2. Harper Lee’s Career Lee was an independent worker and she was usually studying. She didn’t have much of a social life growing up but she had a friend named Truman Capote. She went to an all-girl college after high school. She was a standout student because all she did was work and study. She was a member of the literary honor club and the glee club. She later transferred to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She joined a sorority to meet friends but she didn’t fit in with the rest of them.She was the editor of the school newspaper in college.
3. Career Continued…… After college she went to New york to follow her dreams of being a great writer. In New York she had to work for the British Overseas Air Corp. She struggled for several years. While she was in New York she met an old friend, Truman Capote. She also met Michael Martin Brown. The Browns gave Harper Lee a big Christmas present- they would support her writing full time. They also helped her get an agent, Maurice Crain. Crain helped Lee get her only book published, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. That book was made into a movie and it was nominated for eight academy awards. It won one and it was for Best Actor by Atticus Finch.
