Cornelius Vanderbilt Essay
The want for wealth saturates everyone's mind at one point or another. Almost everyone dreams of
having the large mansion near the beach, the multiple cars, etc., but this money does not just come,
it either has to be inherited or earned. During the 1800s, most wealth was inherited, but there were a
few self–made men that worked their way from the bottom to the top in order to become wealthy.
One man in particular influenced wealthy men to come like Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller. He
was able to begin many of the ideas brought about during the Gilded Age because not only was he a
major influence in society, but he greatly changed the economy and the industries he was involved
in during that time. Lastly, he modernized commerce for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Vanderbilt was the first businessman in America to try to monopolize other businesses by creating
lower prices. This enabled him to become wealthy because the lower his prices went the more
customers he gained. Once other companies found that they could also lower their prices, it added
more competition for Vanderbilt, so he had to begin to create trusts. During the Gold Rush in
California, many people went by sea to go from the East Coast to the West Coast. At the time
Vanderbilt had the lowest prices and he was putting many other steamboat companies out of
business; so "The Steamboat Association threw in the towel and bought him out. For $100,000 and
an annual payment of $5,000 for ten years, Vanderbilt agreed to withdraw from the Hudson River
market."2 By making other steamboat companies pay him rent to stay out of the industry, he was
still becoming extremely wealthy without having to do any work. Even though Vanderbilt was
extremely wealthy, he was very cautions with his money and only spent it when he knew something
was a strong investment that would get him more powerful. During the Gold Rush, the other
steamboat industries used the Panama Canal in order to get to

Nancy Drew : A Positive Feminist Role Model
Young girls have been reading Nancy Drew for eighty–seven years, she is a staple in most
households with elementary age girls. For me, Nancy represented everything I wanted to be at 18,
she was intelligent, fearless, beautiful, and she had a car. I never compared myself to Nancy, she was
what I aspired to be and what I expected to be when I grew up. She was one of the first feminist role
models I had as a child and I believe she was pivotal to my foundation as an independent, outspoken
woman. I see Nancy herself as a positive feminist role model, however, the series itself does not
portray women in a positive light, all the other female characters in the series besides Nancy are
problematic. One aspect about Nancy that I admired as a child was her independence, although she
was only 18 see had an extraordinary amount of freedom in my eyes. The fact that Nancy had her
own vehicle was instrumental for her ability to do what she wanted. "Why don't we drive out there
now in my car?" (The Ghost of Blackwood Hall, 7) Nancy was able to decide on the spot to leave
and go seek out clues. As a child, you do not have the opportunity and authority to go anywhere you
want; those decisions lie with your parents. Nancy does not need to rely on someone else to drive
her around nor does she require anyone's permission to leave, she decides for herself. "I'll pick up
my friends and drive out now to see if the crossed twigs are still there" (41). Even now, getting a car
is a huge step

Reflection Paper
After I graduated from high school, I decided to become a missionary, an experience I have drawn
as a portrait. "Portraying" is my way of reaching and describing people and moments who are
difficult to grasp. I'm currently stationed in the Mayan Zone of Cancun, Mexico, and I am aware of
the conditions that shape my experience. Before coming here, even though I had not perceived the
true details that composed this place, I held on to expectations of what it would be like; I knew I was
going to engage with Mayan communities; with the terminally ill and elderly; with children and
youth made vulnerable due to poverty and addictions; and with jailed women. Being raised in El
Salvador, a developing country, gave me a general idea of what my gap year would show me.
However, once I got here, I found myself looking for faces I could draw, and expressions that I
could feel. I was enthralled, and I could focus only on capturing the emotions that surrounded me.
I immersed myself in the community, I lived with families in straw–thatched and mud–brick homes,
learned bits of the Mayan language and culture and participated in different programs offered by the
foundation "La Ciudad de la Alegría." In some of these programs, I shared stories with the
community's elders and performed facial and physical therapies with HIV/AIDS affected persons.
These soon became the most enriching aspects of my missionary year.
Those adventures revealed to me the "eyes" of the mission. They instructed me to

Octavia Spencer : An Analysis
'"Dreams have as much influence as actions"'(Mallarme). Octavia Spencer's dream was to become
an actress, but in order to accomplish this she had to put forth time and effort. Octavia had her share
of obstacles, but she pushed through them to get to where she is today. She was not the wealthiest,
the smartest, or even the best looking. However, she had determination, with this she stood out
among the rest of the competition. Octavia is who she is today because of her family, her education
and her heart. Dellsena Spencer, a single mother of six waited patiently to welcome Octavia Spencer
into the world (Deloza, 2015). "Finally on May 25, 1972 Octavia was born in Montgomery,
Alabama"(Deloza, 2015, p.18).Octavia was not born into a wealthy family. Her mother worked as a
maid and had many other small jobs in order to support the family (Octavia Spencer, 2017) Despite
their financial problems Octavia still had the dream of attending college and becoming a leader for
others. In an interview by Keating and Mcniece Octavias said '"I had a very strong mom who made
me and my sisters understand that there were no limitations on our lives except what we placed on
ourselves"' (Keating & Mcniece, 2017, p.66). Octavias mother was a role model. She pushed her
children to become something more than a maid she taught them to push through the boundaries that
were blocking their road to success. Octavia loved to read in her free time as a child. Her mother

Communication Concepts in 50 First Dates
Throughout the first half of Communication 101: Introduction to Human Communication we have
been introduced to and discussed a lot of new concepts, ideas, and terms. All of this new material
has been pertinent to how humans interact with one another, while also informing us of the why and
how behind these interactions as well. The amount of new information we have learned would be
impossible to cover and apply to one piece of pop culture, but a lot of what we have learned is
relatable to the movie 50 First Dates. This 2004 movie featuring Adam Sandler and Drew
Barrymore features numerous examples of normative relationships and key concepts that we have
learned about in class. In this paper I will not only introduce communication terms ... Show more

Stereotyping can be defined as the unfair characterization of a person or group of people based off
of assumptions or appearance. Prejudice is just turning stereotypes into a feeling of hatred or
unkindness and is usually due to a feeling of superiority or for a feeling of protection. In conclusion,
all of the terms defined and described above play a role in the movie 50 First Dates and are essential
and crucial to the movie's plot.
Henry is the main character of 50 First Dates, and he is a middle aged man living in Hawaii. Henry
has previously had a bad relationship experience and this has left him hesitant in getting involved in
a relationship again. His mindset is one of avoiding relationships in favor of flings and one night
stands, and this perspective is promoted by the people close to him. However, one morning when
eating breakfast at the local diner he sees a beautiful girl that he hasn't noticed before eating
breakfast by herself. Lacking the confidence to approach her, Henry stares at her for a while before
finishing up his meal and heading to work. The next day however, he is eating at the same diner and
this beautiful girl is there again eating by herself. This time Henry has the nerve to approach her, and
ends up striking up good conversation. He learns her name is Lucy and they find common ground
talking about the fishy smell of Henry's hands. After finishing up their meal, which is filled with

