This document outlines steps for a group project to design an ideal city or island to live in. Students will work together to map out their chosen place, describing key features and characteristics. TASK
Working in a small group you are going to create the most fantastic
place for you to live!
Your place can be a city or an island, whichever you prefer.
PROCESS
You have to present the design of a large map of your place (it can
be a city or an island). Also, you have to create an itinerary based on
your ideal place as a visiting tour, in order to show it to the rest of the
groups in class.
If you decide to create a city, you will have to draw some wide
avenues, long and short streets with buildings, such as houses,
hospitals, schools, supermarkets, chemists, shops, cinemas, theatres,
banks, museums, churches, sport centres, parks and gardens, leisure
centres, and all type of buildings and things that you are able to design.
If you decide to create an island, you will have to draw geographical
features, such as mountains, waterfalls, lakes, valleys, forests,
meadows, rivers, paths and all type of characteristics that you are able
to design.
You have to design a brochure as if it was a tourist guide to encourage
people to visit your ideal place. Each member of the group will make
an oral presentation of the different characteristics of this place.

STEP 1
• Talk and decide about your ideal place to live in. Will it be a city
or an island?
• Decide the items and characteristics of your place:
o How many of them (between 15‐20)?
o What will they be like?
o Invent or change two of the usual characteristics that will
be in your city or island. These two items must be different
and uncommon from what we know
• On a white page write a list of the names and numbers of the
different buildings, avenues, streets, gardens, parks, transport,
and so on for your city. If you choose an island, write a list of the
geographical characteristics like mountains, rivers, lakes, valleys,
meadows…
• Remember that in both cases you have to invent or change two of
the typical characteristics.
• Write a short description of the two special items that you
will explain in your oral presentation at the final step
• Each person in the group draws the first map­draft of the place.
Compare your maps and draw a final one.

STEP 2
• Give the short writing you made on STEP 1 to your teacher.
• Put four cardboards together and stick them to draw the map of
your place.
Tip: use the pencil in a very smooth way.
• What’s the history of your place? Write about a short text about
the history of your place.
• Talk about the way of life in your place.
If your place is a city, talk about the clothes, transportation,
shopping, jobs, buildings, leisure activities, and whatever you want to
add.
If your place is an island, talk about the geographical features of
the island, clothes, shelter, food, activities, and other things you want
to add.
Remember that in both cases you have to include the two special
characteristics.
Write notes about your ideas. Keep them because you will use them in
your oral presentation.

STEP 3
Give your notes from STEP 2 to your teacher.
• Talk and decide about the itinerary to follow on your map in
order to show your city or your island to a visitor. Why is this
place special, fantastic or different?
• Write about the itinerary that you have to present in your oral
presentation. Following the itinerary you have to describe the
characteristics and important things of your ideal place. You
have to tell about your two special items as well.

STEP 4
Give your notes from STEP 3 to your teacher.
• Talk about the design, form and content of your brochure. You
have to prepare it for somebody who has never been in your
place and wants to have a quick look at the main attractions.
• Write some notes about the brochure and keep them. You must
follow the itinerary to visit your place. So you must talk about:
o Places
o Food
o Transportation
o Leisure Activities
The brochure must look like this one:
Front Cover: Picture of the city
Last Page: Name of the members
of the group
• Draw the itinerary to follow on your map in order to show it to
your classmates.

STEP 5
Give your notes from STEP 4 to your teacher.
• Every member in the group does the first draft of the brochure.
• Share your ideas and decide the final design together. Do the
brochure.
• Prepare and write the content of your oral presentation about
your special place. You will decide what and how you are going
to explain it, but every member of the group has to know what
their part is.
Give the writing to your teacher.
