Two Step Flow Theory

Introduction to Theory:
The purpose of the study was to focus on presidential
election campaigns and people's decision-making process
for election campaigns. All three researchers actually
wanted to find out whether mass media messages
directly influence people's voting decisions. Surprisingly,
they found that media messages (such as radio and
newspapers) had a much smaller impact on voting
behavior than informal face-to-face communication.
Based on this research data, the two-step flow
communication theory of mass communication was
developed by Katz and Paul Lazarsfeld in his 1944.
https://www.communicationtheory.org/two-step-flow-
theory-2/
• DEFENITION:
The two-step media flow theory is a theory that suggests that
the influence of mass media on the public is not linear but is a
two-step communication process, Information from the media
reaches first and foremost "opinion leaders", people who are
active media users and who collect, interpret and disseminate
the meaning of the information. communication messages to less
active media to consumers
https://www.britannica.com/topic/two-step-flow-model-of-
communication
Opinion Leaders:
 An opinion leader is a leader of a particular group who
provides details and information to the less active people
in the group. In the office, the managing director is the
opinion leader, and in public, the political leader is the
opinion leader. They interpret information for their own
group. But one thing is clear: He is. An opinion leader is
only the leader of his or her own group, not of everyone.
Note: Opinion leaders have full voice only within
structured social groups and not over isolated individuals
within the group.
The two-step flow theory can be adapted to different cultures
and societies by taking into account the cultural and social
context of the communication. One adaptation is to identify
opinion leaders who are relevant and credible in the specific
cultural context. For example, in collectivist cultures, opinion
leaders may be family members or community leaders, while in
individualistic cultures, opinion leaders may be celebrities or
experts in a particular field
https://fourweekmba.com/two-step-flow-theory
How can the two-step flow theory be
adapted to different cultures and
societies?
. Another adaptation is to use different
communication channels that are more appropriate
for the cultural context:
For example, in some cultures, face-to-face
communication may be more effective than digital
communication. Moreover, the two-step flow theory has
been adapted to the digital age by taking into account
the impact of social media on communication
https://fourweekmba.com/two-step-flow-theory/
. Social media has changed the way information
flows and how opinion leaders are identified and
targeted. Therefore, it is important to adapt the two-
step flow theory to include social media platforms
and influencers. In summary, the two-step flow theory
can be adapted to different cultures and societies by
identifying relevant opinion leaders and using
appropriate communication channels. It can also be
adapted to the digital age by taking into account the
impact of social media on communication.
The key concepts of two-step flow theory are:
Opinion Leaders:
These are people who are active users of media and
who collect, interpret and disseminate the meaning of
media messages to less active media consumers .
They are influential figures and have better access to
information than the general public
https://sites.psu.edu/tizio/two-step-flow-theory/
https://www.britannica.com/topic/two-step-flow-model-of-
communication
Interpersonal Communication: Theory that explains
that people's responses to media messages are
mediated by interpersonal communication with
members of their social environment
What are some examples of successful strategic
communications that have used the two-step flow
theory?
 The two-step flow theory has been used successfully in
various strategic communication campaigns. Here are
some examples:
 1. Political campaigns: The two-step flow theory has
been used in political campaigns to identify and target
opinion leaders who can influence the opinions of voters
 https://www.slideshare.net/FakihaNaseer/two-step-flow-of-
communication-theorypdf
. Health campaigns: The two-step flow theory has been
used in health campaigns to identify and target opinion
leaders who can influence the health behaviors of their
peers
https://fourweekmba.com/two-step-flow-theory/
“In the heart of Gaza, among challenges and conflict,
journalists stand out as heroes, fearlessly navigating complex
situations to produce stories worth hearing ,who go to the front
lines armed with pens and cameras rather than weapons. They
risk their lives to shine a light on untold stories and capture the
essence of the resilience and strength that characterizes Gaza
.In the midst of troubles, journalists become voices for the
voiceless, documenting people's struggles, victories, and
everyday lives. Their commitment to truth and transparency
makes them a light of hope and a voice for the voiceless. We
ensure that we continue to inform the world about the realities
faced by communities. We acknowledge the heroism of these
journalists, but we also acknowledge their invaluable
contribution for keeping the flame of consciousness alive in the
darkest of times. Their stories resonate across borders, uniting
humanity through shared experiences and sparking a global call
for justice and understanding. ”
Challenges of two step flow
theory:
Two-Step Flow Theory also poses some challenges for
strategic communicators, as it is not always easy to
identify and reach out to opinion leaders and their
followers on a scale of influence. We present Opinion
leaders vary depending on the situation, topic, and
communication medium. They may also have different
motivations, intentions, and biases, which can affect how
they interpret and deliver your message. Moreover, their
followers do not necessarily blindly follow their opinions,
but may also search for other sources of information,
compare different points of view, and independently form
their own opinions.
Applications in Public Relations:
The two-step flow theory of communication is
important in public relations because it affects large
audiences. When the media and her PR professionals
disseminate information with the hope of crafting a
specific message to audiences and opinion leaders who
will identify with that information, the impact of that
message also changes. This theory changes the way PR
professionals interact with their audiences in several
ways. First, the message must attract and support
influencers in a specific target group. PR professionals
should not miss this important step on the way to their
goals.
https://www.slideshare.net/FakihaNaseer/two-step-flow-of-
communication-theorypdf
Why is two-way communication
important?
●Increasing productivity: Introducing two-way
communication increases productivity in the
workplace by providing an effective way to
communicate between departments, managers, and
colleagues. Two-way communication allows
professionals to communicate through different
channels by asking questions, informing others, and
providing feedback. This also allows managers to
train and coach employees using the company's best
practices and business processes to improve
production rates and quality.
●Improve job satisfaction: Effective two-way communication
helps professionals increase job satisfaction. They can do this by
letting others know about their opinions, interests, and concerns.
Through effective feedback from managers, employees can
improve their work habits and processes to achieve better work
performance and increase satisfaction at work.
●Build collaboration: Two-way communication allows team
members to talk to each other. This allows employees to
collaborate on different projects to better understand and
improve business processes. Employees can share ideas and
feedback through effective two-way communication.
Collaboration helps colleagues become more creative by sharing
each other's thoughts and ideas.
https://www.slideshare.net/FakihaNaseer/two-step-flow-of-
communication-theorypdf
Criticisms:
Criticsm of Two-Step Flow According to many scientists:
opinion leaders are described as unnecessarily strong colors.
Mass communication media have huge influence and quality
to influence people. It goes directly to the public, and people
are not dependent on others for information and ideas. In
1971, Westley spoke about the direct influence of mass
media, citing various studies. He said almost all major news is
conveyed directly between the people without the need for
further involvement between the mass media and the people.
In conclusion, the two-step flow theory of
communication explains how mass media influences
the decisions of opinion leaders, how messages
influence audiences, and why certain campaigns
change audience awareness. It expands our
understanding of what it means to be successful.
Audiences and opinion leaders are two of the most
important parts of public relations, and two-stage
flow theory influences them in ways that cannot be
ignored.