Persuasive Essay On Racism In Sports
Racism is prevalent in today's society and is exposed in the sports industry as well. Various athletes
in different sports field experience racism and face it everyday. Social media is a big platform for
people to criticize athletes for their failures and success. On the other hand more times than not,
racism can be found within the head of organizations of major sports, most noticeably football. The
NFL has condoned an abundance of racist actions towards players of Hispanic and African
American descent; therefore, the NFL should stop these problems by supporting athletes that take a
stand, holding the NFL owners accountable for their actions, and finally, not stereotyping young
black athletes into a position based off of racial factors. An organization like the NFL needs to
support their athletes when they decide to exercise their 1st amendment rights. For example, a
current event that has ravished the mainstream media would be over the controversy with Colin
Kaepernick. There are 64 quarterbacks total in the NFL at the time, Kaepernick not being one of
them. At the end of the season Kaepernick had a passer rating of 90.7 "(ESPN, 2016)". That was
better than ten starting quarterbacks in the league at that time. Also, to add to his resume he only
threw four interceptions during the season. His stats prove that he's a proven NFL starter and his trip
to the Superbowl in 2013 are examples of why he should be added to any NFL roster. Why isn't he
on a roster? It's primarily

Designing A Product, An Advertiser
When trying to sell a product, an advertiser must think of their target audience. For Covergirl, their
audience is mainly women but it is for makeup enthusiast. Covergirl always tailors their
advertisements in the same way. There is always a woman, normally it is just her head and her
shoulders sometimes. She is posed very dramatically and she is always flawless with a clear
complexion, contoured skin, full pink lips, bright eyes and perfectly styled hair. There is always a
bold element or something that grabs your attention in a Covergirl advertisements. Most of them
also have a theme for example, the blossom mascara ad that features Katy Perry has a theme of

The text underneath the picture describes the product and how it is better than the competition. This
text talks about how the mascara is just as good if not better than false lashes. The colors used are
very contrasting. The background is very light and Drew Barrymore is portrayed as pale and the
only other color use is yellow. Black is used and is on her fishnet gloves and is very contrasting to
the smooth texture and colors.
In this ad specifically, there is a lot of contrasting images. The black fishnet gloves in contrast to the
smooth, glossy, silk fabric and the flawless face of Drew Barrymore. The dark color is only on the
black gloves draws attention to the gloves. However, your attention then moves to the next darkest
things, her eyes. They are effectively using the contrasting textures and colors to draw your attention
to her eyelashes. Another effective fact is that Covergirl uses Drew Barrymore as a model, her
familiar face plays on pathos and makes the audience trust the advertisement.

Drew Barrymore Research Paper
This semester my research topic was Drew Barrymore. I wanted to explore the assets of Drew
Barrymore's life and whether or not she is an example of resilience. I came across this topic over the
summer because my mom had read Little Girl Lost a while ago and was encouraging me to read the
book as well. I couldn't find the book over the summer, so I did some other research and found that
Drew's life really interested me. And with this research over the summer, I realized that Drew being
a relatively recent person means it might be hard to find sources; but I hoped that there would be
enough for me to research as I was very interested in learning more about Drew Barrymore's life.
Luckily enough, there were enough sources concerning Drew Barrymore,

The Men Who Built America Essay
Much credit was given to six men, for creating the foundation of America. The first 4 were
Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan. Through shipping
and trains, oil and its development, steel and construction, and corporate finance, these men
constructed the foundation of our country. Through their careers, these men saw much change
during prosperous times that effected business then and ultimately in the long run. Cornelius
Vanderbilt was an American industrialist and philanthropist. His claim to fame and fortune was
through shipping and railroads, becoming one of the richest men in American history. Vanderbilt

Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist who led the expansion of the steel industry in America. He
made his fortune in the steel industry, controlling the most iron and steel operations ever owned by
any individual in America. In the 1880's, his steel company was the largest manufacturer in the
world of pig iron, steel rails, and coke. The company had the capacity to produce about 2,000 tons
of pig metal per day. In 1892, he launched the Carnegie Steel Company which was combined of
Homestead Steel Works and a line of lake steamships which he bought in 1888. In all, by 1889,
Carnegie's empire consisted of Edgar Thomson Steel Works, The Lucy Furnaces, Pittsburgh
Bessemer Steel Works, the Union Iron Mills, the Keystone Bridge Works, the Union Mill, Hartman
Steel Works, the Frick Coke company and the Scotia ore mines. In 1901, Carnegie was 91 and
considering retirement. He made all the necessary preparations to his end and made negotiations
with J.P. Morgan to sell his company. March 2, 1901, the United States Steel Corporation was
formed and was the first corporation in the world with a market capitalization over $1 billion

exceed production, he would have to make some changes. In 1892, labor declared a

Covergirl
In 1961, Covergirl cosmetics launched nationally with their Clean Liquid Makeup, but in the late
90's, Covergirl Cosmetics launched the campaign which sloganed the words "Easy, Breezy, and
Beautiful." This campaign takes the star of today and shows that if the product is good enough for a
superstar to wear, than she can too. Aside from the "Beautiful" section of the campaign, the "Easy,
and Breezy" sections of the campaign are just as important. "Easy" Shows that you do not have to be
a professional makeup artist to make this product look its best and that it is easily accessible to
whomever may be seeking out the product. "Breezy" is shown by the star applying the product in
front of you, displaying how fast you should be able to put on the product, because if this busy star
has the time, than you do as well. This ongoing Covergirl Cosmetics campaign is used to inspire the
woman in her everyday life to be the best she can possibly be through confidence in looking her
best.
In 2010, Covergirl recruited Taylor swift for their campaign. This time representing their new
Natureluxe silk foundation. Again, Covergirl is using attractive, superstars to capture the eyes of
their audience– girl who want to look like the stars. Swift claims that without this product your face
will not be as clean or as light in comparison to all other products even though this is a tad

Summary Of Normopathy By Drew Barrymore
In her early years, Drew Barrymore struggled with Normopathy. Normopathy is described as "The
pursuit of conformity and societal acceptance at the expense of individuality" (Your Dictionary,
n.d.). Belonging to an industry of people who did anything they could to make people accept them
really had an effect on Barrymore's personality at the time. If all the celebrities were going out and
partying and doing drugs, she wanted to be part of that so she could be perceived as someone who
fit in with everyone else. Being an outsider in a world of famous people was not what Drew wanted
so being extroverted, open and agreeable was how she survived as a young actress and gained
acceptance from those around her. Humans have the tendency to act like

Analysis Of Educating Rita
Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director's Perspective
Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman's journey to change and find herself. The director keeps
the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The film is
considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita's character as
she really would be(dictionary.com).
Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an
alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both
have rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each
other(Maslin). Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita
makes new friends and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing
Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes
her test with distinction. Through this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the
same manor that they met(Maslin).
Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to
interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very
little mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. Another way a director
can get a viewer to feel a certain way or to focus on a particular conversation, is

