Guns In School Julio Cortez
Guns in School? In the December 25, 2012 article published in USA Today, "Editorial: Gun Lobby, Don't Change the Subject," author Julio Cortez
talks about armed teachers and security guards as solutions to protect our children in school. He states that the NRA's Wayne LaPierre "makes it
sound so simple; hire armed guards for every school in America." Cortez says the NRA's attempt to introduce more weapons is a tactic to distract from
the serious debate about firearms. America has just as much mental illness as other countries and the same amount of violence in the media. More guns
are what make this country dangerous, but the Supreme Court has ruled twice, that the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to own a firearm.
The court, however; has allowed bans on assault weapons and firearms with large magazines. That being said, since this nation isn't about to relinquish
their right to bear arms anytime soon, armed forces posted at schools seems like a good idea. Although gun–packing teacher sounds a little ludicrous.

43 year–old Thomas Hamilton entered the gymnasium of Dunblane Primary School and began to open fire on the 28 students and their teacher. He
shot and killed 17 students and the one school teacher. Before emergency responders showed up Hamilton had shot himself. This tragedy and two
others (not school shootings however) sparked up a public interest to have tighter restrictions on the ownership of firearms. Handguns more specifically,
the type that Hamilton used in his attack. The original ban outlawed all cartridge ammunition handguns with the exception of a .22 calibre single shot.
Upon new legislation, the remaining .22 cartridge handguns were also banned in the Firearms Act 1997. This ban does not affect Northern Ireland, the
Isles of Man, or the Channel Islands. Nevertheless, thus far the United Kingdom has not had another school shooting. Knock on wood,

Spanish Conquest Essay
Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs Have you ever about ripping out a human's still beating heart? If not, you would not fit in with the Aztecs. The Aztecs
were a Mesoamerican Empire that rose in power in the post classic period. From the 1300's –1521, the Aztecs continued to increase their population
and their influence in the Mesoamerican region, despite the upcoming nearby empires, such as the Tlaxcalan empire. This all changed with the arrival
of the Spaniard, Hernan Cortez. Cortez was a Spanish conquistador under the rule of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Cortez contributed for the
downfall of many empires, including the Aztecs. Even though conquering was not a part of the Catholics religion. The ancient Aztecs followed their
religious beliefs more closely than did the Spanish Catholic Hernan Cortez. Unlike the Spanish,
The Aztecs believed that there were many gods that contributed to everyday life patron god, Huitzilopochtli, communicated to the Aztec priest,
Motecuhzuma, that it was time to migrate to another region. He said that there would be an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, ... Show more

And they fought with everything they had. The Aztecs just wanted to protect their home. So, they did not back down. But it was not enough to stop
Cortez and his men's advanced weapons; it was a massacre. And it was not the only time Cortez and his men killed. Before their arrival in
Tenochtitlan, Cortez only had about 500 men who followed him. And he knew that the Aztecs had hundreds of thousands of soldiers at their
disposal. So, Cortez invaded outside villages and forced men to join him. If they refused he would kill them and their family. Displaying how little
the Catholic law means to him. Because in the bible, one of the first laws given was "thou shalt not kill." Cortez did exactly what the bible said not to

The Manhunt For Christopher Cortez
Title
Dorner and Cortez are victims as much as they are criminals because of the choices they have made and the things they have done. They have both
made bad decisions that has led them to where they are now.
Dorner got called many rude names for being a black person, he suffered all through his childhood and most of his adulthood. In the Manhunt for
Christopher Dorner, chapter 2, it states, "In first grade at Norwalk Christian School, he wrote, the principal swatted him for punching a student who had
taunted him with a racial slur. The swattings from authority figures continued through junior high, he claimed, when he dared to stand up to bigots."
Throughout his life, there were many things said to him that he didn't like, even when he arrived at the LAPD. In chapter 3, it states, "When he arrived
at the LAPD, he wrote, he found it a nest of racists. In the Police Academy, he complained about another recruit's use of a racial slur and was
shunned." Although, Cortez was a Mexican, he also had racist stuff said against him because of his race. In Applebee (707), it states, "And as he drove

shattered his front teeth, split his tongue and exploded bone as it emerged from his lower right jaw. His face went numb." Also in chapter 3, it states,
"One bullet had pierced his badge, ripped through his ballistic vest, and punctured his heart. He had not drawn his gun." Both Dorner and Cortez had

