In the 5 th century B.C., Herodotus tells us, the king of Persia decided to attack the Greeks. All his advisors applauded except a certain Artabanus who pointed to 2 problems: the land and the sea. 2500 years later, a different form of attack is taking place: the expansion of the human species as a whole and the takeover by our species of the surface of the Earth. This is a process very different from a military invasion but the results may be far more devastating. Like Artabanus 2500 years ago, Elizabeth Kolbert points to the land and the sea. The Sixth Extinction
In the book, The Sixth Extinction, Kolbert challenges the general unawareness of historic disbelief in mass extinction that has been talked about prior to the late 1700s, a period which the scientific communities failed to reason, let alone envision living in a planet with a powerful force capable of wiping out life in a massive scale. According to her, the unbelief fosters ideologies that no natural force can be powerful enough to trigger the extinction of species on a massive scale because of the threats that human post on Earth to the species. Therefore, she uses scientific research references to argue that the behavior of human species is disrupting the balanced and interconnected Earth's systems to the possibility of causing extinction not only of non-human species but to humans as well. Such behavior includes burning fossil fuels. Some of the significant areas likely to cause mass extinction due to unprecedented human behavior are the global atmosphere, the heat absorption by the sea, the water cycle, and the acidity of the ocean, effects on soil moisture and the extension of drought conditions.
The Sixth Extinction presumes that unless checked, there is eminent destruction of plant life by pests and unmanageable heat stress due to problems in heat regulation, among other related challenges. To be precise, Kolbert makes it clear that in the current century, manmade activities will lead to the elimination of up to 50% of species that currently live in the earth. In explicating the argument that Kolbert puts across in her book, The Sixth Extinction, this paper seeks to examine the organization of the chapters, as well as, how the information in these chapters explains the disruption of the Earth’s system, as a threat to creatures that live in sea and land. This is done when noting any strengths and weaknesses in the argument to determine the credibility of the stance that Kolbert takes in her book.
The book is generally arranged into 13 chapters. The chapters are topically denoted and begin with the first chapter laying ground for her belief in the possibility of mass extinction. The subsequent chapters give historical as well as scientific backing of her conviction. These include The Mastodon’s Molars in chapter two; The Original Penguin; The Luck of the Ammonites; and Welcome to the Anthropocene in chapters three to five respectively. The chapters following these backup chapters are used by the author to point at apparent areas directly or indirectly affected by human behavior threatening extinction. These include the sea (chapter six and seven), and land (chapters eight to twelve).
In the concluding chapter 13 (The Things with Feathers), focus is on the efforts taken to facilitation promotion of conservation and preservation of species on land and sea. However, she ends with a rather definite fact that whichever the actions taken by humanity, the evolutionary pathways are fully drawn on which sp.

In my last lecture, I discussed the development of Greek civilization in the Greek peninsula. In
this lecture, we're going to discuss the expansion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean
and beyond. This expanded Greek culture created what is known as Hellenistic civilization. Just
a quick review-- in my last lecture, I explained that Greek civilization started with the Minoan
civilization, then developed into the Mycenaean civilization. The Greeks experienced a dark age
during which everyone was fighting with each other and laying claim to territory that evolved
into independent city-states. And after this, Greek civilization saw two ages-- an archaic age, and
a classical age. These ages are Athens formed a democracy and Sparta formed an oligarchy. This
was also when the Greeks fought the Persians and won and then turned to fight each other in the
Peloponnesian War.
[SLIDE] During the archaic and classical ages, which took place between 750 and 338 BCE,
large numbers of Greeks from different city-states left their homeland to settle in distant lands. In
that, so many Greek communities were established in southern Italy that the Romans later called
this area "Magna Graecia" or "Great Greece" because so many Greeks lived there. [SLIDE]
Greek settlements were also established in southern France, eastern Spain, and Egypt, and west
of Egypt, throughout Northern Africa. And in the east, the Greeks settled along the shores of the
Black Sea in what is today, Turkey. On the map on your screen, the green shading represents the
Greek colonies in the east and the west. The Greeks settled in other lands, primarily to make
money through trade. The Greeks traded their pottery, wine, and olive oil for the resources in
these new areas. They obtained grain, metals, fish, timber, wheat, and slaves. Wherever the
Greeks went, they took their culture. But even though the Greeks introduced their culture to a lot
of different people in the archaic and classical ages, this was nothing in comparison to what
would happen in the fourth century BCE. Beginning in the 300s BCE, new rulers built the
biggest empire the world had seen up to this point. And they carried Greek culture to the far
reaches of the Earth. In doing so, they established a new civilization-- the Hellenistic civilization.
This civilization existed from 323 BCE to 31 BCE.
[SLIDE] So our questions for this lecture are, who were the Macedonians? And how did they
conquer the Greeks and other civilizations? How did Macedonian rulers spread Greek culture in
the Hellenistic world? And how did the development of Hellenistic civilization impact Greek
culture?

