Coal and petroleum are fossil fuels that currently meet most of the world's energy needs for basic necessities and manufacturing goods. However, coal reserves are predicted to last only 200 years while petroleum reserves will be exhausted in around 40 years if usage is not reduced, as these non-renewable resources are finite and being depleted.