Cortez Observation
In this journal I learned or had reinforced: Going about my day I need to pay attention to my gestures and simple hand movements when I'm
around others. Especially when I'm trying to make a good first impression on someone. Avoiding signals that would imply laziness, nervousness,
anxiety, or shyness are key to being successful at the first impression. Some observations made about Cortez in the short time given include he is a
very outspoken individual, highly confident in himself, and shows maturity in his actions. He has his close friends he sticks around, but he isn't
afraid to branch out occasionally and he also takes a stand for ideas that he is certain about to insure others are informed of his knowledge. Not
knowing anything about him academically, it seems it could be inferred he does well with his studies. It was overheard in class that he had a
multiple classes with Mrs. Minton so going out on a limb it could be said Cortez is seeking a degree in communications or a business and will use
these classes to help him help others in the workforce.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the last few days, bright reds and blues have been his choice of colors with the occasional blacks and dark greys. He has been
attentive and assertive in class most meetings and walks like he has a purpose to get somewhere. However, after saying that, there have been a few
days where he has been relaxed and laid back, still paying attention, but staying very low key and out of the conversations. Being a senior most likely
plays into that the most, having that upperclassman mentality lets the brain slip when sometimes not needed. It gives a person a feeling of authority in
the class because they have been there so long and know the ins and outs of all the

Conquest Of Aztecs Essay
Within the religious aspect of the Western Civilization, there were specific omens reported after the Conquest of Aztec. Most of the omes were
disasters and people didn't know whether to believe them or not, according to the document Omens of Doom. An example of a religious omen
recorded was Omen 1. In this omen it was said that: "According to legend, the Aztecs believed that the god Quetzalcoatl had sailed east to join the
sun god, warning that he would later return to reclaim his kingdom. The Aztecs believed that this could occur in the year One Reed (1519) and that
god could take on many different forms. Including a pale skinned, bearded man." When Moctezuma first met Cortez, Cortez went to show his
grattitude when all of a sudden Moctezuma's two guards stopped him. Moctezuma was not allowed to be touched. When Cortez was able to speak
with Moctezuma he took off his necklace of pearls and placed it around Moctezuma's neck. Walking down the street a little later, two servants came
up and gave Cortez two necklesses. The necklesses were wrapped in cloth and were made from red snails, which here they hold with great esteem.

Summary Of ' An American Folk Tale ' By Americo Paredes
With His Pistol in His Hand by Americo Paredes is an American folk tale about taking place in 1901 along the Texas Mexico border. Paredes tells the
story of Gregorio Cortez a Mexican farmer living on the south Texas Border who was made a hero by his people. The second novel is that of Chester
Himes ' If He Hollers Let Him Go. Both stories deal with the issues of violence and racism, although in very different ways. Based on both works, I
believe that Bob Jones' figure leaves a more lasting and long–term consequence of racism. Chester Himes' novel about Bob Jones has somewhat of an
autobiographical touch to it. It is more persuasive in the way that, he and Bob have a lot in common. Even though Paredes' character focuses on a
real character he is made into a fictional, whereas Bob Jones may or may not be representative of some of the author 's actual experiences were, leaven
the reader or audience with a longer lasting impression of the hardship during those times.
Gregorio Cortez was an unknown man until 1901.He was considered an outlaw but was also a likeable young man according to others. Cortez had
never been in trouble with the law. Cortez was one of three sons, and he lived on a farm with his parents. Cortez only occasionally had some disputes
with American farmers. Cortez tried to stay out of any kind of trouble but one day, Cortez received a visit from Sheriff Morris. Sheriff Morris, awhite
American was searching for horse thieves. There had been rumors that

acting like a real heroine and giving him confidence to fight off his own little battle. Scott also has a moment of everything coming into place at
the end of the story when," Me and Lee and Wesley, standing on one side of a big glass window gazing at my new baby brother"(Lubar 275). Scott
finally found his group of friends that have his back and he can finally relax about the whole baby brother thing. He can now use what he learned
from his freshman year and apply it to life at home, at school and dealing with a new baby brother. Finally the hero has accomplished a mission and

Compare And Contrast Christopher Columbus And Hernando Cortez
Once the New World was revealed, several explorers were sent to claim land for the countries they represented. One explorer was Hernando Cortez
who was sent by Spain to claim the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. John Cabot was sent to explore what is now Canada by King Henry VII of England.
Another notorious explorer would be Christopher Columbus who initially was the first to actually find the New World. Although explorers come from
different countries, they all share a desire to accumulate land and wealth. Hernando Cortez, of Spain, was sent to explore and claim the Aztec Empire.
Spain sent Cortez there only after hearing about great treasures supposedly being hidden there. Cortez was given a small expedition of about six
hundred men to command

his people had intermarried with the natives. He had asked his people to return with him, but they had all refused to return and no longer saw him as
their leader. He had then returned to his homeland, and ever since Moctezuma had always heard that the prince's force would attempt to conquer the

