What are three (3) facts you learned about the brain that you
didn't know before?
While in this PSY101 course, there are some facts about brain I
have learned that I did not know before. The first fact is on the
weight of the brain where I have learned that brain weighs
roughly 3 lbs. (1.4 kilograms) and that it makes up about 2% of
human body weight. For instance, if a person weights 50
kilograms; 2% of the overall weight comes from the brain mass
something that proves how weighty brain is. The second fact is
that I learned is that the brain has over 86 billion nerves cells
also known as neurons that make up the gray matter. The third
fact I learned is that contrary to what many people believe that
the brain can multitask, the brain does not have ability to focus
on two different things at the same time. It switches from one
thing to the other a situation that creates reasons for error and
delays.
Why do you personally think that learning more about the brain
is helpful in studying psychology?
Studying more about the brain is critical in studying psychology
because the brain controls the nervous system which determines
behavior. It is what one thinks, interprets, and reacts that is
applied in psychology. This is everything done is psychology
surrounds the brain as the command center of the body.
If you could choose any nervous system disorder to study,
which disorder would you choose, and why? Look up three (3)
facts about your chosen disorder to share with your classmates.
9. I would choose to study and understand migraine because it is
one of the most common neurological disorders affecting at
least one in five women. The understanding would hence have a
higher impact on the society since many people suffer from it.
Three facts about migraines are that; migraines are highly
preventable and secondly stress is the main trigger of migraine
with over 70% ability to cause the disorder. According to Al-
Karagholi, et al., (2021) many people suffering from a migraine
first goes through an aura (seeing dark, light or zigzag spots, or
losing vision in the center or sides or feeling like pins are being
stuck into your arms, legs or sides).

When it comes to human development, both nature and nurture
have the strongest impact. Though nature has a higher effect
than nurture, it is evident that the two determines the quality of
behavior and overall personality the child is likely to develop.
According to Fulker & Eysenck, 2019) nature is comprised of
the genes and all hereditary factors that make up the unique
physical appearance, physiology and personality. On the other
hand, nurture is comprised of the environmental factors that
have a direct impact on a person’s growth for instance culture,
social relationships, childhood experience, the quality of
environment that one lives in, and family among many others.
Starting with nature, when a child is conceived, he/she has
genes obtained from the parents and this means that
automatically the child acquires some traits of the mother and
that of the father. It is for this reason that in the case the child
is not exposed to outside world after birth or even fails to know
his/her parents, the child would automatically have some
similarities with biological parents for instance in physical
look, way of thinking, way of handling and reacting to issues,
and other unique things the child may inherit from parents
though genes. However, despite nature being natural, there is
also the environment in which the child grows in. it is in this
environment that the child gets exposed to a lot of other factors
with potential of affecting personality.
For instance, a child’s parents might be humble, peaceful and of
good values but the child is brought up in a family where
violence is the order to the day. The environment in this case
11. being nurture gets to expose the child whose brain is in early
stages of development to violent as being way of solving issues.
Such exposure tends to have a permanent impact on the child as
the child is likely to learn and make use of that behavior in the
future. This is to mean that as conditional learning teaches,
what the child learns tends to reflect in overall behavior.
