The internet is a part of nearly
everyone‘s lives these days.
But is this a good thing?
Let‘s practise discussing the internet
and learn how to express consent and
consent with some conditions.
4
www.lingoda.com 4
Preview and warm-up
■ In this lesson, you will practise talking about the possibilities of the internet
and its advantages and disadvantages.
In the future, even humans will be digital products.
5
www.lingoda.com
Consent means that someone has agreed to do something. When we
consent in discussion, we are expressing agreement.
Restriction means to place a limit on something. Restricting
statements express consent with some conditions or limitations.
I think we agree on this issue in general, but I think there are
more risks when it comes to personal security than you are
willing to acknowledge.
restricting statements
consenting statements
6
www.lingoda.com
As with restricting statements, limiting statements show that there are
limits to a person’s agreement with another person’s statement.
I can only agree with you up to a point. In 50 years time,
technology will have changed far more than you are willing to
admit.
limiting statements

Risk and danger are synonyms.
They both mean that there is the potential for something to go wrong.
Risk is more commonly used to express a danger that has not yet
happened, but that may happen.
Danger is more commonly used when a hazard is known to exist, such as
when there are slippery rocks ahead.
A broken electricity cord is a danger to everyone as it can cause
a fire or electrocute someone.
danger
risk
There is a risk of the internet overtaking our lives if we don’t
tread carefully.
8
www.lingoda.com
exhaustion
Exhaustion is a noun. It means extreme tiredness or that something has
been all used up so that there is nothing left of it.
exhaust
Exhaust is both a noun and a verb. The verb form has the same meaning as
exhaustion. The noun form means gases produced by cars and other
mechanical equipment.
comparatively
Comparatively is an adverb. It is used to suggest that something is of a
moderate or mild degree compared to something else.
potentially
Potentially is an adverb. It means that something could happen in future,
but it is not certain that it will happen. You can use this word to qualify your
opinions.
New words

The future of the internet
I do not consent to the sharing of my
data to third parties over the internet.
The problem is that there is no limit to
how much time people spend on the
internet.
I think social media companies should
have more restricted privacy settings.
There is the potential for the internet
to destroy the natural bonds of our
society.
10
www.lingoda.com
The future of the internet
The risk is that humans will forget that
there is a real, natural world outside of
the internet.
I think the internet poses a
comparatively small risk to our safety
compared to other things.
The danger is that children are exposed
to too much false information over the
internet.
The production of digital products is
going to lead to the exhaustion of rare
metals used to produce them.
11
www.lingoda.com
In this lesson, we are going to critically look at the question of whether the future of
the internet will bring advantages to our lives or not.
So put your thinking caps on as we are going to practise expressing our consent,
limited consent, or disagreement to different perspectives on the internet.
Expressing your opinion about the
internet
I agree with this statement, but only on the condition
that governments do more to regulate big data companies.

Categorise the below statements
Agreement Partial Agreement
Practise using these statements to express agreement or partial
agreement with this statement:
Only good things can come from the development of digital
technologies.
Absolutely!
I couldn’t agree more.
That is so true.
That’s true in this case,
but I’ve heard that…
I agree with some, but
not all, of what you
are saying…
That sounds right to
me.
That may be the case;
however,…
It’s really a matter of
opinion. The latest
examples suggest
that…
I see your point, but I
am not convinced by
your conclusion that…
Comparatively
speaking, I think you
are right.
You’re right, but there
is the possibility of…
I think you’ve hit the
nail on the head
[idiom].
14
www.lingoda.com
Agree or disagree? Discuss whether you think the future of
the internet has any of these risks
That data stealing will
create chaos.
That there will be a lot
more pollution due to
the production and
waste of digital
products.
That life will become a lot
easier because no one
will have to travel to work
anymore, but people will
forget to exercise and
become overweight.
That corporations will
use the internet to
spread lies.
That personal data will
be easily stolen by
cyber-hackers.
That life outside of the
internet will no longer
matter.
15
www.lingoda.com
With a classmate or your teacher create a role play between these two
people using the statements you have just learnt.
Role play about the future of the internet
Student A buys a new mobile
phone every year and is
looking forward to the next
phone. She loves the internet
and can’t wait for the future.
Student B agrees that the
internet has many advantages,
but she is worried about how
the internet is used by bad
people. She is also worried
that young children spend too
much time in front of
computer screens.
I am looking forward
to a future where
everything can be
done online and I
never have to leave
my room.
But what will happen
if we become so
addicted to social
media that we forget
about real people?

The future of the internet
Do you think the
internet is destroying
our right to privacy?
Slowly, privacy
laws are
catching up to
the reality.

Accessibility means that something can be attained, reached, entered,
or easily understood.
The internet is not yet fully accessible to blind and vision
impaired people. Many websites still require visual support to
be fully accessible.

The internet is such a convenience. I can even pay for my petrol online!

The cancer was still in its developmental stages so it could still be treated
with chemotherapy.

data trading
Data trading has become quick and easy through the internet. Currencies
are exchanged in the blink of an eye.
21
www.lingoda.com
The future of the internet
The internet has increased accessibility
for disabled people because they now
have many more ways to communicate.
I think the internet is still in its
developmental phase, and we are yet to
fully realise its potential.
For me, the internet is just complete
convenience.
Data trading is now big business.

physical mobility. It means they can
do all their shopping online and
participate in online platforms that
would be difficult to access in an

are being respected. I love my job
because it means I get to talk with

an area that is literally changing the
way the world works.
Like most things, the internet and
other digital media platforms have

internet is still in its _______________
phase and we’re still not sure what
the future will look like.
Whilst the internet and social media
poses some dangers to the social
