Cloud seeding is a form of weather modification, man-made
alteration to the climate system. Cloud seeding alters the moisture available in a
cloud in an attempt to create additional rainfall. We do this by dispersing Silver
Iodide or Sodium Salts into the cloud, affecting the physical processes
occurring inside. These substances are delivered into the clouds by ground-
based rockets or wing-mounted flares on board Aircraft.

How Cloud Seeding works?
•In cold cloud seeding.,
- The introduction of an ice-forming nucleating agent, (e.g., silver
iodide) causes super cooled liquid water droplets to freeze.
Once these droplets freeze, the initial ice embryos grow at the
expense of the water droplets around them.
– The first freezing process is often referred to as a static seeding
effect, increasing the efficiency of the precipitation process
within the seeded cloud volume.
– The second freezing process, resulting from release of
additional heat into the cloud, is often called the dynamic effect,
whereby the treated clouds are invigorated, thus processing
more moisture.

What is it used for and where?
•China has the largest program. It is also used in North America, Europe, Asia, and
Africa. Cloud seeding is used primarily for drought remediation. In areas where
ground water is the primary source of fresh water cloud seeding can be used to
replenish it. This is particularly important in the American southwest and Mexico.
It can be used to increase snow packs in areas where melting snow water is an
important source of freshwater. Ski resorts can also benefit from cloud seeding
services. A third use is Hail suppression; seeding spreads the water vapor across an
increased amount of smaller hailstones, increasing the chances that they melt before
they hit the ground. Austria is a leading country in using cloud seeding in this way,
protecting crops from destructive hailstones.
•It can also be used to get rid of Rain pollutants out of the sky. Russian pilots used
cloud seeding to remove radioactive particles from the air after the Chernobyl disaster
in order to protect Moscow.