Hernan Cortez Research Paper
In today's world, we have many famous explorers that we study in text books. One person that is lesser known is Hernan Cortez. Hernan Cortez was
born into a lesser noble family in the year of 1485. He was born by the name of Hernan Cortez Pizarror (aztec–history, com). Hernan was destined by
his parents to become a lawyer. Setting his own path, Hernan Cortez became a conquistador instead at the age of nineteen. Denying his orders to not
set sail, Hernan took eleven ships and more than five hundred men to the Mexican Coast (biography.com). Later becoming a ruler and a criminal, he
died December 2, 1547. Before Hernan became an explorer, it was believed he studied at the University of Salamanca (Minister,biography.com). There
he studied law that he failed, but enjoyed writing and learning Latin (aztec–history.com). Hernan denied orders to not start his voyage by Diego
Velazquez in 1511, while determining on going or not, he worked in the civil government and also lead Santiago as mayor for a bit (biography.com).
When Hernan reached the Mexican Coast in February 1519 he allied with the compatible natives, but the ones who were not received deadly force.
Before he strived to take down the Aztec Empire, he fought against Tlaxcala and Cholula warriors. When he traveled to Hispaniola, today's Haiti and the

Cortez explored the Yucatan coastline. Landing in Tabasco, Cortez captured the natives. Although, Tabasco people possessed little of value, they told
Cortez of the great treasures of the Aztec Empire. Cortez moved his troops northward and conquered the port of Vera Cruz. In Vera Cruz, Cortez

learned how they were built. We also got to go down into Cliff Palace. This is a ranger led program. Our guide was from Tennessee, but he knew so
much information about Mesa Verde and Cliff Palace. I recommend touring Cliff Palace and the rest of Mesa Verde during the morning if you're
visiting during the summer. We toured Cliff Palace at 10:30 and it was complete shade. Cliff Palace is not a hike that you need to take if you have
heart, hip, knee, or shoulder problems. This hike requires climbing down steep stairs and climbing ladders. There is one short ladder before you
get to Cliff Palace, and then there is a very long ladder when you leave Cliff Palace. Bring water when you come to Mesa Verde, even in the
morning. Also be mindful of altitude changes. Cliff Palace is located at a 7,000 foot attitude. My house in Tennessee is located at 440 feet. So it's easy
to get winded even if you're not really doing that

How Did Woody Indians Influence Society In The 1930's
If I walked up to a person today they most likely wouldn't know who John Steinbeck, Will Rogers or Woody Guthrie is. In the 1930s, this was a
different story. Everybody knew who they were in the 30's. Steinbeck, Guthrie, and Rogers were famous for their work considering the Great
Depression. The Great Depression was caused by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Will Rogers, Woody Guthrie, andJohn Steinbeck all influenced
society in the 30's by providing a means of diversion for the common man.
In the 1930's the people of America turned to John Steinbeck to understand and relate to the hardships of the Depression. John Steinbeck was most
famous for writing Of Mice and Men which references the Great Depression. Another one of his novels is about the Great Depression, it is called The
Grapes of Wrath. The Grapes of Wrath was about the lack of jobs, food, and money in Oklahoma. The trials that the people went through were

Woody Guthrie was the most famous folk singer in the 1930's. Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and moved to Texas when he was 18. Guthrie was in
the hardest hit area when Black Sunday came around. His songs written near or during the Great Depression were supposed to put a hand on the
country's shoulder and say that we can get through this. The Story of Oklahoma states that "much of Woody Guthrie's life was tragic, but he managed
to make it into a joyful song" (Baird 340). This quote explains that Guthrie's life was hard. Guthrie wrote his most famous song "This Land is Your

Spanish Conquistadors: The Aztec-Spanish War
The Aztec–Spanish War was more than a war leading to the demise of the Aztec empire; rather it was one of the most remarkable and significant wars
of European history, beginning the colonization of Mesoamerica. The Spaniards who came to the New World were known as conquistadors, Spanish
for "conquerors". Hernando Cortez, one of the most ambitious Spanish conquistadors, left Cuba in 1519 with 500 men, 11 ships, horses, and countless
other provisions. The exploratory mission, supported by the governor of Cuba: Diego de VelГЎsquez, soon turned into one of conquest. Driven by the
pursuit of gold, glory and god, Cortez was determined to use any means necessary in his desire to conquer one of ancient history's most prominent
civilizations: The Aztecs.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Spanish conquistadors wanted to convert the Aztecs to their Christian faith. There are three main theories of how the Spaniards converted the
Aztecs. The first theory was the belief that the Aztecs suspected Cortez to be a god returning to claim his lands. The second theory was that the
Spaniards forced the Aztecs to convert to Christianity. The last theory was the belief that Spanish missionaries blended the Native and Christian
religion to easily convert the Aztecs. During this blend of religious ideas, however, many Spaniards, intrigued with the customs of the Aztecs, adopted
some beliefs of the Aztecs, fusing these beliefs into their own religious practices. The combination of all three theories eventually caused the
conversion of the Aztecs to Christianity. The Aztecs first viewed these acts of conversion as attacks on their ideology, but most Aztecs succumbed to
the Spaniard's conversion tactics. After the Aztec–Spanish war, Aztecs who wished to become Catholic were allowed to retain the assets of their
property, which was a major incentive. Catholicism became the religion of Mesoamerica, as it is to this day. Another reason why the Aztec
–Spanish
War was a significant event in the Spanish colonization of the Americas is that for the first time, alliances with natives in surrounding areas

