"There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home", repeated
Dorothy. A young girl trying to go back home to Kansas after a cyclone lands her and her dog, Toto,
in the Land of Oz. There Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the TinMan, and the Cowardly Lion who are
all in need of something that is considered important to them; a brain, a heart, and courage. Along
the way, they have to travel to Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz, directed by the Good Witch of
the North, especially for Dorothy to get back home. However, Dorothy and the gang run into
problems with the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants Dorothy's ruby slippers (which was

Many of the farmers from the West blamed their problems on the wealthy and industry. Later on in
the text, Dorothy meets the Good Witch of the North. The Good Witch represents a Northern
electorate who had supported populism. The Good Witch sends Dorothy to go to the Wizard of Oz,
down the yellow brick road to Emerald City, who has the power to send her back to Kansas. The
Good Witch also gives Dorothy the silver shoes, which also serves as protection. This can relate to
the Bimetalism vs. Gold Standard. I say this because Dorothy shoes are silver and she is sent to go
down the yellow brick road, which can be seen as gold bricks. This can be known as gold money. In
this time, it was clear that silver vs. gold was important to the farmers involving the economy. The
silver was supposed to be available for the working class, and would increase the amount of money
for the working class. In the text, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion.
The Scarecrow represents the western farmers, and how their hardships and troubles from inflation
caused them to have doubts and problems with their money. The Tinman represents the American
worker who mostly has populist views. He also represents how the worker felt dehumanized and
was helpless. In addition to this, the Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on him that every time he
swung his axe, he would chop a piece of him off. This would make his body smaller, in relation to
his work being minimized by the

The Wizard Of Oz By F. Frank Baum Essay
The motion picture, The Wizard of Oz was released by the studio Metro–Goldwyn–Mayer on
August 12,1939. The movie was adapted from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" writings of L. Frank
Baum in 1900 (Maltin 2015). The imaginary children's fable is recognized by the enduring musical
score, the many idioms used: "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" and "Follow the yellow brick
road" are phrases recalled in the movie (Wizard 1939). The fledgling Dorothy character and dog
Toto traverse a pathway in Kansas and in Munchkin–land while eluding malicious barriers to the
discovery of Oz. The characters encountered on the journey epitomize the traits needed to realize the
goals sought: knowledge, emotion and courage. The movie exhibits evil and ethical, greed and
deceit and how dreams of the future can supply the motivation to endure the horrors encountered.
The original 1900 manuscript by Baum envisioned the evolution of the Nazi party and the
persecution of the Jews in 1933 and is visualized in the children's motion picture The Wizard of Oz.
The opening of the movie, a terrified Dorothy and Toto runs down the bumpy dirt pathway glancing
over her shoulder three times she stoops to inform her pal "She isn't coming yet, Toto" (02:05). She
fears the mean and evil powerful Almira Gulch, who has threatened the dog with its excursion into
her yard. Safe at the farmhouse Dorothy explains to anyone that will listen that Miss Gulch is a
threat; family and farm–hands disregard her words. The scene

Examples Of Archetype In The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz Archetypes Everyone is unique in their own way but we are all placed under a
general characterization or archetype. In the movie, The Wizard of Oz, each character is placed
under a specific archetype. For example Dorothy is the maiden, Glinda the good witch of the north
is the mother, the wicked witch of the west is the villain, the lion is the child, and the tin man is the
father. Each character has a certain type of personality that makes them a certain archetype. Dorothy,
the main character, is the maiden because she is a very innocent and pure person. She's very
worrisome when she says, "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Dorothy expresses
worry when she says this because she doesn't know where she ... Show more content on

She's the villain because she opposes anything that Glinda, Dorothy and her friends do. She
desperately wants her sister's slippers back that Dorothy wears during the movie and will do
anything to try and get them. The wicked witch of the west said, "I'll get you my pretty and your
little dog too!" This shows that the witch is the villain because she told Dorothy that she's going
after her and will get her slippers at some point in the movie. The witch follows Dorothy and her
friends throughout their journey down the yellow brick road, she taunts them their whole way to see
the wizard. The witch is the villain because she truly opposes everything that Dorothy does and
wants to keep her from going home to Kansas with her sister's slippers. The archetype, child, is the
cowardly lion. The lion is very childish and longs for help from others. The lion said, "I do believe
in spooks. I do believe in spooks. I do. I do. I do. I do." The lion is very timid towards others and is
very scared of almost everything around him. The lion acted tough when he first met Dorothy, the
scarecrow, and the tin man, but shortly after that he showed that he was scared and a cowardly lion.
The lion is cowardly because he wants to act tough because of whom he is, but he is very scared of
everything around and wants to gain courage from the

The Wiz Analysis
I did the music video on the movie The Wiz. The Wiz is a Broadway musical based on a girl named
Dorothy. The movie focuses on Dorothy and her friend's adventure to go and see the Wiz. Dorothy is
a school teacher and she really liked her life just the way it was. Her aunt Em encouraged her to start
teaching high school instead of Kindergarten. However, Dorothy liked teaching Kindergarten and
she's not a big fan of change. She liked her life just the way it is. Her aunt Em encouraged her to
broaden her horizons but she just didn't want to.
After Dorothy ends up in the Land of Oz she wants to go back to her home in New York. She's
really confused and doesn't really known what's happening. The only way for her to get back home
is for her to go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dorothy and the Scarecrow invite the Tinman to come with them to see the Wiz and ask for a heart.
Afterwards, they meet the Lion who doesn't have any courage. Soon enough, Dorothy tells the Lion
to go with them so that the Wiz can give him courage.
Dorothy and her friends finally got to Emerald City. They finally got to see the Wiz and he told them
that he would not grant any of their wishes unless she killed the wicked witch of the West. Dorothy
and all of her friends were really disappointed. Eventually, Dorothy and her friends went to see the
wicked witch of the West and the witch was very mean to them. The witch really wanted Dorothy's
slippers but she refused to give them to her. Dorothy is starting to get discouraged because the witch
seemed to be more powerful than she was.
The witch began to torture the Lion and the Tinman. Dorothy decided to give her the shoes because
she didn't want to see her friends being tortured anymore. The Scarecrow told Dorothy to pull the
fire alarm. After Dorothy pulled the alarm water started pouring down everywhere. The witch was
allergic to water and she dies after getting drenched with water. Afterwards, everyone in Emerald
City is freed from the wicked witch of the

