Recommendation
Partnering with the ever–growing sustainable seafood movement within the food service industry is the most
viable option for Planet Shrimp. The restaurant industry incorporates a variety of educational platforms,
including trade shows, food festivals, restaurant trade publications, food sections in newspapers and chef blogs,
TV shows and cookbooks. This strategy is the most experiential of the three alternatives, which ensures that the
everyday consumer will have a higher chance of recall. It is durable in the sense that long–term growth can be
sustained through an expanding network of stakeholders in the restaurant industry, from organizations such as
Slow Food to well–known chefs.
Moreover, this strategy also has the largest

Narrative About Fishing
It was around 7 o'clock on a cool August night. Our family was getting ready to eat our dinner consisting of
freshly caught blue crab, croaker, red snapper, and shrimp. We bought the shrimp from a small mom and pop
bait shop on the main road of the island. In our small beach bungalow, the shrimp and crab boil smelled like
heaven with a little bit of sea salt. We all sat on the back porch with the sea to our left and our obnoxious water
balloon throwing neighbors to our right. The smell of our luxurious dinner grew greater when my "nonnie"
walked out with a tray. On the tray sat a mountain of food. It caught everyone's attention, and we all ran to it
attracted like flies on dung. To start off, I indulged on the largest blue crab on the tray. ... Show more content on

I got the head and he got the body. I put the head on my hook so that the tentacles would move when they hit
the water. Not two seconds after my bait hit the water I had a fish on. It ate the squid faster than you could say
onomatopoeia. This time, I was ready. I jerked once again. I made sure to lodge the hook in its mouth and it
took off. The fish was peeling 60 lbs test off my rod like dental floss. Instead of running up the pier this time it
ran under the pier. Just as quick as it was on, it was off, and with a snap that sounded like the breaking of a
toothpick my line broke. Again started thinking what more could I have

Brine Shrimp Eggs Research Paper
Results
Samples of Artemia eggs were exposed during three days to four different salinities: 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5 %.
After gathering all the results, one may observe the level of salinity that contributed to the larger hatching
success of Artemia. The sample exposed to a salinity of 0.5% exhibited the greatest hatching whereas the
sample exposed to the solution with no salt, or 0% salinity, did not show any hatching nor partial hatching
(Table 1). The sample exposed to a 1.5% salinity presented some free–swimming individuals and partial hatch
eggs, but they were less than the ones exposed to 0.5% (Table 1). The sample containing 1% salinity was lost
during the experiment and we were not able to record the data (Table 1).By looking at the recorded data of the
overall class (Table 2), one may still perceive that the most effective solution for hatching was 0.5%

It was predicted that Artemia populations would not survive in waters containing high percentages of salinities
since t would cause the cell to shrivel and probably die due to dehydration. For this reason, it was hypothesized
that the eggs in the solution with the highest salt concentration would not be able to hatch. During the
experiment, the data for the 1% salinity was lost when the petri dish with the solution and the specimen
accidentally dropped. However, our hypothesis was not supported by the recorded data. The results show a
major amount of hatched eggs at 0.5% salinity, while the 1.5% salinity presented a lower amount of hatching.
However, hatching was not present in the solution with 0% salinity. Therefore, I reject my

Characteristics Of The Mantis Shrimp
The Mantis Shrimps are marine crustaceans of the Stomatopoda. The specific species I choose to focus on is
Lysiosquillina maculate, or Zebra Mantis Shrimp. The Zebra Mantis Shrimp is the largest Mantis Shrimp in the
world, growing up to a length of 40cm. Most members of the Stomatopod order share mostly similar
characteristics, so some of what I will write about is not specific to just Lysiosquillina maculate, but most of the
members of the order.Anatomy and PhysiologyThere are over 450 different species of Mantis Shrimp.
Although the Zebra Mantis Shrimp is the largest of all Mantis Shrimp species, the average length for Mantis
Shrimps is around 10cm. Mantis Shrimps have a bony, thick shell that covers the back part of its head and the
first for segments of its chest area, or thorax. The Zebra Mantis Shrimp possess sets of appendages that stem
from its chest, called thoracic appendages. These appendages have evolved to be extremely powerful in close
quarters combat. Mantis Shrimps are normally divided into two subcategories based on their hunting strategy.
The first category is called the "Spearers", and the second is known as the "Smashers". The "Spearers" are
armed with sharp appendages that are topped with barbed tips. The smashers possess both a well–developed
club, and a less developed spear. The spear possess by the smashers is still sharp, and has some uses, however
their main hunting tool is their club–like appendage. The club is used to smash their prey, and break

An Essay On Killer Shrimp
Killer Shrimp also called The mantis shrimp, or stomatopod, is a type of marine crustacean of the order
Stomatopoda. Most species can grow to around 10 centimetres (3.9 in) in length, though a few species reach up
to 38 cm (15 in).The largest ever caught has a length of 46 cm (18 in) in the Indian River near Fort Pierce,
Florida of USA. The carapace of mantis shrimp covers only the rear part of the head and the first four segments
of the thorax. There are more than 450 species of mantis shrimp. Varieties range from shades of brown to vivid
colours, and are among the most important predators in many shallow, tropical and sub–tropical marine
habitats. Despite being common, they are poorly understood as many species spend most of their life tucked

Peacock Mantis Shrimp Research Paper
Most people know that shrimp are a popular food, but they are so much more than that (Gazzalo S–Sn, 439).
Shrimp have a unique diversity and anatomy that is not often appreciated. Shrimp are found in most places
where there is water. They are able to live in both fresh and salt water (Gazzalo S–Sn, 439). Even though
shrimp can survive in both types of water, when most people hear 'shrimp' they think 'ocean'. Shrimp are
capable of many different behaviors as well.
For instance, some shrimp are cannibalistic (National Geographic). Some shrimp hunt and kill other shrimp,
even members of their own species. Shrimp are also capable of symbiotic relationships (Omar Badr Films).
One such relationship is the goby fish and the pistol shrimp (Omar Badr ... Show more content on

What most people do not know is that the peacock mantis shrimp is not a shrimp at all, despite it being in the
name. The peacock mantis shrimp is roughly two to seven inches long, territorial, and brightly colored (Mantis
Shrimp). Its popularity could also be attributed to its colorful appearance. It is colored in mostly blue and green
with red and orange accents (Mantis Shrimp). This "shrimp" also has some deadly weapons, much like the
pistol shrimp.
The peacock mantis shrimp has two club–like claws that fold under its body much like a praying mantis, hence
the name (Mantis Shrimp). The two clubs are spring loaded and when it decides to use them they shoot forward
at the speed of a twenty–two caliber bullet (Mantis Shrimp). They have been known to break through aquarium
glass (Mantis Shrimp). The peacock mantis shrimp also boasts some amazing eyes.
The peacock mantis shrimp can see a lot of color. It has sixteen color cones in each eye, while humans have
three (Mantis Shrimp). The peacock mantis shrimp can see ten times more color than humans can (Mantis
Shrimp). It can also see ultraviolet light (Mantis Shrimp). Its eyes also move independently from each other for
maximum field of vision (Mantis Shrimp). Even though the peacock mantis shrimp is not a shrimp it is still

Shrimp and Grits Growing up in Southern region of the United States seafood is a staple ingredient in most
dishes especially in Louisiana. Seafood like shrimp can be prepared many different ways. Shrimp can be boiled,
fried, or even sautéed. No matter how shrimp is prepared they are delicious. Grits are also commonly eaten in
the Southern region of the United States. Grits are eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The toppings they are
served with are endless. Some people even add sugar to grit they are very versatile which makes them great for
cooking. Today I will be sharing with you the process of making shrimp and cheese grits.
For my shrimp and cheese grits recipe you will need the following for the shrimp: 1 ¼ pounds of raw shrimp,
peeled and deveined, 1 cup of yellow onion, chopped, 2 tablespoon of minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of ... Show