Read the following scenario and analyze how this situation should be handled:
John, a health management student completing an internship at Memorial Hospital, has been appointed chair of a multidisciplinary clinical taskforce by the hospital's CEO. The taskforce will design a new operational system to reduce the waiting time of patients entering the hospital's emergency room (ER). Although John had no clinical experience, he had successfully completed a course in operations management prior to beginning his internship and was excited to apply his new knowledge for solving a "real" problem for the hospital.
The hospital CEO told John that when a patient entered the hospital's ER, it could take up to eight hours from the time the patient was initially triaged by a nurse to the time the patient was either discharged home or admitted as an inpatient by the physician. The CEO said, "Due to quality of patient care issues, this timeframe is unacceptable and the taskforce needs to come up with solutions to this problem. My goal is to reduce the "turnaround" time for the patient from eight hours to two hours."
Prior to being assigned as the chair of this taskforce, John had informally observed the operations of the hospital's ER and noted that many of the bottlenecks causing patient care delays were caused by operational issues such as nurses filling out duplicate forms and a lack of communication between the hospital departments (for example, radiology) when the ER physicians ordered tests or were waiting for test results to confirm their diagnoses. These bottlenecks caused a slow turnover of the ER's examination rooms and unnecessary paperwork resulting in the ineffective use of both the physicians' and nurses' time.
In addition to John, the CEO assigned Dr. Smith, the medical director of the hospital's ER, and Mary, the ER nurse manager, to the taskforce. As chair of the taskforce, John scheduled an initial meeting for 10:00 a.m., the following Monday. The Case “Doe v. City of Intrusia”:
Trouble was brewing in the small, quiet city of Intrusia. Someone was selling methamphetamine to the local teenagers and a popular football player died after an overdose. The community was panicked and demanded that the police find the source of the meth and shut it down immediately. The police suspected that 20 year old Joe Doe was selling the meth but they didn’t have much evidence.
The state prosecutor advised the police department to talk with the local cell phone carrier about “cloning” Mr. Doe’s phone. The cell phone carrier created a “clone” phone which allowed the police to read text messages sent and received by Mr. Doe. In no time the police had evidence implicating Mr. Doe as a dealer and the location of the meth lab. Mr. Doe was convicted and the meth lab was closed.
Mr. Doe is appealing his conviction, claiming that the interception of text messages violated the unreasonable search and seizure protections of the Fourth Amendment. Furthermore, all evidence from the text messages should have been excluded from his trial.
The City of Intrusia argues that there was no physical intrusion into Mr. Doe’s space and that police were acting quickly in order to uphold their duty to protect the community’s safety.
Background:
In Silverman v. United States the Supreme Court held that that the Fourth Amendment does not protect conversations, therefore wiretapping does not constitute a search and seizure. The case was reversed in Katz v. United States, when Justice Harlan proposed a two pronged test of whether public actions should be considered private and therefore protected. 1) Has the person exhibited an expectation of privacy? and 2) is the expectation of privacy one that society is prepared to recognize as 'reasonable.'
In more recent decisions, the Supreme Court has found that society is not prepared to extend privacy rights to bank customers regarding their bank statements and that society was not prepared to recognize a privacy right-to grow a backyard crop of marijuana.

