Computer hardware
• What is computer hardware and how does it
work?
Computer hardware is any physical components
used in computing
Many computer components work together to
make up a computer
Computer hardware uses software and binary to
communicate to other hardware which allows the
components to work with each other
Computer hardware
• How is computer hardware developing?
Too put it simply, it is getting faster and
smaller
Motherboard
A motherboard
looks like this.
The mother board is the
centre part of the
Computer.
It holds the
Components and connects them together with a
series of circuits and chips . This is also helps power
each component
Hard drive(HDD)
• Hard drive is a very important Component.
• The hard drive stores most of the computers
information including the operating system and
all of your programs.
• Almost all computers have one or more.
case
• The computer's case hold all the components
• It has a USB Port and disk drive
• They sometimes have built in fans
Sound card
• The sound card is the main component for
sound also know as the audio card
• The input and output of audio signals to and
from a computer under control of the
computer programs.
• Most sound cards are integrated into the
motherboard with the video card
Disk drive
• A disk drive is a optical drive that
reads compact disks like DVDs and
CD
• The drive uses a laser light to read the
information on the disc
CPU (Central processing unit)
• The Central processing unit carries out the
instructions of a computer program, it performs the
basic input/output operations of the system.
• The power of a CPU is currently measured
In gigahertz (GHz) and are 64-bit
it ran faster
• Newer CPUs use multi cores, this means
There is more then one chip inside the processer
Graphics card
• The graphics card gives a video output to the
monitor
• They mostly use PCI,PCIe
and AGP slots to fit into
the motherboard but
most modern graphic cards are integrated into the
motherboard
• They use HDMI,DVI and VGA ports to connect to
the visual display device
Heat sink
• The heat sink cools the computer down so it
does not over heat
• It removes waste heat made by computer
components
• It keeps components within their safe
operating temperature
Heat extractor
• The heat extractor is for getting rid of waste
heat so the CPU will not melt or crash
Power supply
• The power supply in the computer provides all
of the different voltages your computer needs
to operate properly
• It converts AC voltage
from the mains into DC
voltage
RAM (random access memory)
• RAM is for running and loading applications
• RAM is also used for advance gaming and
graphics software
• It also a temporary storage device for
computer data
firewire
• FireWire is a method of transferring
information between digital devices,
especially audio and video equipment
• Firewire is 400 MB/s or 800 MB/s
• Not many peripherals use firewire, it is mainly
used for cameras and camera recorders

Computer software
• How is computer software made?
Software is made by a program such as java
script
A human writes this script which gives the
program a set of instructions for the
computers microprocessors
Computer software
• Some examples of computer soft
 A computers operating system (windows, Linux)
 A internet browser (Chrome, firefox)
Apps (Iphones, android devices)
 Social media (facebook, twitter)
 Video games (angry birds, Kingdom hearts)
Websites(http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/ ,
http://originalhampster.ytmnd.com/ )
Computer software
• What's in the future for computer software?
Software is being made easy to build ffor
everyone
Coding is being taught to a lot more people
and at lot more schools at an early age
Computer scientists and Human biologists are
working together to try and create technology
and software that can integrate with the
human body
Installing windows xp (software)
WINDOWS 7 USB compatibility
• Windows 7 is the first microsoft operating
system that allows installation from the USB
• The bios will allow a boot from USB which
when loaded with the windows 7 operating
system software will start a installation
• USB 3.0 is preferred version to use when
installing with USB because of the superspeed
transfer mode
Step 1:
• Insert the Compact disk into the computer
when it is off and then turn it on
• It will boot from the “CD” and it will run the
operating system files
Step 2: set up
• It will come up with this text
• Press enter to install and then press f8 to
agree with the licensing agreement
Step 3: partitions
• Click Enter to install the xp on a partition of
the hard drive
Step 4: formatting
• I recommend using the NTFS file system
because it is up to date it is quick
Step 5: personalisation
• First enter your name and operation
Enter your product key
Computer name and password
Date and time settings
Professional step up
• Choose typical settings because it does
everything for you
workgroup
• Assign a name for the workgroup
finish
• Now you have complete the set up and now
windows xp is fully installed
Windows 7 compared to
windows 8
Desktop and start screen
• The start menu is now a full a screen
• It now has tiles and apps like a windows
phone
Touch compatibility (user interface)
• Windows 7 had touch but it was not ideal
• Windows 8 has large tiles and apps that suit
touch
• Windows 8 was made for touch so it is on
windows tablets and phones
• Windows tablet surface uses it
Windows store (apps)
• With start you can now get apps and add
them to your new start screen
• There are a variety of apps for free or some
paid
• This is very similar to the chrome store
Security
• Windows 8 has added security that help
protect you from malware and other viruses
• With windows 7 you had to buy a third-party
anti-virus software that you needed to install
Back-up
• Windows 7 and 8 both have a back-up feature
• In windows 7 you had to do a Manuel back up
• Windows 8 is more of a advance system for backing up your
files
• Windows 8 has a “time machine” which acts like browser
history but for your files, so you can find files you have lost in
your history
Capabilities
• Windows 8 has the same capabilities as 7 but
windows has lots more apps that give
hundreds new of functions
• Windows 8 also supports touch
features Windows 7 Windows 8
App store Windows seven does not have an app
store
Windows eight has a large app store like
the windows phone
built in security Windows 7 has no built in security
software
Windows 8 has a built in “windows
Defender”
Back-up Windows 7 you have to manually back-up
Windows 8 has a “time machine” which
acts like browser history but for your file
Compatibility You can use a keyboard and a mouse.
Touch Can be used but it is not
recommended
Windows eight has been designed to
work with touch phones and tablets
So it works very well with touch
User interface Windows 7 is better for work use but
slightly more complicated for general
use
Windows 8 is great for personally use
because it is easy to use and
customisable but not recommend for
business use
How to download and install
a free anti-virus software that will
protect your software
• Here is the web address
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index

software will automatically preform a scan for
threats on the computer
• In the security settings you can change the
date and time of the scan
Step 9
Checking results of the scan
• I later checked the results of the scan to see if
there was any problems and there was none
• No malware was detected
The importance of antivirus software
• Why is antivirus software important?
• Antivirus software is very important because it protects
your computer from viruses that damage your computer
and its files
What happens to your files?
• Your files can be lost, shared or corrupted.
• They can be lost or deleted for ever
• They can be corrupted so they longer are readably
• Virus such as adware can share your information with
third party sources, they can share private information
such as passwords or bank details
Installing Skype (communication
software) for windows 7
Step one:
• Open your internet browser (internet explorer
/chrome)
• Search for “Skype download for windows 7”
Use this
website

• Click “get Skype for windows desktops “
Step 3:
• This page should appear and the download
should of started
Step 4:
• Choose you language
• I suggest that you untick these boxes
• Wait for Skype to install
Step 5:
• The Skype window should open
• If you do not own a Skype account then you
will need to make one so you can call people
Step 6
• We would then test Skype by calling someone
who is able to take a call
• We would configure a microphone and/or a
webcam and test it