North Carolina Fishing
In 2015, commercial fisheries harvested in North Carolina caught more than four times the recreational coastal
fish harvest, yet commercial fishermen ask for less stringency on commercial fishing ("Portal"). Within North
Carolina waters the most effective way of catching fish can be noticed without looking very far. Over the past
few decades, many more commercial fishermen have been popping up creating a lack of abundance in some
channels and creeks that once were pristine. The methods used by many commercial fishermen can harm them
by catch and nontarget species of the estuaries and nurseries. With the harming of these species we also begin
to harm the keystone species of most coastal regions. There may have been an abundance of fish at one ... Show

When gill nets are used there is no escape for manatees or sea turtles until someone comes to cut them out of
the floating walls of the mesh entrap them until they are taken by death or released. But when North

are aquatic mammals kind of like whales they are the gentle giants of the Intracoastal waterway. Manatees are
like the whales of inshore but unlike whales manatees are more inept to being harmed by humans and the

Planet Shrimp Analysis
Education
Overview
Planet Shrimp wants to use 'clean' shrimp as their main point of differentiation, highlighting their closed–loop
aquaculture process that does not involve toxins and ensures environmental sustainability throughout. As
consumers are continually concerned about knowing where their food comes from, the safety of their food and
price point, Planet Shrimp should understand how to educate the public about the 'clean' shrimp movement
(The Canadian Press, 2014a). To achieve this, Planet Shrimp must answer the question:
How should Planet Shrimp educate consumers about the benefits of clean shrimp without shortcomings of
current products being associated with their brand?

Research Paper On Shrimp's Exoskeleton
Shrimp's exoskeleton Inspires new armor design
Our underwater friend, a model.
When you think of fierce underwater creatures, the tiny shrimp may not come to mind among the water giants
such as killer whales, the great white shark, manta rays, and others. But yet, when you are eating that
scrumptious thing, don't you find that shell a bit troublesome?
Well, whereas you may find that part annoying and just a hassle to deal with when cooking, other people, such
as researchers may have taken a shine to it. It was nearly a month ago that news barely broached out from

Brine Shrimp Essay
The purpose or the significance of the experiment was to see if brine shrimp can survive in different salinities
of saltwater. The experimental (alternative) hypothesis was supported, because in figure 1 it showed that there
was an increase of the average (mean) of survival rate of the brine shrimp when the salinity level (in grams)
increased. It was in Figure 1 and it shown that the rates had higher numbers (increased survival rates) and the
lower salinities had lower survival rates. The raw data also had shown that higher numbers were in the higher
salinities rather than in the lower salinities. The salt had an effect on the Brine Shrimp, is because the more the
more salt they had (being a saltwater species) would lead to more surviving unlike a lower salinity which did
not have enough salt to support the DV (the Brine Shrimp). In the literature review, we stated that others have
also shown that the higher the salinity, the higher chances of the brine shrimp surviving in the saltwater. We
were uncertain about the brine shrimp of not having high survival rates in lower salinities, due to the brine
shrimp species mainly don't live in high salinity areas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also another error could have been the temperature of the water, the water temperature was all the same for
each different brine shrimp, but it could have had a better chance of living in a higher or lower water
temperature. There weren't many methods to see how many brine shrimp were alive, due to they were very
small. So then, the only efficient way was to use an eye dropper and count how many from each eye drop. Also,
the scales that were used, were able to come close (rounded number) to the exact number of salt. The results
can be generalized to all salinities shrimp live

Researchers at the University of Queensland say that shrimp may be the key to advancing cancer detection
systems. When it comes to people, we all possess three color receptors within our eyes, allowing us to see
visual light as we know it. However, there are many animals who have even more. The more receptors that an
animal has, the more they can see. Topping the charts is the Mantis Shrimp, who have upwards of twenty color
receptors, allowing them to see not only the visual light that humans see, but also into the invisible spectrums
of ultraviolet and polarized light. Using polarized light, things that have once gone unseen by the human eye
can be brought to light, including cancerous tissues, which reflect this special form of light differently

The Global Catch Of Shrimp Species
1. Introduction
Penaeid shrimps (Family Penaeidae: Rafinesque, 1815) are the most economically important crustaceans in the
world as a primitive group of decapod (Abele, 1991; Chan, 1998; Dall et al., 1990). The family has a world–
wide distribution in shallow, inshore tropical and subtropical waters. The highest diversity of the family
members occurs in the Indo–West Pacific region with about 205 species grouped into 26 genera (Farfante and
Kensley, 1997; Martin and Davis, 2001; McLaughlin et al., 2005; Nizinski, 2003). The global catch of shrimp
species is about 3.4 million tons/year. More than half of which are caught from the Western and Northwest
Central Pacific fisheries, besides the contribution of other essential fisheries in the Indian and in the Western
Atlantic Oceans (FAO, 2014).
Shrimps remain to be the largest single product in value terms accounting about 15 % of the internationally
traded fisheries products in 2012. Moreover, shrimps are primarily produced in developing countries, and much
of this production progressively expands in the international trade. As the economic conditions develop in these
countries, growing demand leads to high domestic consumption leading to fewer exports. Such high demand
and the subsequent overexploitation are negatively impacting the standing stocks of shrimp which fall below
the healthy standard levels. This requires regular monitoring, assessment and management of each species to
keep tracking of the effects of such

The Growth Of Marine Diatom
Abstract
The growth of marine diatom, Chaetoceros muelleri, used as live feed in aquaculture, was optimized using
response surface methodology (RSM). The variables initially screened for biomass production using Plackett–
Burman experimental design were nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature, pH, salinity and agitation speed.
The screening revealed that nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature and pH significantly influenced the
biomass production of C. muelleri. These five variables were further optimized by central composite design
(CCD) of RSM for biomass production and the medium was constituted accordingly to have nitrate 180 mg l–1,
phosphate 7.5 mg l–1, silicate 30 mg l–1, and temperature of incubation 31oC and pH 6.46. At the end of 10
day culture period under the above conditions biomass, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were found significantly
increased from 360 ±0.01 mg l–1, 9.41±0.02%,18.11±0.01%, 0.6±0.02% to 1.16±0.01g l–1 ,

Planet Shrimp Company
Overview
Planet Shrimp is an indoor shrimp farm located in Aylmer, Ontario. Built in the former Imperial Tobacco
building, they farm and harvest Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei)(Nutall–Smith, 2015). President
Marvyn Budd expresses that Planet Shrimp is built on the premise of 'clean shrimp'; in other words, naturally
raised shrimp that is farmed without the use of antibiotics, pesticides, and hormones (Van Brenk, 2015). Planet
Shrimp is currently capable of producing 400,000 pounds of shrimp annually, but they are aiming to produce up
to 3–5 million pounds of shrimp annually ("Ontario Shrimp Farm", 2015). Although their shrimp are not
currently on the market yet, they plan to expand their facility from 65,000 square ... Show more content on

Since Planet Shrimp is particularly passionate about its vision, alignment with strategic vision is the rated the
highest out of all the decision–making criteria. It is the most feasible option because it requires working with
only a select number of locations, which is most cost–effective. Moreover, Planet Shrimp will be able to sustain
demand; since they are only producing a limited amount of shrimp right now, they should focus on ensuring
that they can maintain a steady supply to build a strong foundation on which to further expand their network.
Working with stores who are already known for their sustainable values ensures that the Planet Shrimp brand
reputation is maintained. Those who understand the importance of Planet Shrimp's values will likely be the
"early adopters" and champions of their product, marketing their shrimp through word–of–mouth and organic
marketing. Although there is a market within large chain grocery stores for sustainably sourced seafood (such
as Loblaws), these grocery stores do not have as much of a focused message of sustainability as smaller,
independent stores. Thus, Planet Shrimp's brand identity has the potential to be diluted amongst the greater
offerings of large chain stores.