Quarterback Analysis
Let me preface this editorial by saying that this is by far the longest position preview of this series.
Quarterback is by far the deepest position group in fantasy football, and you only draft one or two of
them, so hitting on a consistent producer who can deliver high point totals is crucial for your fantasy
title hopes. I would feel comfortable with starting, or having on my team, most of the quarterbacks
that inhabit the first four tiers below. That said, if I pass on the top guys, which is likely, I'll most
likely draft two QB's that I think can be good and platoon them until one emerges as the guy. This
could be a strategy you could use in most formats, unless your league's scoring favors quarterbacks
or you're in a two quarterback league. If you're in a standard league, I would recommend waiting to
select a quarterback until later in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They're widely ranked next to each other in various preseason quarterback rankings, and since some
idiot in your league picked Blake Bortles in front of them, you'll likely have the luxury of being one
of the later drafters to take a quarterback, meaning you can take one of them while also making the
rest of your roster title worthy. Whether they are up, down or tied, both Manning and Rivers have
coaching staffs that love to throw the ball – They throw all day everyday. Rivers has proven he can
perform at an elite level with a patchwork combination of weapons and a terrible offensive line. Last
year, with a terrible line, an infirmary at wide receiver and Danny Woodhead, Rivers balled out.
Manning plays the Eagles, Redskins and Cowboys twice, none of which are expected to be elite or
even average on defense, which is where I give him the edge over Rivers. Rivers twice has to go
against the top two fantasy defenses from last year, the Broncos and Chiefs, while also playing a
Raiders team that is expected to be in the top half of the league on that side of the

My Life Of My Mother
Literacy has always been close to my identity as a person. My mother wanted the best for her
children, and therefore would sing and read to us as soon as we were born. She encouraged out love
of words and books by taking us to the library for reading time and always seemed to find the most
amazing books for us to explore. My mother is very musically gifted, so songs were part of our daily
routine. There are still little songs that pop into my head about daily tasks that she created to help us
learn and make work and learning fun. When I grew a bit older, around the age of four, my mother
formed a group with other women in our neighborhood to form a preschool. They used the Joy
School curriculum and took turns having all of us over to their homes so that we could learn and
play together. I remember there was lots of music, reading many books, playing all sorts of games,
and a yearly Christmas program. Around this time, I began to learn about phonics and loved figuring
out which letters made which sounds. My mother tells me that I liked to rhyme a lot as a little child
because I found it fun. She said she thinks this is when my love of poetry started to develop. As I
transitioned into early elementary school, I was well prepared to enter Kindergarten. Because I have
always been pretty independent and self–driven, my mother did not really have to push me to read. I
started reading the summer before Kindergarten and knew most sight words and how to sound out

My Observation Experience At Cedar Rapids, Iowa
For my observation experience I went to my aunts house in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was a beautiful,
bright Sunday afternoon on the 23rd of October, 2016. It was late afternoon when I arrived, around
3pm. I was welcomed by my aunt with a big hug and she called for her son Goose, my cousin, who
was helping me with my assignment. I asked where he would be most comfortable and he said "I
work best on the couch" so we went into the living room. I sat on the couch to the right of him and
he laid on his belly on the couch next to me. His mom sat in as well in a chair across from Goose. It
was very bright because of the large window so Goose asked to switch me couches so he could see
better. I happily obliged. I explained how he was going to help me with my homework and he didn 't
seem too interested, until I handed him my large sketch pad. His face lit up and he told his mom "I

The Role Of Prince Henry In The Movie Ever After
The Prince figure in all of the fairy tales has to deal with an enormous amount of pressure and
expectations throughout his life as an upcoming leader . Prince Henry's father, who is the king,
expects a great deal from him and creates the vast majority of the pressure the young prince is under.
These stressors have had a large impact on him and as a result the prince behaves in such a way as to
show rebellion from his father and his responsibilities to his kingdom. There are many instances
throughout the film that Prince Henry goes against his expectations, which is very difficult when his
whole life he has been taught he has certain duties to uphold. However it is obvious that this had a
huge effect on him and his young life. Although the life of a prince seems to be easy and carefree on
the outside, Henry is hesitant to take on the role as king due to the expectations and pressure that
have been put on him throughout his life by his father and the rest of the kingdom. In the film Ever

Review Of ' Shiloh ' By Toni Morrison
The protagonists are the most important characters of the stories. They play an essential part in
building the story to its climax. The protagonists encounter with different characters and their
experiences with those characters became paramount in developing the outcome of the story at the
end. Sometimes we overlook the significance of non–protagonists. Many non–protagonist characters
have a significant impact on the protagonists. In "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, Norma
Jean and Leroy are unhappily married couple who are going through a transformation in their
marriage. Leroy is failing to keep Norma Jean satisfied with their marriage and eventually faces a
cruel reality which will alter his life. Also in "Recitatif" written by Toni Morrison, Twyla who
briefly stayed at St. Bonny's orphanage, met Maggie and Roberta, who would later become
indispensable individuals that would forever change her point of view on life.
In the story of "Shiloh," Leroy and Norma Jean have been in an unhappy marriage for sixteen years.
Even though their marriage was an unhappy one, it seems to be normal, from Leroy's point of view,
until he gets into an accident. According to Steward J. Cooke, he later comes to terms with the cruel
reality of his shallow/empty marriage with Norma Jean (Cooke). Even though he knows about the
abnormality in his marriage with Norma Jean, he is still stuck in the past and hoping that he could
renew their marriage and start afresh. All the while Norma Jean is

Analysis Of The Falling Man By Tom Junod
The Falling Man
On the date of September 11th 2001, a horrific terrorist attack took place on the World Trade center.
From this one act of evil caused thousands of individuals to perish in the matter of minutes. As time
progresses on, the things that still remain are the memories and the footage of what occurred on that
day. As the two buildings were in engulfed in flames and people stood helpless on the ground, some
witnesses turned to photography and video footage to hopefully help this day to never be forgotten.
One individual named Richard Drew, a professional journalist and photographer was in New York

Analysis of the Photography of The Fallen Man Essay
We've all heard the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words." It's the mere fact that an idea can
be conveyed with just one single image. We come across tons of unfiltered images everyday,
whether we see them in newspapers or magazines. These images move us, they have an impact on
some of us, deep to our core. When a photograph directly impacts an individual, one will recount an
image long after they have seen it. The photograph that is forever imprinted in my mind is the image
"The Falling Man," from The New York Times, a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11,
2001. It is a photo and article that was in the very first pages of The New York Times, days after the
terrorist attacks. That was the first time I had seen the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather he looks serene and relaxed. His shoes are still on, while others whom jumped out the
windows flailing, lost both their shoes. The man is falling so gracefully he almost looks like he is
flying. All you can see in the portrait behind him, is the Twin Tower seconds from burning down and
completely collapsing. When analyzing this photograph it seems like the falling man has accepted
his fate. One can look at this photo ten years or even hundred years from now, and still encapsulate
the horror, and pain, that American people endured on September 11, 2011. As much as I want to
wipe this image from my memory, I think it will always haunt me. Part of the reason it haunts me is
because it brings me back to the phone called I received that day from my best friend. She told me
her father had left for work in the World Trade Center that morning, and hadn't come home or called
to tell them he was alive. My best friend's father lost his life that day along with the falling man. The
flashback is clearer in my mind than ever. "The Falling Man" represents all the innocent people who
lost their lives that day. Viewers who see this photo are able to sympathize with the falling man who
bravely faced his inevitable death. The photo of "The Falling Man" ties into the photojournalism
lecture where we viewed an image displayed on the National Geographic Magazine. The cover

