a human or object is to be ‘engaged’. The Law of Armed Conflict (also called International Humanitarian Law) proscribes when it is legal to engage a target in armed conflict. This project will research whether autonomous weapon systems can operate within the terms of the Law of Armed Conflict.

The project is looking at the prospective use of crowdsourcing by scientific research funding agencies. Qualitative, interpretivist approaches are used in the construction of a framework for the evalaution of crowdsourcing practices.

However, when modelling many real-world systems it is not always realistic to assume that the assumptions of smoothness and determinism hold. We investigate systems which are both nonsmooth and noisy, which have so far seen very limited research. In particular we wish to establish how the features of nonsmooth systems can be affected by the addition of noise and how these effects relate to real-world systems in areas such as climate change, finance and mechanics. It identifies philosophical, social and international legal features that impact on this right. To this end, the project analyses different aspects of peace violation, such as direct and structural violence. It examines the attributed existing international jurisdiction, and the possible defence tactics against violence.

Based on these costs, this research provides the estimates of aggregate macroeconomic loss in Pakistan, Ghana and South Sudan.

The unique nature of Liberia offers writers a singular paradigm that transforms and destabilises understandings of discourses regarding race, nation, colonization and the nature of dominance.

Sovereign States’ practices and laws in the social sphere addressed to this particularly vulnerable group represents a critical test to assess their compliance to commitments of universal and non-discriminatory protection of ‘human’ rights.

PhD Projects PhD Student Clíona Hensey French HardimanResearch Building Funding: Reconstructive performances of memory and trauma in autobiographical writing by daughters of harkis Irish Research Council My research explores the autobiographical writing of daughters of harkis (Algerian men who fought as auxiliary soldiers in the French army during the Algerian War of Independence, 1954-1962). I examine the role of these second-generation authors in contesting the stigma and myths surrounding this community through their creative, reconstructive engagement with the legacy of their fathers’ traumatic memories and their own complex identities.

This project will focus on Dee’s contribution to English imperial and navigational thought during the early years of English expansion (approximately 1555-1584)

This project seeks to clarify Husserl’s conceptions of world as described in his middle and late philosophy, trace the essential linkages between both conceptions and demonstrate that they are not mutually exclusive but, instead, unifiable models of one objective world that is not the creation of a self-referential, solipsistic consciousness.

This research aims to explore the challenges faced by Jordanian women entrepreneurs, in particular the constraints posed by labour market and social policies that limit women’s economic participation in Jordan. The study also examines the links between women’s economic participation and economic growth to understand the critical role of women entrepreneurs in Jordan’s economy.

It is part of their What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls’ programme. For more information: www.whatworks.co.za VAWG is generally treated as a social issue and a significant violation of human rights. However, there are various dimensions of VAWG, which have serious macroeconomic implications that have serious consequences for inclusive economic growth. This PhD research aims to empirically investigate these macroeconomic implications based on Social Accounting Matrix and Computable General Equilibrium model and offer policy choices for sustainable and inclusive growth in Pakistan.