"What?? This has raw fish in it?!?" What you just read is a classic quote by none other than Grace Trembath,

Research Paper On Freshwater Invertebrates
While most people thinking of invertebrates for the aquarium are thinking of marine invertebrates, there are a
surprising number of freshwater invertebrates that make excellent tank inhabitants. Many freshwater
invertebrates do not require large amounts of space, making them ideal for Nano tanks or even goldfish bowls.
Some eat algae or uneaten fish food, while others are stunningly beautiful. Sometimes such useful attributes
even belong to the same creature. However, freshwater invertebrates don't always have the same requirements
as fish and the requirements differ considerably between different species.
Freshwater Shrimp
Freshwater shrimp are probably the most decorative freshwater invertebrates. There are many species, each
with its own color pattern and mode of life. As most species are small, they do not require much space.
Freshwater shrimp are harassed or eaten by many fish species so tank mates must be considered carefully. I
tried keeping Cherry Shrimp with a Pygmy Gourami and regretted the decision. The Gourami harassed my
shrimp and probably caused the death of two of the five. Endler's Livebearers, however, coexisted peacefully
with the shrimp.

Disadvantages Of Mantis Shrimp
To many owner having saltwater aquarium, live rock is one of the essential things which set the natural tone for
the whole tank besides fish and turtles. Not only does the collection of the colorful live rocks beautifies one's
tank but also provides shelters for the fish and filters the whole tank. However, everything has a good side and
the bad one. The addition of live rocks to the tank may have some potential drawbacks, for not every organism
living on those marine rocks is important, and even some of them are disadvantageous to the tank itself. One
exemplary "unwanted organism" which lives on live rocks is the Mantis Shrimp, which maybe accidentally
introduced to the tank through the addition of live rocks. Mantis shrimp, which is a varicolored creature living
in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is an extraordinary pet, for not only does it colorful body impresses the people
but also its powerful appendages, which are a nightmare to crabs, gastropods, and almost all other animals in
the sea. Due to its interesting feature, many people at the present favor this species. In addition, some people
even want to adopt the mantis shrimps as their pets; nevertheless, there are many hardships coming along with
this desire. As a growing infant who can mess up with everything within his or her reach, the mantis shrimp can
eat up its neighboring organisms and some marine plants in the tank. The mantis shrimp is well–known by
many scientists for its powerful weapon–the raptorial appendages which is equipped for the sake of its survival.
It is this feature of the shrimp that makes it a strong hunter in the nature. Due to this feature, especially the one
owned by the Smasher species of the Mantis Shrimp, the shrimp has no trouble breaking preys with tough
shells such as crabs and snails. In addition to the raptorial appendages, the mantis shrimp can swim insanely
fast, thereby boiling water around it. While one may be surprised by these qualities, other organisms living
around it. Because of its powerful weapon, hunting nature, and the ability to boil through the act of swimming,
the mantis shrimp may be capable of eating every fish in the tank and killing them by increasing the
temperature of water. In order

Our end results only supported to some extent our hypothesis that increasing numbers of brine shrimp would
directly cause decreases in algae concentration. Our hypothesis, if applied to only the jars of 3 and 6 brine

more shrimp that were present in the ecosystem, the less algae that were available at the end. In an ecosystem

specifically, the producers. And as the consumers develop and grow, those demands also grow. And thus, when
we increased the amount of brine shrimp, more algae were consumed per unit time. Though the rate of
consumption from the brine shrimp did not exceed the rate of growth of the algae in any jar, the ... Show more

Intraspecific competition played a significant role in this experiment. In such a confined space, the brine shrimp
had to compete for space in addition to food. A few brine shrimp turned out to be smaller than the others, but
this most likely could have been caused by their varying sizes from the start. Other brine shrimp that could not
effectively compete with the others died and left behind their exoskeletons.
When we factored in the control jars, we revealed inconsistencies in the data, which led us to believe that there
were unacknowledged errors in our experiment. Had the experiment proceeded as planned, our control jars
would have contained the highest concentration of algae due to the absence of any consumers. Without any
consumers, the algae grew without any limiting factors. Since those jars were the controls, it suggested that the
errors occurred in our experimental jars. The algae concentration in the jars of 3 brine shrimp

Question Number One (1) Value the processing plant proposal. Ignore the Industrial Revenue Bond financing.
Assume: Market Risk Premium 8.8%, Riskless Rate 11.41%, and Harris Long Term Debt Rate 13.5%.
Our approach to valuing the processing plant can easily be decomposed into three distinct steps first, find the
value of the foreseeable free cash flows. Next, calculate the terminal value of the project. Finally, take the
present value of those flows. The next few paragraphs walk through each of these steps in order of progression.
In the first step we analyze the data and calculate the free cash flow from the inception of the project to the
foreseeable future.
We opted to use Exhibit 7, which incorporates an 11% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since this project is a going concern, the levered terminal and present values are calculated using the weight

Question Number Two (2) Is the pro–forma statement in Exhibit 7 credible? Why or why not?
We do not think the pro–forma statement in Exhibit 7 is credible.
1. The case explicitly discusses the volatility inherent in consumers' demand for shrimp, pointing out that
consumers are likely to forego shrimp entirely or substitute it with a less expensive product. In spite of this
economic sensitivity, Exhibit 7 and Exhibit 6 (the 0% inflation scenario) show the exact same consumption of
shrimp each year. 2. Management has no experience in this industry. Shifting the organization away from
shrimping and into a processing plant will require a highly skilled management team and the Exhibit does not
indicate that any new senior hires will be brought on board to help manage the new plant. This undermines our
ability to rely on the forecast as a whole. 3. Exhibit 7 applied an 11% inflation rate to every single financial line

Mantis Shrimp Research Paper
"They see something, walk up to it, pick it up, and maybe beat the crap out of it," says Justin Marshall,
referring to a commonly unknown creature called the Mantis Shrimp. This species often goes overlooked and
unnoticed by most of the world and not just because it only grows 2–7 inches ("Peacock Mantis Shrimp" 1).
Since it is such an unknown animal, many people do not know what it is or what makes it remarkable. How can
the small mantis shrimp, a crustacean whose appearance is more like that of a clown than a ferocious beast, be
worth noting in the different fields of science? They are more interesting than they seem. Mantis shrimp

muscle system is what allows it to accelerate so fast. As a result of the extraordinary speed the shrimp's
appendages can reach, the energy released into the water causes it to cavitate or vaporize the water when it hits
the prey. Cavitation is a very destructive phenomenon; when the bubbles from cavitation burst, they cause a
small implosion like reaction that produces heat, light, and sound. The cavitation bubbles act like a second
impact to whatever animal the mantis shrimp is targeting. If the first punches fail to immediately kill the prey,
the cavitation bubbles would create the implosion that would finish the job. The same type of cavitation
bubbles that the shrimp can create have been known to badly damage rotating boat propellers (Caldwell

