3. Star Trek Into Darkness is not only a good film but has a very good introduction and
opening. The purpose of an opening is to grip the viewers and make them
interested enough to watch the rest of the film. Star Trek Into Darkness’ opening
does just that, however it does not entirely relate to the rest of the film. Although it
present Captain Kirk breaking prime directive which you would think would create a
disequilibrium. But now this is only the start of the film.
The equilibrium starts by immediately brings you into the action, the character
running away from a tribe, whom we later find to Captain Kirk is attempting to get
the inhabitants away from an erupting volcano. He does this be stealing a scroll
they “were bowing to.” Bones, the chief medical officer, now joins him and they run
to a cliff. This leads to the true opening in which the enterprise must rescue Spock
from inside a volcano. This is a thrilling opening, and of course Spock escapes.
4. What I like about the opening
I like the opening because it is in itself a shorter story, a mini film if you will with its own small
equilibrium and disequilibrium. Leading on to the major part of the film. I also like it because it
is fun, thrilling and defiantly made me want to watch the rest of the film.
How it feeds the rest of the film
The opening of Star Trek Into Darkness feeds the rest of the film by being an opening. It
introduces the characters. And leads straight into the rest of the film, by giving us a
disequilibrium. Kirk has broken the prime directive, what will happen. This is also a question that
keeps the audience watching.
Some textual analysis
The special effects was used basically all the time in the opening because this is a science fiction
film. In fact aside from the set inside the Enterprise or the shuttlecraft the rest is special effects.
My favourite effects are when the enterprise rises over the ocean and when the shuttlecrafts
left warp nacelle explodes. And Spock is sent hurtling down into the volcano. The camera effects
include a zoom from long shot effect in which the camera zooms into a character running away
from a tall building, only this is far away. Shots also include close ups to characters when they
are introduced or a wide angle shot of tie en eternise as it rises from the ocean.
5. How to introduces characters
All the main characters are introduced through the ten minute opening., all except Khan whoa is
introduced later on as the definitive enemy. The crew of the enterprise is introduced as the crew
of the enterprise on the bridge, aside from Sulu Uhura and Spock who are in a shuttlecraft in an
attempt to activate a cold fusion device in the volcano and save the planet.
How it has introduced plot
The plot ions not entirely introduced in the opening, it is rather a side story to the plot
introducing the main characters. And it is involved later in the film when their past experience
(in the film) give them difficult decision. It is linked because it results in Kirk losing his ship the
Enterprise and introduces the other main enemy the admiral of Starfleet.
how it has hooked the audience
The opening has hooked the audience by making this a thrilling and awesome start to the film. It
is action packed, quickly introduces the characters, and with loads going on it keeps the
audience at the edge of their seat.
