Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
Xomed service
1. Servicing the Xomed Magnum II Straightshot Dr Ramandeep Singh Virk Asst Prof Dept of ENT PGIMER Chandigarh, India
2. The generations of XomedHandpieces....MAgnum, MAgnumII and Magnum 4 or M4 as its known...notice the size of the barrel...the Magnum had a smaller motor and was hence thinner....the middle one is MagnumII with a bigger motor and thicker
3. notice where the suction tube attaches is a bent pipe...this is one of the reasons that this port gets clogged with blood and debris and is difficult to clean because of the angulation....WD40 with a curved brush is very helpf
4. notice the 2 screws...they are Allen screws and need an Allen Key to open.....
5. I use a 2.5mm metric Allen key...if you have a screwdriver with allen bit its soooo easy.....allens come in metric and US sizes...good to have both cos sometimes if the head of the screw strips then we can use the US size one....slight size difference but fits perfectly
9. I have already serviced this handpiece but opened it again for the forum to post pics...you will notice loads of clots and debris and rust here......look carefully and you can see the areas where cleaning has been done...some brown red residue still remains
10. This is the other side...notice the bearing above the gear...this is the suction outlet...if this bearing fails your debrider is leaking blood and water into the gears.....
11. My bearing has started to rust around the edges......the top one.....(lower is the gear)
18. Now this is the tricky part for a bearing change....DO ONLY IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT ENOUGH....Please dont blame me for lost small parts etc later :-) Unscrew the rear end which is connected to the main barrel
23. after removing the pin the motor separates but still connected with wires
24. XOmed is SMART....wires are covered with epoxy putty so we cannot see the coding and which wire goes where......SMART....very smart
25. To reach the bearings there are small rivets which they seal the motor can with.....you need to drill them out......if you have a friend or patient who owns a tooling shop it help.....luckily I do....inside you will find the bearings.....if they are burnt order new ones and change em.........and ur good to go......
