WHO KILLED ALASKA
#16 - MIRROR MEMORIA PART 1
written by
Cameron Cooper LeBrun
DENVER [narrator]
Welcome to the season 2 finale. This episode contains significant depictions of head trauma and
brain damage. Before we get started, I thought you should know that even when this episode gets
scary, you are still safe. Check the bottom of the description for a full list of content warnings.
And if you get scared, just imagine we’re all holding hands. A big kumbaya.
2
DENVER [narrator]
It’s a stale-air night in the pitch-black early hours of Tuesday, July 11th. One moment, I’m in the
hospital waiting room, until… well…
DREAM. ALL NON-DIEGETIC/SIMULATED.
VOICE
I’m busy. I’m watching me hands shake.
DENVER
Where am I?
VOICE
You’re busy. You’re watching your hands shake.
DENVER [narrator]
That’s what I remember of my dream.
WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. LATE NIGHT/EARLY MORNING.
NURSE 2
Mr Denver?
DENVER WAKES with a start.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
I’m awake.
3
DENVER
—Busy! What? I fell asleep. What do you need?
NURSE 2
Was Boo anywhere near a lake when he dropped?
DENVER
You said a lake?
NURSE 2
Yes.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
The nurse is hovering over me. Why is she asking about a lake?
DENVER
No. No lake. We were by the viaduct. Why do you need to know if he was near a lake?
NURSE 2
So Boo is still unconscious— he’s not asleep, he’s in a coma. But he’s talking about a lake— Has
he ever mentioned being afraid of drowning?
DENVER [narrator] (unison)
I think out loud. How can he talk if he’s in a coma?
DENVER (unison)
How can he talk if he’s in a coma?
NURSE 2
That is something we are looking into.
4
DENVER [narrator]
And why is she gripping her own hand so hard?
NURSE 2
Okay, thank you.
DENVER
You can’t walk away— how is it a coma if he’s talking? Someone has to explain to me…
NURSE 2
His brain activity is low. He shouldn’t be talking. Is there something wrong with him?
DENVER
What?
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
And I can’t sleep. I go back to watching my hands shake.
DENVER [narrator]
In the hospital waiting room. How much have you waited for someone who doesn’t even want
you around? How many hours? How many hours is 24? Did I wait a long time, do you think? Is
24 hours a long time? (pause) Let’s go back. How did this happen?
BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. DAY. SUMMER.
Car is in motion. Alice is in the back.
5
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
It’s fifteen hours ago: July 10th, a sunny Monday of the new summer. Boo wakes up after a night
of choppy rest and meets with Suspect 5, aka—
BOO
Jo.
Boo’s ringtone: [“Fuck You Kyle.”]
JO
What? (separately) Emma’s calling you.
BOO
Hang up. I gotta tell you something.
A button is pressed. Ringtone over.
BOO
(yawning) I thought I blocked her.
JO
I’m glad you’re finally cutting her out. She’s really problematic. It’s a left. IT’S A LEFT!
BOO
I know! I’m taking a different route. I’m just avoiding the pond!
6
JO
Oh.
BOO
Don’t you ever get new phobias?
JO
No?
BOO
(yawning) I gotta tell you something.
JO
About what? What the fuck— why’re you acting serious? BRO, you’re turning onto the
highway!
BOO
I know! I’m taking a different route! So Alaska’s been dead for four years.
JO
It’s rush hour! Go straight!
BOO
I CAN’T! We’d go by the bay!
JO
Sweetie! What’s wrong with the bay!?
BOO
Water is fucked up!
7
JO
Water you talking about?
BOO
It hides things and it’s like what’s in there? Alright? I’ve been trying to get that shit handled for a
bit now.
JO
This is gonna take forever…
BOO
But I didn’t start the investigations after he died, right? I started investigating for a reason, and
it’s a reason I didn’t tell you.
JO
You talked about it on the podcast. I read the episode descriptions.
BOO
Yeah so two years ago, I got into a car crash and my car mirror broke off, so I saw my reflection,
and the guy who’s in the mirror told me my brother’s gonna come back if I solve his death.
Jo shifts in her seat.
JO
Can you stop acting weird?
BOO
I’m not acting weird!
8
JO
You are, you’re doing that thing you’ve been doing for months.
BOO
I’m a person, I’m not acting anything! Do you STILL not believe me or something? I’ve been
talking about Alaska coming back for a long time and it never came up with us! My reflection
talks to me! It’s in the first couple episodes!
JO
Hey Boo, you said you’re afraid of water?
Simult: Jo takes a big sip from her water bottle until her cheeks are filled.
BOO
Not exactly afraid.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
And now Jo takes a long sip of her water. And she spits all over Boo.
Jo spits water all over Boo.
BOO
FUCK! What the fuck, Jo!? What the fuck!?
Car swerves.
9
JO
AH!
DENVER [narrator]
As it turns out, Boo’s fear of water actually DOES include bottled water. Later on:
BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. NIGHT. SUMMER.
BOO
Alice, I’m not acting weird.
Alice breathes easy.
BOO
People just keep saying that. How can something I choose be out of character? I don’t HAVE a
character. It is just, like, you name something, you name a rock Boo, and all of a sudden Boo the
rock must love soccer and no other sport or else the soccer fans call it mental illness. I’m
basically a person, and I’m not some rock! Alice, how can I be acting weird?
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
And then Boo TRIES to sleep.
CUT TO LATER.
BOO
UGH!
10
Alice yelps in surprise.
BOO
I’m not weird!
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
He doesn’t. And he tries to sleep again, at which point we get this recording:
CUT TO LATER.
BOO
(asleep) I’m stuck at the bottom… The lake, the lake, memoria…
Alice whimpers.
Boo wakes up.
BOO
AH! I can’t do this!
Alice barks.
BOO
What is she talking about! She got in my head! Everyone knows that my reflection is real!
Where’s the mirror—
11
Boo grabs a mirror in the dark. Throws aside the cloth covering it.
BOO
You’re real! You’re real. They can’t hear you but you’re real! Right? Exactly! Whether you’re
real or not, she can’t tell me that I can’t hear you right now. You can’t let psychoanalysis stop
you from connecting to other people’s thoughts, and their feelings, and their experiences and
WHAT, what, I’m trying to learn myself a lesson, okay? God, your face is weird. Is my mic on?
Boo fishes for his microphone.
BOO
The guy in the mirror says there’s a way I can show Jo I’m not C-R-A-Z-Y. Okay so now you go
— how can I prove I’m not being weird? (pause) He says I can buy a ghost box. Do they sell
those? I mean, I guess they would. So I can just get a ghost-hunting tool and they’ll hear you? I, I
don’t think I can sleep. Jo doesn’t believe me and, and now, I have to go get it now! Mirror guy,
are you gonna tell Jo that Alaska can come back?
Alice disagrees.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
I like to imagine Alice is saying, “You can just get it tomorrow.”
12
BOO
Alice, this is for the investigation! Shh, please! I need her help too, okay, if I’m bringing back
my brother.
DENVER [narrator]
So Boo drives.
LATER.
Car is in motion.
BOO
(falling asleep) The lake… please…
Alice barks.
DENVER [narrator]
He’s found a nighttime-only ghost-hunting store on Yelp, run out of some guy’s basement.
LATER.
Car is in motion. Alice is barking.
Speaker phone rings for a moment. It’s picked up.
BOO
(projecting voice) Hi, it said I need a reservation to go in the store.
13
DENVER [narrator]
He goes to the only place in Roslyn he can find in the middle of the night.
ROSLYN HEIGHTS. EXTERIOR./BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. NIGHT. SUMMER.
BOO
Alice, I’ll be fine! I’ll be right back!
Car door shuts, leaving Alice and the microphone behind.
DENVER [narrator]
And Boo gets himself a ghost box.
LATER.
BOO
Alice, I got it!
Boo opens car door.
Alice barks.
BOO
I got it! I got the ghost box!
14
Boo scoops up the microphone. Closes the door. Alice barks.
BOO
It’s okay, puppy! The, the lake, where’s my phone! Jo, you’re not gonna believe this!
Boo starts to call Jo.
