3. INDIVIDUAL PROTECTION
• Individual protection involves wearing of full
NBC Suit, gloves, respirator, over boots in a
chemical warfare threat or a chemically
contaminated environment
• The timely wearing of NBC protective clothing
and gas mask is of paramount importance for
safety of the individual
4. PURPOSE
• Issued to soldiers to ensure protection
• Effective defense against CBRNE agents depends
– Proficiency in the handling
– Proper use of protective equipment
5. Personal Protective Equipment
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) is the clothing
and respiratory gear designed to protect the health
care provider while he or she is caring for the
contaminated patient
• Using this equipment requires specialized
training; therefore, train appropriate personnel
in the use of this equipment before they need
to use it
6. TYPE AND SCALE OF EQPT
(IPE)
• RAG
• Canister
• NBCW suit
• NBCW gloves
• NBCW over boots
• NBCW water bottle
• NBCW haversack
• Detection paper (1 color)
• Indl decontamination kit
• Sulphadiazine cream
• Atropine eye drops
• Diazepam tab
• Combo pen (auto
injector)
8. BASIC KIT
• RAG
• Canister
• Detection Paper (one color)
• Modified Water Bottle
9. Individual Protective Clothing
(NBC suit)
• The design of special protective clothing is a challenge to
defense scientists and few important factors to be
considered are;
– Total body coverage required i.e. every joint/seam in
the clothing has to be fully sealed against the inflow of
chemical agents.
– The battle dress over garment be made of impervious
material to avoid permeation by chemicals.
– It should resist multiple chemical exposures and
material should not crack.
– Should provide continuous protection for hours
together.
10. NBC Suit
• The NBC suit provide protection for several hours
against liquid and vapour chemical agents
Description
– Suit is worn over one complete layer of clothing
– Outer layer is 100% cotton treated with
chemicals : liquid agents
– Inner layer is coated with fine charcoal:
vapour hazard
– The total wt of the suit is about 1.7KG
Wearing
– Trouser is put on first with the braces crossed
over the chest
– Smock is put on next
Use
- Threat of chemical attack
11. INDIVIDUAL PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING (Contd)
• Pre-requisites
– Acceptance by the soldiers that it can be easily worn
and does not cause heat stress or interfere with his
mobility/maneuvers
– Cost effective so that maximum number of troops
can be offered protection
16. SARATOGA SUIT
• The SARATOGA® systems
include not only CBRN but
also ballistic protection as
well as protection against foul
weather, fire and cold, but are
also comfortable to wear
17. NBC Mask / Respirator
• Main parts of the respirator
– Face piece
– Canister
• Function: Protect eyes, nose, throat, lungs and facial
skin
• Drill for Putting on the Respirator
– Stop breathing
– Remove the steel helmet
– Open the respirator haversack
– Put on face piece
• Besides the filtration of all harmful agents, the mask
had to fulfill a number of other requirements to be
efficient
• It had to be comfortable and allow for freedom of
movement, full vision, easy breathing,
communication, and durability
18. • Effective fit
• Filter / Canister
• Head movement
• Condensed vapors
removal
• Peripheral vision
NBC Mask / Respirator
28. Features of S 10 Respirator
• Features a butyl rubber face piece, with two round scratch-
resistant eyepieces, and an adjustable rubber head-harness
• A Speech Module is provided for direct speech and
microphone communications and the latter can be easily
interchanged with the 40mm thread filter fitting to
accommodate both left- and right-handed users without the
need for two different facepieces
• Special flat lenses that allow for the user's spectacles to be
worn whilst wearing the mask are available, and can be quickly
substituted for the regular issue type
• Flat lenses also allow the use of external optical devices such
as binoculars
• A drinking straw and valve tap is provided to allow the wearer
to safely drink from their canteen in contaminated
environments
29. Canister
• Filters out chemical and biological
agents
• Attached to side of face piece
• Changing Canister
– At the start of chemical warfare
– After 120 hrs in a chemical
environment
– Improper functioning of respirator
– Expiry of Canister’s shelf life
30. A typical disposable filter cartridge for a respirator: When
you inhale, air flows through the inlet on the left, through a
particulate filter, through an activated charcoal filter, through
another particulate filter (to trap charcoal dust) and through
the outlet on the right into the mask. When the particulate
filter clogs or the activated charcoal becomes saturated, you
must replace the cartridge.

32. NBC GLOVES
• Impermeable
• Made up of chloroprene or butyl
rubber
• NBC boots cover the existing
footwear
• No difference between left &
right
33. Butyl Rubber Gloves Features
• These butyl gloves exhibit the highest permeation
resistance to gas or water vapors of any glove
compound available today
• If needed, order all North butyl gloves with “Grip-
Saf” palm and fingers for a better grip under wet
conditions
• Available in several thicknesses and lengths to
provide the right glove for your application
• Excellent quality control
• ISO 9001 certified production facility
• Comes with cotton liners
34. Detector Papers
• Color change after exposure
• One Colour Paper
– Neutral color is gray
– On exposure turns NAVY BLUE
– Use: Attach to NBC suit
35.
36. Over Boots
• Worn over DMS boots and trouser
• Description
– Made of butyl rubber
– Stands approx 36 mm (14 in) high
– weight about 1x KG
• Use
– Worn for 24 hrs after gross
contamination
– Washed and dried every day
38. NAPS Tablets
• Nerve Agent Pre-treatment
Set
• These are only issued in time
of war where there is a
danger of being exposed to a
chemical attack
• These are a pre-treatment
tablet to help increase the
bodies defense against low
levels of nerve agent
• Taken one every 8 hours
39. LIMITATIONS OF IPE
Heat Exhaustion. Individuals working in protective gear,
may experience heat exhaustion (dizziness and fainting) at
any time especially during periods of high temperatures
Work Rate. Consideration of factors as mask breathing
resistance, increase in body temperature/solar heat,
psychological and physiological stress
Five Senses. Involving the senses or related functions such
an manual dexterity, visual acuity, and voice communications
will operate at varying decreased levels of efficiency
Personal Needs. Individuals after wearing IPE are
handicapped to certain personal needs such as eating,
caring for wounds, personal hygiene, sleep, and excretion of
body waste
