PP Module 3.6. Part 3 – A proposal  23 March 2010 Ronan McCrea
This semester: A RE-CAP Part 1.  Share your Semester 1 assignment.  Group presentations “Public Art / Art in the Public Realm”  Part 2. Writing a proposal / application.  Write a proposal to create a project in the area of Public Art / Art in Public Realm. This will consist of an expression of interest, an description of your practice, how you intend to approach the context.   Create texts for documentation / application / proposal package. C(Based on Public art briefs, Arts Council &  PHF requirements)  Part 3. Photographing artworks (after Easter)  Photographing artworks and installations. Shooting and image preparation (Adobe Photoshop) Discuss other forms of documentation: video, audio clips, booklets, print-outs documentation packages, websites.
Part 1: Sharing ‘Public Art / Art in Public Realm’ assignments. Break into teams of 4 people.  	Students self select teams based on assignments.  Each team will create a 15 minute ‘PowerPoint’    presentation the issue of ‘public art / art in the public realm’ drawing on your assignments.  3 presentations with be made each week over four weeks between 16th Feb to  9th March (OVER RUN)
Part 2.   The Proposal.  Lecture and brief 16th March  “ Working as an artist in the context of society not only requires special artistic talents and specific interests, but also high social and communicative abilities, endurance, and the desire and ability to reflect and form theories. Artists who want to develop and successfully realize their concepts, strategies, and ways of working in the framework of various living-environments or in interrelation to systems of expertise are expected to understand non-artistic questions, problems, and prejudices, to respond to these professionally, and to ground the relevance of their own work.”  (Berlin University of the Arts)  ‘The Proposal’ suggest four possible starting points:  Artistic work with social groups.  Artistic work with cultural institutions ( Public spaces, Museum/Curatorial practices) Artistic work in public space Artistic work in the context of media and scientific visual production
Part 3: Photographic documentationWorkshop begins 27th April  How to photograph a painting or work on paper.    (2D copy work) How to photograph an installation or exhibition (ambient light)  How to prepare digital photographic images for use.  (Adobe Photoshop)  Prepare slide list and documentation pack. Looking at various applications –  projects, funding, academic, web, publication.
Assessments: Out of a possible 100 % (100 marks)  20 marks available for  Part 1.  Share your Semester 01 assignments. As part of a team you will make a 15 minute presentation to the group based on your research in Semester 01 on the topic of “Public Art / Art in the Public Realm.” 40 marks available for Part 2. Writing a proposal / application.  Write a proposal to create a project in the area of Public Art / Art in Public Realm. This will consist of an expression of interest, an description of your practice, how you intend to approach the context.    A full brief will be issued.  40 marks available for Part 3. Photographing artworks You will create a series of flat copy work and installation photographs  a high technical standard, (composition, focus, depth of field, colour balance, consistency) accompanied with clear image list (amended).  A Full brief  will be issued.
Next week… Assignment: “Part 2, a proposal”  The Brief.  For this part if the module, you are going to need to visualise yourself as a practicing professional artist.  You will select a context in the public realm, which you wish to professionally engage with.  You can select any  ‘per cent for art scheme’ commission or a self –initiated project in the public sphere.  A “per cent for art scheme” commission for the Loreto National School Gorey is also offered as an option.  In attempting to secure this professional opportunity you will need to first produce the following documents:
1.	 AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST in the form of a letter of intent will cover the following areas: ,[object Object]
Outline why you think you are suitable and should be shortlisted for consideration for this project or commission
How, in broad and general terms, you would approach the project. (In short:  who are you, what are you bringing to the table, what are you offering as an artist in this particular context? This should not be longer that two A4 pages in length, preferably one A4 page. )
2. A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR WORK: Please give a brief description of your practice as an artist, providing a context to the visual support material you will supply. (not exceeding 500words). Please bear in mind that members of the panel may not be familiar with yourwork and this description should therefore offer them a valuable insight.
Stage 1. Tuesday April 13th  - Bring first draft of documents to class. You will break into small groups and share your work, in order to improve and correct documents.    Stage 2. Tuesday April 20th  - Bring 2nd draft of documents to class, share, discuss and make a note of changes and improvements,    Stage 3. Submit final documents for assessment at end of semester. Deadline 17th May 2010.   * * *   In Part 3 of this module, beginning on 27 April, we will look at photographing artwork for ‘support material’ that would accompany the above documents.
There are two aims of this Assignment: To reflect on and improve the use of the English language in pursuit of professional opportunities.    To consider how we introduce an artistic practice in order to create or secure professional opportunities in the sphere of ‘public art / art in the public realm.’     Assesment:  40 % of this module’s marks are available for Assignment. (See below)