little predators and can quickly annihilate whatever prey it sets its eyes

(Wachirasiri et al., 2016) examined the effects of amino acid type, concentration and pH on yield, texture, and
colour of both cooked and uncooked shrimp after a freeze–thaw cycle and Sensory evaluations of the treated
cooked shrimps. This study reported amino acids were also improved yield of white shrimp (table 2).
Compared to the control, shrimp treated with glycine, arginine, lysine and proline improved product yield.
Treatment with NaCl could improve WHC by thawing yield and cooking yield of the fresh shrimp sample.
Chloride ions were more strongly bound to the protein than the sodium ion, resulting to an increase of net
negative charge of protein. The electrostatic repulsion and increased interfilamental spaces allowed more water
molecules to be penetrated and adsorbed into. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Treating with lysine at 2.0 g/100 ml and arginine at all concentration used exhibited significant improvement of
WHC during freezing, and cooking (p < 0.05). Comparatively high water–holding improvement was observed
for the use of lysine and arginine. Maximum WHC was expressed in shrimp soaked with arginine at 1.0 g/100
ml and its cooking yield (97.59 g/100 g fresh shrimp) was not significantly different (p > 0.5) to shrimp treated
with STPP at 4.0 g/100 ml. Considering from thawing yield and cooking yield, the results indicated the
synergistic effect of lysine/arginine with NaCl to enhance WHC of frozen shrimps. This might be because of
the effects on pH, ionic strength and also specific interactions between amino acid side chain, polar group,
nonpolar group with myofibrillar protein. The presence of NaCl could increase the electrostatic repulsive force

Shrimp Synthesis Essay
The main method in distinguishing between penaeids and carideans actually is by examining their reproductive
methods. Penaeids release their eggs into the salty ocean away from the estuaries at an extremely early and
undeveloped stage in the form of nauplius larvae, which is essentially just a swimming head the majority of the
body still missing. The caridean, on the other hand, carries their eggs in the females' abdomen until they pass
through the non–self–sustainable nauplius phase and can hatch at the more developed larval stage with some
new segments and appendages. Either way, both of the species are barely visible to the eye and do not look
anything like the adult shrimp that they will become. Through this phase in development they live and float
independently in the plankton as they grow, molt, and develop through a long series of larval stages on their
way to adulthood. As one can see, there is nothing simple about shrimp at all. Even an expert in crustaceans at
the University of Washington, Greg Jensen, had this to say when asked to define the word shrimp. "So many
things are called shrimp that it's confusing. Seed shrimp are ostracods; fairy ... Show more content on

Taking a Look at Mantis Shrimp
INTRODUCTION
The mantis shrimp is a stomatopod known for its extraordinary eye sight. It is thought to have one of the most
complex visual systems in the animal kingdom. Their eyes are similar to many insects in that they have
'compound eyes' each eye sits on a stalk and can move independently to the other, The trinocular vision
experienced by the mantis shrimp allows it to see circularly polarized light as well as a host of colours not even
fathomable to humans. Biomimicry is a form of engineering that describes the design of new products based on
things observable in nature; just as the study of a bird may help us design aero planes; the study of the visual
structure of the mantis shrimp has the potential to help advance radio and satellite imagery.
To understand the applications of mantis shrimp vision; we must first understand how the eyes of the mantis
shrimp work. The compound eye of the mantis shrimp is made up of many ommatidia; "an ommatidium is like
a simple but complete photoreceptor organ consisting of optical components and receptor cells" Most research
suggests that the vision experienced by the mantis shrimp is due to three distinct regions in its eye; there is an
upper and lower hemisphere separated by the midband; these regions are made of distinct ommatidia; adapted
and responsible for different functions in the eye of the mantis shrimp. The research I have come across
suggests that the most important region is the modified midband because this is the

How To Start A Fishing Essay
You may have heard how boring fishing can be. Sitting there waiting for a catch that may never happen can be
frustrating. However, for people who have more patience and are still interested in learning to fish you may
want to follow some basic steps. After following these steps, you should be able to have a smooth and relaxed
time fishing. These steps include how to set up your pole, choose your bait and how to cast your line. All you
need is a fishing pole and a pre–supplied tackle box.
When setting up the fishing pole there will be a reel with fishing line wrapped up. Unhook the line from the line
clip, unwind the line and start pulling it through the guides along the pole. Start from the bottom, which will
have the biggest guide and make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A sharp hook swinging at the end of a pole that is usually six feet long or more is not safe when you are around
others. Make sure you have enough room around you and that your pole is not in range of any other person
before you attempt to cast your line. At the bottom of your pole there is a metal curved wire that loosens and
locks the line on the reel. With your right hand hold the line against the pole to secure the weight from pulling
down your line before you're ready. With your left hand you are going to release the line while continuing to
hold the line with your right hand. Bring your pole over your shoulder facing the water and swing it over your
head and release the line when the pole is pointing straight up into the sky. Your line should now be in the water
and you will be waiting to catch a fish. The best way to tell if fish are biting is by pulling the line with your
index finger close to your pole but not completely against it. If the fish are biting and tugging on the line our
finger will feel the pulls. After you feel a tug on the line, jerk the pole quickly toward you and start reeling in
your line. Doing this will increase the chances of you successfully catching a fish.
Fishing can be fun and relaxing if you follow these basic steps in how to set up your pole, know what kind of
bait to use and how to cast your line. Make sure to pack essentials such as water and snacks when going fishing

Found in shallow, tropical waters is a little crustacean known as the "mantis shrimp" even though it is neither
mantis nor shrimp. More specifically known as "stomatopod" (or scientifically as Odontodactylus scyllaru [1]),
this combative sea dweller is well known for its high–velocity punch. Its bullet–fast clubs have been witnessed
to cause water to boil with visible flashes of light and release air bubbles that "[unleash] tremendous amounts
of energy [2]" when collapsed. Even more unbelievable is its legendary feat of breaking aquarium glass
measuring a fourth of an inch thick: an accomplishment achieved in April 1998 [2] by a specimen named
Tyson. However, the mantis shrimp is not just a formidable fighter; it is also able to see like almost ... Show

Although we cannot personally see it, polarized light is everywhere and the ability to capture it could be useful
in numerous ways. The first question is then, how does the mantis shrimp do it? Similar to many other
crustaceans, the mantis shrimp has light receptors in the optical units of their compound eyes that are sensitive
to linearly polarized light. Nevertheless, it is a particular row of 6 units around the middle of their eyes known
as the "midband" that makes them so unique. Inside these 6 rows are 3 different types of "rhabdoms" that attach
to their receptors and occupy 2 rows each. These "rhabdoms" are specifically shaped to convert circularly
polarized light into the much easier to process linear variety [5]. Inspired by this, researchers have made
artificial "waveplates" that are "[comprised of] two layers of tantalum pentoxide nanorods structurally similar
to those in the eye of the mantis shrimp [6]" and can alter polarized light in similar ways. They hope to
someday be able to manipulate the polarization of light without changing the resulting colours and achieve
results in "higher definition and larger storage density for optical media

The complex eyes and polarized vision of the mantis shrimp has influenced a group of researchers to create a
camera than can detect various forms of cancer. Polarized light is a light that radiates in different planes of
direction, similar to looking at a white wall and a black table and can be used to see things the human eye can't,
such as cancer cells. Research conducted shows that its sensor has the ability to detect cancerous legions before
cells can become abundant enough to appear as visible tumors. Associate professor of computer science and
engineering at Washington University, Viktor Gruev, whose lab worked on building the sensor, says that
polarized light makes it easier to see cancer cells because their disorganized and invasive ... Show more content

