2. Substituting Method
Q. 4x – y – 1 = 0 and 2x = 17 – y
Solution:
To find the value of x and y, we use the substitution method. First, we solve the equation
first for y and substitute the value of y to another equation and compute x value. we have
4x – y – 1 = 0
Which gives,
y = 4x – 1
By equation 2, we find the value of y, i.e.
2x = 17 – y
2x = 17 – (4x – 1)
2x = 17 – 4x + 1
Which equals
6x = 18
x= 3
Now, put the value of x in any one of equation and solve the equation for y, i.e
4 (3) – y – 1 = 0
12 – y – 1 = 0
y = 11
Answer is : x = 3, y = 11
