all’orizzonte minerale A.
mentre l’orizzonte OF è stato campionato solo dove presente, cioè in 5 punti. Prima del prelievo è stato
misurato lo spessore degli orizzonti organici.
I campioni sono stati fatti essiccare in stufa a 70 °C centigradi, poi pesati. Dopo miscelazione accurata,
materiale a granulometria omogenea e molto fine.

sottraendo CO2 all’atmosfera.

Title of Final Dissertation:
SOILS UNDER QUERCUS RUBRA AND SOILS UNDER QUERCUS ROBUR IN THE
LOMBARDY PLAIN: COMPARISON OF THE EPIGEIC ORGANIC MATTER (LITTER)
Abstract of Final Dissertation:
The Quercus rubra spreading, occured particularly in the last decades, is causing the replacement of the
autochthonous Quercus robur in the woods of the Lombardy plain.
The study investigated the consequences of the vegetational transformation, comparing the epigeic
organic matter (litter) included both in Quercus rubra’s soils and in Quercus robur’s soils of different
ages.
The litter can be constitued by different organic horizons: in this case by OL and OF. The OL horizon is
constitued by vegetal residues (mainly entire leafs, lightly modified or weakly fragmented) whose
structure is visible to a naked eye. The OF horizon, when it is present, is placed under OL, and it is
made by vegetal minced residues, transformed but still recognizable to a naked eye, mixed to a variable
quantity of minute organic matter. Under the organic horizons we find the mineral horizon A.
The litter samples were collected in three different places: Parco Nord Milano, Parco di Monza and
Parco della Brughiera Briantea. The choice was determinated taking into consideration the age of the
Quercus rubra plants: approximately 30 years ago for Parco Nord Milano, approximately 70 years ago
for Parco della Brughiera Briantea and approximately 90 years ago for Parco di Monza.
On each park two areas, not too far one from the other, were selected, one mainly covered by Quercus
rubra and the other one by Quercus robur. Within each area the litter was sampled from three different
points. The samples were taken placing on the soil surface a squared frame 33 x 33 cm and later by

collecting all the litter inside the frame. In all the point (# 18) the OL horizon OL was collected, while
the OF horizon was sampled only where present (in 5 points). Before taking the sample, the thichness of
the organic horizon was measured.
The samples were dehydrated in a stove at 70 °C and then weighted. After an accurate mixing a part
was first triturated and then milled in a grinding mill with agate balls, in order to obtain a very thin
material having an homogeneus granulometry. Finally in the laboratory the content of cellulose, lignin
and ashes was measured.
The analytical method (Van Soest) allows to determine fibrous residual composed of cellulose, lignin
and mineral salts. At the beginning the sample is boiled with an acid-detergent for 60’, filtered on a
crucible, washed with water and acetone, dehydrated in a stove and weighted, obtaining the acid-
detergente fibre (ADF). This portion is then boiled with concentrate sulphuric acid, then filtered on a
crucible, dehydrated and weighted, obtaining the acid-detergent lignin (ADL). The contents of ashes is
determinated by the weight after incineration in muffle at 500 °C.
Considering that the cellulose is a polysaccharide easily attachable by bacterial flora, a litter with a lot
of cellulose is rapidly mineralized, so the organic matter does not accumulate and the soil remains more
fertile.
The lignin is more difficulty degradable, because it has a complex chemical structure rich in aromatic
rings; if the quantity of lignin is high the organic matter increases and remains into the soil as a long term
reserve of fertility, and at the same time removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
The average weight of the litter is rather variable, from 445 g m-2
of the Quercus rubra in the Parco di
Monza to 1221 g m-2
of the Quercus rubra in the Parco Brughiera Briantea. The accumulation is smaller
in the case of younger woods (Parco Nord Milano), but without a significant statistic difference.
From the data obtained about the litter weight, there is no significant difference between a place and the
other. Similarly there is no significant weight difference between Quercus rubra litter and Quercus
robur litter.
The results of the chemical fractionation of the litter showed that the cellulose rappresents on the
average the 30% of the dry weight, while the lignin content is rather variable, but lower than the
cellulose. The data concerning the ashes are interesting, showing values up to 20% of the dry weight. It
is likely that in the litter (mainly in the OF horizon) there is a quantity of mineral material coming from
the underliying A horizon and mixed up by the edaphic fauna.