BOO
Jo! Jo, I got it! And the lake… please…
JO [voicemail]
You’ve reached Josephine Magaro! Hello! I’m so sorry I’ve missed your call, and I’ll be sure to
get back to you as soon as soon as I can!
BOO
I have it! Jo, I have it!
Boo clicks the on switch. Ghost box begins to make white noise.
BOO
SEE!? THIS IS PROOF! This is proof that I’M NOT ACTING DIFFERENT! I’VE BEEN THE
EXACT SAME FROM EPISODE ONE AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED! I DON’T
CHANGE! I’M TOO COMPLICATED! WHO EVEN NEEDS A NAME, JO! I’M a soul in a
lake.
15
DENVER [narrator]
That’s when Boo starts to fall.
A car, approaching.
BOO
The lake…
DENVER [narrator]
And I can’t get to him in time.
Somewhere down the street, a car door opens. It’s Denver.
DENVER [distant]
No! Stop!
Tires swerve. A horn is honked.
DENVER [narrator]
This is the story of how Boo Curtis came to face a traumatic brain injury.
16
HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
Boo struggles to wake.
A “blurred” ambience aligns into the sounds of a hospital room.
BOO
Where are goggles?
NURSE
Give me just a second, I’m working with another patient here.
BOO (interrupting)
Where are goggles!?
NURSE
Give me just a second.
BOO (interrupting)
Where are goggles!?
Simult: Nurse approaches.
NURSE
What’s the last thing you remember?
BOO
Where are goggles!?
17
NURSE
Goggles?
BOO
Goggles! Have goggles. Give the goggles.
NURSE
All of your things are in this drawer here if you can just give me a moment.
The nurse goes to open the drawer.
BOO
Look at the… Stop looking at… what’s the word? M-E?
NURSE
I’m not looking at you, sir. Here they are.
Brings Boo’s belongings, including goggles.
NURSE
These are all of your things. Do you know where you are right now?
BOO
That’s the Allll— no, ghost box. Am… forgetting something? Hold on… have to think.
NURSE
Do you know what year it is?
18
BOO
Of course… do. Hold on, need to… Give the ghost box.
She does.
NURSE
What year is it?
BOO
Give a second.
Boo clicks the switch of the ghost box. Static.
The ghost box is going through different channels of the radio.
BOO
It’s you, right? Are you the guy from the mirror?
19
THEME SONG STARTS
DENVER [narrator]
Welcome to Who Killed Alaska: Detective Files.
BOO
This is Who Killed Alaska: The Adventures!
DENVER [narrator]
I’m a private investigator looking for the killer.
BOO
And I’m the regular guy who’s gonna stop him.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
Previously on Who Killed Alaska!
SHAY [clip - WKA3]
Alaska, Jeremy, Bobby, and Boo were all escorted to St. Francis Hospital with the help of the
police.
LOGAN [clip - WKA4]
First, we were in front of Alaska’s dying body, and I said that there was someone in the woods.
So I ran out and chased them, and I got shot in the ankle. And then I limped back in time to get
picked up by the ambulance, and I end up strapped into one of the extra seats.
DENVER [clip - WKA12]
Boo’s been facing away from the mirror. I forgot that he hates mirrors. He thinks his reflection is
out to get him.
20
BOO [clip - WKA2]
My reflection talks to me. And I’m avoiding him.
BOO [clip - WKA13]
People keep saying I’m acting weird.
JO [clip - WKA11]
Is he acting weird today?
BOO [clip CONTD. - WKA11]
No!
BOBBY [clip - WKA11]
Stop being weird, Boo!
BOO [clip - WKA11]
Naw, I am being weird.
BOO [clip - WKA12]
I’m just saying things and doing things. How am I acting like anything?
BOO
And now, it’s time for the new episode!
DENVER [narrator]
Welcome back, bud.
BOO / DENVER [narrator]
This is Who Killed Alaska.
THEME SONG ENDS
21
WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
[Melancholic music.]
DENVER [narrator]
Me and everyone who cares about Boo Curtis are sitting in the waiting room of St Francis
Hospital— the same hospital where Alaska died in his bed, 4 years ago. And in between one
Bobby going up to complain about the wait, and all the headaches from the noise and the stress
and the cleaner’s smell—
NURSE 2
Only two visitors at a time.
BOBBY
Who’s going?
HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
DENVER [narrator]
—we don’t know that Boo is awake— now undergoing speech and swallow tests, and being
asked about his—
NURSE
—allergies?
BOO
No. But um, dog is lactose intolerance.
22
NURSE
You said your dog is lactose intolerant?
Nurse types answer into computer.
BOO
Yes, and um. You know how, people’s periods sync up? It’s like, our rhythms echo each other
and body has contact lactose intolerance because love dog Alice.
NURSE
Um— Okay?
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
Fortunately, Alice has been left with a nearby resident who volunteered to look after her until
Boo’s return from the hospital. She wasn’t easy to console. She tried so desperately to climb into
that ambulance with Boo.
Door opens.
NURSE 2
Boo, you have visitors.
NURSE
Ohhh, that’s exciting!
23
EMMA
Um.
NURSE
Why don’t you two come in, I’m just gonna have a little talk with him if you don’t mind.
NURSE
Do you have any dietary restrictions?
EMMA
The monitor is blocking the door.
NURSE
I can move that for you.
Nurse walks over.
Moves the wheeled respirator machine, then locks the wheels in place. Closes door.
EMMA
Hi.
BOO
Hey Emma. You’re here. Wow, thanks for coming.
EMMA
Yeah, of course…
JO
Hey biiiiiiitch! Boo Boo Boo Boo Boo Booby how you doin, Boo?
24
BOO
Hey. Today not Boo, by the way.
JO
What?
BOO
Don’t call “Boo.” Avoiding labels right now, including name. Trust, it’s doing a lot for.
Pause.
JO
Gotcha.
NURSE
Okay, I’m noticing we don’t have a primary care physician. Do you have a primary care
physician?
BOO
No.
NURSE
Okay. How’s the pain by the way? Scale of one to ten?
BOO
Maybe eight.
25
NURSE
Alright. I’m gonna get you something stronger and I’ll be right back. Make sure he stays relaxed,
ok, his brain is recovering and the last thing we want is him getting stressed.
JO
Okay— we can do that.
NURSE
I know you can.
BOO
So this is the hospital where Alaska died… kinda crazy…
Nurse leaves through door.
BOO
Need to get out of here.
EMMA
I’m sorry.
BOO
No, need to get out of here! Need to solve Alaska’s death and need your help. Pass the black
thing, the ghost box.
EMMA
Boo you can’t work on the mystery right now. Your brain is injured, you’re healing.
26
BOO
Don’t say Boo! Pass the ghost box! Show you.
JO
I’m not dealing with him! I’m not, I’m not!
BOO (unison)
Don’t look at— (stops himself)
EMMA (unison)
This is your vacation! You’ll solve it better after you heal!
BOO
It’s all good. It’s just overwhelming because something is missing, nobody knows what it is, and
— talked to reflection— Everything’s fine. It’s just important, need to solve Alaska’s death.
EMMA
Should we get a nurse?
BOO
Can do it, can do this, the, the, the guy in the mirror’s gonna kill! Kill— kill M-E. The guy in the
— Gonna die. Jo. Jo. Gonna die.
JO
Excuse me?
EMMA
Did your reflection hurt you?
BOO
No. Pass the black thing, Emma. Let show you.
27
Emma passes Boo the ghost box.
EMMA
Show me what?
BOO
And we need a mirror.
EMMA
I can use my phone.
BOO
That’s probably fine.
Emma takes out her phone, switches to camera.
BOO
Emma. Jo. You’re gonna meet reflection.
Emma stammers.
EMMA
How?
Boo clicks the on switch. Ghost box begins to make noise.
28
BOO 2
Hey, what’s up. How’s it goin. I’m Boo.
EMMA (unison)
AH! FUCK OFF!
JO (unison)
It’s fake! Emma, cut it, this is pre-recorded—
BOO 2
You’re loud, ok? This is a hospital.
JO
Idiot! My cousin’s boyfriend did this last week!
JO
He puts a speaker down and plays sounds! Emma! Emma, it’s a prank!
