An estimated three million Americans live with HCV. When undiagnosed and
untreated, the disease can become a chronic infection that damages the liver beyond
repair.
Preventing the transmission of the hepatitis C virus begins with screenings to identify
infected individuals and to avoid unknowingly passing the infection to another person.
If infected, individuals can take precautions such as not sharing personal items and
avoiding high risk sexual activity.
Because the number-one cause of HCV transmission is injection drug use, avoiding
injection drug use or using sterile needles is essential. In addition, people who
perform tattooing and piercings must always use sterile needles.
