Metode kriptografi klasik seperti monoalfabetik menggunakan string kunci untuk menggantikan huruf-huruf plaintext. Pada metode monoalfabetik, huruf-huruf kunci hanya boleh muncul sekali dan menjadi huruf awal dari alfabet cipher. Contohnya, kunci "welcome" akan menghasilkan mapping alfabet cipher "WELCOMABDFGHIJKNPQRSTUVXYZ".