The Motto Analysis
Aubrey "Drake" Graham is one of the biggest rapper and television actor, who is best known in Canada for playing a role as Jimmy Brook, the
"wheelchair guy" on Degrassi. He began his transition into the world of Hip–Hop which is a style of popular music of rap, a subculture of
inner–youths who are typically devotees of rap music. One of his well–known songs is "The Motto," a song that has been popularized and defined as
YOLO, an acronym for "you only live once." It implies that one should enjoy life, even if that means to take risks in life. The video, "The Motto"
illustrates that acquiring loads of cash and material possessions such as good looking low–riders, fine women, and appealing jewelry are the sources of
pleasure and happiness. I agree with Drake's interpretation of YOLO because in the United States, having money gives an individual access to anything
and although the United States is a free country, money can give freedom and choices.
The phrase YOLO has been widely used by young adolescents in high school. According to NBC Chicago News article, "Students arrested following

on the general life on Cortez. 20 years later the corrido continued to be one of the favorite among Mexicans and in 1958, Americo Paredes told
Gregorio's life in a book called, With His Pistol in His Hand: A Border Balled and its Hero. Paredes helped to popularize the story and the corrido again
among the Mexican–American population in the United States. Paredes reintroduced Gregorio to the Anglos community which brings old history to

Henando Cortez And The Spanish Conquest Of The Aztecs
In the 15th century, the Europeans set sail from their home countries in hopes of finding new routes to use for trade. After a few wrong turns, the
Americas were discovered and the rumor of the wealth the Mesoamerican civilizations had attracted the Europeans. The Spanish were the first to set out
on an expedition to conquer this New World every one was speaking of. Henando Cortez was the Spanish conqueror that led the expedition to the
Americas, where the Spanish would encounter the Aztec empire. The Aztec empire was settled around their capital, Tenochtitlan, and was
surrounded by "towering pyramids and a network of canals spanned by bridges" (Hofstadter 11). The Aztecs were disciplined people with
standardized laws that provided structure to their empire. For their time period, the Aztecs were advanced in ways such as having knowledge of
astronomy and accurate calendars. The Aztec empire had a long future ahead of them until Cortez landed at Vera Cruz in April of 1519 with soldiers
and weapons that the Aztecs had never seen before. Cortez and the Spanish would conquer the Aztec empire after their capital fell to Cortez in 1521
resulting in an Aztec surrender. The Aztecs suffered a great number of deaths from the conquest and almost all that was left was women and children.
During the conquering of the Aztec empire the Spanish discovered the practice of human sacrifice. This significant discovery was first brought to the
attention of the Spanish after the Aztec ruler,

Gregorio Cortez And High Horse Similarities
There are men in the world that are completely different, but happen to have a few similarities. Gregorio Cortez and High Horse are two different
men but also have little in common. For one, Cortez is an outlaw and no matter how bad things are, he doesn't stop. On the other hand, High Horse
is a romantic, but doesn't give up because he knows who he loves and is willing to do whatever he has to for the girl he is going to marry. "And he
said he loved the girl so much that he was man enough to do anything Red Deer or anybody else could think up." Cortez and High Horse have one
similarity, which is truly believing in something. Thedifference between their beliefs is that Cortez believes he is unstoppable. "The Major Sheriff shot

Amy Cortez Change Analysis
The two parts of the work together are titled 'Change', created by Amy Cortez. The skull on the first butterfly is an odd contrast to the overall figure.
The work is very colorful and bright. The second butterfly is monochrome and flat, and hangs on a string from the ceiling.
The first component of the work is a butterfly shape with a raised neon green and orange skull in the center. It is in a black frame with a black
background. Colorful patterns radiate out from the skull onto the wings, first into leaves, and then to looping, wavy shapes. The leaves and skull are
shades of green, and the other colors are yellow, blue, pink, brown, and red. Small, repeating dark green semicircles outline the butterfly and extend to
the black background. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They do not attempt to represent these things as they are in nature, but still use recognizable shapes to signify them. The colorful butterfly is a collage
made of fabric paint, ribbon, and textured paper. On the colorful butterfly, the skull is meant to draw attention, as it is in the center of the work, slightly
raised, and is different colors than the wings. The irregular lines and organic shapes of the patterns radiate out from the skull, guiding the eye to the
butterfly outline. This butterfly is the plate used to create the second. The second, with an absence of color, gets the viewer's attention with its unusual
placement. It contrasts the first butterfly in both color and material. The eye is drawn to the darker elements in the center and the border.
The butterfly is often used as a symbol of rebirth, which connects with the title of "Change". The raised skull of the first butterfly evokes death, but its
bright, cheerful colors and central position seem to suggest that 'death' in this work is not to be feared, and is even necessary. The second butterfly,
hanging freely from the ceiling, is noticeably different from the first, again invoking the idea of change. Change here is then often painful, but it is
needed and can even be