Summary Of Elmira Gulch In 'Wizard Of Oz'
A gulch can be defined as a deep, sheer cleft or abyss often occupied by an extreme threat. Elmira
Gulch in "Wizard of Oz" is the antagonist, constantly pushing Dorothy off course. She represents
her name in a way that shows her lack of life and the evil within her. Elmira Gulch represents her
name within the film through her actions. The moment Dorothy enters Oz, Miss Gulch's death is
signified by the witch who was crushed beneath the house. The significance of Elmira Gulch's death
represents her name, because her death marked the point at which the action of attempting to fill the
void within her by tormenting Dorothy would occur. After the Munchkins celebrated the death of the
Wicked Witch of the East, the Wicked Witch of the West appears

The Film Analysis Of The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a film whom plot is based on a sad and lonely Kansas farm girl, whose name is
Dorothy. Dorothy is unhappy and dreams of a better place without hatred toward her dog Toto from
a hateful neighbor spinster, so in that case Dorothy plans to run away to escape the unhappy life she
lives. During her plan to run away a terrifying tornado strikes her town and Dorothy is struck on the
head and transported to a falsity land called "beyond the rainbow" where she interacts with people
that are from her real life but are transformed into magical characters. On the the yellow brick road
Dorothy meets friends who on the way overthrow the Wicked Witch of the West. Each one of the
friends including Dorothy have a heart desire of what they want and soon were granted with it from
the Wizard of OZ. At the end Dorothy was enabled to return to Kansas her home. "The shot" in the
film The Wizard of Oz established many details throughout the film. The scene when the Wicked
Witch of the West appeared to find her sister The Wicked Witch of the East dead under the house
with her legs sticking out and her feet that had the red sparkling shoes is a great example of
establishing a shot. It established the details, the time, and the place of the film. While the witch is
ranting about the heals gone missing and being placed on Dorothy's feet they create a "close–up"
shot on the Wicked Witch of the West when she says, "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too."

What Is The Wiz Compared To The Wizard Of Oz
In 1939 one of the most memorable film was released, The Wizard of Oz. In 1978 The Wiz, an
urban reimaging of the exemplary novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz put an African American vibe
to a film. The novel turned into films follows the adventures of Dorothy, a girl who embark on an
adventure in strange and fantastical land just wanting to go back home. In this essay I'm going to
plot each film and compare the main character of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion
and the Wiz and discuss how the design and music differ from each film.

Wizard of Oz Narrative Report
Assignment 1 – Narrative Report
Story and Plot
In a narrative film, a plot is considered all visible and audible elements present in a film, in essence
the film in its entirety including nondiegetic images. In The Wizard of Oz, the plot begins with
Dorothy (Judy Garland), a young farm girl from Kansas who dreams of escaping to 'somewhere
over the rainbow' without troubles and torment for her dog Toto from a horrible neighbour Miss
Gulch (Margaret Hamilton). During a tornado she is hit on the head and is transported to the World
of Oz where she meets characters transformed from her Kansas life at home, meeting three
companions who are all missing a quality that they wish to gain. She goes on a journey with them all

Oz is shot in bright and vibrant colours, which pertains to the idea of a magical land that appears
very opposed to the dull and colourless real world of Kansas, assisting on taking the viewer on the
journey 'over the rainbow'. This goal oriented plot in The Wizard of Oz follows a pattern of
development that encourages the viewer to expect Dorothy to reach her desired goal. The viewer
then sees each action of Dorothy's to be a progress of this desire to go home to Kansas.
The film is brought to a climax when the Dorothy and her friends return to visit the Wizard after
destroying the Wicked Witch of the West, of which he had requested. During this scene it is revealed
that the Wizard is in fact a fraud, an ordinary but clever man who although as no powers, still fulfils
the expectations of the story. He gives Scarecrow, Tinman and the Cowardly Lion the answers they
seek by giving them the self confidence to recognise they had the qualities which they were looking
for all along and he presents them with some token external symbols to represent this.
In the final scenes and formal resolution of the film, which is shot in sepia tones creating a
parallelism with Kansas on the opening scene, Dorothy attains her goal of returning home, waking
up in her own bedroom surrounded by friends and family from her real life, therefore fulfilling the

The Wizard Of Oz Character Analysis
Cheris Kramarae once said, "Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings."
According to Merriam–Webster, Feminism is defined as "the belief that men and women should
have equal rights and opportunities" The ideal female character is normally depicted as weak and
vulnerable in comparison to men, but truly it is not the case. In L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz,
the main character, Dorothy, is portraying the role of an independent female as opposed to the
typical damsel in distress. She unintentionally kills the Wicked Witch of the Eest and is praised as a
heroine in the land of Oz. Dorothy is the complete opposite of the ideal female character. She is
portrayed as self–reliant, strong and peaceful all throughout the story. In ... Show more content on

When captured by the Wicked Witch of the West, she orders a pack of great wolves to tear her and
her companions to pieces. The Wicked Witch of the West says, "one is of tin, one of straw; one is a
girl and another a Lion. None of them is fit to work, so you may tear them into small pieces" (Baum
87). Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion are all depicted as weak and unable to work.
However, this completely defies how Dorothy is portrayed as powerful and self–reliant throughout
the story. The witch labels her as just a girl, when she really is much more. She is going on this
journey enduring several obstacles and companions to finally get herself back home to Kansas. This
shows her true dedication and care for not only herself, but others. Lastly, Dorothy shows her
assertiveness and courageousness when she kills the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy cries, 'You
are a wicked creature'...This made Dorothy so very angry that she picked up the bucket of
water...dashed it over the Witch, wetting her from head to foot... The witch cries, 'In a minute I shall
melt away" (Baum 96). Dorothy defies all odds as she rescues and saves herself, yet again. She
shows her independence and courageousness as she kills the Wicked Witch of the West and frees the
people again. She defies the ideal helpless damsel in distress and creates a strong independent
female character that is the basis of this story. Without Dorothy as the heroine of this story, the land
of Oz would be doomed.