BOO 2 (unison)
It’s not pre-recorded if I’m talking to you.
BOO (unison)
It’s real.
JO (unison)
Don’t react! Don’t react! Don’t react! Don’t react!
BOO 2
I’m responding to you.
BOO
Yeah.
29
BOO 2
I, me, my, mine. He can’t form a sentence but I can.
JO (unison)
How’re you— how’re you!?
BOO (unison)
Look, they hate you. That’s cute.
BOO 2
Kill yourself.
BOO
Kill yourself.
BOO 2
Kill yourself.
BOO / BOO 2
Kill yourself.
EMMA
I think I need to be checked into the hospital?
BOO 2
Kill yourself.
Jo starts laughing and crying.
30
JO
This isn’t real!
EMMA
No way! It’s not real at all!
BOO
Guys, this is not the weirdest shit that’s happened to us. Alright, this is a bit much—
JO
(laughing) Emma, I fucking hate you—
EMMA
(laughing and crying) That’s fair!
JO
(laughing) But I’m so actually glad I can look over and you’re, like, also real!
EMMA
(laughing and crying) Yeah!
BOO
They’ve actually gone crazy.
BOO 2
You hate that word.
BOO
Kill yourself.
BOO 2
Emma! Jo!
31
JO
(coming down) I don’t think I can deal with two of them…
Strange barks and growls come from the ghost box. Jo and Emma go quiet.
BOO 2
I’m gonna say something. (pause) Your “friend” is permanently damaged. Okay? He was 22, he
was at his intellectual prime, aside from what weed was doing to his memory—
BOO
That’s not true.
BOO 2
—and yeah, Denver was right, he was a force to be reckoned with. Ditzy, yes, like he thinks trees
can hear you, and sometimes he throws forks at people because when his brain enters that
conservation state, he can’t think three seconds into the future.
EMMA
(in amazement) You really are talking to us.
BOO 2
But he was also a chess-player. It’s a cliche, but Boo really did process the world in tactics: he
had a system that he kept hidden. He was teaching lightning to strike twice in there. But then he
dropped on the asphalt like a fucking idiot and his parietal lobe dribbled against his skull. The
floor gave him brain damage. Basically, I’m gonna take over his body.
32
EMMA
Why?
JO
I’m gonna climb out this window. Nobody’s even gonna notice.
BOO 2
He has 48 hours to solve who killed Alaska. If he doesn’t solve Alaska’s death, I’m going to take
over his body.
EMMA (unison)
Why would you do that?
BOO 2 (unison)
He has 48 hours. BECAUSE HE’S STUPID! Because he’s useless! He had two years— TWO
YEARS to solve Alaska’s death and he’s done NOTHING. Hey at this point he’s hopeless
because he’s brain dead—
BOO
Not brain dead.
BOO 2
—but I’m giving him a two day grace period, for Alaska. Boo never even wanted to live. But say
Alaska comes back. I’m never gonna take a brother away from Alaska. You don’t even know
what I’m saying, do you? You don’t listen to the fucking show.
JO
It’s— I don’t like hearing myself talk, okay?
33
EMMA
You can’t take a brother away from Alaska. Alaska’s dead.
BOO 2
He doesn’t have to be!
Silence.
BOO 2
Alaska would come back if Boo just solved this fucking mystery! But he barely told you that,
because he doesn’t tell you anything, because you’re NOT FRIENDS—
Boo shuts off the ghost box.
BOO
So that’s over. Pass the trash can. Gotta throw up.
34
WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
DENVER [narrator]
There’s something about sitting in a hospital waiting room that’s so dramatic and so boring.
I should also disclose that Bobby is no longer a conflict of interest. He was formally
terminated from the office in February for reasons the management would not like to make
public. Even I know very little about what happened. There were more issues than even I was
aware of. Anyway: There’s something about sitting in a hospital waiting room that’s so dramatic
and so boring.
BOBBY
If you combine it, they made the three of us wait 44 hours! That is a long
time!
DENVER
For sure.
BOBBY
I could make three vlogs and edit them in that amount of time. And sleep. Did you see that nurse
looked down her nose at me when I complained? Like she didn’t even sugarcoat. That is not how
you handle customer service. If they’re annoyed, then they should let us see Boo!
Bobby’s phone pings.
DENVER
Did you get a text?
35
BOBBY
Uhh, I’ll check.
BOBBY
Emma texted me. She says Boo’s okay. Oh man, I wanna see Boo so bad! Hey uh Logan. How
come you’ve been waiting so long?
Logan pops out an earbud, lets it hang. He’s listening to “One-Two.”
LOGAN
What’s up?
BOBBY
How come you’ve been waiting so long? Don’t you not like Boo that much?
LOGAN
What do you mean? Like— Uhh, I mean. I had some free time. Hold on, I’m getting a call.
Logan stands up.
LOGAN
Hello?
BOBBY
I think he secretly loves Boo.
36
DENVER
I don’t know about that.
Bobby’s phone pings.
DENVER
Is that from Emma?
BOBBY
I don’t think I got a text. Oh, I did actually! You are so right. Checking the “shiz.”
Pause.
BOBBY
This isn’t very good.
DENVER
Is it Boo’s condition, or?
DENVER [narrator]
That’s when I find out about the thing in Boo’s mirror.
NURSE 2
Only two visitors at a time.
DENVER [narrator]
And what it’s going to do.
37
NURSE 2
He’s fine. Only two visitors at a time.
DENVER [narrator]
And they won’t let us see Boo.
DENVER
Let’s step outside.
38
HOSPITAL. EXTERIOR. EVENING.
LOGAN
Lift up the phone— so, are you, you’re dying?
We hear the door swing open and slam shut behind.
BOO [speaker phone]
Let’s leave.
EMMA [speaker phone]
You can’t, Boo—
BOO [speaker phone] (unison)
Don’t call Boo. Have to solve Alaska’s death. Can’t do that stuck in the hospital.
BOBBY (unison)
(gritting teeth) I’m so… hungry…!
EMMA [speaker phone]
They have more tests to run on you! Your brain could be bleeding!
DENVER
How about I solve Alaska’s death for you, Boo?
BOO [speaker phone]
Is that Denver? Who brought him? Who did this? Gonna pop a loogie in your ear hole—
DENVER
I rode with you in the ambulance.
39
BOO [speaker phone]
That was YOU? Then who left these pretty flowers!?
DENVER
Also me.
BOO [speaker phone]
Motherfucker! Now these are trash flowers, for the trash!
BOO [speaker phone] (unison)
If you think you’re so nice then help get out of this hospital.
BOBBY (unison)
That thing… that thing… it can’t get away with this!
DENVER (unison)
Boo—
JO [speaker phone]
Boo, no. You are not leaving before the ct scan.
LOGAN
We can, just, we can leave. The ct scan doesn’t matter if Boo’s dying.
BOO [speaker phone]
Not Boo. Let’s get out of here.
JO [speaker phone]
No.
BOO [speaker phone]
Let’s go.
40
EMMA [speaker phone]
You can solve it here.
BOBBY
We have to kill that thing…! We have to—!
EMMA [speaker phone]
Just solve it in the hospital!
BOO [speaker phone]
Can’t! All can think about is Alaska’s bleeps— bleeps— beeps! Flatlining, in front of 1990s-
styrofoam-core-ass curtains. What am supposed to do?
LOGAN (unison)
You know that it’s lucky we’re in the same hospital that Alaska died in, right?
EMMA [speaker phone] (unison)
So I—
BOBBY (unison)
It makes me… starving!
BOO [speaker phone]
Guess… so…
LOGAN
Think about all the stuff you can investigate that we can’t normally do.
EMMA [speaker phone]
If you wanna investigate the hospital, I can think of a couple ways I can find us some records.
41
BOO [speaker phone]
This is silly! Right? Like what do we have here? We have staff, that probably weren’t there!
LOGAN
I guess, but the staff could know about Alaska even if they’re new. People talk. Co-workers talk.
EMMA [speaker phone]
Then let’s do that! Let’s try to solve who killed Alaska without you leaving the hospital. Okay?