Donnie Darko vs. Oedipus Rex Essay
Greek tragedies were often seen as the foundation to literature not only for the Greeks but also on a
universal scale as well. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex was one of the more infamous tales because of its
provocative and unorthodox nature. The tragedy features a man on a quest to prevent the events of
his prophesized life from coming to fruition. The key components of fate, destiny and time can be
paralleled to the cult classic film Donnie Darko. In the movie, Donnie suffers from predictions of
the future in his own variation of time travel, as a repercussion he has been "chosen" to rectify the
past in order to preserve what is to come.
Between the two pieces of text, destiny and fate greatly affect the outcome for both of the ... Show

Donnie has to suffer the knowledge that his death would be the only way to prevent the cataclysmic
incidents like that of Ashton Kutcher's character Evan Treborn in The Butterfly Effect. He too
understood his role in life was apocalyptic as soon as he was conceived. When Donnie ran into
Grandma Death she whispered to him that "All things die alone," ("Donnie Darko") it can be seen
just how tragic and miserable his life was going to be. After assessing the whole film, it can be
realized that she was right because Donnie inevitably died by himself without ever having met
Gretchen and without resolving his fight with his mother. Another event can be one of the first
encounters with Frank in which ended with "28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds" ("Donnie
Darko") being etched into his arm. He had his very own expiration date and "end of the world"
timeframe given to him. The very thought of knowing one's own time of death is absolutely
frightening and panic inducing. One of the deleted scenes off of the DVD provided more insight into
Donnie's mind and his acceptance of death: A storm is coming, Frank says.
A storm that will swallow the children, and I will deliver them from the kingdom of pain.
I will deliver the children back to their doorsteps;
I'll send the monsters back to the underground.
I'll send them back to a place where no one else can see them, except for me because I am Donnie

I found this post to be another one of my best post because the topic is something I learned a lot

talking about female empowerment and what films are teaching young girls in todays society. As the
young people are the future and it is important that we teach them to love there self and that
everyone is equal. Just like any one in my group I made a difference in the discussion because I

Analysis Of The Secret Of The Old Clock, By Carolyn Keeane
My entire childhood was surrounded with books. Weekly trips to the library were exciting
adventures, and books could always be expected as gifts during birthdays and holidays. My personal
collection continued to expand as I grew older, but it was nothing compared to the massive amount
of books that my parents had collected over the years; construction manuals, coffee table books,
novels, and reference books littered almost every room of the house. Among the numerous volumes
that consisted of my home library were fascinating books from my mom's childhood, books with
yellowing pages and weak spines that I couldn't wait until I was old enough to finally read.
Inhabiting a bookshelf in the basement, these books were full promise to me. The prospect of unread

The relationships between the characters was a new phenomenon that I had never been exposed to
before. The fact that Nancy was acquainted to so many seemingly insignificant people introduced
me to different types of interactions between characters, and eventually caused me to read closer as I
realized that everyone that she met was a possible suspect. Also, The Secret of the Old Clock
exposed me to a descriptive writing style that I had never experienced before. Adjectives such as
animated and chic and verbs such as murmured and mused were completely new to me and allowed
for me visual what was occurring in the book in ways previously unknown to me. The Secret of the
Old Clock, written by Carolyn Keene was the most influential book of my life. It introduced to me
new literary concepts, including vivid descriptions and intricate and complicated relationships that
allowed for me to grow as a reader. Additionally, it provided me with a positive role model in the

The Evolution Of Female Identity
The Evolution of Female Identity
Characterization through stereotyping female identity creates weak characters bound by gender
expectations. The evolution of dimensional working–girl protagonists develops an unconventional
female identity, which breaks the common tropes of a woman's role in literature and society.
Independent female archetypes often adopt masculine qualities to achieve status, earnest acceptance
and independence in a man's world. The heroine, Nancy Drew, promotes the corrosion of traditional
female identity, inheriting male–identified traits to express success and strength. In the first chapter
of Carolyn Keene's mystery novel, The Message in the Hollow Oak, the archetype of a strong
female character equates success from transcending into male–identified personality, reverting from
tradition femininity and adopting male qualifies to express strong independent characteristics.
Through the narrative exposition and indirect integration of character development through dialogue
and inner monologue, female characters within the novel display strength by identifying with
masculine strength. Female identity is contrasted through the characterization of George and Bess,
identifying two representations of femininity as one that conforms to the norms of gender within
society, and one who equates boyish physical appearance with strength and success.
In the novel, character development is displayed through narrative exposition and dialogue. Female

Groaning, Gawain opened one eye a crack and got his bearings. He was not, in fact, dying, and it

his mouth, either, though it tasted like head feasted on a hundred rotting rodents.

A Single Under Cabinet Light
A single under–cabinet light in the kitchen provided all of the light in this part of the house. It was a
small but orderly place – the area around the front door was lower and still slightly damp from when
she had come in. It entered directly into a modest carpeted living area, with carpet and couches on
the right, and a kind of lounge on the left, separated from the kitchen further back by a counter. A
path in the middle lead further towards a narrow hallway, with doors on the left and right, the latter
of which was to the room she had used. There was nothing on the walls besides heavy blue curtains
which hung almost floor to ceiling. The chair she currently occupied was soft, clearly not new but

There was something else in another room, the one at the end of the hall.
It was regular – consistent, like a sphere. Soft all the way through. She shuffled further back into the
chair and concentrated. It was consistent on the outside, but inside it was something else, some kind
of element or maze of elements. It was inaccessible, visible only through faint densities rolling
outward from the center, there was some kind of insulation around it. Inside, it was complex, the
heat was moving through the elements in strange paths. It was not arbitrary, there was a pattern – or
patterns – quick, rapid, then pulsed, then broken up, representations of something else. Inside, the
further in she went, the hotter it was, much too hot, it seemed to twist. She tugged at the heat, but it
remained stubborn; the boundaries of its pattern made more clear by her attempts to influence it. It
held at fixtures, remained constant within tolerances. She tugged again, suppressing one of the
strange elements, and the heat reacted, redirected – but the redirection was physical, mechanical, it
was a physical readjustment, not mechanical one. She drew back, and the element returned to its
prior state.
The heat did not flow down, the floor beneath the source was almost as cool as the rest of the house.

The Comic Stumptown By Greg Rucka And Matthew Southworth...
The comic Stumptown by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth and the retro audio podcast Nick
Carter: Master Detective starring Lon Clack portray the different roles of women in detective
fiction. Nick Carter was on the radio from 1943 to 1955, and represents more traditional roles for
gender. Over the 125 episodes, the radio show followed detective Nick Carter and his female
assistant, Patsy on different crime scene investigations. Carter was also able to solve seemingly
impossible crimes by looking at unique angles. Stumptown was published in 2011. It represents a
more modern view on gender roles in detecting. In this comic, Dex Parios, a private investigator, is
hired to find someone's granddaughter. She encounters many difficulties while investigating and
attempting to find the missing girl. In the end, the plot ends up being a lot more complicated than
initially presented. In this essay, I am going to look at how the role of gender in detective fiction has
evolved over time.
Although Nick Carter had both books and a movie about him, the most well– known installment of
his story was the radio show. Nick Carter: Master Detective was produced in the 1940s and 50s,
which means it reflects a traditional view of gender roles in detecting, as well as in the world, that
was common of this time period. The patriarchal society dictates that men are the providers for the
family and have the jobs and do the hard work. Women are to stay in the home and not do any heavy

The Four Brothers Research Paper
On the eve of the Renaissance, there were four brothers of wealthy pedigree. Their sundry stories
were as tightly knit as a twilled textile, always aloof with vigor and fraternity, in the small Welsh
hamlet of Cartref. The eldest, named Robert, was the beneficiary of the family estate, a sprawling
sheep farm. He spent his days crutching and herding the livelihood of the brother's elderly parents.
The Second brother, named Frederick, apprenticed a blacksmith, and learned the craft of coercing
iron and steel into tools of production as well as destruction. And the youngest two brothers,
William and Harrison, earned a King's Shilling, bringing home honor, for King and for Country.

