A 17-year-old boy suffered cardiac arrest after being electrocuted. Bystanders began chest compressions and he was brought to the emergency room. In the ER, he was found to have ventricular fibrillation and CPR was performed, with return of spontaneous circulation achieved after 30 minutes. He was transferred to the ICU on a ventilator and medications to support his blood pressure. Over subsequent days, his condition improved and he was extubated on day 3 and discharged on day 6 in normal condition. Cardiac arrest is a major public health issue in India, with over 4 million cases per year and most occurring outside of hospitals with few receiving immediate CPR. An approximate number of 59,064,000 per year and 161,819 per day get SCA
70% of out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrests occur at home
90% of people who suffer out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest die.
Every minute’s delay in resuscitation of the cardiac arrest victim reduces the chance
of survival by 7%–10%.
Immediate help is received by only about 46% of people experiencing out‐of‐hospital
cardiac arrest.
Survival of victims doubles or triples if CPR is performed immediately by someone
nearby.