BOO [speaker phone]
We could try. Actually, the risks are too—
JO [speaker phone]
Alright, we’re exploring the hospital! Let’s go, hang up, hang up. We have a time limit.
BOBBY
Wait, what’s the plan? I blacked out. What’re we doing?
EMMA [speaker phone]
Hold on, before we start. 3…
DENVER
Are you good?
EMMA [speaker phone]
C’mon, 3…
BOO / JO / EMMA [speaker phone]
2… 1… Murder.
BOBBY [speaker phone]
Murder…
42
DENVER [narrator]
Boo’s life is in danger. I need to go my own way.
43

BOO
We’re good.
AD BREAK ENDS
45
WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
We hear the door swing open and slam shut behind.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
He was unconscious for a full day and now he’s pushing through post-concussive syndrome to
solve a case that always made him stumble. I don’t think I can solve this case in 48 hours, but
when you’re late for your flight, you have to run. After all— I’ve already reminded myself that
today could be difficult. Today could be trying. And I’m prepared to be scared and overwhelmed.
Everything is worth a try, and a try is worth your confidence.
Simult: Logan catches up.
DENVER
Hi, my name is private investigator Finn Denver. I’m investigating a cold case homicide…
LOGAN
Aaaand I’m here to help.
DENVER [narrator]
Let’s see how much I can get away with.
BOBBY
I’m here too!
DENVER [narrator]
And let’s see if these guys get in the way.
46
DENVER [narrator]
I start making rounds interviewing staff. Meanwhile, the-man-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-called-
Boo gets his vegan hospital meal, a platter of pea casserole and cornbread with fake cheese. After
that, he’s finally switched to a wireless heart monitor. That box will hang on his neck and keep
track of his vitals.
HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
NURSE 2
Alright, you’re set. Now you’ll be able to go to the bathroom without any issue, ok?
BOO
(eating) Great! Thank you so much.
NURSE 2
Absolutely. Remember that if you experience any changes in your symptoms, you can just press
that button right here.
BOO
(eating) Ok!
She walks out the room.
Boo violently scrambles out of his seat.
BOO
(swallowing the last of his food) Time to investigate!
47
JO
Don’t you hurt yourself!
BOO
Let’s retrace Alaska’s steps.
They leave.
HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
EMMA
(whispering) You’re stepping on my foot.
DENVER [overlaid narrator]
Now Jo, Emma, and the-man-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-called-Boo line up duckling style to stroll
out of the room in a casual sneak. And Boo walks to the receptionist desk and starts the
conversation.
BOO
Hi. Have a question.
RECEPTIONIST
I have an answer. I might have an answer.
BOO
What happens when an ambulance drops somebody off?
48
RECEPTIONIST
Well. The ambulance would go to the ambulance entrance. Are you supposed to be here right
now?
BOO
Toilet broke. Need to find some place to poop. Let’s go guys! We poop together. Isn’t that crazy?
We’re really weird. Bye, have a normal day! Poop with your friends!
DENVER [narrator]
Jo, Emma, and Boo roam the halls until they find themselves a map.
ANOTHER HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
JO
I’m looking.
EMMA
Boo.
BOO
Don’t call “Boo.”
EMMA
Right. Why do you not like that?
(CONTD.)
49
BOO
Came up with a mental recovery routine, and it involves tricking the brain. To summarize it,
stress levels have been uncontrollable which is bad for, y’know, concussion recovery, and at first
felt really defeated because high stress levels are a hormonal response to injury which makes
them out of control. But realized, still intelligent and still cognitively have wits about, so! Using
thinking mind to trick feeling mind. Basically just framing as not a person so don’t have to
inherit the pressures of living up to a name like Boo.
JO
(regarding map) Got it. Here’s the ambulance entrance.
EMMA
Okay. Well. Look at this meme, you.
BOO
Very nice.
EMMA
It’s like. Um. Y’know when you really need to pinch a loaf?
BOO (interrupting)
So what direction is it?
JO
Just follow me.
50
NEAR AMBULANCE ENTRANCE. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
JO
Are we doing something?
BOO
Just let process. So Alaska would’ve shown up in an ambulance right outside, with Logan and
Bobby in there with him. Umm. Was there too— the guy, the guy you call Boo was there too!
EMMA
You were there.
BOO
Right, yes, Boo was there! Remember— he remembers. He was brought in a police car since the
ambulance was full. When we got to this entrance, Boo couldn’t see what was happening from
the back of the police car. We stayed here for like ten minutes, uh, and then we went to a
different entrance. Didn’t see what was going on, and— Hey, this is a different material. You
hear that, guys? The wall is just made up of a different brick from here on. This isn’t a design
choice.
EMMA
Does that have to do with Alaska?
BOO
Don’t know but it reminds of some shit… But that’s, that’s weird…
51
DENVER [narrator]
While Boo examines the wall, I’m bouncing from one staff member to the next. My hands are
shaking. I haven’t learned anything. But I should be grateful that they haven’t kicked me out yet.
HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
NURSE 4
I’m really sorry. I started working here last year, so I don’t really know anything.
DENVER
Oh! So this is all new! Oh ok!
NURSE 4
Yeahhh.
DENVER
Well thank you for your time. Really helpful.
NURSE 4
Of course! Hope it goes well, though.
DENVER
Yup. We’ve got this! Have a good night, ok?
NURSE 4 (unison)
You too.
DENVER (unison)
We might have to go through everyone in this hospital and I’m gonna lose track really soon. Do
you think there’s a way to get rid of Boo’s reflection?
52
LOGAN
I have no idea.
DENVER
I don’t know why I asked. None of us know.
BOBBY
Denver!
DENVER
Yes, Bobby.
BOBBY
My instincts are drawing me in that direction!
DENVER
To the… women’s health wing?
BOBBY
No! To the chairs over there. My instincts are kicking in… Those chairs are significant.
Denver walks over.
DENVER
These are weird chairs.
Denver pulls on a chair.
53
DENVER
These chairs are anchored to the wall with metal cords. You were right.
BOBBY
It’s! It’s overwhelming… I might throw up! My instincts…
DENVER
You don’t need to anchor furniture like this outside of tornado country.
LOGAN
Uh oh.
DENVER
What do you think, Jeremy? Is that a shrug?
LOGAN
It’s a shrug.
DENVER
Do you know why these chairs are anchored to the wall?
LOGAN
I might. I might not.
ANOTHER HALLWAY.
JO
Hi. My friend broke the toilet with his enormous dumpy. Where’s the bathroom?
NURSE 5
It’s down that hall, on the right.
54
JO
Thank you! And by the way!
NURSE 5
Yeah!
JO
Was the ambulance entrance renovated?
NURSE 5
It was. There was a storm a few years ago and that entryway got damaged.
JO
Ok, but how was that— why would the wall break in a storm? Was the brick already loose, or?
NURSE 5
A tornado broke down the doors.
BOO
Do you mean a hurricane?
NURSE 5
It was a tornado. It was a freak weather event. Like while a tornado was forming, it went inside
the building.
HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
LOGAN
You could say I was there. Because I was there. When the ambulance stopped and that one joker
was done strangling Alaska— (CONTD.)
55
We’re in there, and the ambulance doors fall fully open. The police and one staff member are out
in the rain, and we’re about to get out, but before we do, the air outside of the ambulance turns
dark gray. It’s a gray mist. And it rolls towards us in the ambulance until the gray wind is, is
blinding me. But I grab Alaska’s stretcher by the bar—
DENVER
You grabbed it while you couldn’t see?
LOGAN
(Denver-like mutterings) I could— I could see before. His stretcher wasn’t moved.
DENVER
That’s totally fair. Continue, I interrupted.
LOGAN
I’m waving around in the wind in front of me to keep people out of the way, and then I drag me
and Alaska out of the ambulance. The back end of Alaska’s stretcher bounces on the asphalt, so I,
I feel to check if he’s still there, and he’s fine. Then there’s this sound. It’s this huge crashing
boom. The wind slows down in my ears and the gray clears out into the vague shape of Alaska
laying down on the stretcher, in front of the ambulance. I look to the hospital, and there’s a
gaping hole in the wall with bricks all over the floor and broken glass everywhere. It’s, it’s
completely torn apart.