The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Imagine a child that was born with a bright green tint to their skin and had razor sharp teeth. This
happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,
written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical "Wicked," by Winnie Holzman, was based on
this novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. "Wicked" draws in
many people because they can relate to the feeling of being ostracized the way Elphaba was. In the
21st century, musicals have progressed along with technology due to the use of new special effects
in musicals today. The New Millennium marks the beginning of the 21st century. On September 9th
2001 one of the most horrific events had occurred (History.com Staff). Al–Qaeda terrorists had
taken over four planes. The terrorists had purposely crashed two of the planes into the Twin Towers.
A third plane had then been crashed into the Pentagon. The first plane had crashed at 8:46 in the
morning. The plane had crashed between the 80th and 110th floor. 18 minutes after the first crash
another plane had crashed into the south tower near the 60th floor. Fifteen minutes later the south
tower collapsed causing a huge cloud of dust to arrive. At 10:30 a.m. the second tower collapsed.
3000 people were killed in this disaster (History.com Staff). It is a day America will never forget.
One thing that has really progressed in the 21st century is the technology. In 2005 YouTube was
launched (FutureTimeline.net). It

Political Figures In The Wizard Of Oz
Political Figures in the Land of Oz
Many people hold the opinion that they want political issues to stay separated from their leisure
entertainment, but it is impossible to create even the simplest of entertainment without taking on
some form of politics. In the 1939 musical film, The Wizard of Oz, witches and wizards are likened
to various politicians of the 'real world.' At this historical moment, Americans were watching World
War II unfold from the sidelines, seeing horrific dictators and many nations' leaders on their screens.
The Wizard of Oz mimics this through magical figures. They are powerful figures who manipulate
and control the masses in order to wipe out competition and and move up the ranks. From Glinda
waiting to tell Dorothy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examining these plain Midwestern folk helps provide insight to my argument of the movie's
politics. Almira Gulch, who is mirrored in the land of Oz by the Wicked Witch, is a middle aged
spinster with wealth, as she is described by Auntie Em as "[owning] half the county." This correlates
to the Wicked Witch's ownership of the western half of Oz. However, despite Almira's apparent
power within the town, she comes across as weak and lacking when compared to Auntie Em or
Dorothy. Sure, her words may be threatening, but all the problems she presents–hatred towards
Dorothy, taking Toto away–seem to be solved as easily as they came about. Ultimately, Almira
presents no real threat, but simply has the beginnings of a powerful politician within her. In the Land
of Oz, we see what would happen to Almira she were given the power necessary to truly strike fear
into the hearts of

How Is Glinda A Wicked Witch
The Wicked Witch of the West's hunger for power is another big part of her character. She spends
much of her time in both the film and the book wanting the ruby slippers, or in the case of the book,
the silver shoes, because of the powers they possess. One might also speculate that an additional
reason the Witch was so mad at Dorothy when her sister was squashed, is because the witch felt
threatened by this newcomer that is apparently powerful enough to kill a witch. If the Witch of the
West did, in fact, feel threatened by Dorothy, it would certainly explain why she felt the need to
continually assert her dominance over Dorothy and threaten her.
Even in her character design, the Wicked Witch of the West denies femininity. As Rushdie points ...

She is clearly important and the one in charge of the farm back in Kansas, but even she depicts at
least one of Ellmann's feminine stereotypes. As she has little screen time, there is not much we know
about Aunt Em's character. It is clear, however, that Aunt Em depicts the stereotype of piety. One of
her most iconic lines is "for twenty–three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you,
and now, well, being a Christian woman I can't say it," and, as Rushdie points out in his essay Out of
Kansas, this is the only mention of religion in the entire film (Wizard 0:10:07–0:10:13)(Rushdie 6).
Additionally, Dorothy tends to think of Aunt Em in a saint–like light, clearly looking up to her and
even recalling the time Aunt Em nursed Dorothy back to health (Wizard 0:14:14–0:14:18). Because
we see very little of her, there is not much more we can say about Aunt Em's character in this light,
but it is notable that such care would be given to ensure that a good female character would depict at
least one of these stereotypes despite her lack of screen

Wicked Witch Of The West Research Paper
Wicked in the West
8th March 2016, Georgia Knight explores the motives of why the Wicked Witch of the West is the
ultimate villain, http://picture.finomeb.top/s/wicked–witch–of–the–west/
A shot of what the ultimate villain looks like.
WHAT MAKES UP THE ULTIMATE VILLAIN? The green face, the black gown, the wide brim
hat or the nose? If you ask anyone who is familiar with the film Wizard of Oz they would say that
Elphaba, commonly known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is the ultimate villain.
The classic, iconic and memorable Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba is well known to audiences
around the world. Her first appearance in The Wizard of Oz, 1939 film started off her career in
notoriety.

The director uses black to create meaning of her intimidating and unfriendly personality.
Elphaba is famous for bribery, harming and holding captive her enemies and people who are a threat
to her. In the movie she bribes Dorothy for the red slippers, sets fire to the scarecrow and holds
captive Dorothy and her friends.
The Wicked Witch of the West also holds grudges, likes to get revenge and can be very scary. In the
movie Elphaba's sister, the Wicked Witch of the East, is killed accidentally by Dorothy's arrival.
Dorothy explains that it was an accident but Elphaba replies: "Well, my little pretty, I can cause
accidents too..."
Film aesthetics of low angle shots are used frequently throughout the film. The director uses lots of
low shots when Dorothy and her friends are trapped in the Wicked Witch's castle. This film aesthetic
is used to enhance and to captivate the treatment to others throughout the

Wizard Of Oz Goal And Journey
People have always prayed to the Gods to ask for less problems in life, yet there should wish be
more intelligent to solve them instead. In reality, people have their own jobs that require more
responsible. In fact, working, studying or fulfilling any duties are the preexisted problems that are
waiting people to solve, but everything can be solved if they are willing to do that. It depends on
how patient and assiduous they are with those obstacles along the way to reach what they need.
Since the goal and journey are always turned out to be an issue in reality, most authors often implant
the idea of goal and journey in their books. Among them, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has
outstandingly implicated the goal and journey. In the book, it has emerged ... Show more content on

Firstly, the Scarecrow and the Lion aimed to go to the same place to achieve their goal, since the Oz
ordered all companions to kill wicked witch of the west. Among of them, Scarecrow had agreed the
Oz's command, and continued the journey with his friend in order to get brain from the Oz. He
needed to go to the west where the wicked witch's land is (Baum, 2013, pp. 76–80). This means that
the Scarecrow had the willingness to achieve his goal. Similarly, in order to get courage from the
Oz, the Lion wanted to kill the wicked witch as well (Baum, 2013, pp. 78–80). Afterward, the
Scarecrow and the Lion faced different conflicts along the journey to achieve their goal. While they
were going to the west, the Scarecrow and the Lion faced many strange circumstances, which were
created by the wicked witch. The Scarecrow fought against those conflicts such as scarring all
crows, commanded by the wicked witch, to fly away in order to protect his companions from
danger; sadly, he has been destroyed by winged monkeys, the supporters of wicked witch that was

Similarities Between Wizard Of Oz And Wicked
Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Two very different stories both sharing the same characters and setting.
The two plots are so masterfully intertwined, but showing two very different points of view.
Although they share so many similarities, relationships and conflicts between the two are very
different. Glinda maybe isn't so good after all, Elphaba was just trying to do what was right, and the
Wizard was the real villain all along. To truly see things as they really are, both sides of a story must
be acknowledged and understood, or else someone else's story will be lost.
The Wizard of Oz is a classic known by all. The plot is fairly simple. Poor bored Dorothy is sick of
her normal boring life on her Aunt and Uncles farm in Kansas and decides to run away to a more
exciting life. Her plans are changed when she meets a fortune teller who convinces her to go back
home. Unfortunately, as she is headed back home a horrible storm starts and she and her dog Toto
are blown away, along with her house. When she lands, she comes outside to see that she has landed
on a person with red shoes. She is met by tiny people and a witch called Glinda who tells her that
she has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy tells Glinda she wants to go
home, and Glinda tells her if she follows the yellow brick road she will end up in the Emerald City
where the Wonderful Wizard of Oz can help get her home.

