Taras Khtey was born in Lvov region and followed in his father's footsteps to become a volleyball player. He made his debut for the Russian national team in 2002 in a World League tournament match against Cuba. Taras Khtey went on to win bronze at the 2004 Olympics, gold at the 2005 Euroleague, and silver at the 2005 European Championship. He has been the captain of the Russian national team since 2011 and is the only Russian player to win the World League twice, including as part of the winning team in 2011.