Analysis Of The Song 'Cortez The Killer'
When using the song "Cortez the Killer" as a source on the European Conquistadors, a historian should consider what type of source it is, its creation
date, the author's origins, and how the Conquistadors are portrayed. A historian should consider these things because they might have an effect on the
credibility of the source and the type of information they can give, which refers to things such as perspective. Firstly, the song "Cortez the Killer" is a
secondary source written by Neil Young in 1975. A book by Neil's brother, Scott Young, informs us that Neil had no connection to the Aztecs or
Spanish. The song is a secondary source because it was written in 1975, well after the encounter between Montezuma and Cortez. This would tell a

Borders & Citizenship Rosalinda Castro Hispanics in the US– 8:00–10:05am Midterm PART A Ariana Ocho There cannot be a discussion about
borders without also discussing the metaphors that are linked to them. When speaking about the border people know the physical borderlines between
countries, but to understand borders one must look pass the physical boundaries. As a society we must be and make ourselves more aware of the
cultural identity, language, and community surrounding the Latino American population. During the Mexican–American War the border moved, but
the people didn't. History has shown us that no matter how thick the border might be Latino Americans have a strong connection to their culture and
roots; instead of assimilating, Mexicans live between two worlds. The film, Ballad of Gregorio Cortez gave us a perspective of two cultures; "Two
cultures– the Anglo and the Mexican– lived side by side in state of tension and fear" . Cortez is running for his life as he heads north, while the Anglo
believe that because of his Mexican ethnicity, he would travel south to Mexico. Throughout the film there were cultural tensions and
misunderstandings; language plays an important part of someone's identity, and for many Latino Americans Spanish is their first language. The Ballad
of Gregorio Cortez also shows us that language plays an important role, and can cause confusion between two different groups. For example, Anglos

The Conquistadors Ventured To The Americaв
Ђ™S In Approximately
The conquistadors ventured to the America's in approximately the 1500s. During the process of settlement the conquistadors, led by Hernan Cortez
encountered numerous natives who originally inhabited the land. When two unfamiliar civilizations encounter each other the end result can be
unpredictable. Each human being has an unique thought process. Therefore numerous spaniards viewed the native americans as a peaceful, and kind
civilization, while on the other side of the bridge, several spaniards like Hernan Cortez viewed the indians as a threat to their wellbeing. However,
Bartolome de las Casas viewed the native Indians in a different manner. Bartolome de las Casas viewed the natives as a genuinely kind civilization,

of the nature of the Indians. The nature of the Indians from Bartolome's standpoint was one that described the natives as kind, intelligent, and innocent
people, but he also uses the words weak and complacent to describe them. Subsequently he describes the living arrangements of the native americans.
They dressed very lightly, almost completely naked, they do not own beds, however they sleep on bambacas. Bambacas, to put it in simplest form are
hammocks. Afterwards, Bartolome informs that the indians were not rejective of Christianity, the religion of the spanish. In fact they were jubilant and
intrigued to participate in the faith. The natives insisted in partaking in the sacraments. He then reminds the audience of the goodness the native people
possessed. Next, he begins to describe the invasion of the conquistadors who ransacked the civilizations, describing the awful actions of the spaniards.

Analysis Of The Log From The Sea Of Cortez
Enduring Perspectives
By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics, qualities, and perspectives regarding America's
landscape. Many of these still persist today in either the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today
in various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez, and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea
of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to Rainy Mountain describe this effect.
Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac's economy revolved
around trading small animals (e.g. beavers). Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant 13). A
problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal's population is being depleted until it is too late.
The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to
fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the horse
arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less sustainable because they became dependent on the
horse and buffalo population. Again, this is a problem because it is difficult