The Wizard Of Oz By F. Frank Baum
The Wizard of Oz, is undoubtedly one of the most monumental films of all time. Being the first full–
length, live–action film to be colored, it was a pivotal film in movie history. Audiences were awe–
struck with the shocking new use of color. With the addition of color to the still quite new use of
sound in pictures, viewers were given an even more fantastically realistic experience. The Wizard of
Oz is a classic story which shares the journey of Dorothy Gale and her adventures which take her to
where she belongs. This film provides the audience with a message and reminder that one truly

She then disappears in another cloud of red smoke, leaving the terrified bystanders, the munchkins,
and Dorothy, in a state of distress. The creators of the movie had a spectacular grasp on making the
visual storytelling. Since The Wizard of Oz is the first colored movie, the special effects, sets, and
costumes were highly emphasized and ornate. The first shot in this The Wizard of Oz scene is a
wide shot of Munchkinland with a voluminous mass of red smoke taking focus. With the same
camera angle, the munchkins run away from the mast of smoke and lay on the floor as the Wicked
Witch of the West is revealed. The dark crimson of the smoke contrasts greatly with the happy hues
of blue, green, and yellow that encompass the town. This signifies the great difference between the
joy of the munchkins and the anger of the witch. There is then a close up shot of the witch which
quickly cuts to a shot of a terrified Dorothy. It cuts back to a close up of the witch, and the camera
zooms out as it follows her as she walks over to Dorothy's fallen house. It then proceeds to show a
two shot of Glinda placing a reassuring hand on Dorothy's shoulder. Glinda explains who the witch
is to Dorothy, saying that she is the sister of the witch whom was killed by the house. The next shot
is a single shot of the witch walking towards Glinda and Dorothy as she asks who killed her sister.

Analysis Of The Play ' Somewhere Over The Rainbow '
The play opens up with the Overture then the teenage Dorothy Gale enters the scene. Dorothy Gale
lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and her dog Toto, but she feels like no
one understands her which leads to the first song called "Nobody Understands Me." Then the evil
Mrs. Gulch comes in threatens to call the authorities after Toto bit her. Dorothy wants to escape and
go see the world which opens up to the most well–known song of the Play "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow." Dorothy leaves the farm and meets Professor Marvel who tells her about the "Wonders of
the World." Then a twister disrupted their conversation and Dorothy has to run home for shelter. She
makes it back inside the house and end up hitting her head. The house is swept up by the Twister.
Dorothy ended up Landing in a land called Oz and find out quickly that she had killed the Wicked
Witch of the East. Glinda the Good Witch of the North appears and welcomes Dorothy to Munchkin
Land. Glinda calls out to the munchkins with a song called "Come Out." The munchkins welcome
Dorothy and her dog Toto with "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead"; "We Welcome You to Munchkin
Land." Glinda awards Dorothy with the magic ruby slippers that belong to the Wicked Witch of the
East. Then the Wicked Witch of the West comes on scene and is enraged about her sister 's death.

Wizard Of Oz Good Vs Evil
"I'll get you my pretty! And your little dog too!" These are the famous words of one of the world's
most iconic villains, the Wicked Witch of the West, the antagonist of the classic film The Wizard of

Witch's ruthless evil. Within the movie, she was stooped, green–skinned, and dressed entirely in

Personal Narrative: Wicked Witch Of The West
Riinngg! The bells rings after lunch and all the nerves hit me like a bullet. During lunch I was trying
to keep my cool and trying not to stress about the whole aspect of being on stage and performing in
front of my peers as the Wicked Witch of the West. It was my first time playing a lead role I didn't
know what to expect, I just hoped and prayed that I would do good by saying all my lines and not
going too fast (as much as I wanted to) and having good acting skills. It was pretty hectic getting
everyone ready on time to warm–up in the music room and get their makeup and costume on.
Because of the fact that it was our first performance, as a whole cast,we didn't know what to expect
from it. So everyone was all over the place worrying about what they had to do. Every time I ...

think we were ready. In our last few rehearsals we had before show time, the whole cast hasn't been
doing a very great job. For example, some of the actors have been forgetting lines, or people just
didn't know what they have to do on that scene they were in. Once I got in the dressing room in the
back of the stage and got dressed as Miss. Gulch, all the nerves I had from when the bell rang had
gone away. It was as if the costume had given me powers. It gave me confidence and right then and
there, I was as happy as I was when I first saw the cast list of who was who in the musical. I was
very proud of myself. Starting in 6th grade all shy when I auditioned for the Musical Willy Wonka
and the Chocolate Factory. I didn't get a big part in the musical just in the chorus. So just looking
back at how I built up my confidence, I'm glad I had joined Choir. Once everyone was ready to

Mise-En-Scene And Cinematography Of The Wizard Of Oz
When watching movies people usually watch simply for the basic plot and storyline. They are more
considered merely about things such as who are the good characters and who the villains compared
to the significance of the scene's lighting. They are more intrigued by things such as who is going to
fall in love with who and who is going to win in the end compared to the sound and editing in the
film. Viewers take for granted the small things and finer details in film which are what make the
characters and storyline possible. Things such as tropes, mise–en–scene, cinematography, editing,
and sound all play major roles in putting movies together and conveying the film's message and plot.

