• According to the facts of the World meteorological organization the
average annual losses from hail are more than 2 billion $ only in
North America and Europe.
• More than 30 countries fight with this natural calamity by different
means. Nowadays the most effective is the Russian technology of
Anti-hail protection.
• The technology of Anti-hail protection of plants is based on the
radar tracking detection and the identification of different kinds of
clouds: hail, dangerously hail and potentially dangerous; and also
based on the addition of crystal agents consisting of iodine silver
with the help of special rockets.
• The Anti-hail rockets are the safest among the rockets of the similar
kind. Only ecologically pure components are used in their
production.
• The usage of the rockets let to reduce the hail losses at about 7
times.
• Realization expenses of the Anti-hail protection are justified from 3
till 11 times depending on the value of the agricultural crops.
Rockets for Farmers: What is cloud seeding?
Cloud seeding is a form of weather modification, man-made
alteration to the climate system. Cloud seeding alters the moisture available in a
cloud in an attempt to create additional rainfall. We do this by dispersing Silver
Iodide or Sodium Salts into the cloud, affecting the physical processes
occurring inside. These substances are delivered into the clouds by ground-
based rockets or wing-mounted flares on board Aircraft.

 Introduce large drops into cloud
 Large drops collide with small cloud droplets and grow
into rain drops (Coalescence)
 Rain drops heavy and large enough to fall out of cloud and
reach ground.

How Cloud Seeding works?
•In cold cloud seeding.,
- The introduction of an ice-forming nucleating agent, (e.g., silver
iodide) causes super cooled liquid water droplets to freeze.
Once these droplets freeze, the initial ice embryos grow at the
expense of the water droplets around them.
– The first freezing process is often referred to as a static seeding
effect, increasing the efficiency of the precipitation process
within the seeded cloud volume.
– The second freezing process, resulting from release of
additional heat into the cloud, is often called the dynamic effect,
whereby the treated clouds are invigorated, thus processing
more moisture.

Why cloud seeding?
•Though India get high amount of rainfall compared to many other countries, the large
infrastructure and water intensive agricultural practice makes India vulnerable to even
the minor swings (< 5%) in rainfall.
•India is at its absolute water limits (Bryson., 1989)
•Augmenting the annual rainfall in the drought prone region will realize the
development of the region for providing adequate water for drinking and irrigation
purposes. Increase the annual rainfall by tapping the sky water from the clouds
whenever they appear in the sky.
•Cloud seeding increases 20% more rainfall capacity of regular rain cloud
•as per Bombay Municipal corporation project records of artificial rainfall near Modak
Sagar and Tansa Lakes suggests Cloud seeding have increased 200% in rain fall.

What is it used for and where?
•China has the largest program. It is also used in North America, Europe, Asia, and
Africa. Cloud seeding is used primarily for drought remediation. In areas where
ground water is the primary source of fresh water cloud seeding can be used to
replenish it. This is particularly important in the American southwest and Mexico.
It can be used to increase snow packs in areas where melting snow water is an
important source of freshwater. Ski resorts can also benefit from cloud seeding
services. A third use is Hail suppression; seeding spreads the water vapor across an
increased amount of smaller hailstones, increasing the chances that they melt before
they hit the ground. Austria is a leading country in using cloud seeding in this way,
protecting crops from destructive hailstones.
•It can also be used to get rid of Rain pollutants out of the sky. Russian pilots used
cloud seeding to remove radioactive particles from the air after the Chernobyl disaster
in order to protect Moscow.

Once these droplets freeze, the initial ice embryos grow at the expense of the water droplets around them. – The first freezing process is often referred to as a static seeding effect, increasing the efficiency of the precipitation process within the seeded cloud volume. – The second freezing process, resulting from release of additional heat into the cloud, is often called the dynamic effect, whereby the treated clouds are invigorated, thus processing more moisture.