Comparing Cortez And Columbus
Cortez was born on 1485, Medellin in western Spain. He originally studied in law, but decided to find fame and wealth in exploring. He travelled to
Cuba, and then became the leader of an expedition to explore Mexico. He was to convert the natives of Mexico to God, he was also to bring back
gold to Europe from Mexico. Cortez and Columbus were very much alike; they both wanted fame and wealth and looked for it in exploration.
These men did succeed in their quest, but they did not do it the way they had planned it out. They both have very controversial pasts; looking back
people even wonder if they were good, Or evil? Cortez started his voyage to Mexico, by persuading Velazquez to allow him to lead his own expedition
to find wealth in Mexico. Velazquez... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a white god coming from the east; Cortez used this to instill fear into his opponents. Once Cortez made it to the Aztecs, Montezuma welcomed Cortez
into his city with wide open arms and bearing gifts. Cortez was treated very well there, and he found all of the riches he was looking for. But he found

Hernan Cortez Accomplishments
Did you know that past explorers were known to travel for riches and fame? They just wanted to be known, and be able to say they were there, and
seen many things; or the accomplishments they have made. For instance, Hernan Cortez was born in 1485 in Medellin, Spain. He was a Spanish
conquistador who defeated the Aztec Empire and claimed Mexico for Spain. He also studied at the university of Salamanca. In 1504, he traveled to
Santo Domingo and settled in a town called Azua and served as a notary. In 1515, he joined the expedition of Cuba led by Diego Velazquez and
served as the mayor of Santiago. In 1518, he set sail to Mexico with eleven ships and five hundred men. By 1519, he reached the Mexican coast.
Some hardships Cortez faced included him becoming allies with natives, and others. he used deadly force to conquer Mexico. He fought Tiaxacan and
Cholula warriors. He marched to Tenochtitlan and captured the ruler Montezuma II., although , he had to leave because the Spanish troops were
coming to arrest him for disobeying orders. But he did return later because the Spanish was set out by the Aztecs. In 1515, he conquered the Aztecs
and King Charles appointed him to be the governor of New Spain. Some interesting facts about Hernan Cortez was that after he conquered the Aztecs,
his authority and position was questioned, and they also formed a rebellion against him. Between 1540–1547, he spent time being recognized for his
achievements, and support from the Spanish royal courts. Unlike modern day explorers like Neil Armstrong who studies science and have passion for
things in space.
Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. After serving as naval
aviator from 1949 to 1952 he joined the National Advisory Committee Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955. His first assignment was with NACA Lewis
research center (NASA) in Cleveland. Over the next 17 years he was an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and administrator for NACA and its successor

Analysis Of Music In The Ballad Of Gregorio Cortez
Music is sound organized by humans; audible statement that mirrors a way of life or a way of thinking; a language spoken directly, without translation,
between people who understand. In this class we studied liberal arts, and how it uses general intellectual development rather than opposed training, to
develop a musical analysis of music such as "The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez". To develop an analysis, we group the organization of music into five
musical elements rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, and form, and we find some type of organization or order in these pieces like pulse and
background instruments to help identify these elements. The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez genre is a corrido, which is a Mexican/ Mexican American
popular narrative song and poetry form. The sorry of the corrido is when Cortina became a Mexican hero when he shot a deputy/ marshal in the
1850's for the mistreating one of his mother's young servants. This incident led to an open conflict with the American authorities. This story
represented the struggles that the people were facing in the region and Cortez's ability to evade capture. This corrido was taken place in American in
Texas along the Mexico border. He was captured for the murders that he committed and was sentenced to life in prison. The first Musical element that
was included in the class was rhythm. Rhythm is an element of music that deals with the arrangement of sound and silences in relation to time. To

Ever since humanity could interact with one another, we would gather among ourselves and share stories. As time went on these same stories were
passed down from generation to generation, changing the contents of the story ever so slightly. These stories were called legends and folktales. They
share a half true story about a hero tackling an obstacle, these stories are typically important because they share a meaning and symbolizes
characteristics from a certain culture in which they originate form. In With a Pistol in His Hands, Americo Paredes compares both the legend of
Gregorio Cortez and the actual real–life events in order to point out the differences in hope that it would shed light of the injustice that
Mexican–Americans endured during this time. One difference is the nature of the character of Gregorio Cortez. In "The Legend" it discusses many of