Compare And Contrast Wizard Of Oz
Have you ever seen or been to a musical before? There are so many musicals out there I don't know
if it is possible to see them all. The music and storylines of the musicals are all so unique to one
another, but at the same time can be similar to one another in various ways. Two musicals I have
seen include some of the same characters, but tell two different stories because of the point of view.
One of the musicals I just mentioned is Wizard of Oz and the other one is Wicked. The three areas of
comparison for these two musicals are the how they came to be, the characters, and the plot. The
musical, Wizard of Oz, is based off the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
written in 1900. It's about a girl, Dorothy, who is tired of living ... Show more content on

What Does The Water Symbolize In The Wizard Of Oz
"Lions and tigers, and bears, oh my!" is a well known quote from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,
written by L. Frank Baum. Even though the book was published in 1900 most people are aware of
this quote or of the famous Dorothy. This book helps people realize that confidence lies within.
Throughout the story much symbolism is shown through Dorothy's shoes, the lions missing courage
the tin man's missing brain and the scarecrow missing a heart. Throughout the story The villains are
the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wicked Witch of the East. Theses witches used their power to
control and capture their subjects. The Wicked Witch of the West represents West America, which
included the wealthy railroad, oil barons, and nature. The West America's was going through the
drought in the 19th century. The droughts lasted longer than any other natural disaster and
sometimes long enough to ruin a whole year's worth of crops. Therefore, water was the weapon to
save the crops and as the story symbolizes kill the Wicked Witch of the West. ... Show more content

The Witch of the East was thought to enslave her subjects such as industrialism was believed to
enslave the workers of Eastern America. Poor farmers and workers supported the movement away
from the gold standard, due to the fact that it would have lessened their enormous debt. The populist
party wanted to form an alliance between the southern and midwestern tenant farmers, and the
northern industrial workers. These groups are represented throughout the book by the Good Witch of

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum Essay
In 1939, Victor Fleming made a film version of L. Frank Baum's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of
Oz." However, both the novel and the film focuses or touches on the same moral, it features the
protagonist Dorothy who resides in Kansas the farm, along with her aunt Em and uncle Henry as
well as her dog Toto. Both Baum's novel and Fleming's 1939 film adaptation the setting is in Kansas
which is described as a small farm which Dorothy lives in which in Baum's novel is picturized as
gloomy, grey and dull. Throughout Fleming's adaptation of Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,"
there are a number of differences which presents itself in a direct manner on screen as well as

It is brightly colored and feels almost alive, the design of it by Fleming was very talented and
similar as it looks closely as how it was depicted in the novel. In other words, it looks and fits the
description perfectly.
According to Russell E, the major differences between Frank Baum's novel and Victor Fleming's
film adaptation are as follows: in the original novel the Land of Oz is described as being a real place
but in the film, the Colorful Land of Oz comes into existence only when the protagonist Dorothy
dreams of it. Another major shift and change was that in the novel, Dorothy seems or is described as
being around eight to ten years but she appears much older in the film adaptation, although, she acts
a bit childish and manipulative. Dorothy as seen in the novel comes about three women who are
magical and helps her along the course of her journey. They are known as Glinda , she is the Good
Witch of the South, the Good Witch of the North and the Queen of the field Mice, whereas, in
Fleming's film the only help in which Dorothy receives are from the Good Witch of the North
known as Glinda. There are also other shifts, alterations or changes between the novel and the
adaptation as seen in Baum's novel, the minor character that appears at the end of the story who is
the Wicked Witch of the West, in the film she is the main witch who is chasing Dorothy and her dog
Toto in the wonderful and Colorful Land of Oz. Another difference was in the novel

Characteristics Of The Wizard Of Oz
"The cyclone had set the house down into a country of marvelous beauty." is merely just the
beginning of the tale of Dorothy traveling through a mysterious land, making interesting friends, and
eventually slaying an evil witch. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an epic by L. Frank Baum is
known by children and adults alike all over. And what exactly makes this tale of a naive little girl an
epic? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an epic due to its characteristics, conventions, archetypes, and
the way it follows the stereotypical hero's journey.
Epic characteristics, conventions, and hero characteristics are what make up the epic, The Wizard of
Oz. An epic characteristic seen in the book is how broad the setting is. Throughout Dorothy's time in
Oz, she crosses many different lands that are all unique in their own way; such as The Land of the
East, Emerald City, The Land of the West, and more. A common convention in epics seen in the
Wizard of Oz is a formal plea or an invocation for help being said by Dorothy. In the Wizard of Oz,
Dorothy pleads for either the Wizard or Galinda to take her back home to Kansas. The hero
undertaking a quest or journey is an epic hero characteristic seen in The Wizard of Oz. In the book,
Dorothy takes on a huge quest to defeat the Wicked Witch so she can return home. Through epic
characteristics, conventions, and hero characteristics, the epic The Wizard of Oz follows the epic
hero's journey.

Wizard Of Oz Color Analysis
L. Frank Baum wrote an amazing story using colors to describe each part of Dorothy's journey to
Oz. The color changes throughout the story symbolized setting changes and different stages in her
journey. The colors also represented danger, beauty, power, mood and identified characters and
surroundings.
The story begins with the color gray. Dorothy's home, her dog Toto, the farm she lived on with her
Aunt and Uncle, the land and sky are all gray and dull. "Once the house had been painted, but the
sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as
everything else" (Baum, ch.1). Her hardworking relatives were too busy working on the farm to
have any fun with Dorothy. The best part of Dorothy's life is her best friend Toto, who is black and
the only thing that isn't gray in her life. A fast approaching cyclone is about to change Dorothy's life
forever.

before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum's novel of The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have
no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as
known as Elphaba). But in Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the
West, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in
people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary

She could also go to the extreme trying to save animal civil rights because of what she believes in,
even if it means to have no one to support her. She was coldly rejected when she tried to ask the

tortured and brutally killed. As you can tell, the image of the Wizard of Oz is not so welcoming
compared to Maguire's novel versus Buam's novel. Elphaba plays a very extraordinary female role
compared to a traditional female role Galinda (as known as Glinda). Glinda was mean, conceited,
rude, sociable, pretty and popular woman in college, compared to Elphaba was ugly, an outcast, and
unsociable with the students. Elphaba was able to attend school and later be friends with Glinda and

Oz The Great And Powerful Analysis

phony effects and boring one liners.
Oz the Great and Powerful, well, not so great or powerful, provides itself as a prequel for the

No brain, no heart, and no courage to exceed audience's expectations. Performances are meant to be
compelling and engaging, and yet I was disappointed with the monotonous disaster presented

seem as if they didn't want to be there. Franco's portrayal of a mischievous and clever con–man was
lazy to the point I couldn't tell what Oz was feeling. Whenever he threw a smirk to any of the
characters, it made me want to hide as he looked more like a creepy homeless man down the street
than a bad–boy hero. On the same scale, Mila Kunis' attempt on being the symbolic 'Wicked Witch

voice', it was bound to be a disaster from the start. The lack of 'wickedness' made me laugh at the
witch, rather than scared out of my wits. Rachel Weisz alone delivered a stellar performance as the
original Wicked Witch. By being terrifyingly wicked, she successfully gained the desired emotions
from the audience. Watching her manipulate her sister Theodora to the 'dark side' really made the
audience loathe her but entranced at the fluidity of her actions. Without Weisz, this movie would've