The Tangent Mind In Donnie Darko
"The basic dilemma of all human existence is that each element of the psychic apparatus makes
demands upon us that are incompatible with the other two. Inner conflict is inevitable". Richard
Kelly's careful utilization of the tangent universe in Donnie Darko, as well and the characters within
it, are reflective of Freuds aspects of the human psyche, and the unconsciousness mind. Freud's
structure of the mind is composed of the id, ego, and superego and each are represented by one the
main characters in the film. At the conscious level of the human psyche emotional, physical, and
spiritual awareness is fully realized. While at the unconscious level, these aspects still influence and
drive the individual, yet the individual is unaware of their presence. In the beginning of the film,
Donnie is the black sheep of his family, a lonely outcast with no defined purpose in life. As the film
progresses Donnie's level of consciousness cultivates parallel to development of the movie's plot, as
he fulfills his destiny as the living receiver.
According to Freud's ideology the id engages in foolish, illogical, and unrealistic thought processes,
and is disconnected from reality due to its unconscious location (Freud 17–19). Kitty Farmer the
conservative gym coach at Middlesex would represent the id. Kitty is infatuated with Jim
Cunningham a motivational author in the film, whose teachings she bases most of her classes on.

Reflection Essay
Many people experience exclusion in their lives; yet, when they feel included, they experience the
process of healing. In the memoir Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Power of Adversity, Dw
Brees' journey to healing is explored. This experience of exclusion to inclusion is also discussed in
Becoming Human by Jean Vanier. The New Orleans Saints accepted Drew, a severely injured
quarterback at the time, just as Jean Vanier accepted people with intellectual disabilities into
L'Arche. Withal, Drew is given the opportunity to motivate and inspire his team, and those people
included in the L'Arche community are given the opportunity to develop new, meaningful
relationships. For Drew, having this opportunity results in a milestone for the whole team that
represents hope for New Orleans, while the people with intellectual disabilities being able to be in
an inclusive community result in the maturity of the heart. Both works suggest that being inclusive
towards other people, especially those excluded in society, by welcoming them into a particular
community result in a person's internal and external healing.
The New Orleans Saints accepted the severely injured quarterback as Jean Vanier accepted people
with intellectual disabilities into L'Arche. The philosopher shares his story about one of the people
he welcomed into the community. "Antonio came to our community in Trosly when he was twenty
years old, after many years in hospital. He could not walk, speak, or use his hands; he needed extra
oxygen to breathe. He was a weak and fragile man in many ways but he had an incredible smile and
beautiful shining eyes"(Vanier 91). Antonio was very weak, fragile and needy but Vanier noticed
that despite his weaknesses, he is a man full of joy. When Antonio joins the community, the
members realized that life is more than a competition to become successful financially,
academically, etc. According to Vanier, acceptance is the first step of healing. As the chapter implies,
going from exclusion to inclusion in the path of healing. Once Antonio is accepted into L'Arche,
healing occurs when the members felt different after Antonio joined the community, since their
competitive mindset transformed into a more tender and loving one.

Essay on Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko In recent years, Hollywood has specialised in churning out mainstream trash; generic
fodder not even fit for the cutting room floor. Yet despite these movies' shortcomings, they continue
to enjoy success at the box office. Sequel upon sequel, photo fit remake upon photo fit remake,
frequently taking the box office by storm whilst simultaneously relegating smaller independent
projects to the now relatively unheard–of arthouse cinemas. The tragedy is that the independent
filmmakers are often those with the most talent; the most creativity; the most flair. One such
filmmaker is director Richard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, each frame speaks to us on more profound terms than the majority of arthouse films would
claim to do. This is, in part, due to the impeccable performances by each and every member of the
cast. Jake Gyllenhaal, a relative unknown, delivers a subtle yet emotionally charged performance as
Donnie himself – the scene in which he tells his psychologist of his various childhood traumas is
made both funny and moving by the haunting way in which Jake delivers each line, contrasted with
the almost childish qualities of his movements on the couch. Most incredible of all, however, is his
terrifying screen presence as he trudges slowly through a deserted corridor or along a dark street,
head tilted slightly forward, face fixed in a confused, bewildered expression. Drew Barrymore is
also superb as the liberal high school teacher rejected and scorned in a Conservative education
system, while Patrick Swayze is excellent in his extended cameo, a smartly observed satire of a self–
help guru with a few skeletons in the closet.
Where the movie comes into its own, however, is in its ability to incorporate and deal with a variety
of genres. Every movie genre seems to make an appearance, so much so that to categorise the movie
as simply a "psychological horror" or a "supernatural thriller" would be an unforgivable insult. Even

In order for any argument to be dependable, research must take place. Analysis, assessment, and
eventually, judgements occur. This however, does not happen until thorough evaluation of reliable

