To create a feel of authenticity, scour flea markets and bargain finds
in Dapitan Street, Quezon City, or the Bangkal area in Makati City.

ROSSY YABUT SHARES HER INSIGHTS ON HOW YOU
CAN DECORATE YOUR OWN PLACE
When designing your own space, the most important
thing you have to do is make sure that it reflects your
personality, IDr. Rossy Ann Yabut Rojales, owner of
Heima and Heim Interior says. Her store is approaching
its sixth anniversary, and what has once started as an
experimental outlet of knickknacks and furniture is now
a go-to place of interior decorators for that fun vibe.
When asked how first-time home dwellers must choose
their furniture, she says: “Essentially, it really depends
on your lifestyle. You may be the type who likes staying
in the bed, or the dining, or the living area—you have to
take note of that. That’s important because that will be
where you will spend most of your time.”
For smaller spaces, she says it is necessary that you
learn to prioritize on your items. “You don’t want to
live in a place that’s really cluttered, so you have to
buy what can only be accommodated into the small
space. You have to make your own sacrifices.” You must
also be able to allot some time to organize your items
meticulously and not just make them all fit.
Whether you have a big or small space, investing in
good furniture is also a must, she says. “You have to
think which of the items you really need and really use.”
Thinking about the future, your possible movements,
must also be considered in choosing your furniture.
“Eventually when you move into a different location,
you can still bring those along with you,” she adds,
saying your investment pieces have to flexible in a
sense that they can look good and be functional even
after a few years.

this project, but she also thinks that you can do
it on your own if you do proper research. There

1 If you want to play it safe, stick with this combo: one
monochromatic hue and one print. For example, your living
room wall can be painted a muted color (such as ivory or a quiet
shade of green), and you can pepper the area with colorful quilts
and an upholstered couch with a bright, bold color, such as red.
2 If you’re really set on mixing and matching prints and
patterns, prevent your space from being an eyesore by
mixing one bold print with one discreet print. For example:
You might want stripes in your bathroom tiles, and you can
do bold strokes of that, but the rest of your bathroom fixtures
should feature a more subdued pattern, such as tiny floral
prints. Note also that you should limit the number of colors if

one style; people tend to have a design preference that is
a confluence of elements: bohemian with a dash of classic,
