1. TSIETSI MASHININI MEMORIAL LECTURE 2020
Virtual Lecture
The 5th annual Tsietsi Mashinini Memorial Lecture will be held virtually on
Saturday 13th
June 2020, organised by the Morris Isaacson High School
Alumni, Morris Isaacson High School administration and the Mashinini family.
We will be commemorating Tsietsi Mashinini this year under the cloud of the
coronavirus pandemic in South Africa and throughout the world. Under the
coronavirus disaster lockdown regulations and restrictions, not more than 50
people are authorised to congregate at any given venue presently.
The theme of the 5th
Tsietsi Mashinini Memorial Lecture is the scourge of
gender-based violence in South Africa. We have seen our grandmothers,
mothers, wives, sisters and daughters being abused, raped and in some cases
killed. The scourge has reached a point where it requires all members of the
public to come on board and join hands to fight the gender-based violence. It
is out of control and under lockdown conditions it continues even worse in our
houses and homes.
The first speaker, Professor Olive Shisana, will be defining what gender-based
violence is. What are its causes? And what can we do as society to eliminate
or minimise it?
How do we make this a priority and a permanent agenda item in the state of
the nation?
Professor Shisana will provide us with her proposals on what we can do as
communities and society.
The second speaker will be Ronald Lamola, the Minister of Justice and
Correctional Services. Minister Lamola will review how far the aspirations of
the youth of 1976 have been realised in addressing inequality and racism, with
emphasis on the role of the state in fighting gender-based violence today.
Minister Lamola will set out the role of the justice system in preventing and
eradicating gender-based abuse of women in South Africa. What can we the
public do to complement the efforts of the state?
We believe these virtual addresses will go a long way to help minimise and
stop gender-based violence in South Africa. Tsietsi Mashinini was known and
trusted by the community of Jabavu as a fighter against gender-based
violence. He used to be part of the team of students and teachers that
protected Morris Isaacson High School girls against gangsters, and he was
known at Morris Isaacson and Central Western Jabavu as a protector of
female pupils against male violence and gangsters.
2. Because the lecture will be a virtual lecture, there will be no hall attendance at
Morris Isaacson High School.
We will provide virtual email addresses for all those who wish to participate in
the memorial lecture.
Please indicate to me or to fellow members of the Alumni or the school if you
would like to be included.