Due to the advancements in nanotechnology, the tiny CMOS (complimentary metal–oxide–semiconductor)
sensors common in smartphones and the fundamentals of the mantis shrimp's vision allowed the team to make a
simple imaging sensor versus older polarized imaging devices in the past that tend to be large and use multiple
sensors that require optics, engineering and physics experts to operate properly.
The sensor is smaller than a penny and can spot cancer cells much earlier. For example, a doctor would
normally use an endoscope to find cancerous tissue that looks cancerous and then take a biopsy. However,
cancer must be at a certain stage of development before it can be seen by the human eye. A single chip solution
could drastically reduce the need for biopsies, but until the technology is further advanced, the extent of
reduction is unclear. (12) Justin Marshall also brought his expertise to the project and agrees with Gruev that
incorporating traditional color vision into the sensor would be the next challenge. They note that not being able
to see the colors we see would be problem for doctors who may use the sensor, since visual cues are typically
used to guide them through procedures. On the other hand, mantis shrimp gather information in terms of color
and polarization by waving

Descriptive Essay On Fishing
My father and I have be going on an annual fishing trip since I was eight. Every summer, we would go out and
sit for hours waiting for something to bite. Last year my father made a poignant observation, he noted that in
recent years there seemed to be less fish. He's been doing this trip since he was my age and where he used to at
least get some pull, he now has to wait nearly twice as long for anything. I've since come to realize that our
ocean is running out of fish. We are overexploiting a natural resource and doing nothing to stop it. The current
large scale fishing operations are not sustainable ecologically or economically.
large fish are disappearing from the ocean at alarmingly high rates. There has been a 90% decline in the top
predator fish abundance in the world between 1955 and 2000. Most industrial fishing techniques are overly
aggressive to marine environments in that they attract an abundance of bycatch. The three primary techniques
are surface long–line Fishing where chains more than 100 kilometers long are floated in the ocean with
thousands of baited hooks, fish aggregating devices use long nets going down 300 meters that are left for days
and just collect fish indiscriminately, finally and perhaps the worst being bottom Trawling which involves a
long heavily weighed net dragged across seafloor. Fish aggregating devices are too indiscriminate in what kind
of marine life they capture. They are often deployed with the intention of catching skipjack

The New Zealand Sea Lion
I Introduction
The New Zealand sea lion (formerly known as the Hooker's sea lion) is the most threatened sea lion species in
the world.
A Scope
Bycatch is a significant issue affecting marine mammals in New Zealand. This paper will focus on the effect
that squid trawling has on the declining population of the New Zealand sea lion. This paper will address
whether current mechanisms that seek to protect the New Zealand sea lion are robust and will recommend
options for reform.
B Background
Historically, New Zealand sea lions occupied sites all around New Zealand. The New Zealand sea lion was
common throughout New Zealand until the late eighteenth century. Today, New Zealand sea lions exist mainly
on two main breeding sites: the Auckland Islands, and Campbell Island. In 2010, approximately 71% of sea lion
pups were born at the Auckland Islands and 29% of sea lion pups were born on Campbell Island. For sea lions,
estimates of pup production are the best measure of population status and size. In early 2014, 1,575 pups were
counted on the Auckland Islands.
The Auckland Island population appears to be sharply decreasing. The most recent figures indicate that since
1998 there has been decrease in pup production at the Auckland Islands of approximately 50%.
The Ministry for Primary Industries maintains that the direct effect of fishing–related mortality on the New
Zealand sea lion population is small. In spite of this, research suggests that a plausible hypothesis of the

My Best Friend
Once upon a time, I thought I was in a fairy tale. His name was Emmett. We met in preschool, and have been
best friends ever since. Emmett is a jock on the football team, with a very soft heart. We had lived as neighbors
together in the town of Billings, Montana, since I was born, and had been inseparable. Until a year ago, when
we were fifteen, he floated away. He met a girl named Raychel, a snotty, rich, shallow, cheer captain. They
were awful together because Emmett has always been a warm hearted person. At school, they would walk
down the halls with both of their little possies, and Emmett would not even look at me. Whenever he saw me,
he would wince, and look away. Today, I was on my way to Sculptural Art, when he saw me, and walked up to
me. He told me that he was going to a movie, and wanted me to come. I, of course, flustered, said yes. Tonight,
we would meet, at the Rockwell Movie theatre, to see Merge. While we watched the seemingly, never ending
horror movie, everything felt like normal. We laughed, and screamed together, just like old times. While we
were walking out of the theatre, Raychel walked by us with a mad, and upset face. I murmured, confused
because it was the first time I had been with him in over a year. I asked Emmett, and he said they had recently
broke up! I was overjoyed, but upset at the sametime. Emmett just kept walking like nothing was wrong.
Myself, being a short, tiny, nerd, had to practically run to keep up with his long, tall strides.

Difference Between Shrimp And Prawn
INTRODUCTION
Shrimp or prawn have various types and species in this aquatic ecosystem. Both of the terms, shrimp and prawn
are usually used by the people in this aquatic industry to described the multiple species that exist in this world
either from freshwater habitats or seawater habitats. Actually there are slightly different between the used of
this two terms. Shrimp are usually used for the shrimp that are from seawater habitat while the prawn term are
used to indicate the shrimp from the freshwater habitat. However this two terms are not really known by the
people that out from the aquaculture industry to be differentiate. Only the people that are familiar with this two

The Importance Of Happiness In My Life
In life, we tend to try to please people and make them as happy as possible even though we sacrifice the things
that truly make us happy. I, like many others in the world, have experienced many occasions where I have
sacrificed my own happiness just to make other people happy, or just to see them smile a genuine smile. No one
else can make you happy in your life. Intimate relationships and friendship will often offer temporary sanctuary
from things like your fears, insecurities, and past experiences that weren't particularly positive, but if we want
to get over these things we must face them all alone. I recall a few events from my childhood and teenage years
where I would give up what I wanted to do to make my close family members and my friends and
acquaintances happy. The first event, that I can remember clearly, was that my mother really wanted me to
grow up like my beautiful and smart bigger sister and be on the school's cheerleading team and the dance team,
even though she knew I did not particularly want to be on those said teams. She begged and begged me, and
eventually when I was about 7, I decided to join the cheerleading team because I didn't want to see my mother
sadder than she already was because I would not join earlier. After that she was the happiest that I had ever seen
and she would take me out to Ol' Charley's after every game. It seemed like every time we went there we would
order a cotton candy Shirley temple and shrimp scampi. She would always tell me how proud she is of me and
that when she sees me out there she just feels so happy to see me out there doing something she remembers so
well and how fun it is. In the end, I would always fake a smile just to make her happy. The second most
memorable experience I had was after my mom had passed away and I was legally adopted my grandparents.
They wanted me to go to the Benton Academy because it was a Christian oriented, which I didn't have a
problem with, expect I don't believe in any religion, but they wanted it and so I would tell them I loved going
there when in all actuality I did not like going there. Now coming from a public school where there had been
over 200 people in my grade, most of which I didn't know, to only having 32

