Expect the Unexpected and Emerge Stronger
During the past decade, we’ve seen economic volatility and disruption
escalate to arguably unprecedented levels. . . . For business leaders across the
world, “expect the unexpected” has become the mantra.
The only way forward is to build organisations that can survive and thrive
amidst disorder: organisations that are agile and adaptable, able to cope with
disruption and emerge stronger than before.

Wind, Candle, and Fire
Wind extinguishes a candle and energizes fire.
You want to be the fire and wish for the wind.
Likewise with randomness, uncertainty, chaos:
you want to use them, not hide from them.
The mission is how to domesticate, even dominate, even conquer,
the unseen, the opaque, and the inexplicable.

Antifragility
Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to
volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and
uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word
for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile.

Fragile, Resilient, Robust, and Antifragile
Antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness.
The resilient resists shocks and stays the same;
the antifragile gets better.
The fragile wants tranquility,
the antifragile grows from disorder, and
the robust doesn’t care too much.
Anything that has more upside than downside from random events (or certain
shocks) is antifragile; the reverse is fragile.

The Extended Disorder Family
Fragility and antifragility mean potential gain or harm from exposure to
something related to volatility. What is that something?
Simply, membership in the extended disorder family.
The Extended Disorder Family (or Cluster): (i) uncertainty, (ii) variability, (iii)
imperfect, incomplete knowledge, (iv) chance, (v) chaos, (vi) volatility, (vii)
disorder, (viii) entropy, (ix) time, (x) the unknown, (xi) randomness, (xii)
turmoil, (xiii) stressor, (xiv) error, (xv) dispersion of outcomes, (xvi)
unknowledge.
It happens that uncertainty, disorder, and the unknown are completely
equivalent in their effect: antifragile systems benefit (to some degree) from,
and the fragile is penalized by, almost all of them.

The Triad and The Map of the World
Antifragility and fragility are degrees on a spectrum.
Fragility and antifragility are part of the current property of an object.
Fragile and antifragile here are relative terms, not quite absolute properties.
Antifragility is relative to a given situation
(specific sources of harm or volatility, and up to a certain range of exposure).

Likewise with randomness, uncertainty, chaos: you want to use them, not hide from them. The mission is how to domesticate, even dominate, even conquer, the unseen, the opaque, and the inexplicable. All rights reserved. 14 Antifragility Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better. The fragile wants tranquility, the antifragile grows from disorder, and the robust doesn’t care too much. Anything that has more upside than downside from random events (or certain shocks) is antifragile; the reverse is fragile. All rights reserved. 16 The Extended Disorder Family Fragility and antifragility mean potential gain or harm from exposure to something related to volatility. What is that something? Simply, membership in the extended disorder family. The Extended Disorder Family (or Cluster): (i) uncertainty, (ii) variability, (iii) imperfect, incomplete knowledge, (iv) chance, (v) chaos, (vi) volatility, (vii) disorder, (viii) entropy, (ix) time, (x) the unknown, (xi) randomness, (xii) turmoil, (xiii) stressor, (xiv) error, (xv) dispersion of outcomes, (xvi) unknowledge. It happens that uncertainty, disorder, and the unknown are completely equivalent in their effect: antifragile systems benefit (to some degree) from, and the fragile is penalized by, almost all of them. Fragility and antifragility are part of the current property of an object. Fragile and antifragile here are relative terms, not quite absolute properties. Antifragility is relative to a given situation (specific sources of harm or volatility, and up to a certain range of exposure).