Cornelius Vanderbilt Essay

  • 1. Cornelius Vanderbilt Essay The want for wealth saturates everyone's mind at one point or another. Almost everyone dreams of having the large mansion near the beach, the multiple cars, etc., but this money does not just come, it either has to be inherited or earned. During the 1800s, most wealth was inherited, but there were a few self–made men that worked their way from the bottom to the top in order to become wealthy. One man in particular influenced wealthy men to come like Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller. He was able to begin many of the ideas brought about during the Gilded Age because not only was he a major influence in society, but he greatly changed the economy and the industries he was involved in during that time. Lastly, he modernized commerce for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vanderbilt was the first businessman in America to try to monopolize other businesses by creating lower prices. This enabled him to become wealthy because the lower his prices went the more customers he gained. Once other companies found that they could also lower their prices, it added more competition for Vanderbilt, so he had to begin to create trusts. During the Gold Rush in California, many people went by sea to go from the East Coast to the West Coast. At the time Vanderbilt had the lowest prices and he was putting many other steamboat companies out of business; so "The Steamboat Association threw in the towel and bought him out. For $100,000 and an annual payment of $5,000 for ten years, Vanderbilt agreed to withdraw from the Hudson River market."2 By making other steamboat companies pay him rent to stay out of the industry, he was still becoming extremely wealthy without having to do any work. Even though Vanderbilt was extremely wealthy, he was very cautions with his money and only spent it when he knew something was a strong investment that would get him more powerful. During the Gold Rush, the other steamboat industries used the Panama Canal in order to get to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Nancy Drew : A Positive Feminist Role Model Young girls have been reading Nancy Drew for eighty–seven years, she is a staple in most households with elementary age girls. For me, Nancy represented everything I wanted to be at 18, she was intelligent, fearless, beautiful, and she had a car. I never compared myself to Nancy, she was what I aspired to be and what I expected to be when I grew up. She was one of the first feminist role models I had as a child and I believe she was pivotal to my foundation as an independent, outspoken woman. I see Nancy herself as a positive feminist role model, however, the series itself does not portray women in a positive light, all the other female characters in the series besides Nancy are problematic. One aspect about Nancy that I admired as a child was her independence, although she was only 18 see had an extraordinary amount of freedom in my eyes. The fact that Nancy had her own vehicle was instrumental for her ability to do what she wanted. "Why don't we drive out there now in my car?" (The Ghost of Blackwood Hall, 7) Nancy was able to decide on the spot to leave and go seek out clues. As a child, you do not have the opportunity and authority to go anywhere you want; those decisions lie with your parents. Nancy does not need to rely on someone else to drive her around nor does she require anyone's permission to leave, she decides for herself. "I'll pick up my friends and drive out now to see if the crossed twigs are still there" (41). Even now, getting a car is a huge step ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Reflection Paper After I graduated from high school, I decided to become a missionary, an experience I have drawn as a portrait. "Portraying" is my way of reaching and describing people and moments who are difficult to grasp. I'm currently stationed in the Mayan Zone of Cancun, Mexico, and I am aware of the conditions that shape my experience. Before coming here, even though I had not perceived the true details that composed this place, I held on to expectations of what it would be like; I knew I was going to engage with Mayan communities; with the terminally ill and elderly; with children and youth made vulnerable due to poverty and addictions; and with jailed women. Being raised in El Salvador, a developing country, gave me a general idea of what my gap year would show me. However, once I got here, I found myself looking for faces I could draw, and expressions that I could feel. I was enthralled, and I could focus only on capturing the emotions that surrounded me. I immersed myself in the community, I lived with families in straw–thatched and mud–brick homes, learned bits of the Mayan language and culture and participated in different programs offered by the foundation "La Ciudad de la Alegría." In some of these programs, I shared stories with the community's elders and performed facial and physical therapies with HIV/AIDS affected persons. These soon became the most enriching aspects of my missionary year. Those adventures revealed to me the "eyes" of the mission. They instructed me to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Octavia Spencer : An Analysis '"Dreams have as much influence as actions"'(Mallarme). Octavia Spencer's dream was to become an actress, but in order to accomplish this she had to put forth time and effort. Octavia had her share of obstacles, but she pushed through them to get to where she is today. She was not the wealthiest, the smartest, or even the best looking. However, she had determination, with this she stood out among the rest of the competition. Octavia is who she is today because of her family, her education and her heart. Dellsena Spencer, a single mother of six waited patiently to welcome Octavia Spencer into the world (Deloza, 2015). "Finally on May 25, 1972 Octavia was born in Montgomery, Alabama"(Deloza, 2015, p.18).Octavia was not born into a wealthy family. Her mother worked as a maid and had many other small jobs in order to support the family (Octavia Spencer, 2017) Despite their financial problems Octavia still had the dream of attending college and becoming a leader for others. In an interview by Keating and Mcniece Octavias said '"I had a very strong mom who made me and my sisters understand that there were no limitations on our lives except what we placed on ourselves"' (Keating & Mcniece, 2017, p.66). Octavias mother was a role model. She pushed her children to become something more than a maid she taught them to push through the boundaries that were blocking their road to success. • 9. Communication Concepts in 50 First Dates Throughout the first half of Communication 101: Introduction to Human Communication we have been introduced to and discussed a lot of new concepts, ideas, and terms. All of this new material has been pertinent to how humans interact with one another, while also informing us of the why and how behind these interactions as well. The amount of new information we have learned would be impossible to cover and apply to one piece of pop culture, but a lot of what we have learned is relatable to the movie 50 First Dates. This 2004 movie featuring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore features numerous examples of normative relationships and key concepts that we have learned about in class. In this paper I will not only introduce communication terms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stereotyping can be defined as the unfair characterization of a person or group of people based off of assumptions or appearance. Prejudice is just turning stereotypes into a feeling of hatred or unkindness and is usually due to a feeling of superiority or for a feeling of protection. In conclusion, all of the terms defined and described above play a role in the movie 50 First Dates and are essential and crucial to the movie's plot. Henry is the main character of 50 First Dates, and he is a middle aged man living in Hawaii. Henry has previously had a bad relationship experience and this has left him hesitant in getting involved in a relationship again. His mindset is one of avoiding relationships in favor of flings and one night stands, and this perspective is promoted by the people close to him. However, one morning when eating breakfast at the local diner he sees a beautiful girl that he hasn't noticed before eating breakfast by herself. Lacking the confidence to approach her, Henry stares at her for a while before finishing up his meal and heading to work. The next day however, he is eating at the same diner and this beautiful girl is there again eating by herself. This time Henry has the nerve to approach her, and ends up striking up good conversation. He learns her name is Lucy and they find common ground talking about the fishy smell of Henry's hands. • 11. Persuasive Essay On Racism In Sports Racism is prevalent in today's society and is exposed in the sports industry as well. Various athletes in different sports field experience racism and face it everyday. Social media is a big platform for people to criticize athletes for their failures and success. On the other hand more times than not, racism can be found within the head of organizations of major sports, most noticeably football. The NFL has condoned an abundance of racist actions towards players of Hispanic and African American descent; therefore, the NFL should stop these problems by supporting athletes that take a stand, holding the NFL owners accountable for their actions, and finally, not stereotyping young black athletes into a position based off of racial factors. An organization like the NFL needs to support their athletes when they decide to exercise their 1st amendment rights. For example, a current event that has ravished the mainstream media would be over the controversy with Colin Kaepernick. There are 64 quarterbacks total in the NFL at the time, Kaepernick not being one of them. At the end of the season Kaepernick had a passer rating of 90.7 "(ESPN, 2016)". That was better than ten starting quarterbacks in the league at that time. Also, to add to his resume he