Carbon cycles through the atmosphere, living things like plants and animals, and the earth. Carbon enters the atmosphere mainly through respiration and burning fossil fuels. It is removed from the atmosphere through photosynthesis by plants and enters the bodies of living things. When organisms die, their carbon becomes stored in the ground and may eventually form fossil fuels over time.
