Tatyana Navka was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine in 1975. Her parents encouraged her interest in sports and enrolled her in figure skating lessons at age five. She had some previous experience with roller skating. Navka began competing internationally in 1993 as part of the Soviet Union national team, paired with Samvel Gezalânom and later Roman Kostomarov. Over her career, Navka won two silver medals and a bronze medal at Russian Championships, as well as a bronze at the 2003 European Championships. She was named champion of Russia at the European and World Championships three times.