56
NEAR AMBULANCE ENTRANCE. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING.
JO
We’ve been focused on Stump Town this whole time but we never focused on the hospital. And
that’s where Alaska actually died.
BOO
Everything happened on July 13th.
JO
July 13th?
BOO
It’s Alaska’s death anniversary.
JO
But that’s in two days.
BOO
That’s right. We have 48 hours. Or the mirror’s going to kill Boo the same day as Alaska.

WKA #16 TRANSCRIPT.pdf

  • 1. WHO KILLED ALASKA #16 - MIRROR MEMORIA PART 1 written by Cameron Cooper LeBrun
  • 2. DENVER [narrator] Welcome to the season 2 finale. This episode contains significant depictions of head trauma and brain damage. Before we get started, I thought you should know that even when this episode gets scary, you are still safe. Check the bottom of the description for a full list of content warnings. And if you get scared, just imagine we’re all holding hands. A big kumbaya. 2
  • 3. DENVER [narrator] It’s a stale-air night in the pitch-black early hours of Tuesday, July 11th. One moment, I’m in the hospital waiting room, until… well… DREAM. ALL NON-DIEGETIC/SIMULATED. VOICE I’m busy. I’m watching me hands shake. DENVER Where am I? VOICE You’re busy. You’re watching your hands shake. DENVER [narrator] That’s what I remember of my dream. WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. LATE NIGHT/EARLY MORNING. NURSE 2 Mr Denver? DENVER WAKES with a start. DENVER [overlaid narrator] I’m awake. 3
  • 4. DENVER —Busy! What? I fell asleep. What do you need? NURSE 2 Was Boo anywhere near a lake when he dropped? DENVER You said a lake? NURSE 2 Yes. DENVER [overlaid narrator] The nurse is hovering over me. Why is she asking about a lake? DENVER No. No lake. We were by the viaduct. Why do you need to know if he was near a lake? NURSE 2 So Boo is still unconscious— he’s not asleep, he’s in a coma. But he’s talking about a lake— Has he ever mentioned being afraid of drowning? DENVER [narrator] (unison) I think out loud. How can he talk if he’s in a coma? DENVER (unison) How can he talk if he’s in a coma? NURSE 2 That is something we are looking into. 4
  • 5. DENVER [narrator] And why is she gripping her own hand so hard? NURSE 2 Okay, thank you. DENVER You can’t walk away— how is it a coma if he’s talking? Someone has to explain to me… NURSE 2 His brain activity is low. He shouldn’t be talking. Is there something wrong with him? DENVER What? DENVER [overlaid narrator] And I can’t sleep. I go back to watching my hands shake. DENVER [narrator] In the hospital waiting room. How much have you waited for someone who doesn’t even want you around? How many hours? How many hours is 24? Did I wait a long time, do you think? Is 24 hours a long time? (pause) Let’s go back. How did this happen? BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. DAY. SUMMER. Car is in motion. Alice is in the back. 5
  • 6. DENVER [overlaid narrator] It’s fifteen hours ago: July 10th, a sunny Monday of the new summer. Boo wakes up after a night of choppy rest and meets with Suspect 5, aka— BOO Jo. Boo’s ringtone: [“Fuck You Kyle.”] JO What? (separately) Emma’s calling you. BOO Hang up. I gotta tell you something. A button is pressed. Ringtone over. BOO (yawning) I thought I blocked her. JO I’m glad you’re finally cutting her out. She’s really problematic. It’s a left. IT’S A LEFT! BOO I know! I’m taking a different route. I’m just avoiding the pond! 6
  • 7. JO Oh. BOO Don’t you ever get new phobias? JO No? BOO (yawning) I gotta tell you something. JO About what? What the fuck— why’re you acting serious? BRO, you’re turning onto the highway! BOO I know! I’m taking a different route! So Alaska’s been dead for four years. JO It’s rush hour! Go straight! BOO I CAN’T! We’d go by the bay! JO Sweetie! What’s wrong with the bay!? BOO Water is fucked up! 7
  • 8. JO Water you talking about? BOO It hides things and it’s like what’s in there? Alright? I’ve been trying to get that shit handled for a bit now. JO This is gonna take forever… BOO But I didn’t start the investigations after he died, right? I started investigating for a reason, and it’s a reason I didn’t tell you. JO You talked about it on the podcast. I read the episode descriptions. BOO Yeah so two years ago, I got into a car crash and my car mirror broke off, so I saw my reflection, and the guy who’s in the mirror told me my brother’s gonna come back if I solve his death. Jo shifts in her seat. JO Can you stop acting weird? BOO I’m not acting weird! 8
  • 9. JO You are, you’re doing that thing you’ve been doing for months. BOO I’m a person, I’m not acting anything! Do you STILL not believe me or something? I’ve been talking about Alaska coming back for a long time and it never came up with us! My reflection talks to me! It’s in the first couple episodes! JO Hey Boo, you said you’re afraid of water? Simult: Jo takes a big sip from her water bottle until her cheeks are filled. BOO Not exactly afraid. DENVER [overlaid narrator] And now Jo takes a long sip of her water. And she spits all over Boo. Jo spits water all over Boo. BOO FUCK! What the fuck, Jo!? What the fuck!? Car swerves. 9
  • 10. JO AH! DENVER [narrator] As it turns out, Boo’s fear of water actually DOES include bottled water. Later on: BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. NIGHT. SUMMER. BOO Alice, I’m not acting weird. Alice breathes easy. BOO People just keep saying that. How can something I choose be out of character? I don’t HAVE a character. It is just, like, you name something, you name a rock Boo, and all of a sudden Boo the rock must love soccer and no other sport or else the soccer fans call it mental illness. I’m basically a person, and I’m not some rock! Alice, how can I be acting weird? DENVER [overlaid narrator] And then Boo TRIES to sleep. CUT TO LATER. BOO UGH! 10
  • 11. Alice yelps in surprise. BOO I’m not weird! DENVER [overlaid narrator] He doesn’t. And he tries to sleep again, at which point we get this recording: CUT TO LATER. BOO (asleep) I’m stuck at the bottom… The lake, the lake, memoria… Alice whimpers. Boo wakes up. BOO AH! I can’t do this! Alice barks. BOO What is she talking about! She got in my head! Everyone knows that my reflection is real! Where’s the mirror— 11
  • 12. Boo grabs a mirror in the dark. Throws aside the cloth covering it. BOO You’re real! You’re real. They can’t hear you but you’re real! Right? Exactly! Whether you’re real or not, she can’t tell me that I can’t hear you right now. You can’t let psychoanalysis stop you from connecting to other people’s thoughts, and their feelings, and their experiences and WHAT, what, I’m trying to learn myself a lesson, okay? God, your face is weird. Is my mic on? Boo fishes for his microphone. BOO The guy in the mirror says there’s a way I can show Jo I’m not C-R-A-Z-Y. Okay so now you go — how can I prove I’m not being weird? (pause) He says I can buy a ghost box. Do they sell those? I mean, I guess they would. So I can just get a ghost-hunting tool and they’ll hear you? I, I don’t think I can sleep. Jo doesn’t believe me and, and now, I have to go get it now! Mirror guy, are you gonna tell Jo that Alaska can come back? Alice disagrees. DENVER [overlaid narrator] I like to imagine Alice is saying, “You can just get it tomorrow.” 12
  • 13. BOO Alice, this is for the investigation! Shh, please! I need her help too, okay, if I’m bringing back my brother. DENVER [narrator] So Boo drives. LATER. Car is in motion. BOO (falling asleep) The lake… please… Alice barks. DENVER [narrator] He’s found a nighttime-only ghost-hunting store on Yelp, run out of some guy’s basement. LATER. Car is in motion. Alice is barking. Speaker phone rings for a moment. It’s picked up. BOO (projecting voice) Hi, it said I need a reservation to go in the store. 13
  • 14. DENVER [narrator] He goes to the only place in Roslyn he can find in the middle of the night. ROSLYN HEIGHTS. EXTERIOR./BOO’S CAR. INTERIOR. NIGHT. SUMMER. BOO Alice, I’ll be fine! I’ll be right back! Car door shuts, leaving Alice and the microphone behind. DENVER [narrator] And Boo gets himself a ghost box. LATER. BOO Alice, I got it! Boo opens car door. Alice barks. BOO I got it! I got the ghost box! 14
