Abbey

*Originally it is an abbey church, but since 1559 it is a Royal
Peculiars. It is in City of Westminster, London (on the west of
the Palace of Westminster).
The Abbey was originally built by Edward the
Confessor but finished by William the
Conqueror.
It was the first church in England built in the
Romanesque style.
Later, it was rebuilt in
the Anglo-French
Gothic style between
1245 and 1517.
A chapel dedicated to the
Virgin Mary was added
to the abbey with the
donation of Henry VII of
England.
In 1550 it became a cathedral.
Since the first coronation of William The
Conqueror, in 1066, all English and British
sovereigns have been crowned in the Abbey
(with the exception of Jane I, Edward V and
Edward VIII).
King Edward's chair is housed within
the abbey and has been used at
every coronation. In 1950 it was
temporarily stolen by Scottish
nationalists. The chair also
housed the Stone of Scone upon
which the kings of Scots were
crowned. Now the Stone is in the
Edinburgh Castle, but at future
coronations it probably will be
returned to St Edward's Chair for
use during the coronation
ceremony.
There are buried kings, aristocrats, and other
important people like writers, musicians,
scientists, soldiers, artists.
Poets' Corner is a section of the south transept
of Westminster Abbey where famous writers
and artists are buried.
