1. How to create an account on YouTube
- Go to http://www.youtube.com
- At the top right corner of the page click “Create Account”
o YouTube may tell you it needs to log you out of any Google accounts you are signed in to. If this is
the case click “Sign Me Up”
- On the “Get started with your account” page enter:
o Username you wish to have (alphanumerical). Click “Check Availability” below the username box.
If your username is already assigned to another user you will be given available alternatives.
Select one or enter a different username and repeat the process.
o Location
o Postcode
o Date of Birth
o Gender
- Check the first tickbox if you wish anyone who has your email address to locate your content easily
through the YouTube search box
- Select the second tickbox if you wish to receive marketing emails from YouTube
- Read through the Terms of Service and Terms of Use and click “I accept” if you’re happy.
- Click “Join Now”
The next screen asks if you already have a Google Account.
o If you do:
enter your email and password on the left form of the screen
You are now registered and logged in to your new YouTube account. You can now also
access your YouTube account via your Google Account page.
o If you don’t:
Enter your email address on the right form on the screen
Select a password (minimum 8 characters)
Check/uncheck “Enable Web History” depending on your preference. Web History offers
you more relevant search results and recommendations based on your web activity,
providing you with a more personalized experience on Google.
Enter the word verification
Click “Create New Account and Finish”
You are now registered and logged in to your new YouTube account
The bare bones of your account is now created, but there is still a lot more to add.
To fill out your profile:
- In the top right of the screen, click on your username and you will see 6 options.
- Select “Account”
- Select “Profile Setup” from the left hand menu.
o Add a Photo
Click “Change Picture” on the top navigation
Click “Upload an image”
Click “Browse”
Navigate to the image you want to upload (max file size 256k) – note your image will be
resized to 88px by 88px.

2. • Once you have uploaded videos you can use a video still from one of your
uploaded videos instead.
Click “Open”
Click “Save Changes”
- Complete the “Describe Yourself” field
- Enter your website’s URL (if applicable)
- Select each of the additional profile options below the “Website (URL)” box and complete:
o Personal Details
o Home town/Location
o Jobs/Career
o Education
o Interests
- Select “Save Changes”
You are now ready to start adding videos and gaining subscribers.
How to upload a video
- In the top right of the screen, click on your username and you will see 6 options.
- Select “My Videos”
- Click on the “New” button on the left side of the screen underneath “My Account”
- From the dropdown select “Video Upload”
- Click the yellow “Upload video” button
- Click “Browse”
- Navigate to the image you want to upload (up to 2GB and 10 minutes in length)
- Click “Open”
- You will now see the file being uploaded
- Once uploaded complete the below information thinking about the keywords you should use:
o Title
o Description
o Tags (any important keywords)
o Category
o Select your preferred privacy setting
o Select “Save changes”
You are given the unique URL for this video below the Save changes button. This can also
be found by clicking on the video on your “My Videos” page and copying the URL from the
address bar of your browser.
How to gain subscribers
In order to start building your subscriber list you need to upload good content. As your content gets viewed,
people will begin to subscriber to you. You can also comment on other relevant posts in order to increase your
visbility with the hope of also increasing subscribers.
Letting your subscribers know of new content
Once you have built up your subscribers you can update them on new content or content that you think will be of
interest to them.

3. - In the top right of the screen, click on your username and you will see 6 options.
- Select “My Channel”
- Select the “Post Bulletin” tab
- Enter the message you wish to send out in the message field
- Enter the YouTube video URL
- You will see a preview of your message on the right of the message field
- Once you’re happy, click “Post Bulletin”
Your bulletin will appear on yours and your subscribers’ recent activity modules
Additional Tools
When you click on your username in the top right of the screen, there are 3 additional options:
- Inbox
o Your YouTube message inbox . You can use this to email other YouTube users using their
YouTube name. The email appears in the users YouTube inbox and the inbox of the email address
they signed up with.
- Subscriptions
o Lists your subscribed channels for easy access. You can subscribe to a channel by clicking on the
‘Subscribe’ button just above any video you have found interesting. This will subscribe you to that
channel and give you easy access to all videos posted by that user.
o The left hand side of the Subscriptions section allows you to filter videos by user.
- Favourites
o All your favourite YouTube videos are listed here. You can add videos to your favourites by clicking
the ‘Save to’ button underneath any videos you come across that you would like to revisit and
selecting Favourites.
