Definition: Oceanography is the study
of physical, chemical and biological
characteristics of oceans.
According to Albert Defant,
“Oceanography is the branch of science
concerned with the ocean and the
phenomena occurring therein.
According to J. Proudman,
“Oceanography as the study of the
fundamental principles of dynamics and
thermodynamics in relation to the
physical properties of sea water and
biological studies.
परिभाषा: समुद्रविज्ञान महासागर ों की
भौविक, रासायवनक और जैविक विशेषिाओों
का अध्ययन है।

4. Scope of Oceanography

Scope of oceanography can be broadly
categorized into following sub-headings.
1. Economic Based Scope of Oceanography
2. Social Based Scope of Oceanography
Economic Based Scope:
1. Marine Culture: Marine culture includes
the cultivation of marine organism i.e. various
flora and fauna of marine based. Example-
Catching of fishes, Cultivation of Pearls,
Algae etc. Oceans now a days provide food
and livelihood to millions of people all around
the world and study of oceanography provide
very crucial information which helps in
promoting marine culture.

5. 2. Mineral Extraction: Almost every
element which is found on land surface is
found in oceans however their quantity
may vary from place to place. Oceans are
the most important source of common salt
from ancient time. The study of oceanic
surface provide useful data related to
depositions of various elements. Metallic
ores of various metals like copper, zinc,
lead, silver, iron, magnesium, nickel,
cobalt, zinc, barium etc. are found along
destructive and constructive margin of
plates. Deposits of nodules of manganese
and phosphorus are found in large
concentration in ocean basins. Large
concentration of diamonds along coast of
south west Africa, is also found.

6. 3. Source of Energy: Oceans are the
valuable source of energy. Wave
energy, tidal energy and OTEC (Ocean
Thermal Energy Conversion) are the
major sources through which kinetic and
mechanical energy of oceanic water can
be converted into electrical energy.
Petroleum gas and petroleum oil in
huge quantity are also found along the
continental shelf and slope in oceans.
Geological & Tidal knowledge of ocean
helps in extraction of such energy.
4. International Trade: Oceans provide
both raw material as well as very chief
transportation water ways to carry out
trade. Study of ocean bottom
topography helps in the maintaining
such trade smoothly across countries.

7. 5. Tourism Development: Coral reefs
are known as tropical forest of oceans
and provide beauty scenes which attract
tourist along with them beaches also
provide huge tourism base. Core
knowledge of such an islands and
beaches i.e. Tide range and interval,
other oceanic hazards like tsunami etc.
help us in maintaining such a sites safe
for tourism activities.
Social Based Scope:
1. Human Settlement: Coastal areas
provide optimum climatic conditions and
sea food for human settlement. Because
of this most of mega cities lies along the
coast.

सुरवक्षि बनाए रखने में सहायिा करिा है।

8. 2. Oceanic Hazards: Study of movement
of oceanic water help us in understanding
oceanic hazards related with it. And with
the help of detail information planning
related with activities like fishing, shipping
etc. can be done in advance.
3. Defense & Security: Oceans provide
natural obstacle to enemy and helps in
maintaining defense and security of a
country. Location of islands in territorial
waters provide a platform for establishing
defense and checking post.