only threw four interceptions during the season. His stats prove that he's a proven NFL starter and his trip to the Superbowl in 2013 are examples of why he should be added to any NFL roster. Why isn't he on a roster? It's primarily ... For Covergirl, their audience is mainly women but it is for makeup enthusiast. Covergirl always tailors their advertisements in the same way. There is always a woman, normally it is just her head and her shoulders sometimes. She is posed very dramatically and she is always flawless with a clear complexion, contoured skin, full pink lips, bright eyes and perfectly styled hair. Black is used and is on her fishnet gloves and is very contrasting to the smooth texture and colors. In this ad specifically, there is a lot of contrasting images. However, your attention then moves to the next darkest things, her eyes. They are effectively using the contrasting textures and colors to draw your attention to her eyelashes. Another effective fact is that Covergirl uses Drew Barrymore as a model, her familiar face plays on pathos and makes the audience trust the advertisement. This image is a Covergirl ad advertising nylon mascara, using Drew Barrymore as a spokesperson for this product. This ad appeared in a magazine and a similar one aired on television. I came across this topic over the summer because my mom had read Little Girl Lost a while ago and was encouraging me to read the book as well. I couldn't find the book over the summer, so I did some other research and found that Drew's life really interested me. And with this research over the summer, I realized that Drew being a relatively recent person means it might be hard to find sources; but I hoped that there would be enough for me to research as I was very interested in learning more about Drew Barrymore's life. Covergirl Cosmetics Campaign : An Overview Essay Jade Gifford Nelson Comp I 2 October 2015 Covergirl In 1961, Covergirl cosmetics launched nationally with their Clean Liquid Makeup, but in the late 90's, Covergirl Cosmetics launched the campaign which sloganed the words "Easy, Breezy, and Beautiful." This campaign takes the star of today and shows that if the product is good enough for a superstar to wear, than she can too. Aside from the "Beautiful" section of the campaign, the "Easy, and Breezy" sections of the campaign are just as important. "Easy" Shows that you do not have to be a professional makeup artist to make this product look its best and that it is easily accessible to whomever may be seeking out the product. "Breezy" is shown by the star applying the product in front of you, displaying how fast you should be able to put on the product, because if this busy star has the time, than you do as well. This ongoing Covergirl Cosmetics campaign is used to inspire the woman in her everyday life to be the best she can possibly be through confidence in looking her best. Normopathy is described as "The pursuit of conformity and societal acceptance at the expense of individuality" (Your Dictionary, n.d.). Belonging to an industry of people who did anything they could to make people accept them really had an effect on Barrymore's personality at the time. If all the celebrities were going out and partying and doing drugs, she wanted to be part of that so she could be perceived as someone who fit in with everyone else. • 25. Analysis Of Educating Rita Educating Rita: A Realistic Film From the Director's Perspective Educating Rita is a realistic look at a woman's journey to change and find herself. The director keeps the film simple while watching her overcome a lack of confidence and other obstacles. The film is considered a comedy but is still a relatable story because the director represented Rita's character as she really would be(dictionary.com). Rita, real name Susan, is a young married hairdresser that wants to get an education. Frank is an alcoholic literature teacher who is assigned to help her through the program she enrolled in. Both have rocky relationships and the audience could easily assume they end up falling for each other(Maslin). Rita has a thirst for knowledge but little understanding of what she is quoting. Rita makes new friends and tries new things. She even marvels at how much she liked seeing Macbeth(Maslin). By the end of the movie she gains an understanding of her education and passes her test with distinction. Through this series of events both characters end up single, yet part in the same manor that they met(Maslin). Lewis Gilbert, the director of the film, had the responsibility of using all the elements of film to interpret the writers ideas(dictionary.com). In Educationg Rita he uses realistic lighting and very little mood music to indicate how the viewer should feel during the scene. • 27. Quarterback Analysis Let me preface this editorial by saying that this is by far the longest position preview of this series. Quarterback is by far the deepest position group in fantasy football, and you only draft one or two of them, so hitting on a consistent producer who can deliver high point totals is crucial for your fantasy title hopes. I would feel comfortable with starting, or having on my team, most of the quarterbacks that inhabit the first four tiers below. That said, if I pass on the top guys, which is likely, I'll most likely draft two QB's that I think can be good and platoon them until one emerges as the guy. This could be a strategy you could use in most formats, unless your league's scoring favors quarterbacks or you're in a two quarterback league. If you're in a standard league, I would recommend waiting to select a quarterback until later in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They're widely ranked next to each other in various preseason quarterback rankings, and since some idiot in your league picked Blake Bortles in front of them, you'll likely have the luxury of being one of the later drafters to take a quarterback, meaning you can take one of them while also making the rest of your roster title worthy. Whether they are up, down or tied, both Manning and Rivers have coaching staffs that love to throw the ball – They throw all day everyday. Rivers has proven he can perform at an elite level with a patchwork combination of weapons and a terrible offensive line. Last year, with a terrible line, an infirmary at wide receiver and Danny Woodhead, Rivers balled out. Manning plays the Eagles, Redskins and Cowboys twice, none of which are expected to be elite or even average on defense, which is where I give him the edge over Rivers. Rivers twice has to go against the top two fantasy defenses from last year, the Broncos and Chiefs, while also playing a Raiders team that is expected to be in the top half of the league on that side of the ... She encouraged out love of words and books by taking us to the library for reading time and always seemed to find the most amazing books for us to explore. My mother is very musically gifted, so songs were part of our daily routine. There are still little songs that pop into my head about daily tasks that she created to help us learn and make work and learning fun. When I grew a bit older, around the age of four, my mother formed a group with other women in our neighborhood to form a preschool. They used the Joy School curriculum and took turns having all of us over to their homes so that we could learn and play together. I remember there was lots of music, reading many books, playing all sorts of games, and a yearly Christmas program. Around this time, I began to learn about phonics and loved figuring out which letters made which sounds. My mother tells me that I liked to rhyme a lot as a little child because I found it fun. She said she thinks this is when my love of poetry started to develop. As I transitioned into early elementary school, I was well prepared to enter Kindergarten. Because I have always been pretty independent and self–driven, my mother did not really have to push me to read. I started reading the summer before Kindergarten and knew most sight words and how to sound out words ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. My Observation Experience At Cedar Rapids, Iowa For my observation experience I went to my aunts house in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was a beautiful, bright Sunday afternoon on the 23rd of October, 2016. It was late afternoon when I arrived, around 3pm. I was welcomed by my aunt with a big hug and she called for her son Goose, my cousin, who was helping me with my assignment. I asked where he would be most comfortable and he said "I work best on the couch" so we went into the living room. I sat on the couch to the right of him and he laid on his belly on the couch next to me. His mom sat in as well in a chair across from Goose. • 37. Review Of ' Shiloh ' By Toni Morrison The protagonists are the most important characters of the stories. They play an essential part in building the story to its climax. The protagonists encounter with different characters and their experiences with those characters became paramount in developing the outcome of the story at the end. Sometimes we overlook the significance of non–protagonists. Many non–protagonist characters have a significant impact on the protagonists. In "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, Norma Jean and Leroy are unhappily married couple who are going through a transformation in their marriage. Leroy is failing to keep Norma Jean satisfied with their marriage and eventually faces a cruel reality which will alter his life. Also in "Recitatif" written by Toni Morrison, Twyla who briefly stayed at St. Bonny's orphanage, met Maggie and Roberta, who would later become indispensable individuals that would forever change her point of view on life. In the story of "Shiloh," Leroy and Norma Jean have been in an unhappy marriage for sixteen years. Even though their marriage was an unhappy one, it seems to be normal, from Leroy's point of view, until he gets into an accident. According to Steward J. I walked over to another game, stuck my card in, but it did the same thing. In fact every game I tried did that exact same thing. I walked over to my dad and told him what