Retro Organics
Mr Robin Greer, Gore, NZ
Mr Robin Greer operates his own Organic Farm with his wife Lowis Greer in
Gore, a town in the lower South Island, New Zealand. Their business is named
Retro Organics, where the Greer’s produce mainly milk and cheese. The Organic
Farming means the Greer’s don’t use any chemicals, pesticides or insecticides for
farming. Their fence post are even organic, they use either untreated wooden posts,
steel or concrete. The couple switched from Dairy Farming after their both their
fathers passed away because of liver cancer. Robin and Lowis believe that cancer is
partly caused by whats in your food, so they wanted to produce better food
organically.
My teacher Mrs S saw the T.V programme ‘Rural Delivery’ in which the Greer’s
farm was part of. Our topic is Our Living World, and Mrs S thought that learning
about Retro Organics would tie in nicely with this terms topic.
Skyping Robin Greer
On 2nd of June at 11am, the two classes in my syndicate skyped Robin to find out
more about Retro Organics and farming organically.
We asked lots of different questions. Below are some of the questions my class
asked:
- How has technology helped with the marketing of your products and the
establishment of your business?
- What makes your farm organic?
- What type of cheese is the hardest ot make and why?
- Which type of cancer did your father die of?
- On average, how much cheese do you make a day?
- What do you do to keep your stock healthly instead of chemical drenches?
- What is the biggest benefit of farming organically?
- Is it easy running an organic farm?
- How has the change to organic farming affected your income?
We found out a lot of information from Robin and I though that the Skype session
was very worthwhile.