  • 15. Boo scoops up the microphone. Closes the door. Alice barks. BOO It’s okay, puppy! The, the lake, where’s my phone! Jo, you’re not gonna believe this! Boo starts to call Jo. BOO Jo! Jo, I got it! And the lake… please… JO [voicemail] You’ve reached Josephine Magaro! Hello! I’m so sorry I’ve missed your call, and I’ll be sure to get back to you as soon as soon as I can! BOO I have it! Jo, I have it! Boo clicks the on switch. Ghost box begins to make white noise. BOO SEE!? THIS IS PROOF! This is proof that I’M NOT ACTING DIFFERENT! I’VE BEEN THE EXACT SAME FROM EPISODE ONE AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED! I DON’T CHANGE! I’M TOO COMPLICATED! WHO EVEN NEEDS A NAME, JO! I’M a soul in a lake. 15
  • 16. DENVER [narrator] That’s when Boo starts to fall. A car, approaching. BOO The lake… DENVER [narrator] And I can’t get to him in time. Somewhere down the street, a car door opens. It’s Denver. DENVER [distant] No! Stop! Tires swerve. A horn is honked. DENVER [narrator] This is the story of how Boo Curtis came to face a traumatic brain injury. 16
  • 17. HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. Boo struggles to wake. A “blurred” ambience aligns into the sounds of a hospital room. BOO Where are goggles? NURSE Give me just a second, I’m working with another patient here. BOO (interrupting) Where are goggles!? NURSE Give me just a second. BOO (interrupting) Where are goggles!? Simult: Nurse approaches. NURSE What’s the last thing you remember? BOO Where are goggles!? 17
  • 18. NURSE Goggles? BOO Goggles! Have goggles. Give the goggles. NURSE All of your things are in this drawer here if you can just give me a moment. The nurse goes to open the drawer. BOO Look at the… Stop looking at… what’s the word? M-E? NURSE I’m not looking at you, sir. Here they are. Brings Boo’s belongings, including goggles. NURSE These are all of your things. Do you know where you are right now? BOO That’s the Allll— no, ghost box. Am… forgetting something? Hold on… have to think. NURSE Do you know what year it is? 18
  • 19. BOO Of course… do. Hold on, need to… Give the ghost box. She does. NURSE What year is it? BOO Give a second. Boo clicks the switch of the ghost box. Static. The ghost box is going through different channels of the radio. BOO It’s you, right? Are you the guy from the mirror? 19
  • 20. THEME SONG STARTS DENVER [narrator] Welcome to Who Killed Alaska: Detective Files. BOO This is Who Killed Alaska: The Adventures! DENVER [narrator] I’m a private investigator looking for the killer. BOO And I’m the regular guy who’s gonna stop him. BOO / DENVER [narrator] Previously on Who Killed Alaska! SHAY [clip - WKA3] Alaska, Jeremy, Bobby, and Boo were all escorted to St. Francis Hospital with the help of the police. LOGAN [clip - WKA4] First, we were in front of Alaska’s dying body, and I said that there was someone in the woods. So I ran out and chased them, and I got shot in the ankle. And then I limped back in time to get picked up by the ambulance, and I end up strapped into one of the extra seats. DENVER [clip - WKA12] Boo’s been facing away from the mirror. I forgot that he hates mirrors. He thinks his reflection is out to get him. 20
  • 21. BOO [clip - WKA2] My reflection talks to me. And I’m avoiding him. BOO [clip - WKA13] People keep saying I’m acting weird. JO [clip - WKA11] Is he acting weird today? BOO [clip CONTD. - WKA11] No! BOBBY [clip - WKA11] Stop being weird, Boo! BOO [clip - WKA11] Naw, I am being weird. BOO [clip - WKA12] I’m just saying things and doing things. How am I acting like anything? BOO And now, it’s time for the new episode! DENVER [narrator] Welcome back, bud. BOO / DENVER [narrator] This is Who Killed Alaska. THEME SONG ENDS 21
  • 22. WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. [Melancholic music.] DENVER [narrator] Me and everyone who cares about Boo Curtis are sitting in the waiting room of St Francis Hospital— the same hospital where Alaska died in his bed, 4 years ago. And in between one Bobby going up to complain about the wait, and all the headaches from the noise and the stress and the cleaner’s smell— NURSE 2 Only two visitors at a time. BOBBY Who’s going? HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. DENVER [narrator] —we don’t know that Boo is awake— now undergoing speech and swallow tests, and being asked about his— NURSE —allergies? BOO No. But um, dog is lactose intolerance. 22
  • 23. NURSE You said your dog is lactose intolerant? Nurse types answer into computer. BOO Yes, and um. You know how, people’s periods sync up? It’s like, our rhythms echo each other and body has contact lactose intolerance because love dog Alice. NURSE Um— Okay? DENVER [overlaid narrator] Fortunately, Alice has been left with a nearby resident who volunteered to look after her until Boo’s return from the hospital. She wasn’t easy to console. She tried so desperately to climb into that ambulance with Boo. Door opens. NURSE 2 Boo, you have visitors. NURSE Ohhh, that’s exciting! 23
  • 24. EMMA Um. NURSE Why don’t you two come in, I’m just gonna have a little talk with him if you don’t mind. NURSE Do you have any dietary restrictions? EMMA The monitor is blocking the door. NURSE I can move that for you. Nurse walks over. Moves the wheeled respirator machine, then locks the wheels in place. Closes door. EMMA Hi. BOO Hey Emma. You’re here. Wow, thanks for coming. EMMA Yeah, of course… JO Hey biiiiiiitch! Boo Boo Boo Boo Boo Booby how you doin, Boo? 24
  • 25. BOO Hey. Today not Boo, by the way. JO What? BOO Don’t call “Boo.” Avoiding labels right now, including name. Trust, it’s doing a lot for. Pause. JO Gotcha. NURSE Okay, I’m noticing we don’t have a primary care physician. Do you have a primary care physician? BOO No. NURSE Okay. How’s the pain by the way? Scale of one to ten? BOO Maybe eight. 25
  • 26. NURSE Alright. I’m gonna get you something stronger and I’ll be right back. Make sure he stays relaxed, ok, his brain is recovering and the last thing we want is him getting stressed. JO Okay— we can do that. NURSE I know you can. BOO So this is the hospital where Alaska died… kinda crazy… Nurse leaves through door. BOO Need to get out of here. EMMA I’m sorry. BOO No, need to get out of here! Need to solve Alaska’s death and need your help. Pass the black thing, the ghost box. EMMA Boo you can’t work on the mystery right now. Your brain is injured, you’re healing. 26
  • 27. BOO Don’t say Boo! Pass the ghost box! Show you. JO I’m not dealing with him! I’m not, I’m not! BOO (unison) Don’t look at— (stops himself) EMMA (unison) This is your vacation! You’ll solve it better after you heal! BOO It’s all good. It’s just overwhelming because something is missing, nobody knows what it is, and — talked to reflection— Everything’s fine. It’s just important, need to solve Alaska’s death. EMMA Should we get a nurse? BOO Can do it, can do this, the, the, the guy in the mirror’s gonna kill! Kill— kill M-E. The guy in the — Gonna die. Jo. Jo. Gonna die. JO Excuse me? EMMA Did your reflection hurt you? BOO No. Pass the black thing, Emma. Let show you. 27
  • 28. Emma passes Boo the ghost box. EMMA Show me what? BOO And we need a mirror. EMMA I can use my phone. BOO That’s probably fine. Emma takes out her phone, switches to camera. BOO Emma. Jo. You’re gonna meet reflection. Emma stammers. EMMA How? Boo clicks the on switch. Ghost box begins to make noise. 28
  • 29. BOO 2 Hey, what’s up. How’s it goin. I’m Boo. EMMA (unison) AH! FUCK OFF! JO (unison) It’s fake! Emma, cut it, this is pre-recorded— BOO 2 You’re loud, ok? This is a hospital. JO Idiot! My cousin’s boyfriend did this last week! JO He puts a speaker down and plays sounds! Emma! Emma, it’s a prank! BOO 2 (unison) It’s not pre-recorded if I’m talking to you. BOO (unison) It’s real. JO (unison) Don’t react! Don’t react! Don’t react! Don’t react! BOO 2 I’m responding to you. BOO Yeah. 29
