The First Date by Daniel Johnson (Inspired By True Events)
Character development through cinematography
1.
2. Extreme long shot which I used to emphasize the
character’s isolation
Wide shot which I used to show the character’s
role in the certain environment as he stands in a
wilderness , visually far from the comfort of
civilization
3. A medium wide shot used to give a
better view of the character’s size and
body language as he is presented in a
dark and seemingly cruel world
A medium close up which I used to show
the character from close distance while still
giving attention to his clothing as it could
indicate his personality
4. Close up shot to represent the characters facial
expression and his apparent frustration
An extreme close up to emphasize the
character’s emotions
5. In the opening of the story the character is represented as imprisoned as we can see his
surroundings and the way he stands in the picture’s environment. An extreme long shot is used
in order to emphasize the character’s helplessness . Furthermore the shot shows him headed to
what seems like an exit to the outer world which indicates hope. In the next scene the character
appears to have escaped the cage of his and is represented as being stronger than before due to
the low angle shot usage. The wide shot helps to build the background and show how the
character stands in the face of nature with the city being in the far distance further suggesting
the isolation and loneliness of the person. The third shot sees the character surrounded by
darkness with just the tiny bit of hope fading away in the form of the sunset. He seems to have
embraced this side of him and rather emerges from the dark. A medium shot is used in order to
capture both the outline of his upper body and the sunset in the lower part of the scene. In the
next shot we finally get a glance of the character from a closer distance and how he seems with
a rather mysterious and dark personality as his outfit and facial expression suggests. His
apparent use of mask to cover his mouth gives emphasis on his eyes and the depth of his sight.
His clothing does not blend in with the natural surrounding but rather opposes it. A medium
close up is used in order to capture both his clothing, facial expression and background. In the
next shot , the close up presents the character in a rather passionate and savage mode as he
strives to embrace each challenge with the determination which is clearly present in his
emotions as well as the fighting gloves which further suggest he’s facing a difficult fight in this
case metaphorically as for him it’s an inner fight. In the last picture , the extreme close up
focuses on the character’s emotions which seemed hidden or non existent for most of the
scenes. The teary eye and rather frustrated look suggests the character has given up and has
lost his battle or has more specifically lost himself.

vs nature type of scenery as the character’s clothing and body language differs from his
surrounding of rich naturalistic view. The plot focuses on the inner struggles and development
of the character over a certain amount of time. The difference in locations and clothing
suggest that it was a story that took place over a long period of time.