Guns In School Julio Cortez

  • 1. Guns In School Julio Cortez Guns in School? In the December 25, 2012 article published in USA Today, "Editorial: Gun Lobby, Don't Change the Subject," author Julio Cortez talks about armed teachers and security guards as solutions to protect our children in school. He states that the NRA's Wayne LaPierre "makes it sound so simple; hire armed guards for every school in America." Cortez says the NRA's attempt to introduce more weapons is a tactic to distract from the serious debate about firearms. America has just as much mental illness as other countries and the same amount of violence in the media. More guns are what make this country dangerous, but the Supreme Court has ruled twice, that the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to own a firearm. The court, however; has allowed bans on assault weapons and firearms with large magazines. That being said, since this nation isn't about to relinquish their right to bear arms anytime soon, armed forces posted at schools seems like a good idea. Although gun–packing teacher sounds a little ludicrous. Cortez ... He shot and killed 17 students and the one school teacher. Before emergency responders showed up Hamilton had shot himself. This tragedy and two others (not school shootings however) sparked up a public interest to have tighter restrictions on the ownership of firearms. Handguns more specifically, the type that Hamilton used in his attack. The original ban outlawed all cartridge ammunition handguns with the exception of a .22 calibre single shot. Upon new legislation, the remaining .22 cartridge handguns were also banned in the Firearms Act 1997. This ban does not affect Northern Ireland, the Isles of Man, or the Channel Islands. • 2. Spanish Conquest Essay Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs Have you ever about ripping out a human's still beating heart? If not, you would not fit in with the Aztecs. The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican Empire that rose in power in the post classic period. From the 1300's –1521, the Aztecs continued to increase their population and their influence in the Mesoamerican region, despite the upcoming nearby empires, such as the Tlaxcalan empire. This all changed with the arrival of the Spaniard, Hernan Cortez. Cortez was a Spanish conquistador under the rule of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Cortez contributed for the downfall of many empires, including the Aztecs. Even though conquering was not a part of the Catholics religion. The ancient Aztecs followed their religious beliefs more closely than did the Spanish Catholic Hernan Cortez. Unlike the Spanish, The Aztecs believed that there were many gods that contributed to everyday life patron god, Huitzilopochtli, communicated to the Aztec priest, Motecuhzuma, that it was time to migrate to another region. He said that there would be an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And they fought with everything they had. The Aztecs just wanted to protect their home. So, they did not back down. But it was not enough to stop Cortez and his men's advanced weapons; it was a massacre. And it was not the only time Cortez and his men killed. Before their arrival in Tenochtitlan, Cortez only had about 500 men who followed him. And he knew that the Aztecs had hundreds of thousands of soldiers at their disposal. So, Cortez invaded outside villages and forced men to join him. If they refused he would kill them and their family. Displaying how little the Catholic law means to him. Because in the bible, one of the first laws given was "thou shalt not kill." They have both made bad decisions that has led them to where they are now. Dorner got called many rude names for being a black person, he suffered all through his childhood and most of his adulthood. In the Manhunt for Christopher Dorner, chapter 2, it states, "In first grade at Norwalk Christian School, he wrote, the principal swatted him for punching a student who had taunted him with a racial slur. The swattings from authority figures continued through junior high, he claimed, when he dared to stand up to bigots." Throughout his life, there were many things said to him that he didn't like, even when he arrived at the LAPD. In chapter 3, it states, "When he arrived at the LAPD, he wrote, he found it a nest of racists. In the Police Academy, he complained about another recruit's use of a racial slur and was shunned." • 4. Cortez Observation In this journal I learned or had reinforced: Going about my day I need to pay attention to my gestures and simple hand movements when I'm around others. Especially when I'm trying to make a good first impression on someone. Avoiding signals that would imply laziness, nervousness, anxiety, or shyness are key to being successful at the first impression. Some observations made about Cortez in the short time given include he is a very outspoken individual, highly confident in himself, and shows maturity in his actions. He has his close friends he sticks around, but he isn't afraid to branch out occasionally and he also takes a stand for ideas that he is certain about to insure others are informed of his knowledge. Not knowing anything about him academically, it seems it could be inferred he does well with his studies. It was overheard in class that he had a multiple classes with Mrs. Minton so going out on a limb it could be said Cortez is seeking a degree in communications or a business and will use these classes to help him help others in the workforce.... • 5. Conquest Of Aztecs Essay Within the religious aspect of the Western Civilization, there were specific omens reported after the Conquest of Aztec. Most of the omes were disasters and people didn't know whether to believe them or not, according to the document Omens of Doom. An example of a religious omen recorded was Omen 1. In this omen it was said that: "According to legend, the Aztecs believed that the god Quetzalcoatl had sailed east to join the sun god, warning that he would later return to reclaim his kingdom. The Aztecs believed that this could occur in the year One Reed (1519) and that god could take on many different forms. Including a pale skinned, bearded man." When Moctezuma first met Cortez, Cortez went to show his grattitude when all of a sudden Moctezuma's two guards stopped him. Moctezuma was not allowed to be touched. When Cortez was able to speak with Moctezuma he took off his necklace