as going on. Turned out that you had to either use tickets to play the games we were playing or buy a special (more expensive) card in order to play the games I was trying to play. The reason why all the games I tried to play didn't work is because those were the games that gave off prizes, the games I wanted to play. (Ha ha very funny.) From this one act of evil caused thousands of individuals to perish in the matter of minutes. As time progresses on, the things that still remain are the memories and the footage of what occurred on that day. One individual named Richard Drew, a professional journalist and photographer was in New York on 9/11. While the terrorist attack occurred he sat helpless and watched from the streets but decided to begin snapping pictures. However, the article entitled, "The Falling Man" by Tom Junod showed the controversy of what he was taking pictures of. Richard was taking pictures of the "Jumpers" (Junod, 2016, para. 6). The Jumpers were the citizens trapped within the twin towers with no other exit but to jump for possible freedom, but as they fell hundreds of stories from the buildings the people on the streets knew their was no help for them and the only thing that awaited them was a quick death. These images move us, they have an impact on some of us, deep to our core. When a photograph directly impacts an individual, one will recount an image long after they have seen it. The photograph that is forever imprinted in my mind is the image "The Falling Man," from The New York Times, a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. • 47. Donnie Darko vs. Oedipus Rex Essay Greek tragedies were often seen as the foundation to literature not only for the Greeks but also on a universal scale as well. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex was one of the more infamous tales because of its provocative and unorthodox nature. The tragedy features a man on a quest to prevent the events of his prophesized life from coming to fruition. The key components of fate, destiny and time can be paralleled to the cult classic film Donnie Darko. In the movie, Donnie suffers from predictions of the future in his own variation of time travel, as a repercussion he has been "chosen" to rectify the past in order to preserve what is to come. Donnie has to suffer the knowledge that his death would be the only way to prevent the cataclysmic incidents like that of Ashton Kutcher's character Evan Treborn in The Butterfly Effect. He too understood his role in life was apocalyptic as soon as he was conceived. When Donnie ran into Grandma Death she whispered to him that "All things die alone," ("Donnie Darko") it can be seen just how tragic and miserable his life was going to be. After assessing the whole film, it can be realized that she was right because Donnie inevitably died by himself without ever having met Gretchen and without resolving his fight with his mother. Another event can be one of the first encounters with Frank in which ended with "28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds" ("Donnie Darko") being etched into his arm. He had his very own expiration date and "end of the world" timeframe given to him. The very thought of knowing one's own time of death is absolutely frightening and panic inducing. One of the deleted scenes off of the DVD provided more insight into Donnie's mind and his acceptance of death: A storm is coming, Frank says. A storm that will swallow the children, and I will deliver them from the kingdom of pain. I will deliver the children back to their doorsteps; I'll send the monsters back to the underground. • 55. The Evolution Of Female Identity The Evolution of Female Identity Characterization through stereotyping female identity creates weak characters bound by gender expectations. The evolution of dimensional working–girl protagonists develops an unconventional female identity, which breaks the common tropes of a woman's role in literature and society. Independent female archetypes often adopt masculine qualities to achieve status, earnest acceptance and independence in a man's world. The heroine, Nancy Drew, promotes the corrosion of traditional female identity, inheriting male–identified traits to express success and strength. In the first chapter of Carolyn Keene's mystery novel, The Message in the Hollow Oak, the archetype of a strong female character equates success from transcending into male–identified personality, reverting from tradition femininity and adopting male qualifies to express strong independent characteristics. Through the narrative exposition and indirect integration of character development through dialogue and inner monologue, female characters within the novel display strength by identifying with masculine strength. Female identity is contrasted through the characterization of George and Bess, identifying two representations of femininity as one that conforms to the norms of gender within society, and one who equates boyish physical appearance with strength and success. The comic Stumptown by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth and the retro audio podcast Nick Carter: Master Detective starring Lon Clack portray the different roles of women in detective fiction. Nick Carter was on the radio from 1943 to 1955, and represents more traditional roles for gender. Over the 125 episodes, the radio show followed detective Nick Carter and his female assistant, Patsy on different crime scene investigations. Carter was also able to solve seemingly impossible crimes by looking at unique angles. Stumptown was published in 2011. It represents a more modern view on gender roles in detecting. In this comic, Dex Parios, a private investigator, is hired to find someone's granddaughter. She encounters many difficulties while investigating and attempting to find the missing girl. In the end, the plot ends up being a lot more complicated than initially presented. In this essay, I am going to look at how the role of gender in detective fiction has evolved over time. Although Nick Carter had both books and a movie about him, the most well– known installment of his story was the radio show. Nick Carter: Master Detective was produced in the 1940s and 50s, which means it reflects a traditional view of gender roles in detecting, as well as in the world, that was common of this time period. • 67. The Tangent Mind In Donnie Darko "The basic dilemma of all human existence is that each element of the psychic apparatus makes demands upon us that are incompatible with the other two. Inner conflict is inevitable". Richard Kelly's careful utilization of the tangent universe in Donnie Darko, as well and the characters within it, are reflective of Freuds aspects of the human psyche, and the unconsciousness mind. Freud's structure of the mind is composed of the id, ego, and superego and each are represented by one the main characters in the film. At the conscious level of the human psyche emotional, physical, and spiritual awareness is fully realized. While at the unconscious level, these aspects still influence and drive the individual, yet the individual is unaware of their presence. In the beginning of the film, Donnie is the black sheep of his family, a lonely outcast with no defined purpose in life. As the film progresses Donnie's level of consciousness cultivates parallel to development of the movie's plot, as he fulfills his destiny as the living receiver. According to Freud's ideology the id engages in foolish, illogical, and unrealistic thought processes, and is disconnected from reality due to its unconscious location (Freud 17–19). • 69. Reflection Essay Many people experience exclusion in their lives; yet, when they feel included, they experience the process of healing. In the memoir Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Power of Adversity, Dw Brees' journey to healing is explored. This experience of exclusion to inclusion is also discussed in Becoming Human by Jean Vanier. The New Orleans Saints accepted Drew, a severely injured quarterback at the time, just as Jean Vanier accepted people with intellectual disabilities into L'Arche. Withal, Drew is given the opportunity to motivate and inspire his team, and those people included in the L'Arche community are given the opportunity to develop new, meaningful relationships. For Drew, having this opportunity results in a milestone for the whole team that represents hope for New Orleans, while the people with intellectual disabilities being able to be in an inclusive community result in the maturity of the heart. Both works suggest that being inclusive towards other people, especially those excluded in society, by welcoming them into a particular community result in a person's internal and external healing. The New Orleans Saints accepted the severely injured quarterback as Jean Vanier accepted people with intellectual disabilities into L'Arche. The philosopher shares his story about one of the people he welcomed into the community. "Antonio came to our community in Trosly when he was twenty years old, after many years in hospital. He could not walk, speak, or use his hands; he needed extra oxygen to breathe. He was a weak and fragile man in many ways but he had an incredible smile and beautiful shining eyes"(Vanier 91). Antonio was very weak, fragile and needy but Vanier noticed that despite his weaknesses, he is a man full of joy. When Antonio joins the community, the members realized that life is more than a competition to become successful financially, academically, etc. According to Vanier, acceptance is the first step of healing. As the chapter implies, going from exclusion to inclusion in the path of healing. Once Antonio is accepted into L'Arche, healing occurs when the members felt different after Antonio joined the community, since their competitive mindset transformed into a more tender and loving one. ... This is, in part, due to the impeccable performances by each and every member of the cast. Most incredible of all, however, is his terrifying screen presence as he trudges slowly through a deserted corridor or along a dark street, head tilted slightly forward, face fixed in a confused, bewildered expression.
