2. Baudrillard
Baudrillard born 27th July and died
aged 77 on march 6th 2007. He is a
French sociologist and philosopher.
He taught sociology for many years.
He has written several books on
controversial subjects like how the gulf war never
happened.
3. The theory
• Media texts make visible and challenge ideas of
truth and reality, removing the illusion that any
media text can ever accurately or neutrally
reproduce reality or truth
• There is now only surface meaning; there is no
longer any 'original' thing for a sign to represent -
the sign is the meaning. Society made up wholly
of simulacra - simulations of reality which replace
any 'pure' reality. 'Pure' reality is replaced by the
hyperreal where the boundary between the real
and the imaginary is eroded
4. Example
• Any film which has used any CGI is an example
of hyperreality, for example the film 300 which
was all shot in front of a blue/green screen
and then the settings were superimposed.
