A presentation I created to introduce the philosophy of agile to my team. The focus is on how you differentiate your day-to-day operations work from what it's like to work on a truly collaborative, cross-functional team. All rights belong to their respective owners. See Notes Section for more detailed speaker notes.
11. How do we know it’s a Boss
• Lots of uncertainty and unknowns
• Frequently changing requirements
• Incremental value can be delivered over time
• Work benefits from frequent user feedback
• Requires or benefits from an array of expertise
• Leverages innovation and creativity

Editor's Notes
Who are these guys?
Team of warriors
Shared goal of defending earth from the evil of Rita Repulsa and her army of putties
Each has their own strength
Each strength is used to fight the bad guys
As a team they coordinate their efforts toward their shared goal
In order to succeed at winning the war
At times they have to fight their own independent battles in pursuit of the common goal
- The mighty morphin talent team
- Just like the rangers, each with a super power
- And as a team, our goal is to defeat the bad guys that stand in our way of building the best organization in the world
- As the rangers do, we are most often required to fight independently
- though always coordinating to our common goal
- Sometimes we may even tag team a battle, but even then it's two people acting independently
- Fighting this way is important, because it's the only way we can sustain and cover all the fronts in the war of talent
- Sometimes though, the rangers face an enemy that is so strong that even all 5 coordinating together just isn't enough
- What do they do then? How can they overcome such a challenge?
- That's right, they summon the megazord!
- They are no longer 5 individuals fighting together
- Instead, they invoke the power of the megazord
- Which combines all of their powers into a single powerful force strong enough to defeat the boss
- They no longer are expressing each of their own identities
- They are acting in unison, as one wholly integrated unit
- Though fighting this way isn't always the best answer
- The megazord wouldn't be the right weapon to fight the putties
- The rangers only call upon this power in the right situations
- So what do we do when we face our boss monsters?
- That's right, it's AGILE
- We transform into a single powerful force
- no longer focused on our individual strengths
- Acting as one to conquer the challenge in front of us
- But when that big challenge is over, we will return to our form of being individuals using each of our own powers to win the war of talent
- Just like the megazord, Agile is not always the right tool for the job
- It's as easy for us to know when we are facing a big boss monster
- So how can we tell? How do when know with Agile is the right tool for the job?
- no hard and fast rules but we can follow these guidelines
Day to day, continuous operations of running a live service
Most of the time we can work independently but as a team, with the shared goal
Sometimes though, when we encounter a problem too great, we need to call upon the power of agile
We morph into a cross-functional team where we shed our “jobs” and become unified to defeat the foe
We are all “team members” no matter what our day-to-day role might be
- We can integrate our agile development process right along side our live service operations
Our agile development work may expand our offerings over time
We may have new roles involved in our live service but that won’t ever prevent us from calling on our agile powers
