The Giver Town, -------Auto Message= Cannot reveal the town, message by the SPEAKER
Dear Speaker ,
You won’t imagine what happened today! I was patiently waiting for the lady
‘Chief Elder’ but she didn’t come for a long time.... I was really nervous
because i didn’t know what would happen... and suddenly she turned up and
could hear my heart beat and my palms were sweating.. She came and said “I
know, you are all concerned . That you feel I have made a mistake.” I was
kind of shocked because I had never heard somebody making this kind of
apology in many years... or maybe I would never hear again! After a while
she smiled...!.. And than heard her saying “I have caused anxiety and I
apologize to my community..” The community replied back instantly saying
“We accept your apology,” but i only said “W accep you-rrr apolog..” I
didn’t spoke it completely but yet I just did the lip movement because she
was staring at me while the community was apologizing. And after that.. she
called out my name saying “Jonas, I apologize to you in particular. I caused
you anguish.” I didn’t want to say anything but the words just came out.. “I
accept youu--r appoollg--y,” I said hesitantly..... Then the worst that I always
feared since the moment I was there came true.. she called me up to the
stage!!!! Again I could count my pulse rate, my heart beat was 5 times more
than normal! I moved my feet that felt weighted and clumsy, to go forward,
and up the steps and across the platform until I was beside her (shaking and
nervous) And she stated “Jonas has NOT been assigned,” and I couldn’t
make out what she was trying to say.. Why would she call me on the stage
just to say that I am not assigned?!?!?!? Then she went on “Jonas has been

selected.” I couldn't understand anything.. I was totally confused. What was
she saying? After a while she smiled at me and went on “Jonas has been
selected to be our next Receiver of Memory.” I couldn’t utter a word, and I
didn’t blink till my eyes were red and tears formed inside the eye.. Then I
recollected myself to listen to what she would say next.. “We have had our
current Receiver for a very long time,” she went on saying. I looked up in
her eyes as she was staring at one of the Elders. Then came the harsh words
for the previous Receiver “ We failed in our last selection,” which meant
that he hadn’t done enough for the committee. She firmly said “It was ten
years ago, when Jonas was just a toddler. I will not dwell on the experience
because it causes us all terrible discomfort.” Well thats all I remember from
that because it was a really long speech and boring lectures... I am REALLY
happy today!