  • 1. Planet Shrimp Recommendation Partnering with the ever–growing sustainable seafood movement within the food service industry is the most viable option for Planet Shrimp. The restaurant industry incorporates a variety of educational platforms, including trade shows, food festivals, restaurant trade publications, food sections in newspapers and chef blogs, TV shows and cookbooks. This strategy is the most experiential of the three alternatives, which ensures that the everyday consumer will have a higher chance of recall. It is durable in the sense that long–term growth can be sustained through an expanding network of stakeholders in the restaurant industry, from organizations such as Slow Food to well–known chefs. Moreover, this strategy also has the largest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Narrative About Fishing It was around 7 o'clock on a cool August night. Our family was getting ready to eat our dinner consisting of freshly caught blue crab, croaker, red snapper, and shrimp. We bought the shrimp from a small mom and pop bait shop on the main road of the island. In our small beach bungalow, the shrimp and crab boil smelled like heaven with a little bit of sea salt. We all sat on the back porch with the sea to our left and our obnoxious water balloon throwing neighbors to our right. The smell of our luxurious dinner grew greater when my "nonnie" walked out with a tray. On the tray sat a mountain of food. It caught everyone's attention, and we all ran to it attracted like flies on dung. To start off, I indulged on the largest blue crab on the tray. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I got the head and he got the body. I put the head on my hook so that the tentacles would move when they hit the water. Not two seconds after my bait hit the water I had a fish on. It ate the squid faster than you could say onomatopoeia. This time, I was ready. I jerked once again. I made sure to lodge the hook in its mouth and it took off. The fish was peeling 60 lbs test off my rod like dental floss. Instead of running up the pier this time it ran under the pier. Just as quick as it was on, it was off, and with a snap that sounded like the breaking of a toothpick my line broke. Again started thinking what more could I have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Brine Shrimp Eggs Research Paper Results Samples of Artemia eggs were exposed during three days to four different salinities: 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5 %. After gathering all the results, one may observe the level of salinity that contributed to the larger hatching success of Artemia. The sample exposed to a salinity of 0.5% exhibited the greatest hatching whereas the sample exposed to the solution with no salt, or 0% salinity, did not show any hatching nor partial hatching (Table 1). The sample exposed to a 1.5% salinity presented some free–swimming individuals and partial hatch eggs, but they were less than the ones exposed to 0.5% (Table 1). The sample containing 1% salinity was lost during the experiment and we were not able to record the data (Table 1).By looking at the recorded data of the overall class (Table 2), one may still perceive that the most effective solution for hatching was 0.5% Table 1: Results of Artemia Hatching Experiment; Number of Eggs by Category in One Trial Salinity Percentage 0% 0.50% 1% 1.50% Initial egg count 16 26 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was predicted that Artemia populations would not survive in waters containing high percentages of salinities since t would cause the cell to shrivel and probably die due to dehydration. For this reason, it was hypothesized that the eggs in the solution with the highest salt concentration would not be able to hatch. During the experiment, the data for the 1% salinity was lost when the petri dish with the solution and the specimen accidentally dropped. However, our hypothesis was not supported by the recorded data. The results show a major amount of hatched eggs at 0.5% salinity, while the 1.5% salinity presented a lower amount of hatching. However, hatching was not present in the solution with 0% salinity. Therefore, I reject my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Characteristics Of The Mantis Shrimp The Mantis Shrimps are marine crustaceans of the Stomatopoda. The specific species I choose to focus on is Lysiosquillina maculate, or Zebra Mantis Shrimp. The Zebra Mantis Shrimp is the largest Mantis Shrimp in the world, growing up to a length of 40cm. Most members of the Stomatopod order share mostly similar characteristics, so some of what I will write about is not specific to just Lysiosquillina maculate, but most of the members of the order.Anatomy and PhysiologyThere are over 450 different species of Mantis Shrimp. Although the Zebra Mantis Shrimp is the largest of all Mantis Shrimp species, the average length for Mantis Shrimps is around 10cm. Mantis Shrimps have a bony, thick shell that covers the back part of its head and the first for segments of its chest area, or thorax. The Zebra Mantis Shrimp possess sets of appendages that stem from its chest, called thoracic appendages. These appendages have evolved to be extremely powerful in close quarters combat. Mantis Shrimps are normally divided into two subcategories based on their hunting strategy. The first category is called the "Spearers", and the second is known as the "Smashers". The "Spearers" are armed with sharp appendages that are topped with barbed tips. The smashers possess both a well–developed club, and a less developed spear. The spear possess by the smashers is still sharp, and has some uses, however their main hunting tool is their club–like appendage. The club is used to smash their prey, and break ... • 6. Peacock Mantis Shrimp Research Paper Most people know that shrimp are a popular food, but they are so much more than that (Gazzalo S–Sn, 439). Shrimp have a unique diversity and anatomy that is not often appreciated. Shrimp are found in most places where there is water. They are able to live in both fresh and salt water (Gazzalo S–Sn, 439). Even though shrimp can survive in both types of water, when most people hear 'shrimp' they think 'ocean'. Shrimp are capable of many different behaviors as well. For instance, some shrimp are cannibalistic (National Geographic). Some shrimp hunt and kill other shrimp, even members of their own species. Shrimp are also capable of symbiotic relationships (Omar Badr Films). One such relationship is the goby fish and the pistol shrimp (Omar Badr ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What most people do not know is that the peacock mantis shrimp is not a shrimp at all, despite it being in the name. The peacock mantis shrimp is roughly two to seven inches long, territorial, and brightly colored (Mantis Shrimp). Its popularity could also be attributed to its colorful appearance. It is colored in mostly blue and green with red and orange accents (Mantis Shrimp). This "shrimp" also has some deadly weapons, much like the pistol shrimp. The peacock mantis shrimp has two club–like claws that fold under its body much like a praying mantis, hence the name (Mantis Shrimp). The two clubs are spring loaded and when it decides to use them they shoot forward at the speed of a twenty–two caliber bullet (Mantis Shrimp). They have been known to break through aquarium glass (Mantis Shrimp). The peacock mantis shrimp also boasts some amazing eyes. The peacock mantis shrimp can see a lot of color. It has sixteen color cones in each eye, while humans have three (Mantis Shrimp). The peacock mantis shrimp can see ten times more color than humans can (Mantis Shrimp). It can also see ultraviolet light (Mantis Shrimp). Its eyes also move independently from each other for maximum field of vision (Mantis Shrimp). • 9. North Carolina Fishing In 2015, commercial fisheries harvested in North Carolina caught more than four times the recreational coastal fish harvest, yet commercial fishermen ask for less stringency on commercial fishing ("Portal"). Within North Carolina waters the most effective way of catching fish can be noticed without looking very far. Over the past few decades, many more commercial fishermen have been popping up creating a lack of abundance in some channels and creeks that once were pristine. The methods used by many commercial fishermen can harm them by catch and nontarget species of the estuaries and nurseries. These poor animals are already endangered why does it have to be made worse by commercial fishermen. Manatees are aquatic mammals kind of like whales they are the gentle giants of the Intracoastal waterway. Manatees are like the whales of inshore but unlike whales manatees are more inept to being harmed by humans and the fishing. Sea turtles use both inshore and offshore waters so they are always in danger from the fisheries from being run over by a boat or being entrapped in a net. As consumers are continually concerned about knowing where their food comes from, the safety of their food and price point, Planet Shrimp should understand how to educate the public about the 'clean' shrimp movement (The Canadian Press, 2014a). • 11. Research Paper On Shrimp's Exoskeleton Shrimp's exoskeleton Inspires new armor design Our underwater friend, a model. When you think of fierce underwater creatures, the tiny shrimp may not come to mind among the water giants such as killer whales, the great white shark, manta rays, and others. But yet, when you are eating that scrumptious thing, don't you find that shell a bit troublesome? Well, whereas you may find that part annoying and just a hassle to deal with when cooking, other people, such as researchers may have taken a shine to it. It was nearly a month ago that news barely broached out from researchers (http://esciencenews.com/articles/2015/06/18/mantis.shrimp.inspires.new.body.armor.and.football.helmet.design) about