4. Principles of Islamic belief or 5 Pillars of Islam
Tawheed "the Oneness of God"
Adl “Divine Justice"
Nubuwwah “Prophethood"
Imamate “Leadership of Mankind"
Ma'ad "Resurrection" of the dead
5. Tawheed "the Oneness of God"
Monotheism
The cornerstone of Islamic beliefs is tawheed, the belief in Unity or
Oneness of God which is also known as monotheism.
Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.p) started his mission with this
sentence:
O people say:
Lā ilāha il-lal lāh
There is no god but Allāh
To gain salvation
This is the first part of the Shahada (the Islamic declaration
of faith) and it is the declaration of belief in the oneness of
God.
6. The word “Allāh” grammatically speaking is
unique. It has no plural and no feminine. So
this name itself reflects light upon the fact that
God is one and only one; He has neither any
partner nor any equal. The name cannot be
adequately translated by the word “God”
because God can be transformed into “gods”
and “goddess”.
7. The Message of Tawheed:
The first part of the Shahadah consists of two statements: A
negative statement (“There is no god”) and a positive (“but
Allāh”).
The negative statement leads a Muslim throughout his life not
only in religious matters but also in social affairs. “There is no
god” shows a Muslim that nothing in the universe is superior to
him. It is observed in the Qur'ān that He is the One who created
for you all that is in the earth.(2:29)
So a Muslim knows that nothing in this world is to be
worshipped.
Neither stone nor trees, neither animals nor human beings,
neither the Sun, the Moon, nor the stars can be worshipped,
because everything is created for his benefit.
8. When a Muslim thus rejects every falsehood and
every idea of nature worship, idol-worship and
human-worship, he is ready to believe in the positive
truth of Tawheed. Believing in a Supreme Being gives
an aim to our life and provides a purpose for our
actions. If man had been left with the wrong
impression that there was no God at all, his life would
have been aimless, and an aimless life is dangerous.
So it is added that there is no god “but Allāh”.
9. Imam Ali
The True Successor of our prophet
And the ocean of science
In the middle of the battle of JAMAL (camel), one of the Arabs
came to Imam Ali and asked:
Do you say that Allah is One?
The companions rushed to him and told him: Don’t you see
that we are in the middle of the war?
But Imam Ali(p.b.u.h) told them stop. What he wants, is what
we want from those we are in war with. (meaning Tawheed)
Then said:
10. To know God is to know his oneness. To say that God is one has four
meanings: two of them are false and two are correct.
* As for the two meanings that are false, one is that a person should
say "God is one" and be thinking of a number and counting. This is
false because that which has no second cannot enter into the
category of number. Do you not see that those who say that God is a
third of a trinity fall into this infidelity? Another meaning is to say,
"So-and-So is one of his people," namely, a species of this genus or a
member of this species. This meaning is also false when applied to
God, because it implies likening something to God, whereas God is
above all likeness. As to the two meanings that are correct when
applied to God, one is that it should be said that "God is one" in the
sense that there is no likeness to him among things. Another is to say
that "God is one" in the sense that there is no multiplicity or division
conceivable in Him, neither outwardly, nor in the mind, nor in the
imagination. God alone possesses such a unity.
11. In this regard
Shirk
Associating others with God is known as shirk and it is in
contradiction to Tawheed. It is usually but not always in the form
of idolatry and knowing others independent from Allah in
effectiveness. Shirk is divided into two categories:
Greater shirk (Shirk-al-Akbar): open and apparent;
Lesser shirk (Shirk-al-Asghar): concealed or hidden.
Greater Shirk consists of the above-mentioned deeds. A person
commits lesser shirk (Shirk-al-Asghar) or hidden polytheism when
he claims to believe in God but his thoughts and actions do not
reflect his belief. There are also minor forms of Shirk, they must be
avoided as well; these include for instance committing a good deed
to show off. Within Islam, shirk is an unforgivable crime; God may
forgive any sin if one dies in that state except for committing
shirk, repentance is required for its forgiveness.
}An-Nisa 48}
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what
is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with
Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
