1. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
The audience feedbackthroughoutthe research,planningandconstructionstageswasuseful
because itenabledustomake any necessarychangesandto make sure that our mainproductand
ancillarytextslookasprofessional aspossible.Italsoensuredthat we were creatingourproducts
withour targetaudience inmind.
The feedbackwe gotfrom ourtarget audience
interviewswashelpful because ittolduswhatthe
audience wantedtosee andwhattheydidnot want
to see andwhat theyfoundrepetitive in thisgenre.
For example,ourtargetaudience saidthatthey
preferanindie rockmusicvideotohave a deeper
meaning,we tookthisintoconsiderationand
workedonthe meaningourvideocouldhave from
the interpretationof the lyricsandcame upwithour owninterpretationwhichthe audience liked
whentellingthemduringourpitch. The audience alsosaidthattheydidnotwant the actors to have
extravagantmake upbecause itwoulddistractthem
fromthe storyline andisnotrepresentativeof thisgenre
so we usedsubtle make uponthe actors face inorder to
keepitsimple andbarelynoticeable sowe decidedthat
we wouldonlyputsubtle make uponour actors as
showninthe picture, thisactor onlyhas a bitof dirton
herface to looklike sootfromthe fire.Theyalsosaid
that theydidnot like the diegeticsoundsince ittakes
away fromthe storyline anddistractsthe audience
so we didnot use anydiegeticsound,similarly
theysaidthat theywantedtosee ‘normal’,every
day clothingsoagainthey do notget side-tracked
whichwe listenedtoandtookintoconsideration
and usedeverydayclothingbutthe audience does
not reallysee the clothinginthe videosoitwas
not as importantbutwe still tookonboard the
feedback. We triedtocoverall of thiswhencreatingourmusicvideoandI thinkwe have done this
successfullyandIthinkwe have createdaproduct that relatestothe audiencespreference. From
this,I have learnedthatwe needtotake intoconsiderationthe audiences’needsinordertocreate a
productthat bestsuitsthemand bydoingthis,we createda product that we feltlookedprofessional
and alsocateredto the needsof the targetaudience.Thisfeedbackwasveryuseful asitmeantthat
we couldchange our ideasonthe storyboardbefore filminganythingsowe couldplanthe shots
aroundwhat the target audience wantedtosee.Withoutthisfeedback, the musicvideowouldnot
be as effective asitwouldn’tbe whatthe targetaudience wouldwanttosee whichwouldmake it
completely pointlessbutaftertakingthe feedbackintoconsiderationandmakingsome crucial
changes,we feel thatitbestfitswithwhatthe target audience wantedtosee.
2. We have hadformative feedbackthroughoutourresearch,planningandconstructionstages.We
createdstoryboarddraftsas part of our researchandplanningsothat we couldsee whatideas
workedwell andwhichdidnotandto get a feel of whatwe wantour
videotolooklike.Thisfeedbackwasvital asitmeantthat we could
make the changes the class
suggestedbefore filminganything.
Thisis lesstime consumingasif we
didnot have thisfeedback,we
wouldhave hadto filmevenmore
to make the videolookbetter.The
feedbackwe gotforthe rough
draftswas that we neededtofocus
more on the protagonistandto add
more fire inthe eye scenes.Asa resultof thisfeedback,we
drewthe storyboardagainas a final draftandaddedmore of the protagonistscenestoaddmore
depthto the storyline. We alsoaddedmore eye scenestoourstoryboardbut we were notsure that
we wantedto use the eye scenesthatmuchthroughoutso we didnotfilmmore than one eye scene
whencreatingthe videoasitis verytime consuming
and the shotsare difficulttocompose andfilm. We
made several ancillarydrafts because we werenotsure
whatlookedbestforthe genre whenmakingthemon
PowerPointsowe decidedthatwe wouldgetthe class
to tell uswhattheypreferredfromall the drafts.We
endedup addingdifferentdraftstogethertomake the
full digipak. The feedbackwe got fromthe drafts was that the
blackand white looksgoodbutfestive,the pictureishardto
see butthe flame onthe back looksprofessional.Thisfeedback
helpedusbecause itenabledustomake some changes,e.g.
