1. MACRO: overall representations
created.
MICRO: details that hint at macro
representation.
The Macro representations we would like to create for our
male protagonist character are loneliness and longing for
our female character who is the antagonist in the narrative.
In order to create these overall representations we are
focusing on specific cinematogophry: for instance the male
will be isolated in the internal shots to highlight his lack of
social contact since the breakdown of his relationship. To
create the suggestion that our male character still longs for
our female, we have decided to use over the shoulder shots
showing Jeff watching Zoe and shots from Jeff's point of
view so the viewer feels like they are watching Zoe from
Jeff's perspective.

2. LOCATIONS
INTERNAL
Bedroom: it is an intimate and secure environment so showing him alone there emphasises his reflection on the
finished relationship which increases the audiences empathy for our male protagonist. The intimacy of the
environment is again shown however this time with both Jeff and Zoe together; this helps to contrast the situations
of post and pre breakup.
Shower: suggests he is washing away his feelings and sadness which again highlights his vulnerability creating
sympathy from the viewer.
Party: this is a happy positive atmosphere shown through the high key lighting which reflects their relationship
when they were happy together.
EXTERNAL
Busy Road: the hectic surrounding contrasts with the shot of Jeff walking alone therefore creating the
representation of him being isolated and insignificant in comparison to the environment around him. Moreover
showing both characters in the busy environment highlights they are both alone however have different feelings
regarding the situation which is further shown by the opposite directions in which they walk.
Car: it is a place where our male character feels like he can escape which we want to demonstrate through a shot of
Jeff driving away in the car.

3. PROPS
Lipstick: is a symbol of vanity and provides the opportunity to mask
a persons true identity so by having Zoe apply the lipstick, it creates
the representation of her moving on from the relationship by hiding
her feelings. This contrasts to our males approach and we have
highlighted their differences by placing the shot of Zoe applying
makeup straight after Jeff in the shower where he is ‘washing away
his sadness’.

4. Costume
Zoe: (antagonist) will be wearing a black dress, leather
jacket and carrying black heels when she walks down the
road as a reference to the lyric line “Guess I’m no good at
a one night stand” which is why her clothes are ones you
would wear on a night out. This sexual representation is
typical of a pop genre music video as it creates the male
gaze on Zoe. The choice of the colour black connotes her
danger and cynicism of their broken relationship.
In the internal shot of Zoe applying lipstick she is wearing
a silk dressing gown which again emphasises her sexuality.
However in the post breakup shots Zoe is wearing similar
clothes to the flashback shots which suggest she is happy
getting on with her life and is no longer hindered by the
same feelings Jeff is experiencing. Bu the subtle leather
jacket still hints at a slight danger surrounding her
character. The clothes which are ‘normal’ to her could also
reflect her treatment of Jeff is also ‘normal’ in her mind.
Jeff: (protagonist) will be wearing black in the
external shots to reflect his sadness as black
stereotypically connotes mourning. In one of
the flashback shots with Zoe Jeff will be
wearing a shirt which contrasts to the tracksuit
bottoms he will seen to be wearing in the
reflective internal shots. This noticeable
change is a clear representation of the
deterioration of his character.

5. Lighting
Internal Shots: low key lighting to reflect
sadness and intimacy. However the flashback
shots have high key lighting to emphasise
their happiness.
External Shots: high key lighting to show that
life has carried on and suggests Zoe especially
is happy once more.