possibly using the Mantis Shrimp (http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/worlds– deadliest/deadliest–mantis–shrimp)'s exoskeleton (key feature to all arthropods livelihood and survival) to design a new body armor. ... • 12. Brine Shrimp Essay The purpose or the significance of the experiment was to see if brine shrimp can survive in different salinities of saltwater. The experimental (alternative) hypothesis was supported, because in figure 1 it showed that there was an increase of the average (mean) of survival rate of the brine shrimp when the salinity level (in grams) increased. It was in Figure 1 and it shown that the rates had higher numbers (increased survival rates) and the lower salinities had lower survival rates. The raw data also had shown that higher numbers were in the higher salinities rather than in the lower salinities. The salt had an effect on the Brine Shrimp, is because the more the more salt they had (being a saltwater species) would lead to more surviving unlike a lower salinity which did not have enough salt to support the DV (the Brine Shrimp). In the literature review, we stated that others have also shown that the higher the salinity, the higher chances of the brine shrimp surviving in the saltwater. We were uncertain about the brine shrimp of not having high survival rates in lower salinities, due to the brine shrimp species mainly don't live in high salinity areas. ... When it comes to people, we all possess three color receptors within our eyes, allowing us to see visual light as we know it. However, there are many animals who have even more. The more receptors that an animal has, the more they can see. Topping the charts is the Mantis Shrimp, who have upwards of twenty color receptors, allowing them to see not only the visual light that humans see, but also into the invisible spectrums of ultraviolet and polarized light. Using polarized light, things that have once gone unseen by the human eye can be brought to light, including cancerous tissues, which reflect this special form of light differently ... • 15. The Global Catch Of Shrimp Species 1. Introduction Penaeid shrimps (Family Penaeidae: Rafinesque, 1815) are the most economically important crustaceans in the world as a primitive group of decapod (Abele, 1991; Chan, 1998; Dall et al., 1990). The family has a world– wide distribution in shallow, inshore tropical and subtropical waters. The highest diversity of the family members occurs in the Indo–West Pacific region with about 205 species grouped into 26 genera (Farfante and Kensley, 1997; Martin and Davis, 2001; McLaughlin et al., 2005; Nizinski, 2003). The global catch of shrimp species is about 3.4 million tons/year. More than half of which are caught from the Western and Northwest Central Pacific fisheries, besides the contribution of other essential fisheries in the Indian and in the Western Atlantic Oceans (FAO, 2014). Shrimps remain to be the largest single product in value terms accounting about 15 % of the internationally traded fisheries products in 2012. Moreover, shrimps are primarily produced in developing countries, and much of this production progressively expands in the international trade. As the economic conditions develop in these countries, growing demand leads to high domestic consumption leading to fewer exports. Such high demand and the subsequent overexploitation are negatively impacting the standing stocks of shrimp which fall below the healthy standard levels. This requires regular monitoring, assessment and management of each species to keep tracking of the effects of such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Growth Of Marine Diatom Abstract The growth of marine diatom, Chaetoceros muelleri, used as live feed in aquaculture, was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The variables initially screened for biomass production using Plackett– Burman experimental design were nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature, pH, salinity and agitation speed. The screening revealed that nitrate, phosphate, silicate, temperature and pH significantly influenced the biomass production of C. muelleri. These five variables were further optimized by central composite design (CCD) of RSM for biomass production and the medium was constituted accordingly to have nitrate 180 mg l–1, phosphate 7.5 mg l–1, silicate 30 mg l–1, and temperature of incubation 31oC and pH 6.46. President Marvyn Budd expresses that Planet Shrimp is built on the premise of 'clean shrimp'; in other words, naturally raised shrimp that is farmed without the use of antibiotics, pesticides, and hormones (Van Brenk, 2015). Planet Shrimp is currently capable of producing 400,000 pounds of shrimp annually, but they are aiming to produce up to 3–5 million pounds of shrimp annually ("Ontario Shrimp Farm", 2015). Moreover, Planet Shrimp will be able to sustain demand; since they are only producing a limited amount of shrimp right now, they should focus on ensuring that they can maintain a steady supply to build a strong foundation on which to further expand their network. Working with stores who are already known for their sustainable values ensures that the Planet Shrimp brand reputation is maintained. Those who understand the importance of Planet Shrimp's values will likely be the "early adopters" and champions of their product, marketing their shrimp through word–of–mouth and organic marketing. Although there is a market within large chain grocery stores for sustainably sourced seafood (such as Loblaws), these grocery stores do not have as much of a focused message of sustainability as smaller, independent stores. Research Paper On Freshwater Invertebrates While most people thinking of invertebrates for the aquarium are thinking of marine invertebrates, there are a surprising number of freshwater invertebrates that make excellent tank inhabitants. Many freshwater invertebrates do not require large amounts of space, making them ideal for Nano tanks or even goldfish bowls. Some eat algae or uneaten fish food, while others are stunningly beautiful. Sometimes such useful attributes even belong to the same creature. However, freshwater invertebrates don't always have the same requirements as fish and the requirements differ considerably between different species. Not only does the collection of the colorful live rocks beautifies one's tank but also provides shelters for the fish and filters the whole tank. However, everything has a good side and the bad one. The addition of live rocks to the tank may have some potential drawbacks, for not every organism living on those marine rocks is important, and even some of them are disadvantageous to the tank itself. One exemplary "unwanted organism" which lives on live rocks is the Mantis Shrimp, which maybe accidentally introduced to the tank through the addition of live rocks. Mantis shrimp, which is a varicolored creature living in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is an extraordinary pet, for not only does it colorful body impresses the people but also its powerful appendages, which are a nightmare to crabs, gastropods, and almost all other animals in the sea. Due to its interesting feature, many people at the present favor this species. In addition, some people even want to adopt the mantis shrimps as their pets; nevertheless, there are many hardships coming along with this desire. As a growing infant who can mess up with everything within his or her reach, the mantis shrimp can eat up its neighboring organisms and some marine plants in the tank. The mantis shrimp is well–known by many scientists for its powerful weapon–the raptorial appendages which is equipped for the sake of its survival. It is this feature of the shrimp that makes it a strong hunter in the nature. Due to this feature, especially the one owned by the Smasher species of the Mantis Shrimp, the shrimp has no trouble breaking preys with tough shells such as crabs and snails. In addition to the raptorial appendages, the mantis shrimp can swim insanely fast, thereby boiling water around it. While one may be surprised by these qualities, other organisms living around it. Our hypothesis, if applied to only the jars of 3 and 6 brine shrimp, would be highly supported, due to the significant difference in algae concentrations. Evidently, the more shrimp that were present in the ecosystem, the less algae that were available at the end. In an ecosystem with more consumers, the consumers demand a higher amount of nutrients from the environment, or more specifically, the producers. And as the consumers develop and grow, those demands also grow. And thus, when we increased the amount of brine shrimp, more algae were consumed per unit time. Other brine shrimp that could not effectively compete with the others died and left behind their exoskeletons. When we factored in the control jars, we revealed inconsistencies in the data, which led us to believe that there were unacknowledged errors in our experiment. The cavitation bubbles act like a second impact to whatever animal the mantis shrimp is targeting. If the first punches fail to immediately kill the prey, the cavitation bubbles would create the implosion that would finish the job. The same type of cavitation bubbles that the shrimp can create have been known to badly damage rotating boat propellers (Caldwell "Mechanics of Movement" 1).With its speed, force, and effect on the water around it, mantis shrimp have very little predators and can quickly annihilate whatever prey it sets its eyes ... • 26. Shrimp Synthesis Essay The main method in distinguishing between penaeids and carideans actually is by examining their reproductive methods. Penaeids release their eggs into the salty ocean away from the estuaries at an extremely early and undeveloped stage in the form of nauplius larvae, which is essentially