  • 3. Wizard Of Oz: The Good Witch Of The North Janell Marshall December 29, 2013 Lewis– APUSH "There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home", repeated Dorothy. A young girl trying to go back home to Kansas after a cyclone lands her and her dog, Toto, in the Land of Oz. There Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the TinMan, and the Cowardly Lion who are all in need of something that is considered important to them; a brain, a heart, and courage. Along the way, they have to travel to Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz, directed by the Good Witch of the North, especially for Dorothy to get back home. However, Dorothy and the gang run into problems with the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants Dorothy's ruby slippers (which was originally the Wicked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the farmers from the West blamed their problems on the wealthy and industry. Later on in the text, Dorothy meets the Good Witch of the North. The Good Witch represents a Northern electorate who had supported populism. The Good Witch sends Dorothy to go to the Wizard of Oz, down the yellow brick road to Emerald City, who has the power to send her back to Kansas. The Good Witch also gives Dorothy the silver shoes, which also serves as protection. This can relate to the Bimetalism vs. Gold Standard. I say this because Dorothy shoes are silver and she is sent to go down the yellow brick road, which can be seen as gold bricks. This can be known as gold money. In this time, it was clear that silver vs. gold was important to the farmers involving the economy. The silver was supposed to be available for the working class, and would increase the amount of money for the working class. In the text, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion. The Scarecrow represents the western farmers, and how their hardships and troubles from inflation caused them to have doubts and problems with their money. The Tinman represents the American worker who mostly has populist views. He also represents how the worker felt dehumanized and was helpless. In addition to this, the Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on him that every time he swung his axe, he would chop a piece of him off. This would make his body smaller, in relation to his work being minimized by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Wizard Of Oz By F. Frank Baum Essay The motion picture, The Wizard of Oz was released by the studio Metro–Goldwyn–Mayer on August 12,1939. The movie was adapted from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" writings of L. Frank Baum in 1900 (Maltin 2015). The imaginary children's fable is recognized by the enduring musical score, the many idioms used: "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" and "Follow the yellow brick road" are phrases recalled in the movie (Wizard 1939). The fledgling Dorothy character and dog Toto traverse a pathway in Kansas and in Munchkin–land while eluding malicious barriers to the discovery of Oz. The characters encountered on the journey epitomize the traits needed to realize the goals sought: knowledge, emotion and courage. The movie exhibits evil and ethical, greed and deceit and how dreams of the future can supply the motivation to endure the horrors encountered. The original 1900 manuscript by Baum envisioned the evolution of the Nazi party and the persecution of the Jews in 1933 and is visualized in the children's motion picture The Wizard of Oz. The opening of the movie, a terrified Dorothy and Toto runs down the bumpy dirt pathway glancing over her shoulder three times she stoops to inform her pal "She isn't coming yet, Toto" (02:05). She fears the mean and evil powerful Almira Gulch, who has threatened the dog with its excursion into her yard. Safe at the farmhouse Dorothy explains to anyone that will listen that Miss Gulch is a threat; family and farm–hands disregard her words. The scene ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Examples Of Archetype In The Wizard Of Oz The Wizard of Oz Archetypes Everyone is unique in their own way but we are all placed under a general characterization or archetype. In the movie, The Wizard of Oz, each character is placed under a specific archetype. For example Dorothy is the maiden, Glinda the good witch of the north is the mother, the wicked witch of the west is the villain, the lion is the child, and the tin man is the father. Each character has a certain type of personality that makes them a certain archetype. Dorothy, the main character, is the maiden because she is a very innocent and pure person. She's very worrisome when she says, "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Dorothy expresses worry when she says this because she doesn't know where she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She's the villain because she opposes anything that Glinda, Dorothy and her friends do. She desperately wants her sister's slippers back that Dorothy wears during the movie and will do anything to try and get them. The wicked witch of the west said, "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!" This shows that the witch is the villain because she told Dorothy that she's going after her and will get her slippers at some point in the movie. The witch follows Dorothy and her friends throughout their journey down the yellow brick road, she taunts them their whole way to see the wizard. The witch is the villain because she truly opposes everything that Dorothy does and wants to keep her from going home to Kansas with her sister's slippers. The archetype, child, is the cowardly lion. The lion is very childish and longs for help from others. The lion said, "I do believe in spooks. I do believe in spooks. I do. I do. I do. I do." The lion is very timid towards others and is very scared of almost everything around him. The lion acted tough when he first met Dorothy, the scarecrow, and the tin man, but shortly after that he showed that he was scared and a cowardly lion. The lion is cowardly because he wants to act tough because of whom he is, but he is very scared of everything around and wants to gain courage from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Wiz Analysis I did the music video on the movie The Wiz. The Wiz is a Broadway musical based on a girl named Dorothy. The movie focuses on Dorothy and her friend's adventure to go and see the Wiz. Dorothy is a school teacher and she really liked her life just the way it was. Her aunt Em encouraged her to start teaching high school instead of Kindergarten. However, Dorothy liked teaching Kindergarten and she's not a big fan of change. She liked her life just the way it is. Her aunt Em encouraged her to broaden her horizons but she just didn't want to. After Dorothy ends up in the Land of Oz she wants to go back to her home in New York. She's really confused and doesn't really known what's happening. The only way for her to get back home is for her to go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dorothy and the Scarecrow invite the Tinman to come with them to see the Wiz and ask for a heart. Afterwards, they meet the Lion who doesn't have any courage. Soon enough, Dorothy tells the Lion to go with them so that the Wiz can give him courage. Dorothy and her friends finally got to Emerald City. They finally got to see the Wiz and he told them that he would not grant any of their wishes unless she killed the wicked witch of the West. Dorothy and all of her friends were really disappointed. Eventually, Dorothy and her friends went to see the wicked witch of the West and the witch was very mean to them. The witch really wanted Dorothy's slippers but she refused to give them to her. Dorothy is starting to get discouraged because the witch seemed to be more powerful than she was. The witch began to torture the Lion and the Tinman. Dorothy decided to give her the shoes because she didn't want to see her friends being tortured anymore. The Scarecrow told Dorothy to pull the fire alarm. After Dorothy pulled the alarm water started pouring down everywhere. The witch was allergic to water and she dies after getting drenched with water. Afterwards, everyone in Emerald City is freed from the wicked witch of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Summary Of Elmira Gulch In 'Wizard Of Oz' A gulch can be defined as a deep, sheer cleft or abyss often occupied by an extreme threat. Elmira Gulch in "Wizard of Oz" is the antagonist, constantly pushing Dorothy off course. She represents her name in a way that shows her lack of life