  • 30. BOO 2 I, me, my, mine. He can’t form a sentence but I can. JO (unison) How’re you— how’re you!? BOO (unison) Look, they hate you. That’s cute. BOO 2 Kill yourself. BOO Kill yourself. BOO 2 Kill yourself. BOO / BOO 2 Kill yourself. EMMA I think I need to be checked into the hospital? BOO 2 Kill yourself. Jo starts laughing and crying. 30
  • 31. JO This isn’t real! EMMA No way! It’s not real at all! BOO Guys, this is not the weirdest shit that’s happened to us. Alright, this is a bit much— JO (laughing) Emma, I fucking hate you— EMMA (laughing and crying) That’s fair! JO (laughing) But I’m so actually glad I can look over and you’re, like, also real! EMMA (laughing and crying) Yeah! BOO They’ve actually gone crazy. BOO 2 You hate that word. BOO Kill yourself. BOO 2 Emma! Jo! 31
  • 32. JO (coming down) I don’t think I can deal with two of them… Strange barks and growls come from the ghost box. Jo and Emma go quiet. BOO 2 I’m gonna say something. (pause) Your “friend” is permanently damaged. Okay? He was 22, he was at his intellectual prime, aside from what weed was doing to his memory— BOO That’s not true. BOO 2 —and yeah, Denver was right, he was a force to be reckoned with. Ditzy, yes, like he thinks trees can hear you, and sometimes he throws forks at people because when his brain enters that conservation state, he can’t think three seconds into the future. EMMA (in amazement) You really are talking to us. BOO 2 But he was also a chess-player. It’s a cliche, but Boo really did process the world in tactics: he had a system that he kept hidden. He was teaching lightning to strike twice in there. But then he dropped on the asphalt like a fucking idiot and his parietal lobe dribbled against his skull. The floor gave him brain damage. Basically, I’m gonna take over his body. 32
  • 33. EMMA Why? JO I’m gonna climb out this window. Nobody’s even gonna notice. BOO 2 He has 48 hours to solve who killed Alaska. If he doesn’t solve Alaska’s death, I’m going to take over his body. EMMA (unison) Why would you do that? BOO 2 (unison) He has 48 hours. BECAUSE HE’S STUPID! Because he’s useless! He had two years— TWO YEARS to solve Alaska’s death and he’s done NOTHING. Hey at this point he’s hopeless because he’s brain dead— BOO Not brain dead. BOO 2 —but I’m giving him a two day grace period, for Alaska. Boo never even wanted to live. But say Alaska comes back. I’m never gonna take a brother away from Alaska. You don’t even know what I’m saying, do you? You don’t listen to the fucking show. JO It’s— I don’t like hearing myself talk, okay? 33
  • 34. EMMA You can’t take a brother away from Alaska. Alaska’s dead. BOO 2 He doesn’t have to be! Silence. BOO 2 Alaska would come back if Boo just solved this fucking mystery! But he barely told you that, because he doesn’t tell you anything, because you’re NOT FRIENDS— Boo shuts off the ghost box. BOO So that’s over. Pass the trash can. Gotta throw up. 34
  • 35. WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. DENVER [narrator] There’s something about sitting in a hospital waiting room that’s so dramatic and so boring. I should also disclose that Bobby is no longer a conflict of interest. He was formally terminated from the office in February for reasons the management would not like to make public. Even I know very little about what happened. There were more issues than even I was aware of. Anyway: There’s something about sitting in a hospital waiting room that’s so dramatic and so boring. BOBBY If you combine it, they made the three of us wait 44 hours! That is a long time! DENVER For sure. BOBBY I could make three vlogs and edit them in that amount of time. And sleep. Did you see that nurse looked down her nose at me when I complained? Like she didn’t even sugarcoat. That is not how you handle customer service. If they’re annoyed, then they should let us see Boo! Bobby’s phone pings. DENVER Did you get a text? 35
  • 36. BOBBY Uhh, I’ll check. BOBBY Emma texted me. She says Boo’s okay. Oh man, I wanna see Boo so bad! Hey uh Logan. How come you’ve been waiting so long? Logan pops out an earbud, lets it hang. He’s listening to “One-Two.” LOGAN What’s up? BOBBY How come you’ve been waiting so long? Don’t you not like Boo that much? LOGAN What do you mean? Like— Uhh, I mean. I had some free time. Hold on, I’m getting a call. Logan stands up. LOGAN Hello? BOBBY I think he secretly loves Boo. 36
  • 37. DENVER I don’t know about that. Bobby’s phone pings. DENVER Is that from Emma? BOBBY I don’t think I got a text. Oh, I did actually! You are so right. Checking the “shiz.” Pause. BOBBY This isn’t very good. DENVER Is it Boo’s condition, or? DENVER [narrator] That’s when I find out about the thing in Boo’s mirror. NURSE 2 Only two visitors at a time. DENVER [narrator] And what it’s going to do. 37
  • 38. NURSE 2 He’s fine. Only two visitors at a time. DENVER [narrator] And they won’t let us see Boo. DENVER Let’s step outside. 38
  • 39. HOSPITAL. EXTERIOR. EVENING. LOGAN Lift up the phone— so, are you, you’re dying? We hear the door swing open and slam shut behind. BOO [speaker phone] Let’s leave. EMMA [speaker phone] You can’t, Boo— BOO [speaker phone] (unison) Don’t call Boo. Have to solve Alaska’s death. Can’t do that stuck in the hospital. BOBBY (unison) (gritting teeth) I’m so… hungry…! EMMA [speaker phone] They have more tests to run on you! Your brain could be bleeding! DENVER How about I solve Alaska’s death for you, Boo? BOO [speaker phone] Is that Denver? Who brought him? Who did this? Gonna pop a loogie in your ear hole— DENVER I rode with you in the ambulance. 39
  • 40. BOO [speaker phone] That was YOU? Then who left these pretty flowers!? DENVER Also me. BOO [speaker phone] Motherfucker! Now these are trash flowers, for the trash! BOO [speaker phone] (unison) If you think you’re so nice then help get out of this hospital. BOBBY (unison) That thing… that thing… it can’t get away with this! DENVER (unison) Boo— JO [speaker phone] Boo, no. You are not leaving before the ct scan. LOGAN We can, just, we can leave. The ct scan doesn’t matter if Boo’s dying. BOO [speaker phone] Not Boo. Let’s get out of here. JO [speaker phone] No. BOO [speaker phone] Let’s go. 40
  • 41. EMMA [speaker phone] You can solve it here. BOBBY We have to kill that thing…! We have to—! EMMA [speaker phone] Just solve it in the hospital! BOO [speaker phone] Can’t! All can think about is Alaska’s bleeps— bleeps— beeps! Flatlining, in front of 1990s- styrofoam-core-ass curtains. What am supposed to do? LOGAN (unison) You know that it’s lucky we’re in the same hospital that Alaska died in, right? EMMA [speaker phone] (unison) So I— BOBBY (unison) It makes me… starving! BOO [speaker phone] Guess… so… LOGAN Think about all the stuff you can investigate that we can’t normally do. EMMA [speaker phone] If you wanna investigate the hospital, I can think of a couple ways I can find us some records. 41
  • 42. BOO [speaker phone] This is silly! Right? Like what do we have here? We have staff, that probably weren’t there! LOGAN I guess, but the staff could know about Alaska even if they’re new. People talk. Co-workers talk. EMMA [speaker phone] Then let’s do that! Let’s try to solve who killed Alaska without you leaving the hospital. Okay? BOO [speaker phone] We could try. Actually, the risks are too— JO [speaker phone] Alright, we’re exploring the hospital! Let’s go, hang up, hang up. We have a time limit. BOBBY Wait, what’s the plan? I blacked out. What’re we doing? EMMA [speaker phone] Hold on, before we start. 3… DENVER Are you good? EMMA [speaker phone] C’mon, 3… BOO / JO / EMMA [speaker phone] 2… 1… Murder. BOBBY [speaker phone] Murder… 42
  • 43. DENVER [narrator] Boo’s life is in danger. I need to go my own way. 43

AD BREAK ENDS 45
