PATH 1: CAMPILLO LAGOON
SPECIFICATIONS ABOUT THE PATH:
TIME REQUIRED ON FOOT: about 1 hour round trip (4 km there and back). Its a
circle route. Access is possible by bicycle and even on foot from the road. It is easily
accessible on foot from the track where you leave the vehicles.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:Easy.
LOCATION: In the municipality of Rivas. This path leaves the village along a road
from the subway station to the Environmental Education Centre.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION: There is a sign describing a route. White Storkes and Cattle
Egrets can be seen along the route. White Storkes often build their nest on rooftops,
the size of the nests rendering them visible at great range. The birds are typically seen
standing erect at their rooftop nests.
Also, we can see Cattle Egrets,towards evening, large flocks fly in distinctive, shapeless
flurries of white, gathering to roost in trees (something close to buildings) often in
thousands.
ENVIRONMENT DESCRIPTION:There are several rocky formations on the left hand
and the Jarama River on the right side. In the middle,the laggon that is a typical well-
conserved ecosystem because near the area there is a wastewater treatment plant and
now the water of the Jarama river and the lagoon is cleaned.
There are a typical water-bank vegetation (brambles, rushes, ashes, bulrushes and
reeds). Also visible are holm oaks, white poplars, tamarisks , wild rose.
You can find hundred-year-old olive trees in the countryside.
Note the presence of fox,boar,rabbit, hare prints and one invasive species, raccoon
Aromatics plants like lavander, rosemary, rockrose and thyme.
TIPS: Take some sweet and water with you. Do not forget your binoculars if you have
one.