of pearls and placed it around Moctezuma's neck. Walking down the street a little later, two servants came up and gave Cortez two necklesses. • 8. Summary Of ' An American Folk Tale ' By Americo Paredes With His Pistol in His Hand by Americo Paredes is an American folk tale about taking place in 1901 along the Texas Mexico border. Paredes tells the story of Gregorio Cortez a Mexican farmer living on the south Texas Border who was made a hero by his people. The second novel is that of Chester Himes ' If He Hollers Let Him Go. Both stories deal with the issues of violence and racism, although in very different ways. Based on both works, I believe that Bob Jones' figure leaves a more lasting and long–term consequence of racism. Chester Himes' novel about Bob Jones has somewhat of an autobiographical touch to it. It is more persuasive in the way that, he and Bob have a lot in common. Even though Paredes' character focuses on a real character he is made into a fictional, whereas Bob Jones may or may not be representative of some of the author 's actual experiences were, leaven the reader or audience with a longer lasting impression of the hardship during those times. Gregorio Cortez was an unknown man until 1901.He was considered an outlaw but was also a likeable young man according to others. Cortez had never been in trouble with the law. Cortez was one of three sons, and he lived on a farm with his parents. Cortez only occasionally had some disputes with American farmers. There is one short ladder before you get to Cliff Palace, and then there is a very long ladder when you leave Cliff Palace. Bring water when you come to Mesa Verde, even in the morning. Spanish Conquistadors: The Aztec-Spanish War The Aztec–Spanish War was more than a war leading to the demise of the Aztec empire; rather it was one of the most remarkable and significant wars of European history, beginning the colonization of Mesoamerica. The Spaniards who came to the New World were known as conquistadors, Spanish for "conquerors". Hernando Cortez, one of the most ambitious Spanish conquistadors, left Cuba in 1519 with 500 men, 11 ships, horses, and countless other provisions. The exploratory mission, supported by the governor of Cuba: Diego de VelГЎsquez, soon turned into one of conquest. Driven by the pursuit of gold, glory and god, Cortez was determined to use any means necessary in his desire to conquer one of ancient history's most prominent civilizations: The Aztecs.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Spanish conquistadors wanted to convert the Aztecs to their Christian faith. There are three main theories of how the Spaniards converted the Aztecs. The first theory was the belief that the Aztecs suspected Cortez to be a god returning to claim his lands. The second theory was that the Spaniards forced the Aztecs to convert to Christianity. The last theory was the belief that Spanish missionaries blended the Native and Christian religion to easily convert the Aztecs. During this blend of religious ideas, however, many Spaniards, intrigued with the customs of the Aztecs, adopted some beliefs of the Aztecs, fusing these beliefs into their own religious practices. The combination of all three theories eventually caused the conversion of the Aztecs to Christianity. The Aztecs first viewed these acts of conversion as attacks on their ideology, but most Aztecs succumbed to the Spaniard's conversion tactics. After the Aztec–Spanish war, Aztecs who wished to become Catholic were allowed to retain the assets of their property, which was a major incentive. Catholicism became the religion of Mesoamerica, as it is to this day. The Spanish were the first to set out on an expedition to conquer this New World every one was speaking of. Henando Cortez was the Spanish conqueror that led the expedition to the Americas, where the Spanish would encounter the Aztec empire. The Aztec empire was settled around their capital, Tenochtitlan, and was surrounded by "towering pyramids and a network of canals spanned by bridges" (Hofstadter 11). Analysis Of The Movie ' Ballad Of Gregorio Cortez ' Borders & Citizenship Rosalinda Castro Hispanics in the US– 8:00–10:05am Midterm PART A Ariana Ocho There cannot be a discussion about borders without also discussing the metaphors that are linked to them. When speaking about the border people know the physical borderlines between countries, but to understand borders one must look pass the physical boundaries. As a society we must be and make ourselves more aware of the cultural identity, language, and community surrounding the Latino American population. During the Mexican–American War the border moved, but the people didn't. History has shown us that no matter how thick the border might be Latino Americans have a strong connection to their culture and roots; instead of assimilating, Mexicans live between two worlds. The film, Ballad of Gregorio Cortez gave us a perspective of two cultures; "Two cultures– the Anglo and the Mexican– lived side by side in state of tension and fear" . Cortez is running for his life as he heads north, while the Anglo believe that because of his Mexican ethnicity, he would travel south to Mexico. Throughout the film there were cultural tensions and misunderstandings; language plays an important part of someone's identity, and for many Latino Americans Spanish is their first language. The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez also shows us that language plays an important role, and can cause confusion between two different groups. For example, Anglos refer to a male ... • 34. Analysis Of The Log From The Sea Of Cortez Enduring Perspectives By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics, qualities, and perspectives regarding America's landscape. Many of these still persist today in either the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez, and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to Rainy Mountain describe this effect. Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac's economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers). Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant 13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal's population is being depleted until it is too late. The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the horse arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less sustainable because they became dependent on the horse and buffalo population.
