1.
What is PBLL?
Let’s tackle defining
project-based
LANGUAGE learning.
“Project-based learning is a teaching method in which
students gain knowledge and skills by working
for an extended period of time
to investigate and respond to an
authentic, engaging and complex
question, problem, or challenge.

48 Hours in Your Town: Real-World PBLL for the Novice Spanish Classroom

Editor's Notes

  • #3 4 mins SEC: This is who I am, I had this idea for a unit, then what it turned into Shannon: What attracted you about the idea, deciding to join - That collaborative community of like-minded educators. Great practice space to make this stuff happen!
  • #4 30 seconds
  • #5 Give audience 60 seconds to read & digest. Ask for questions, things that stick out, things they didn’t know were part of PBL, etc. How these showed up in our units - SEC, gaining knowledge, spent so much time in city guides, restaurant reviews, museum reviews, scheduled by type of place and used TripAdvisor so much. Kept identifying ways people described these places in negative and positive ways to develop that vocabulary. Shannon - how were these elements shown in your experience? - Extended period of time created space for exciting, authentic experiences that might have otherwise felt like “I don’t have time for this” problems. Lunch at an authentic MX restaurant, Skype with classroom in Mexico. Opportunities to compare products and perspectives (one of those standards that I never know how to fit in, but happens naturally here). tops 10 minutes here.
  • #6 SEC I can go through this slide. 5 mins
  • #7 SEC mention this slide 1 minute
  • #8 BOTH: in 3 minutes: ask to raise hands by what language they speak and what level so they can group themselves in a different way if they want to. Remind to use the handout.
  • #9 2 & 3 go hand-in-hand Each bullet point - 2 minutes BOTH circulate and help
  • #10 Each bullet point - 2 minutes
  • #12 1 minute here SEC describe process, what they’ll get
  • #13 BOTH describe what challenged us. SEC: Multiple levels of proficiency, no grades to “force” product completion, limited contact time Shannon: Differentiation is easy with the authentic resources inherent in the unit, but hard to help students see that there objectives that are tailored and leveled for their individual learning needs, how to encourage TL use during independent work time
  • #14 Listen to 2 or 3 goals
  • #15 click through this
  • #16 answer questions, go back to previous for links
