The origin of the name is "street" on a bridge across the River Mersey. The principal road
through X, the A56 Chester Road, follows the line of the old Roman road from Deva
Victrix(Chester) to Mancunium, crossing the Mersey into X at Crossford Bridge, built at the
location of the ancient bridge. The earliest evidence of human occupation around X comes from
Neolithic stone axes found in the area, dating from about 2000 BC. X was part of the land
occupied by the Celtic Brigantes tribe before and during the Roman occupation, and lay on their
border with the Cornovii on the southern side of the Mersey. By 1212, there were two manors in
the area now called X. The land in the south, close to the River Mersey, was held by Hamon de
Mascy, while the land in the north, closer to the River Irwell, was held by Henry de Y. In about
1250, a later Hamon de Mascy gave the X manor to his daughter, Margery. She in turn, in about
1260, granted X to Richard de Y at a rent of one penny. The de Mascy family shortly afterwards
released all rights to their lands in X to Henry de Y, the Y family thus acquiring the whole of X,
since when the two manors descended together

In September 1997 Texas, USA company WTec was granted U.S. Patent No. 5,663,484 on “X lines
and grains." The patent secures lines of Y and ways of analyzing that grain. WTec, owned
by Prince Hans-Adam of Liechtenstein, faced international outrage over allegations of biopiracy.
It had also caused a brief diplomatic crisis between India and United States with India
threatening to take the matter to WTO as a violation of TRIPS which could have resulted in a
major embarrassment for the United States. Both voluntarily and due to review decisions by
the United States Patent and Trademark Office, WTec lost or withdrew most of the claims of the
patent, including, most importantly, the right to call their rice lines “Y." A more limited varietal
patent was granted to WTec in 2001 on claims dealing with three strains of the grain developed
by the company.
