The “Blue Plaque” Historic Landmark Awards recognize historic buildings around Santa Cruz. Since the program started in 1973, over 200 of the familiar, blue, oval markers have been awarded countywide. In order to qualify for the award, structures must be at least 50 years old, located within Santa Cruz County, and associated with a person or event of historical significance. The plaques displayed on building exteriors alert passersby that deeper stories exist—not only about the structure, but of lifestyles and neighborhood character, meaningful events, and personal experiences.