and the evil within her. Elmira Gulch represents her name within the film through her actions. The moment Dorothy enters Oz, Miss Gulch's death is signified by the witch who was crushed beneath the house. The significance of Elmira Gulch's death represents her name, because her death marked the point at which the action of attempting to fill the void within her by tormenting Dorothy would occur. • 13. The Film Analysis Of The Wizard Of Oz The Wizard of Oz is a film whom plot is based on a sad and lonely Kansas farm girl, whose name is Dorothy. Dorothy is unhappy and dreams of a better place without hatred toward her dog Toto from a hateful neighbor spinster, so in that case Dorothy plans to run away to escape the unhappy life she lives. During her plan to run away a terrifying tornado strikes her town and Dorothy is struck on the head and transported to a falsity land called "beyond the rainbow" where she interacts with people that are from her real life but are transformed into magical characters. On the the yellow brick road Dorothy meets friends who on the way overthrow the Wicked Witch of the West. Each one of the friends including Dorothy have a heart desire of what they want and soon were granted with it from the Wizard of OZ. At the end Dorothy was enabled to return to Kansas her home. "The shot" in the film The Wizard of Oz established many details throughout the film. The scene when the Wicked Witch of the West appeared to find her sister The Wicked Witch of the East dead under the house with her legs sticking out and her feet that had the red sparkling shoes is a great example of establishing a shot. It established the details, the time, and the place of the film. While the witch is ranting about the heals gone missing and being placed on Dorothy's feet they create a "close–up" shot on the Wicked Witch of the West when she says, "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too." • 15. What Is The Wiz Compared To The Wizard Of Oz In 1939 one of the most memorable film was released, The Wizard of Oz. In 1978 The Wiz, an urban reimaging of the exemplary novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz put an African American vibe to a film. The novel turned into films follows the adventures of Dorothy, a girl who embark on an adventure in strange and fantastical land just wanting to go back home. In this essay I'm going to plot each film and compare the main character of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the Wiz and discuss how the design and music differ from each film. Plot I In the Wizard of Oz Dorothy lives in Kansas with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Miss Almira is bitten by Dorothy's dog, Toto. • 17. Wizard of Oz Narrative Report Assignment 1 – Narrative Report Story and Plot In a narrative film, a plot is considered all visible and audible elements present in a film, in essence the film in its entirety including nondiegetic images. In The Wizard of Oz, the plot begins with Dorothy (Judy Garland), a young farm girl from Kansas who dreams of escaping to 'somewhere over the rainbow' without troubles and torment for her dog Toto from a horrible neighbour Miss Gulch (Margaret Hamilton). During a tornado she is hit on the head and is transported to the World of Oz where she meets characters transformed from her Kansas life at home, meeting three companions who are all missing a quality that they wish to gain. She goes on a journey with them all to see the Wizard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oz is shot in bright and vibrant colours, which pertains to the idea of a magical land that appears very opposed to the dull and colourless real world of Kansas, assisting on taking the viewer on the journey 'over the rainbow'. This goal oriented plot in The Wizard of Oz follows a pattern of development that encourages the viewer to expect Dorothy to reach her desired goal. The viewer then sees each action of Dorothy's to be a progress of this desire to go home to Kansas. The film is brought to a climax when the Dorothy and her friends return to visit the Wizard after destroying the Wicked Witch of the West, of which he had requested. During this scene it is revealed that the Wizard is in fact a fraud, an ordinary but clever man who although as no powers, still fulfils the expectations of the story. He gives Scarecrow, Tinman and the Cowardly Lion the answers they seek by giving them the self confidence to recognise they had the qualities which they were looking for all along and he presents them with some token external symbols to represent this. In the final scenes and formal resolution of the film, which is shot in sepia tones creating a parallelism with Kansas on the opening scene, Dorothy attains her goal of returning home, waking up in her own bedroom surrounded by friends and family from her real life, therefore fulfilling the ... • 19. The Wizard Of Oz Character Analysis Cheris Kramarae once said, "Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings." According to Merriam–Webster, Feminism is defined as "the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities" The ideal female character is normally depicted as weak and vulnerable in comparison to men, but truly it is not the case. In L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, the main character, Dorothy, is portraying the role of an independent female as opposed to the typical damsel in distress. She unintentionally kills the Wicked Witch of the Eest and is praised as a heroine in the land of Oz. Dorothy is the complete opposite of the ideal female character. She is portrayed as self–reliant, strong and peaceful all throughout the story. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When captured by the Wicked Witch of the West, she orders a pack of great wolves to tear her and her companions to pieces. The Wicked Witch of the West says, "one is of tin, one of straw; one is a girl and another a Lion. None of them is fit to work, so you may tear them into small pieces" (Baum 87). Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion are all depicted as weak and unable to work. However, this completely defies how Dorothy is portrayed as powerful and self–reliant throughout the story. The witch labels her as just a girl, when she really is much more. She is going on this journey enduring several obstacles and companions to finally get herself back home to Kansas. This shows her true dedication and care for not only herself, but others. Lastly, Dorothy shows her assertiveness and courageousness when she kills the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy cries, 'You are a wicked creature'...This made Dorothy so very angry that she picked up the bucket of water...dashed it over the Witch, wetting her from head to foot... The witch cries, 'In a minute I shall melt away" (Baum 96). Dorothy defies all odds as she rescues and saves herself, yet again. She shows her independence and courageousness as she kills the Wicked Witch of the West and frees the people again. She defies the ideal helpless damsel in distress and creates a strong independent female character that is the basis of this story. Without Dorothy as the heroine of this story, the land of Oz would be doomed. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Imagine a child that was born with a bright green tint to their skin and had razor sharp teeth. This happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical "Wicked," by Winnie Holzman, was based on this novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. "Wicked" draws in many people because they can relate to the feeling of being ostracized the way Elphaba was. In the 21st century, musicals have progressed along with technology due to the use of new special effects in musicals today. The New Millennium marks the beginning of the 21st century. On September 9th 2001 one of the most horrific events had occurred (History.com Staff). Al–Qaeda terrorists had taken over four planes. The terrorists had purposely crashed two of the planes into the Twin Towers. A third plane had then been crashed into the Pentagon. The first plane had crashed at 8:46 in the morning. The plane had crashed between the 80th and 110th floor. 18 minutes after the first crash another plane had crashed into the south tower near the 60th floor. Fifteen minutes later the south tower collapsed causing a huge cloud of dust to arrive. At 10:30 a.m. the second tower collapsed. 