Only one of the four engine cycles produce power, with the other
three consuming power. Back pressure results in losses of 10 - 30%
of engine efficiency and increased toxic emissions.
There are additional factors which add to back pressure build-up in an
exhaust system including; catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters
and silencers. These additional exhaust systems can reduce emissions
and pulse waves but restrict the gas flow and cause backward pressure
waves which all have a negative effect on engine efficiency.
What is exhaust back pressure?
Exhaust back pressure is a result of the engine’s inability to force toxic gases out of the combustion cylinder and
away from the engine efficiently. Pulse waves, pressure waves and extremely hot gas, clashing with dense cool air,
result in volatile conditions and temperatures of 800°C to 1100°C, causing a serious loss of engine efficiency.
In the combustion chamber gas leak-back and back pressure causes:

n Serious loss in fresh charge (air / fuel mixture)

Limitations to engine efficiency
Our patented technology centres on improving Volumetric Efficiency (VE), which is the ability to move charge
(air) into, and exhaust gas out of, the cylinders. VEis the key to greater engine efficiency, i.e. a more complete
combustion resulting in more power, lower emissions and improved MPG.
Closed loop self-educating ECUs adjust their parameters to ensure that a more complete combustion is taken
advantage of. Consequently, tuners can take full advantage of air first and then fuel to achieve ultimate combustion.
Furthermore, turbo-chargers operating in low back pressure environments lose their lag and rev to a higher velocity,
significantly improving performance.

Vortex’s patented technology uses wasted energy, in the form of exhaust pressure, to accelerate gas over a profiled
shape, creating a vortex. Acceleration of the gas flow creates low pressure in front of the vortex, resulting in a vacuum
effect. This low pressure allows the engine to evacuate exhaust gases efficiently in front of the vortex and acceleration
of gasbehind.
The effect of scavenging the exhaust gases in front of the vortex allows the engine to breathe freely with little
or no gas leakage back in to the combustion chamber, allowing cleaner air into the cylinder for more complete
combustion. The spiralling acceleration of gas out of the system ensures no further build-up of back pressure
occurs, resulting in:

Importance of Vortex Technology to Reduce Toxic Emissions
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently issued a health warning
about toxic emissions from internal combustion engines. In June 2013
the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified diesel
engine exhaust as carcinogenic (cancer producing) in humans. Besides
the cancer risk, diesel exhaust fumes expose the public and workers,
particularly those in the transport industry, to disease in the throat, eye
andnose, lung inflammation, coughs, headaches, and nausea.
Furthermore these can irritate people with conditions such as asthma,

Building on the success of the Vortex Raceflo, we are proud to announce the
introduction of a smaller version specifically for motorcycles – the Vortex™
motoflo™.
A Vortex motoflo exhaust is better than a free-flowing stainless steel exhaust. It
gives serious gains that free-flowing stainless steel or titanium exhausts can’t
give. Whereas a Vortex exhaust will typically give 10% improvement in power
and torque, free-flowing exhaust systems generally only deliver one or two per
cent improvement, sometimes compromising on both power or torque.

CATALYSTS
Components of a Catalyst
A honeycomb monolith coated with
precious metals (usually Platinum,
Palladium and Rhodium) is encased in
a steel can. Between the monolith and
the can is matting which expands once
subjected to heat. Upon expansion,
the matting holds the monolith in place.
A Catalytic Converter (or Cat) is an Exhaust Emissions Device that uses a
combination of heat and precious metals to promote a chemical reaction,
which breaks down harmful gases, making the emissions less detrimental
tothe environment.
The operating temperature of a cat is between 350 to 400º C. Once the
cat has reached this temperature a chemical reaction occurs as the
exhaust gases flow through thecoated monolith. The harmful gases are
oxidised and converted as shown in the diagram opposite.

Using cutting edge cleaning technology, Vortex has the complete solution to DPF
regeneration.
Replacement Diesel particulate filters are made from cordierite substrate filter which is
not up to the standard of the OEM silicon carbide equipment. Our overnight filter
cleaning service returns the condition of a blocked or partially blocked DPF to an almost
new condition.
Vortex has developed a range of diesel particulate filter featuring our patented Vortex
technology.
Our filters are designed to spread the flow of the exhaust gas across the full face of the
silicon carbide filter substrate, resultingin increased particulate filtration compared with
standard DPFs.
The patented Vortex technology vastly improves the regeneration properties of the filter,
