2. Returning to
embrace
Jon Buck’s sculpture aim for this piece was to
show a couple locked together, gazing into
each other’s eyes. Jon Buck is interested in
how the natural world and life forms (humans)
can connect. He is interested in art out side the
western world and their traditions especially
African sculptures.
The sculpture connotes to me love and the closeness
humans have to one another especially to the ones
that they love and care about. It connotes to me
especially humans in a relationship are intertwined
with each other and they know the ins and outs of
each other especially with how they feel. In terms of
denotation I can see that the two faces are looking
lovingly into each others eyes/ this connotes that a
simple looks and gestures can mean a lot to people
and can make them feel a broad range of emotions. It
shows that they can become one living thing but be
very different at the same time.
3. The roof top garden
The location of Canary Wharf and the Crossrail
station are north of Greenwich which is where
the Greenwich mean time is. The west India
docks is on the prime meridian this divides the
eastern and western hemispheres.
The position of where the eastern hemisphere
meets the western hemisphere was the
inspiration for the roof top garden. It inspired
the roof top garden to be put into two
geographic zones this means that there will be
different kinds of plants and trees in different
places in the roof top garden for example the
soft tree fern and sweet gum tree in the west and
the Japanese Maple tree and black/golden
bamboo in the east they have done the to show
the varied plant life in the world.
While being in the roof top garden I thought that
it was interesting how they have gotten plant life
into a building especially from all over the
world. What I was thinking about in the roof top
garden is how they must have had to dig up
these different plants from all over the world
and put it into the garden which means that they
are disturbing nature and the elements around
the different plant life. Going to the roof top
garden has started making me think about the
idea of how we are disturbing nature and how
we are removing it from its original location. it
also makes me think about how there is not
enough greenery everywhere and how
buildings are being built in very free space.
Which could make London look dull and grey.
4. Ship building/Quays
While looking at the quays and the ship
exhibition I have found out about the
different kind of boats that were used and
how they were built. I have found out
that there was a very big port on the
docks and I have noticed that everywhere
in the docklands have significantly
changed from the past we do not use it to
trade to sell different types of products .
I find it interesting how they used boats
as a form of transporting different kinds
of products from one place to another.
And how they were used for benefiting
London in terms of the trading system as
in products but there are negatives of
trading as well.
5. Execution on the docks
When I saw this display in the museum
It made me realise that there were have
started to get the sense of what the
docks were about and what happened on
them. There were positive and negative
aspects of the docks and what was done
on them. However this display shows
the very negative aspect for the
execution dock and the contraption that
was used to mock people and to make
an example of them. Large crowds were
attracted to the killing of the pirates that
were terrorising the sea and they were
bough to London the be charged by the
high court.
The gibbet is execution by hanging
which is very horrible and morbid.
Large crowds would witness this horrid
act and this was done to make an
example of the person . This has made
me think about how people get
desensitized to horrible things that are
happening. Crowds would witness the
execution which means that children
might have as well which means that
they could have scarred them and this
might of desensitised them to death
which could hinder them in the future.
6. Sugar and slavery
What I found very informative about the sugar and slavery exhibition. How they
treated other human beings differently because they are from another county and are
a different ethnicity they treated them like they were objects that could be
transported to from one place to another. In Britain the royal family is respected and
looked up to highly. However in the mid-1700s William Ansah Sessarako the son of
an African ruler was sold into slavery in Barbados this shows that even people with
a higher status were not treated with respect. Wealthy people were at the heart of
trading people work in the plantations it was all about providing cheap labour for the
plantations. What I was thinking about when I saw this exhibition was how masses
upon masses of people were stripped of their human rights and were treated like
objects I would like to know what other people opinion are on what happened in the
early 1700s and I would like to ask if they have been victims of racism into society.
Also if they think that racism is prominent in London and if it is talked about or is it
hidden away. We know that London is a multi-cultural city but I would be interesting
to know if people are accepting as we think they are.
7. The docks and the Ports
The new dock St Katherine dock was made 1828 there was
going to be new constructions and this building of the docks
was going to be funded privately which means that business
people were going to take over. There were going to be
warehouses where they could keep the goods safe and high
security guards where hired to look after these important
goods. The opening of the new docks took away the profit and
goods away from the old quays which displeased many people.
The business people were trying different schemes to win back
the trade. The new London bridge was rebuilt on 1891. the
ports were in crisis because they were not happy with how
everything was changing and what was happening. I found this
very interesting because people were not happy that big
business people were trying to change the docks and the ports
and were rebuilding everywhere to there liking. Communities
were not happy with what was happening there. I would like to
talk to people about London and how it is changing every day
and how they feel about it. I want to ask if they think that
London is over crowded with building and there are less green
spaces I believe it would be interesting to get there opinion.
8. Ships, Docks
I thought that it was
interesting to find out about
how boats where the main
use of transportation and
getting to one place to
another. For example
transporting different typed
of cargo. The pirates in that
time caused a lot of trouble
for the docks and they stole
cargo from ships. Looking at
the different models of the
ships I could tell that there
must have been a lot of
people on the ship that had to
work the ship. The watermen
were not happy with the new
dock that was going to be
built and there planning
revenge against the people
that were doing this. Looking
at this section of the
exhibition I am not very
interested in it so I will not
do further research on it.