3000 people were killed in this disaster (History.com Staff). It is a day America will never forget. One thing that has really progressed in the 21st century is the technology. In 2005 YouTube was launched (FutureTimeline.net). It ... • 27. How Is Glinda A Wicked Witch The Wicked Witch of the West's hunger for power is another big part of her character. She spends much of her time in both the film and the book wanting the ruby slippers, or in the case of the book, the silver shoes, because of the powers they possess. One might also speculate that an additional reason the Witch was so mad at Dorothy when her sister was squashed, is because the witch felt threatened by this newcomer that is apparently powerful enough to kill a witch. If the Witch of the West did, in fact, feel threatened by Dorothy, it would certainly explain why she felt the need to continually assert her dominance over Dorothy and threaten her. Even in her character design, the Wicked Witch of the West denies femininity. As Rushdie points ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is clearly important and the one in charge of the farm back in Kansas, but even she depicts at least one of Ellmann's feminine stereotypes. As she has little screen time, there is not much we know about Aunt Em's character. It is clear, however, that Aunt Em depicts the stereotype of piety. One of her most iconic lines is "for twenty–three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you, and now, well, being a Christian woman I can't say it," and, as Rushdie points out in his essay Out of Kansas, this is the only mention of religion in the entire film (Wizard 0:10:07–0:10:13)(Rushdie 6). Additionally, Dorothy tends to think of Aunt Em in a saint–like light, clearly looking up to her and even recalling the time Aunt Em nursed Dorothy back to health (Wizard 0:14:14–0:14:18). Because we see very little of her, there is not much more we can say about Aunt Em's character in this light, but it is notable that such care would be given to ensure that a good female character would depict at least one of these stereotypes despite her lack of screen ... The first shot in this The Wizard of Oz scene is a wide shot of Munchkinland with a voluminous mass of red smoke taking focus. With the same camera angle, the munchkins run away from the mast of smoke and lay on the floor as the Wicked Witch of the West is revealed. The dark crimson of the smoke contrasts greatly with the happy hues of blue, green, and yellow that encompass the town. This signifies the great difference between the joy of the munchkins and the anger of the witch. There is then a close up shot of the witch which quickly cuts to a shot of a terrified Dorothy. • 61. Symbolism In Wicked By Gregory Maguire "One never learns how the witch became wicked, nor whether that was the right choice for her, is it ever the right choice? Does the devil ever struggle to be good again, or if so is he not a devil?" Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West tells the story of the green girl named Elphaba who grew up to become one of the most iconic evil characters in history. While telling her story, Maguire incorporates symbolism and similar senses of style, genre, and theme to give his words deeper meaning and to capture the essence of his characters. Born in Albany New York, on June 9, 1954, Gregory Maguire would soon become a very well– known and accomplished American novelist. Maguire was raised in a family of ... Maguire writes in an episodic style where he breaks his novels up into small standalone sections that jump through time. In Wicked he jumps from Elphabas childhood to her college years to her adulthood, which leaves large intervals of time that never are told. This creates a sort of enigmatic or mysterious character for Elphaba, which makes it more realistic since you can never know really know a person's full life story with all the ... • 69. Miss Gulch: The Wicked Witch Of The West In the movie, The wizard of Oz Miss Gulch/The wicked witch of the west, is the antagonist of the story line. Miss Gulch's name means she is a hateful and hideous person, because her name represents a deep cliff/abyss, or an extreme threat. The Wicked witch of the west is evil. When the Wicked Witch of the West shows up at Munchkinland all of the Munchkins tried to run/hide, because they are scared of her. This demonstrates that she is evil, because the munchkins knew that she terrorizes people, and they did not want to be her target. The wicked witch has no emotion. Instead of the wicked witch of the west showing emotion or grief for her sisters death, she goes straight to get the ruby slippers, because then she would behold the power ... • 73. Wicked: The Real Elphaba Essay In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum's novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as known as Elphaba). But in Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to those who do not even know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She could also go to the extreme trying to save animal civil rights because of what she believes in, even if it means to have no one to support her. She was coldly rejected when she tried to ask the Wizard for assistance, but ended revolting against him to save the remaining animals that were tortured and brutally killed. As you can tell, the image of the Wizard of Oz is not so welcoming compared to Maguire's novel versus Buam's novel. Elphaba plays a very extraordinary female role compared to a traditional female role Galinda (as known as Glinda). Glinda was mean, conceited, rude, sociable, pretty and popular woman in college, compared to Elphaba was ugly, an outcast, and unsociable with the students. Elphaba was able to attend school and later be friends with Glinda and Boq, usually Wicked Witch does not have many friends, and tends to be living in loneliness and dreadful life. Glinda attempts to make Elphaba and not be an outcast, but as a lovable Wicked Witch. It failed because of her blunt behavior and personality. Even though Glinda was mean and conceited in a way, she surpassed it with her beauty and social skills, while Elphaba was always criticized and look down at from the students. Glinda said, "Please, it is Galinda" and mocked her professor, Dr. Dillamond, "She could not bring herself to call him sir. Not with that horrid goatee and the tatty waistcoat that looked but from some public house carpet" (Maguire 66). In contrast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Oz The Great And Powerful Analysis Turning timeless classics into big–budget films is the new rage in Hollywood today. Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful is no exception. With numerous other competitors in the market, it failed to meet the bar as yet another film is added to the ever–growing pile of adaptations for L. Frank Baum's Children's novel. The beloved childhood movie of millions received a prequel packed with phony effects and boring one liners. Oz the Great and Powerful, well, not so great or powerful, provides itself as a prequel for the beloved 1989 film 'The Wizard of Oz'. It follows the story of con–man and rake, Oscar 'Oz' Diggs (James Franco), and his accidental trip to the magical land of Oz. Upon his arrival, he easily charms the beautiful and naive Witch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No brain, no heart, and no courage to exceed audience's expectations. Performances are meant to be compelling and engaging, and yet I was disappointed with the monotonous disaster presented instead. The cast lacked any energy or awareness of their characters throughout the film, making it seem as if they didn't want to be there. Franco's portrayal of a mischievous and clever con–man was lazy to the point I couldn't tell what Oz was feeling. Whenever he threw a smirk to any of the characters, it made me want to hide as he looked more like a creepy homeless man down the street than a bad–boy hero. On the same scale, Mila Kunis' attempt on being the symbolic 'Wicked Witch of the West' was beyond embarrassing. Cackling at every minute mixed with an innocent 'baby voice', it was bound to be a disaster from the start. The lack of 'wickedness' made me laugh at the witch, rather than scared out of my wits. Rachel Weisz alone delivered a stellar performance as the original Wicked Witch. By being terrifyingly wicked, she successfully gained the desired emotions from the audience. Watching her manipulate her sister Theodora to the 'dark side' really made the audience loathe her but entranced at the fluidity of her actions. Without Weisz, this movie would've been swept away by a tornado to a land where no one can ever find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