  • 46. WAITING ROOM. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. We hear the door swing open and slam shut behind. DENVER [overlaid narrator] He was unconscious for a full day and now he’s pushing through post-concussive syndrome to solve a case that always made him stumble. I don’t think I can solve this case in 48 hours, but when you’re late for your flight, you have to run. After all— I’ve already reminded myself that today could be difficult. Today could be trying. And I’m prepared to be scared and overwhelmed. Everything is worth a try, and a try is worth your confidence. Simult: Logan catches up. DENVER Hi, my name is private investigator Finn Denver. I’m investigating a cold case homicide… LOGAN Aaaand I’m here to help. DENVER [narrator] Let’s see how much I can get away with. BOBBY I’m here too! DENVER [narrator] And let’s see if these guys get in the way. 46
  • 47. DENVER [narrator] I start making rounds interviewing staff. Meanwhile, the-man-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-called- Boo gets his vegan hospital meal, a platter of pea casserole and cornbread with fake cheese. After that, he’s finally switched to a wireless heart monitor. That box will hang on his neck and keep track of his vitals. HOSPITAL ROOM. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. NURSE 2 Alright, you’re set. Now you’ll be able to go to the bathroom without any issue, ok? BOO (eating) Great! Thank you so much. NURSE 2 Absolutely. Remember that if you experience any changes in your symptoms, you can just press that button right here. BOO (eating) Ok! She walks out the room. Boo violently scrambles out of his seat. BOO (swallowing the last of his food) Time to investigate! 47
  • 48. JO Don’t you hurt yourself! BOO Let’s retrace Alaska’s steps. They leave. HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. EMMA (whispering) You’re stepping on my foot. DENVER [overlaid narrator] Now Jo, Emma, and the-man-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-called-Boo line up duckling style to stroll out of the room in a casual sneak. And Boo walks to the receptionist desk and starts the conversation. BOO Hi. Have a question. RECEPTIONIST I have an answer. I might have an answer. BOO What happens when an ambulance drops somebody off? 48
  • 49. RECEPTIONIST Well. The ambulance would go to the ambulance entrance. Are you supposed to be here right now? BOO Toilet broke. Need to find some place to poop. Let’s go guys! We poop together. Isn’t that crazy? We’re really weird. Bye, have a normal day! Poop with your friends! DENVER [narrator] Jo, Emma, and Boo roam the halls until they find themselves a map. ANOTHER HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. JO I’m looking. EMMA Boo. BOO Don’t call “Boo.” EMMA Right. Why do you not like that? (CONTD.) 49
  • 50. BOO Came up with a mental recovery routine, and it involves tricking the brain. To summarize it, stress levels have been uncontrollable which is bad for, y’know, concussion recovery, and at first felt really defeated because high stress levels are a hormonal response to injury which makes them out of control. But realized, still intelligent and still cognitively have wits about, so! Using thinking mind to trick feeling mind. Basically just framing as not a person so don’t have to inherit the pressures of living up to a name like Boo. JO (regarding map) Got it. Here’s the ambulance entrance. EMMA Okay. Well. Look at this meme, you. BOO Very nice. EMMA It’s like. Um. Y’know when you really need to pinch a loaf? BOO (interrupting) So what direction is it? JO Just follow me. 50
  • 51. NEAR AMBULANCE ENTRANCE. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. JO Are we doing something? BOO Just let process. So Alaska would’ve shown up in an ambulance right outside, with Logan and Bobby in there with him. Umm. Was there too— the guy, the guy you call Boo was there too! EMMA You were there. BOO Right, yes, Boo was there! Remember— he remembers. He was brought in a police car since the ambulance was full. When we got to this entrance, Boo couldn’t see what was happening from the back of the police car. We stayed here for like ten minutes, uh, and then we went to a different entrance. Didn’t see what was going on, and— Hey, this is a different material. You hear that, guys? The wall is just made up of a different brick from here on. This isn’t a design choice. EMMA Does that have to do with Alaska? BOO Don’t know but it reminds of some shit… But that’s, that’s weird… 51
  • 52. DENVER [narrator] While Boo examines the wall, I’m bouncing from one staff member to the next. My hands are shaking. I haven’t learned anything. But I should be grateful that they haven’t kicked me out yet. HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. NURSE 4 I’m really sorry. I started working here last year, so I don’t really know anything. DENVER Oh! So this is all new! Oh ok! NURSE 4 Yeahhh. DENVER Well thank you for your time. Really helpful. NURSE 4 Of course! Hope it goes well, though. DENVER Yup. We’ve got this! Have a good night, ok? NURSE 4 (unison) You too. DENVER (unison) We might have to go through everyone in this hospital and I’m gonna lose track really soon. Do you think there’s a way to get rid of Boo’s reflection? 52
  • 53. LOGAN I have no idea. DENVER I don’t know why I asked. None of us know. BOBBY Denver! DENVER Yes, Bobby. BOBBY My instincts are drawing me in that direction! DENVER To the… women’s health wing? BOBBY No! To the chairs over there. My instincts are kicking in… Those chairs are significant. Denver walks over. DENVER These are weird chairs. Denver pulls on a chair. 53
  • 54. DENVER These chairs are anchored to the wall with metal cords. You were right. BOBBY It’s! It’s overwhelming… I might throw up! My instincts… DENVER You don’t need to anchor furniture like this outside of tornado country. LOGAN Uh oh. DENVER What do you think, Jeremy? Is that a shrug? LOGAN It’s a shrug. DENVER Do you know why these chairs are anchored to the wall? LOGAN I might. I might not. ANOTHER HALLWAY. JO Hi. My friend broke the toilet with his enormous dumpy. Where’s the bathroom? NURSE 5 It’s down that hall, on the right. 54
  • 55. JO Thank you! And by the way! NURSE 5 Yeah! JO Was the ambulance entrance renovated? NURSE 5 It was. There was a storm a few years ago and that entryway got damaged. JO Ok, but how was that— why would the wall break in a storm? Was the brick already loose, or? NURSE 5 A tornado broke down the doors. BOO Do you mean a hurricane? NURSE 5 It was a tornado. It was a freak weather event. Like while a tornado was forming, it went inside the building. HALLWAY. ICU. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. LOGAN You could say I was there. Because I was there. When the ambulance stopped and that one joker was done strangling Alaska— (CONTD.) 55
  • 56. We’re in there, and the ambulance doors fall fully open. The police and one staff member are out in the rain, and we’re about to get out, but before we do, the air outside of the ambulance turns dark gray. It’s a gray mist. And it rolls towards us in the ambulance until the gray wind is, is blinding me. But I grab Alaska’s stretcher by the bar— DENVER You grabbed it while you couldn’t see? LOGAN (Denver-like mutterings) I could— I could see before. His stretcher wasn’t moved. DENVER That’s totally fair. Continue, I interrupted. LOGAN I’m waving around in the wind in front of me to keep people out of the way, and then I drag me and Alaska out of the ambulance. The back end of Alaska’s stretcher bounces on the asphalt, so I, I feel to check if he’s still there, and he’s fine. Then there’s this sound. It’s this huge crashing boom. The wind slows down in my ears and the gray clears out into the vague shape of Alaska laying down on the stretcher, in front of the ambulance. I look to the hospital, and there’s a gaping hole in the wall with bricks all over the floor and broken glass everywhere. It’s, it’s completely torn apart. 56
  • 57. NEAR AMBULANCE ENTRANCE. ST FRANCIS. INTERIOR. EVENING. JO We’ve been focused on Stump Town this whole time but we never focused on the hospital. And that’s where Alaska actually died. BOO Everything happened on July 13th. JO July 13th? BOO It’s Alaska’s death anniversary. JO But that’s in two days. BOO That’s right. We have 48 hours. Or the mirror’s going to kill Boo the same day as Alaska. 57