Trouble was brewing in the small, quiet city of Intrusia. Someone was selling methamphetamine to the local teenagers and a popular football player died after an overdose. The community was panicked and demanded that the police find the source of the meth and shut it down immediately. The police suspected that 20 year old Joe Doe was selling the meth but they didn’t have much evidence.
The state prosecutor advised the police department to talk with the local cell phone carrier about “cloning” Mr. Doe’s phone. The cell phone carrier created a “clone” phone which allowed the police to read text messages sent and received by Mr. Doe. In no time the police had evidence implicating Mr. Doe as a dealer and the location of the meth lab. Mr. Doe was convicted and the meth lab was closed.
Mr. Doe is appealing his conviction, claiming that the interception of text messages violated the unreasonable search and seizure protections of the Fourth Amendment. Furthermore, all evidence from the text messages should have been excluded from his trial.
The City of Intrusia argues that there was no physical intrusion into Mr. Doe’s space and that police were acting quickly in order to uphold their duty to protect the community’s safety.
Background:
In Silverman v. United States the Supreme Court held that that the Fourth Amendment does not protect conversations, therefore wiretapping does not constitute a search and seizure. The case was reversed in Katz v. United States, when Justice Harlan proposed a two pronged test of whether public actions should be considered private and therefore protected. 1) Has the person exhibited an expectation of privacy? and 2) is the expectation of privacy one that society is prepared to recognize as 'reasonable.'
In more recent decisions, the Supreme Court has found that society is not prepared to extend privacy rights to bank customers regarding their bank statements and that society was not prepared to recognize a privacy right-to grow a backyard crop of marijuana.

Writing from the leader’s perspective means you will approach Dunn’s vision through the people centric viewpoint of the leader. You are focused on how the two businesses will meet the vision through the decision making flow and grouping of people within the organizations. How do you best use the people to meet your vision? Even though it is tempting to write in the first person, a plan is written in the third person in which a story will unfold. Dunn is essentially telling a story of how he is going to purchase the Deli and bring George and the business in as part of the Dunn Ski Emporium. Dunn will need to figure out how he is going to combine these two businesses and use his leadership skills to do so. Remember, you are writing from the leader’s perspective and are not solving problems but literally creating and developing an environment in which problems will be resolved by those who make the business run.
Dunn plans on designing an organizational structure that fulfills his vision, one that he believes George has for The Deli, and one that will fulfill its mission. The organization must be open to change and possess a culture that empowers its employees to follow the vision created. Like all good social architects, the building must start with a design that suites the purpose of the business and seeks to make it the best building for the job. The entire paper is the plan. Students are expected to be creative but realistic in developing pieces of the plan. For example, feel free to assign names and roles to the people in the business. In being creative students may not change the facts in the plan. Dunn will provide the plan to George Atkins once Dunn sits down with him to begin negotiations, so the plan must be polished. This was a middle-class family that got caught up in the immediate gratification of crime and cash.
One event led to another. Once the parents changed their lifestyle and range of morals, the children began to consider it the normal way of life. In their teens, the children decided to help their family and entered the life of crime they had become accustomed to.
Officer Matt Johnson met this multiethnic family, known for its criminal activities. He worked undercover for two years to build a relationship with the family. He learned that Rob, the father, began selling drugs because he had lost his job and was the sole wage earner for the family. Once Rob realized how lucrative this line of work was, he included his wife, Mary, in the crime business. They are in "tight" with the community and organized crime, and Mary solicits clients on the Internet for drug distribution.
Rob and Mary have two children, Lucy (aged fifteen) and Junior (aged seventeen), who were slowly incorporated as drug runners for the family. Officer Johnson continued to stay close to the family, and through his interactions with the children and Mary, learned why the family dynamics changed from a stable loving environment to a family full of negative behavior and criminal activity.

The stress of the "job" begins to affect the marital relationship between Rob and Mary as they try to make a living through criminal activities. Rob becomes volatile and begins to abuse Mary and Lucy. Junior watches the domestic violence and sees this as a means of gaining power over the opposite gender so that they do as told. He admires the control his father has over the family and the business.