we toneddownthe pencil strokesonPowerPointsothatthe
audience couldsee the picturesbetter,withregardstothe
blackand white,we leftone panel withoutblackandwhite but
leftthe otherthree inblackand white because we feltthatit
fitbetterwiththe genre – despite the ‘festive’feel. This
feedbackallowedustomake specificchangestothe final
productto make it lookbetter. The feedbackwe gotfromthe firsthalf of our musicvideowasthat
some of our shotswere too longandthat we needto focusmore on a storyline sowe wentoutand
filmedmore footage of the protagonisttoaddto the storyline whichmade usrealisethatwe were
lackingwithregardsto a storyline sothisfeedbackwasespeciallyhelpful because itmeantthatwe
couldfocusmore upon this. We decidedtoshortenthe shotsbecause of thissothat theydidnot
drag on fortoo long– the shotswere so longbecause we didnothave enoughfootage tofill the
gaps sowe draggedoutthe clips.Afterreceivingthis,we wentandfilmedmore sowe couldshorten
the shotsand thenfitmore shots in,especiallytodowiththe storyline. The formative feedbackwe
got here helpedussignificantlybecauseitallowedustomake our musicvideolookbetterandmake
it more interestingforouraudience. If we didnotshortenthe shotsthenitwouldhave beenboring
aftera while,if we didnotgooutand filmmore thenthere wouldbe nostoryline whichwouldmean
3. our storyboard/pitchideaswouldhave beenignored.Overall,the formative feedbackwe gotwas
veryhelpful becauseitmeantwe couldgoback and make changesto the workwe had done to
improve itandmake it lookbetterandalsomade sure we were notmakinganylittle mistakes.
We alsoshowedourfinal musicvideotothe classto getfeedbackonthe final productandto check
we had not made anymistakesbefore sharingitonsocial media.
Our musicvideowasshownonthe projectorand the classwrote
theirfeedbackona post-itnote andgave itto us at the end. Some
of the feedbackwe gotwasthat the shot varietywasgood, the
reflectionof the fire inthe eye wasbrilliantandthatthe storyline
was limited.Thisfeedbackhashelpedusbecause itshowsuswhat
people enjoyedfromitandwhatwe couldpossiblyhave changed.
Although,we couldnotchange certainthingssuchas the camera
qualitybecause itisnotour faultand wouldtake extratime tofilm
the whole thingagainina good qualitycamera.Withregardsto
the limitedstoryline - we thoughtwe conveyedourinterpretation
throughoutandmade reference tothe storyline throughthe key
themesinthe video. Overall, the feedbackwe got wasverypositive andthe onlycriticismswere
thingswe had alreadypickeduponbutcould notchange since it wastoo late and itwouldhave
takentoo long.
Once the videowas completedwe putiton YouTube andFacebookto gathermore feedback. This
was notas useful ason mobile phonesbecause the videowouldnotplayonmobile devicesforan
unknownreason(we triedtofix thisissue butwe could
not doanythingaboutit) but itwouldplayon the
computer.The feedbackwe gotfromYouTube and
Facebookwasveryminimal due tothe technical problems
we faced.Despite the issues,usingFacebookmeantthat
we couldshare our videowithpeople whofitourtarget
audience demographicandthismeantthatwe couldget
constructive feedbackfromthis.The feedbackwe gotwas
that itdefinitelylooksbetterthanourASfilmopeningand
we capture the emotionreallywellthroughoutthe media
product.People alsosaidthatthey couldtell the
difference betweenthe cameraqualityassome of itis ina
higherqualitythanotherpartsand that the fire looksdifferentinsome shots.Thishelpedusto
make a decisiononwhatwe wouldchange if we were todo thisagain,we wouldhave usedthe
same camera throughoutsothat we didnot have the same problemswiththe varyingqualityand
we wouldhave filmedall the fire scenesonthe same day,we triedtodo thisbut we neededmore
footage whenitcame to editingsowe hadto go out and filmagaininorderto make sure that the
storyline makessense andthatwe had enoughfootage.Generallythe feedbackwe gotwasvery
positive andthere wasnotmuchwe neededtochange butthe critical feedbackmeantthatwe can
make sure we do not make the same mistakesaslasttime.
In conclusion,Ithinkthatthe cinematographyaspectof ourvideowentdownwell because itmade
the product lookprofessional andof averyhigh standardand I thinkthatthe storyline waswell
4. developedthroughout. However, the audience didnotlike the factthatthere wasa difference in
camera qualityandfire scenesbecause itlackedcontinuityandconfusedthe storyline.Overall,I
wouldchange the fact that we useddifferentcamerasanda differentfire because itmade the video
as a whole looklessprofessional, the cameraqualitywasnotasnoticeable asthe fire atthe end
whichlookedcompletelydifferenttothe otherfire.We triedourbestto coverthisup but
unfortunatelyitwasstill verynoticeable and the audience pickedthisout.Despite havingafew
problems,Ithinkall three of ourproductswentwell andwe didall we couldto improve the
problemshighlightedbyourclass/audience.The feedbacksessionswere of greatuse tous because
it made usaware of what didnot lookgoodand allowedustomake changestothis. It alsomeant
that we couldsee whatworkedwell foruswhichhelpedustosee whatwe shouldinclude more of.
All the feedbackwe gothelpedusinseveral waysthroughoutthese stages.