just a swimming head the majority of the body still missing. The caridean, on the other hand, carries their eggs in the females' abdomen until they pass through the non–self–sustainable nauplius phase and can hatch at the more developed larval stage with some new segments and appendages. Either way, both of the species are barely visible to the eye and do not look anything like the adult shrimp that they will become. Through this phase in development they live and float independently in the plankton as they grow, molt, and develop through a long series of larval stages on their way to adulthood. As one can see, there is nothing simple about shrimp at all. Even an expert in crustaceans at the University of Washington, Greg Jensen, had this to say when asked to define the word shrimp. It is thought to have one of the most complex visual systems in the animal kingdom. Their eyes are similar to many insects in that they have 'compound eyes' each eye sits on a stalk and can move independently to the other, The trinocular vision experienced by the mantis shrimp allows it to see circularly polarized light as well as a host of colours not even fathomable to humans. Biomimicry is a form of engineering that describes the design of new products based on things observable in nature; just as the study of a bird may help us design aero planes; the study of the visual structure of the mantis shrimp has the potential to help advance radio and satellite imagery. To understand the applications of mantis shrimp vision; we must first understand how the eyes of the mantis shrimp work. The compound eye of the mantis shrimp is made up of many ommatidia; "an ommatidium is like a simple but complete photoreceptor organ consisting of optical components and receptor cells" Most research suggests that the vision experienced by the mantis shrimp is due to three distinct regions in its eye; there is an upper and lower hemisphere separated by the midband; these regions are made of distinct ommatidia; adapted and responsible for different functions in the eye of the mantis shrimp. Although we cannot personally see it, polarized light is everywhere and the ability to capture it could be useful in numerous ways. The first question is then, how does the mantis shrimp do it? Similar to many other crustaceans, the mantis shrimp has light receptors in the optical units of their compound eyes that are sensitive to linearly polarized light. Nevertheless, it is a particular row of 6 units around the middle of their eyes known as the "midband" that makes them so unique. Inside these 6 rows are 3 different types of "rhabdoms" that attach to their receptors and occupy 2 rows each. These "rhabdoms" are specifically shaped to convert circularly polarized light into the much easier to process linear variety [5]. Inspired by this, researchers have made artificial "waveplates" that are "[comprised of] two layers of tantalum pentoxide nanorods structurally similar to those in the eye of the mantis shrimp [6]" and can alter polarized light in similar ways. Research conducted shows that its sensor has the ability to detect cancerous legions before cells can become abundant enough to appear as visible tumors. He's been doing this trip since he was my age and where he used to at least get some pull, he now has to wait nearly twice as long for anything. I've since come to realize that our ocean is running out of fish. We are overexploiting a natural resource and doing nothing to stop it. The current large scale fishing operations are not sustainable ecologically or economically. large fish are disappearing from the ocean at alarmingly high rates. There has been a 90% decline in the top predator fish abundance in the world between 1955 and 2000. Most industrial fishing techniques are overly aggressive to marine environments in that they attract an abundance of bycatch. The three primary techniques are surface long–line Fishing where chains more than 100 kilometers long are floated in the ocean with thousands of baited hooks, fish aggregating devices use long nets going down 300 meters that are left for days and just collect fish indiscriminately, finally and perhaps the worst being bottom Trawling which involves a long heavily weighed net dragged across seafloor. Fish aggregating devices are too indiscriminate in what kind of marine life they capture. They are often deployed with the intention of catching skipjack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The New Zealand Sea Lion I Introduction The New Zealand sea lion (formerly known as the Hooker's sea lion) is the most threatened sea lion species in the world. A Scope Bycatch is a significant issue affecting marine mammals in New Zealand. This paper will focus on the effect that squid trawling has on the declining population of the New Zealand sea lion. This paper will address whether current mechanisms that seek to protect the New Zealand sea lion are robust and will recommend options for reform. B Background Historically, New Zealand sea lions occupied sites all around New Zealand. The New Zealand sea lion was common throughout New Zealand until the late eighteenth century. Today, New Zealand sea lions exist mainly on two main breeding sites: the Auckland Islands, and Campbell Island. In 2010, approximately 71% of sea lion pups were born at the Auckland Islands and 29% of sea lion pups were born on Campbell Island. For sea lions, estimates of pup production are the best measure of population status and size. In early 2014, 1,575 pups were counted on the Auckland Islands. The Auckland Island population appears to be sharply decreasing. The most recent figures indicate that since 1998 there has been decrease in pup production at the Auckland Islands of approximately 50%. The Ministry for Primary Industries maintains that the direct effect of fishing–related mortality on the New Zealand sea lion population is small. In spite of this, research suggests that a plausible hypothesis of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. My Best Friend Once upon a time, I thought I was in a fairy tale. His name was Emmett. We met in preschool, and have been best friends ever since. Emmett is a jock on the football team, with a very soft heart. We had lived as neighbors together in the town of Billings, Montana, since I was born, and had been inseparable. Until a year ago, when we were fifteen, he floated away. He met a girl named Raychel, a snotty, rich, shallow, cheer captain. They were awful together because Emmett has always been a warm hearted person. At school, they would walk down the halls with both of their little possies, and Emmett would not even look at me. Whenever he saw me, he would wince, and look away. Today, I was on my way to Sculptural Art, when he saw me, and walked up to me. He told me that he was going to a movie, and wanted me to come. I, of course, flustered, said yes. Tonight, we would meet, at the Rockwell Movie theatre, to see Merge. While we watched the seemingly, never ending horror movie, everything felt like normal. We laughed, and screamed together, just like old times. While we were walking out of the theatre, Raychel walked by us with a mad, and upset face. I murmured, confused because it was the first time I had been with him in over a year. I asked Emmett, and he said they had recently broke up! I was overjoyed, but upset at the sametime. Emmett just kept walking like nothing was wrong. Myself, being a short, tiny, nerd, had to practically run to keep up with his long, tall strides. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Importance Of Happiness In My Life In life, we tend to try to please people and make them as happy as possible even though we sacrifice the things that truly make us happy. I, like many others in the world, have experienced many occasions where I have sacrificed my own happiness just to make other people happy, or just to see them smile a genuine smile. No one else can make you happy in your life. Intimate relationships and friendship will often offer temporary sanctuary from things like your fears, insecurities, and past experiences that weren't particularly positive, but if we want to get over these things we must face them all alone. I recall a few events from my childhood and teenage years where I would give up what I wanted to do to make my close family members and my friends and acquaintances happy. The first event, that I can remember clearly, was that my mother really wanted me to grow up like my beautiful and smart bigger sister and be on the school's cheerleading team and the dance team, even though she knew I did not particularly want to be on those said teams. She begged and begged me, and eventually when I was about 7, I decided to join the cheerleading team because I didn't want to see my mother sadder than she already was because I would not join earlier. After that she was the happiest that I had ever seen and she would take me out to Ol' Charley's after every game. It seemed like every time we went there we would order a cotton candy Shirley temple and shrimp scampi. She would always tell me how proud she is of me and that when she sees me out there she just feels so happy to see me out there doing something she remembers so well and how fun it is. In the end, I would always fake a smile just to make her happy. The second most memorable experience I had was after my mom had passed away and I was legally adopted my grandparents. They wanted me to go to the Benton Academy because it was a Christian oriented, which I didn't have a problem with, expect I don't believe in any religion, but they wanted it and so I would tell them I loved going there when in all actuality I did not like going there. Now coming from a public school where there had been over 200 people in my grade, most of which I didn't know, to only having 32 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
