Over the past few decades, basketball coaches and
players have developed a variety of strategies that
result in different tempos of play. However, every
modern basketball strategy is dictated by the 24-
second shot clock, a rule that forces the offensive
team to attempt a shot within 24 seconds of gaining
possession.
3. If the ball does not at least contact the rim by
the time to shot clock ends, the offensive team
is charged with a 24-second shot clock
violation and loses the ball.
A 1950 game between the Fort Wayne Pistons
and the Minneapolis Lakers is often cited as an
impetus for the rule. The Pistons won by a score
of 19 to 18, with the teams recording a
combined eight baskets. Prior to the shot clock,
such a contest encouraged both teams to
gain a small lead and maintain possession for
as long as possible.
